Revision: So I originally gave them 1 star, but afterwards the owner, Harley, called me up and straightened everything out with the deposit. He was super helpful and very sincere. I just wish his employees have the same work ethic he does. Original Review: At first I thought our deposit experience was completely normal, but now I'm realizing it's a bait-and-switch that has been going on for a while here at Nooklyn. We put down a deposit on an apartment and 3 days later I got the call the we didn't get the apartment. Supposedly it's no longer on the market. I didn't bother asking for my deposit back assuming they would still find me an apartment. She knew our budget but it felt like she was showing more expensive and out of our range places on purpose. And then pressuring us into saying yes when we couldn't afford it. I finally asked about 2 other units I found on their website and she said she'd let me know. No response. I ended up asking another agent about a listing but she said to go back to my previous agent. Finally we found a place through a completely different company so I needed my deposit back and I was told they need to put in a request and then write out a check. This seems a bit ridiculous considering I was required to pay electronically - I don't see why they can't just send it right back. Also, she didn't even provide a timeframe for when to expect the money back. In addition to all of this, my current landlord is renting out my apartment through Nooklyn and the two idiots working there can't seem to understand scheduling as well as are guilt-tripping me and my roommates because we are working professionals and don't feel comfortable leaving them a key to show off our apartment (with pets) without one of us present. It's just a slimy feeling overall. read more

Before you read the rest of this review, understand two things... 1) If you are looking to rent within the intense New York City market, you absolutely must work with Talya at Nooklyn. She is a fantastic broker and an amazing person. In fact, there are not enough words to describe what a pleasure it was working with her. From the moment we met in Bushwick on our first showing, my partner and I knew our nightmare of finding a place in NYC was coming to an end. 2) We should have worked with a large company like Nooklyn from the start. It would have saved us a lot of time, energy, and money. Their application fees are transferrable so you pay them ONCE and they run your credit only once. If you get denied for an apartment, they "flip" your application to another that you like using the same information. You can't beat that. So, especially if you are moving from another city or state, use Nooklyn. Trust me, I'm just trying to spare you from the hell we went through. We recently re-located from Chicago to New York and what a journey it has been. I am so fortunate to be writing this review in our beautiful new apartment (gosh, what a relief). Before getting into this whole cross country move, we fully understood that it was going to be a difficult process. However, what we went through was so insane even our New York friends couldn't believe it. Basically, we dealt with the shadiest companies, nearly got scammed out of twelve hundred bucks, worked with the worst of the worst brokers, lost five hundred dollars in application fees, and spent three and a half weeks waiting to hear back from one single management company with another broker (only to continuously get the run-around). Try to imagine, you're moving nearly 800 miles away in a month so you start your search early... traveling back and forth from Chicago to New York on a strict budget, doing everything right; because you can't stay indefinitely, your livelihood is in someone else's hands. You want that person to be skilled enough to take care of you, right? Unfortunately for us we just hadn't met the right people and in New York you can barely trust anyone. After being scammed, abused, berated, and lead on by money hungry brokers and rental agencies, we were at our lowest point, completely and utterly disappointed...going broke and scared about our housing situation. We had twelve days before October 1st and panic was setting in. After a quick Google search we contacted Nooklyn. That was the best decision we had made up to that point. The sweet receptionist at Nooklyn put us in touch with Talya and from our initial phone call I was ecstatic to be working with a broker who right away seemed to care about our situation. We met in person a few days later, and like I said, we just knew something about her was different than all the other people we had dealt with. We told her our story and she assured us she would help us find a place to live. Our situation wasn't exactly ideal, but Talya went to the moon and back for us. Anyway, we applied for a few apartments with Talya as our initial one was denied. Of course we were disappointed, but Talya kept re-assuring us we would be okay in her hands. She somehow kept coming up with new apartments for us to see...We went on a bunch of showings with her and she never had a problem meeting with us last minute to go show us another place. She was consistently on the ball; always answering texts and phone calls, and communicating to us with updates. She genuinely cared about finding us a home and we will forever be grateful for that. It really is no wonder that Nooklyn is taking over the rental market in Brooklyn. They seem to just get it. Not to mention, Talya takes real estate seriously; she is a consummate professional who will do what it takes to find you a place to live. She went above and beyond for us and I can't thank her enough. Meeting her put an end to our nightmare of finding an apartment in Brooklyn. Because of Nooklyn and Talya, our two dogs and us have a cute apartment in Crown Heights with amazing rent and a great living space. We have a home just as Talya assured us. My family can finally start our new life in New York City and I couldn't be more thankful for that. read more

