A wild ride, but worth it. Four stars now, possibly five when I settle into my new home. A roommate and I worked with Tom O'Malley, who helped us narrow down a spot that was within our budget. We knew right away that this guy was down-to-earth, likable, and on our side as much as the landlord's side. This was very important, as I know many agents treat tenants like mere faces to another paycheck. When we backed out of a first apartment, Tom suggested several others, one of which became the one. We had a lot of issues with Rhino (not MySpace NYC's fault), but Tom humanized the challenge with us and ultimately helped us work things out. Throughout the process, we've FaceTimed, texted, and he even bought my friend and I coffee after a viewing. Four weeks later, we signed our lease, and we just got the keys this past weekend. My roommate and I don't officially move into the place for another couple weeks, so we've got hope it was a great fit! read more

I contacted for a tour of a unit, agent Steve would not acknowledge that an offer letter is a form of income. And would not provide me with the application. Disqualified me as a tenant before I even applied. I have a credit of 720 and will be making an appropriate amount with my boyfriend . And then when I read him the fair housing laws he proceeded to ask me for my ID, taxes, paystubs for current job- doesn't make sense as I'll be starting the new job next month. And will have a new income. I am applying with bf and he proceeded to tell me I won't qualify because our combined income of 110k won't work for a unit for 1850.00 I have never in my life delt with someone who doesn't understand the basic rights of tenants, I wasn't even asking to apply. I wanted to see the application to see if I qualified. I am not sending a random person my ID, taxes and paystubs. That's incredible unsafe. This company was so helpful until we signed the lease and it was a done deal. They lied to us about so many things. They lied about apartment features, noise pollution, things in the area, they lied about renovations being completed prior to move in (WE DIDN'T HAVE TOILETS PHYSICALLY IN THE APARTMENT OR WORKING WATER FOR OVER A WEEK). There was moldy furniture and broken glass everywhere that we had to clean up. They lied about my cat to my roommate who is allergic to cats and said I said I would keep my cat in my room all the time, which they never mentioned to me and I never said. MOST IMPORTANTLY: They lied about this being a "shared space" situation and told us that we were not liable for the rent of the people they assigned to live with us in the instance that they do not pay. One of the people they assigned to us has not paid rent in months and guess who is liable? The rest of us! And they would not respond to clarify this "shared space" thing that they told us. Getting an apartment is a very stressful process, made worse by this company. The closing agent Rachel is absolutely clueless. She doesn't answer calls or emails unless you're giving her money. We had lots of problems that arose during lease signing and she didn't help at all. She couldn't tell us where our keys were, how to pay our rent, when to dispose of trash, what our landlord's name was--nothing. Didn't even spell our names correctly on the lease the first time. She also couldn't contact other people in her own company to resolve our issues. Instead she gave me her colleagues' numbers and had me call them, saying they were "playing phone tag." I was supposed to go back to work after signing but the process took over 3 hours. The receptionist was able to get these people on the phone but Rachel wasn't. Honestly this company should pay its customers for the amount of work they have to do when Rachel decides she doesn't feel like it. While I waited for hours just to get an answer from anyone, I had the displeasure of watching all the employees screw around, including climbing on desks, talking about their sex lives and making jokes about drug addicts. Finally, we were told by the broker that the apartment would be cleaned up when we moved in, but it was filthy. The kitchen had food stains and old food still left behind, the bathroom looked like someone had been using it while it was on the market. The floors weren't even swept. We spent over a week cleaning the place just so we could comfortably move our furniture in. When we had problems with the landlord, I found out that MySpace gave me the wrong name for the management company. It wasn't even close. The only way I could figure out who my landlord was was by googling the phone number they gave me which was the ONLY contact info I had. If they were this much of a mess before we put a deposit down, we would've avoided them. But they really kept it together until they had our money and then they just dropped the ball completely. Any repairs or damages I encountered were resolved in a matter of days. I also got my security deposit back 3 days after moving out, which is typically not the case. Had a terrible experience with agent Natalie. We had a deal for the apartment ready, everything was approved. We asked the Landlord a discount for the apartment to which he agreed (the previous tenant payed $600 less and minus the fee which adds up in our case to a total increase of $1000 monthly!!!!!) and in that moment Natalie took the phone from his hands and yelled that there will be no discounts. They have already sent us the lease agreement documents. I was away for work, and Natalie insisted that I have to sign everything in person within 24 hours, which was physically impossible. I asked to sign electronically, which is an absolute common practice and more practical (I have signed a lease before with other people when one of the roommates was not present at the signing and that was never an issue) Later she was insisting that the money has to be sent immediately with the lease that has to be signed by notary and sent by mail (2021). We could not get in touch with the landlord whatsoever. Later she said she will get back to us, and after they ran our credit scores she said that she will talk