This review is based on initial interactions with the various agents and not on a renting experience, which I don't think I'll be pursuing. I will simply say that I reached out to several agents in August 2018 regarding units I was interested in looking at. I received no response. I then gave it another try while looking for units recently after logging into my profile months later and seeing a totally unsolicited message from one of the agents Jose. I replied to Jose letting him know about my less than lackluster experience previously and that I would give Nooklyn another chance. I asked several agents again, including Jose about some units. Jose got back to me telling me he would look into some things for me. I had also posted an ad on another separate website, inquiring regarding listings, which Jose then replied to with the same unsolicited message he sent me on Nooklyn! Are you a bot Jose? So I replied telling him I was still waiting for his answer on Nooklyn. I just checked and looks like he read my message. He just chose not to reply to it. As stressful as it is already to look for an apartment in NYC, I don't need the nonsense. I would not recommend. The two stars are for the roommate feature on their site which is arguably kinda cool if I wasn't engaged and planning to live with my to-be husband. read more

AMAZING experience!! I have lived in Manhattan for 3 years and have always tried to move to Brooklyn only to get places snatched up within an hour. My boyfriend and I worked with Rachel Skumanich and she was a DREAM. Rachel was very real, easy going, and fast acting. Rachel's kind, funny, and so incredibly friendly - you will not be jerked around with her. I never once felt like we were being lied to only to better benefit Nooklyn or Rachel - THIS IS SO HARD TO COME BY. We have lived in 3 different places now and Rachel helped us find our HOME. If you're in a bind and want someone who you can totally trust and rely on to find you great places and fast - Rachel is the one you want to work with. I recommend Rachel let alone Nooklyn to EVERYONE. I consider Rachel a friend now! https://nooklyn.com/agents/14789 P.S. Nooklyn and Rachel gave us the coolest little welcome home package that had sage (much needed) a mug, stickers, gummy bears, popcorn, and local jam - I meannn why would you ever work with any other realtor scum who asks for 20% of your annual rent?? Nooklyn is where it is at. You will not be screwed here. read more

So glad we found and used Nooklyn for our new apartment in Bushwick! Stop wasting your time finding your next apartment and call these guys up or check out their website. Matt Schmitt, specifically, showed us around the neighborhood, let us check out number of different properties and answered all questions, was very patient, and had fantastic communication throughout the entire process of finding the right apartment for us and our cat and dog. He made us feel very comfortable every step of the way. I highly recommend him and Nooklyn.com as a whole for your search! read more

I had a terrible experience with them. I put a good faith deposit down on a 3 bed in Bushwick that had an app in already. We were going to put the deposit on it if the app was rejected, but we decided we didn't want it--requested a refund the same day I put the deposit down. Called the main office, which originally told me it would take ten business days. I then contacted the broker we were working with, who told me I should be able to get it from their main office the next day since we never actually put a depo on an apartment. I trek all the way there at noon, only to be told (very curtly) by the receptionist that it wasn't there and she couldn't help but the accountant said I should have it by the end of the week. Contacted the broker who sent me an email that was sent from someone the previous night (Diana?) who confirmed that I should have been able to pick it up--I showed that to the receptionist who, again very curtly, told me it wasn't available and there was a miscommunication. The whole experience was really unprofessional and disorganized, and the unfriendly, unhelpful receptionist made it worse and more frustrating. The broker I worked with was very nice and responsive and showed me a lot of stuff and was good about answering all my questions (oh which there were many), but was 15 minutes late to our first appointment and delayed our showing to another apartment I wanted to see by nearly an hour--was originally at 6:30, wound up seeing him at 7:45. They have a lot of nice no-fee listings and can help you find roommates, but my experience wasn't a good one. Update: They eventually refunded my full deposit (including fees that were supposed to be nonrefundable). Despite my bad experience, that was very nice. read more

We had a totally seamless experience finding a new place with Nooklyn. I am normally hesitant to work with brokers and firms, and we happened to find Nooklyn organically through a friend. They showed us a really fantastic apartment that wasnt even listed or advertised and we took it. The agent was really helpful and we felt like she was on our side rather than scamming us. There wasn't even a broker fee. A+++ We are so thankful for them finding us a new home! read more

I was lucky enough to have the help of Christiaan Fourie in looking for my latest apartment. Christiaan worked with me and my girlfriend to secure our first choice in apartment and was extremely professional, transparent, kind and helpful through the entire process, often going above and beyond what I'd come to expect from NYC brokers. I would recommend Christiaan to any of my friends and colleagues without hesitation. read more

Awesome. Steve found me my place and before he took the deposit he went over the whole application in detail to make sure I knew exactly what I needed to get approval on it. It came through in 2 days, signed and moved in on time and it was surprisingly clean from past experiences I've had with renting. I'd recommend Nooklyn to friends and have already and two are already renting through them. Good stuff. read more

Unbelievable waste of time dealing with these people. I only had x amount of money to put towards a deposit. It's been tied up with them for 3 weeks now, for an apartment I was told I was securing. Because someone else offered more than the advertised price, I was told no. Three different Nooklyn employees reached out to "help" but basically did nothing other than wasting more time. I don't know if I will have money to put towards an apartment with another company. Straight up robbery. They stole my time, and most Importantly my sanity. Super frustrating experience. It doesn't have to be like that. Good people will help, Nooklyn people will try to scam you any way they can. Just save yourself trouble go with pretty much any other company offering the same thing. Honesty is a huge policy these people obviously were never introduced to. Also went into the Nooklyn office and was greeted by what looked like high school students during a study hall break at best. No professionalism, or follow up what so ever. Finding a home is scary do not put it into this companies hands!!!! Run run run read more

I was daunted by the idea of looking for a new place in Brooklyn but I really wanted to stay in the hood I know and love. I decided to check out Nooklyn to see if they could help. Best decision ever. I ended up working with Eric and within a few days we found a great place right by the L. It was the most painless apartment hunting experience I've ever had! Totally recommend it! read more

I'm writing this about 8 months too late. Let me begin by saying that I did, in fact, find my current apartment through Nooklyn. My roommate and I were in love with the apartment when we first saw it, especially that our broker told us that it had central air. We immediately went back to the Nooklyn offices to sign papers. After moving in, we found out there was no central air (of course). We were unhappy to say the least, so we contacted our broker and asked him to kindly amend the situation and help us pay for air conditioning units, as what he told us was a flat-out lie. He proceeded to yell at me. Once he calmed down, he apologized and admitted he was wrong in his actions. He agreed to pay us for two air conditioning units. When we went to pick up his check, it was not as much as we had agreed on. When I called to see if it was a mistake, he verbally assaulted me, telling me how "spoiled" I am, and how I will never be successful in life. This apartment is great, but is definitely too expensive for its lack of central air. This may have been a one-off situation, but it is one that has stuck with me. It has not yet been made right. read more

After moving to New York from the UK I found the process of finding and renting the right apartment difficult and frustrating. I came across Nooklyn and really liked their funky website and social media. I met Steve soon after, when he showed me an apartment in Williamsburg. I really liked the place and after that the process could not have been easier. Steve helped me through all the paperwork and it was complete within a few days. We are so happy with our new home & the service from Nooklyn. I can not recommend them, or Steve highly enough. read more

First time using Nooklyn to look for an apartment closer to my office in Midtown. I was looking for a 3 bedroom with my two roommates. Rafe was our agent and I cannot say enough great things about him. Not only was he knowledgeable and fast to reply to all our questions via text and phone call but he was super friendly and accommodating. He picked us up from the subway station in Bushwick and drove us around to all the viewings all while being a tour guide -- offering tips on hot spots, parking, where to get the best coffee and history of Bushwick. We saw some beautiful places all with a bit different variety of amenities so we can really see the best range the area has to offer. I highly recommend Nooklyn and if you're lucky enough to have Rafe as your agent, trust that you are in good hands! read more

Last month I was looking for an apartment in the Bushwick area and a friend referred me to Nooklyn. I was hesitant at first because I'm so use to just looking on my own and not with a broker. I couldn't have been more wrong. I worked with Jessie and she was amazing. When I told her where and basic idea of what I was looking for, she got back to me instantly. She showed me apartments I could afford and that I actually liked. In the past, I've had people bullshit me around-especially in Brooklyn, but not Jessie. Unfortunately had to move back to DC for awhile and didn't end up putting a deposit down. BUT I'll be back in 4 months and will be going straight to Nooklyn. read more

Nooklyn - I hope you read this !!! My management company gave Nooklyn our apartment to rent as we were moving out. The same day that Nooklyn received my phone number, I got over 15 phone calls and texts within four hours from different realtors from Nooklyn. Most of them were extremely rude, demanding that I give them our keys even though my roommate and I had not even started moving out yet. When I refused, I was talked down to by the realtor (Diego), and he demanded my roommates number and information as well as kept asking for our keys for the entire week we were moving out of the apartment. Although I made myself available to be home in order to show the apartment, almost every realtor flaked on their appointment times and did not even inform me. I have never dealt with such an unprofessional company, especially since I was not even using them to find an apartment but they were trying to sell mine and they treated me TERRIBLY. It is NOT ok to call and text at all hours of the day, non-stop, and then talk to me like I am making it difficult for them when I am working and cannot answer the phone. Of the 10 realtor numbers that I have saved in my phone from Nooklyn, only three of them actually treated me with respect, their names are : Cris, Danielle, and John. It's completely unacceptable to treat people the way that I was treated by the brokers at Nooklyn; if they want to show my apartment they should NOT demand things from me and talk down to me, but act professionally and treat people the way that they would like to be treated. I was hesitant to submit a review, as I didnt actually rent an apartment through them, but I couldn't believe the way that this company treated me and my roommate through the process. read more

Jesse is AMAZING. Helped us get the apartment of our dreams and dealt with our insanity the entire time :)

Ended up not getting an apartment through Nooklyn but did find one of my roommates through them. Very knowledgeable and helpful agents who are young and understand how difficult it can be being a post-grad trying to find an apartment in New York. read more

I needed an apartment very fast, moving from far away, and Nooklyn helped me out. I worked with Ory Baum and got myself an awesome apartment in under a week. Very friendly and responsive and helpful, exactly what you need from a realtor. Ory was very considerate of my price range and "style" of apartment I was looking for, and we found several matches quickly, and one of them worked out great. Couldn't have been any more seamless. I'll be using them again in the future. read more

Anita at Nooklyn was great. We had original set up a viewing for a different place but after Anita informed us it would be too small for our preferences she suggested we check out a different place, and we are living there now! Anita was great letting us attempt to view the place multiple times. Not there fault persay but front door key didn't work so couldn't get back in! Only complaint was they had overbooked Anita for our lease signing so we were working with another broker who had not seen the place so he couldn't answer my questions honestly and when your signing a lease you want honest answers! read more

My roommates and I worked with Jake when looking for our first apartment in Brooklyn, let alone in New York City itself. We fell in love with the first apartment we looked at and Jake was so helpful throughout the whole process. He was always just a call or text away from all of our many, often annoying (haha), questions. He even spoke on the phone with my very worried father to help him better understand the process and the area. He was super honest, made us feel comfortable and that we were making the right decision in renting our Bushwick apartment. Awesome company to work with and great realtors! 10/10, would recommend :) read more

I can't speak to all Nooklyn employees, but I will suggest to all considering working with them, avoid Kate Quintard. She is unresponsive, vague, rude, and apathetic to client concerns. It's a shame, because it seems like a lot of the other Nooklyn brokers reviewed here have done a good job. It's no coincidence that Kate Q has several poor reviews posted here. I had a frankly horrific experience with her. She took our 500$ apartment deposit and never reimbursed us when thing feel through. On top of that, my girlfriend and I almost ended up homeless due to her lack of urgency and concern. I will never work with Nooklyn again. If you do decide to work with Nooklyn, steer clear of Kate Q. read more

James was amazing. He drove us around with our 14 month old, and was very easy to talk to, very honest and upfront, and not at all pushy. It took us two almost full days to find a place we liked, and James was very patient as we reassessed our price range (went up) and needs (changed from 2 bed to 3 bed, etc). When we had finally decided on our apartment, James handed us over to Jesse, who was in charge of paperwork. We had some delays with our guarantor, and we were getting a bit concerned that we were going to have to restart the apartment quest , but Jesse managed to get the landlord on board with us, and we are now safely moved in. We signed a lease on a Saturday, and got the keys right after. Fantastic bunch of people. Highly recommend to everyone. read more

I want to like Nooklyn and Jesse, the broker that helped me, but I can't and I would never recommend this company to anyone. The HORRIBLE landlord, the pressure I felt to sign a lease (for more than a year or "the landlord wouldn't approve us") and the lies I was told make me feel more anger than I've ever felt towards anything in my life. 1. I specified what kind of apartment I wanted - was continuously shown apartments over my price range, with more bedrooms than I needed. 2. I asked if there was central air - was LIED TO and told there was both central heat and a/c. Only found out there was not central a/c four months after living in my apartment. I've spent hundreds on a/c units that I had to beg my landlord to install - because our lease prohibits us from doing any sort of anything to the apartment. 3. I asked if the landlord and management company were good, easy to work with, and helpful - was again LIED TO and told they were great and no one ever had any complaints about them. This lie became apparent withing a week of moving in. 4. I was told there was laundry (washer/dryer) in the basement, a huge selling point for me - I am now six months into my lease and there is still no laundry in the basement. This list could go on forever but it becomes cloudy who is at fault for the remaining complaints I have, a constant battle between Jesse/Nooklyn and my landlord. When he was brokering, Jesse seemed like he was genuinely helping me and had my best interest in mind so I do feel somewhat bad writing such an unhappy review. But then I remember the lies I was told and the disgusting manner in which things were dealt with and I don't feel bad. On top of everything I have spoken with other people in my building and everyone has the same complaints about Jesse and Nooklyn (and our landlord). Stay away from Nooklyn as well as the landlord W Management. read more

Hayley at Nooklyn helped me find my new apartment. She was incredibly helpful in making sure to provide options that fit exactly within our price range and all the specifics of what we were looking for. Most places I've used in the past have been very sketchy and difficult to work with. This is not the case with Nooklyn. I highly recommend using their services. More specifically, Hayley was a great person to work with. read more

Beware of CRIS (worst agent in the entire universe). My experience with Nooklyn was equivalent to my personal hell on loop. I would not recommend finding your apartment through this company to my worst enemy. Their agents were completely unresponsive and unhelpful. If anything they made the process much more difficult and stressful than it needed to be. There were problems with every single step of the process. He was overly pushy and rude all while being completely incompetent. There were several miscommunications and at times we could not get a hold of our agent for multiple days. The best part was showing up to move in with all of our furniture and belongings and the previous tenants were not notified of our move in date. Nooklyn assured us they would 100% be moved out and they hadn't even begun to pack. The agent did NOT have our best interest in mind AT ALL. He wasted countless hours of our time. At all costs do NOT use Nooklyn. read more

This review is actually for Romy. The other agents do not even compare to her level of professionalism. I had a few agents from nooklyn listing bait and switch us, not show up to appts, only send me one listing that disregarded the fact that I said I had a dog, etc. Romy is polite, respectful, professional, and THOROUGH. She has sent me multiple listings, followed up, texted me videos, and more. I highly recommend using her to find your apt. read more

Needless to say, hunting for an apartment in New York is an exhausting process, but KJ (Keanya) at Nooklyn offered a glimmer of hope in an otherwise dark abyss of shady brokers and misleading online listings. She was extremely helpful to my wife and I as we looked for an apartment in Williamsburg and Downtown Brooklyn. She proactively sent us listings in our budget and really listened to us to determine which units would be right for us. She made the process very easy and straightforward. Ultimately, we did not rent through Nooklyn but would recommend KJ to anyone looking for an apartment in NYC! read more

I was shown apts by Kate Quintard and Ryan McLaughlin. I would recommend them both. Kate brought me to a beautifully renovated apt in Bed-Stuy and Ryan met me last minute to show an apt in Ridgewood which I really appreciated. Both Kate and Ryan were great about following up and telling me about other listings I might be interested in. Ultimately I didn't end up renting through Nooklyn but next time I'm looking to move I'll definitely go back to them. Worth noting, Nooklyn has an app where you can message the agents directly which is convenient but you're better off just calling them or emailing. read more

Nooklyn is fantastic! My roommate and I needed an apartment by January 15th and Diego delivered! Completely game-changing experience. Finding an apartment in NYC does NOT have to suck. Nooklyn agents are kind, warm, flexible, and above all really CARE about finding you an apartment that you're happy with. I worked with Siobhán and I could not imagine a lovelier human being. She met me in Bushwick completely on my schedule, and gave me a heartening pep talk when I told her we wanted to hold out for something a bit bigger. The minute I expressed an interest in a really fabulous apartment (their website is INCREDIBLE -- with the best photos, most informative maps, etc), she not only scheduled to meet me the next day to see it, but PRE-negotiated the price down a full $200 -- before I'd even seen it! Insanity. The whole thing couldn't have been smoother and more pleasant. I only saw apartments I was interested in -- not bait and switches, and nothing that didn't fully meet the requirements I'd expressed. Cannot recommend this place highly enough! Email Siobhán at nooklyn next time you need a place and I swear she'll absolutely slay your expectations. read more

Nooklyn is the best real estate company I've worked with so far in New York. Two years ago, my roommates and I found our current apartment with one of their agents, and everything went very smoothly. Paperwork was handled quickly; questions were answered thoroughly. Lease signing went well, and we eventually renewed our lease with the management company. This summer, I've decided to rent a one-bedroom, and one of my roommates is moving away. Initially, I tried to find places myself through sites like Trulia and NakedApartments. Most of the listings were either not ideal or outdated. Since we had decided not to renew our lease, Nooklyn was already in contact with us to show our apartment to prospective tenants. Taylor Clark was the first to show our place, and I remembered him from when we initially got the apartment. During the showing, he mentioned that I could contact him if I wanted to see anything they had. All of Nooklyn's listings at the time were over my budget, so I continued to try other sites. When I finally gave up a couple weeks later, I looked again at Nooklyn's site. There were two listings at the top of my budget, so I immediately contacted Taylor about them. It was pretty late in the evening when I texted, but he was extremely responsive (+1). He was also upfront about the fact that one of the two had a half-month's fee. We scheduled a viewing of the listing for the next morning. He picked me up at my apartment in his nice station wagon. He contacted me before he was going to arrive and even asked if I wanted coffee (+1). We viewed the apartment, which I really liked. Since I was going out of town right after the showing, I was in somewhat of a rush and couldn't really decide if I should apply for the place then and there. Taylor let me put down a portion of the deposit (refundable) to hold the apartment as long as I told him by the next day if I really wanted the place (+1). He also immediately made a phone call to confirm when I asked if I could have bars placed on the rear windows since I was on the ground floor. Taylor drove me back to my place for my paperwork (which I had already put together) and then to the office where I easily and quickly completed a couple pages for an application and put down the deposit. I ended up deciding to take the apartment, and Taylor was very informative about what I still needed to submit and when I needed the rest of the deposit, etc. It was a very smooth application process. Once I was approved, he also sent me a copy of the lease before the signing so that I could review it. There were a couple issues I had with it, which Taylor addressed immediately. Even at the signing, he was a great help. The owner of the apartment ended up having an issue with his portion of the broker's fee, which would have led to my having to pay the entirety. Instead of allowing this, Taylor agreed to only my half-month's portion, absorbing the loss of the other half (+5). It is in no way fair for Taylor, but I truly appreciated that he didn't at any point make me feel like I should pay more of the fee. Neither did he let what surely was a frustrating and disappointing situation color the remainder of our appointment (+1) The only reason I put 4 stars instead of 5 is because a couple issues have occurred with Nooklyn showing our current apartment. They were addressed. tl;dr: Nooklyn is a good real estate company. I really recommend Taylor Clark. read more