to the Landlord about the discount we asked, and after that she completely vanished and stopped responding. The apartment was rented by someone else. Let me tell you what: I will show you a restaurant in town which you already found yourself and knew about it's existence, I will take you there. You pay the price of your meals and then pay me the same amount for doing absolutely nothing. That makes me a scumbag, but real estate agent is a profession. What a world. Good ol' bait-and-switcharoo. I viewed a cool apartment that my agent wasn't sure was off the market, but he convinced me to put down a $1k "good faith" deposit to hold it just in case. It wasn't until after I made the payment that I received the following *extremely important information that should have been provided up front*: - Realtor disclosure form ("should have sent that to you earlier"). - Notice that a separate landlord application had to be filled out in addition to the Myspace app. - Requirement on the landlord application that I provide my social security card. Not number, CARD. That shit is sketch as hell. DO NOT EVER GIVE OUT YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD OUT FOR A RENTAL APPLICATION, PEOPLE. - Name of the management company (Bronstein Properties, LLC). After a quick google/Yelp search I found countless complaints about bad service and buildings full of pests and neglected repairs. Yikes. I told my agent that I wasn't comfortable moving forward based on this info. He gave me a guilt trip on the phone but ultimately conceded that my deposit would be refunded. After a week of no action, my agent turned into a straight up ghost when I checked in for an update. It took over two weeks of multiple emails, texts, phone calls to the office and website contact forms to get my money back. Never did hear from my agent, either. Agent - Rachel Villanueva Not sure what kind of company this is, but their communication and organizational skills are horrible. Was told we would get our keys by a certain time and it never happened. On moving day I had to wait outside with all my stuff for over 2hrs for them to deliver the key. There's 4 roommates living in this apartment, yet we were only provided with 2 keys. Call me crazy but I think it's managements job to provide their tenants with the right amount of keys. Prior to this, I was in contact with my agent who refused to return my phone calls and would only reply through text. Even after I said can you please give me a ring I was responded to with text messages. Next there was our lease fiasco. One my roomates was completely missing from the documents. So they wrote it in manually. Come to find out it also happened to my neighbors downstairs. Which brings me to my next point - They signed a lease with the wrong apartment number. My lease must have been used as a template because during moving day there was two people who moving their stuff in when they were actually the unit below. They referred to the lease which listed our apartment... These people take your deposit and pretty much tell you not to contact them thereafter. After leasing an apartment through MySpace, I DO NOT recommend them at all. Please do yourself a favor and pay for a broker or use another realty company. This is my third NYC apartment and my first time using MySpace. Upon arriving at their office, they were able to show us apartments with no appointment, so that was convenient. This was the only convenient thing about their services. We viewed multiple apartments and made a selection based on the three that were shown to us. We inquired about the necessary paperwork and then gathered all the documents. It was nearing the end of the month, so all of the prospective tenants had their paperwork collected within a day or two. After submitting them, MySpace did not communicate with us for TWO DAYS! It was two days before the end of the month and they finally called us back. When we arrived at the office, they informed us that our intended apartment was taken and we had to go with a second option. It was a sneaky/high pressure tactic. We didn't have a choice, it was go with the apartment or not have a place to live. The apartment we decided on seemed nice at first, but we soon realized that when we viewed the apartment, the realtor drove us the nice way through the neighborhood. We now know that we have to a half mile through the projects in order to get to the subway. Nothing about this process was easy or transparent. Please do not give them your business. read more

If I could give them a 0 I would. They make you feel like you're getting a great deal, throwing around the typical Real Estate talk - "free months" etc. The realtors are really friendly, sure. But they are not experienced, do not treat you like a client, and do not advocate for you. If I'm paying a huge sum of money - I expect to be treated like a client. Their processes are all jumbled up, they do not organize their paperwork. Lease signing is conveniently during work hours - which is ironic considering the amount of money you end up paying, you'd think they can assume you'd be at WORK at your JOB so you can AFFORD "40x your rent" jesus christ. Admittedly we screwed up by choosing to use them.We got stuck with an extremely shitty landlord - rude, sexist, impossible to reach - and who eventually cheated us out of $6,000+ They don't disclose the landlord information until after we sign. Which may be typical, but having since worked with other realtors - other firms are much more professional and look out for the well-being of their clients, simply by disclosing any information that might F you over. Do NOT make the same mistake as we did. $6000 is a lot to lose. Myspace will go silent on you once they have your money. If you are renting from them Look up DEODAT LOWTAN and make sure the property you are renting is not under him. He also goes by the name of "Rupert" - run away, run far, far away. read more

I used MySpaceNYC on two occasions and it did not work out. Though they did help me get the balance (minus $300) of my security deposit returned, the representative I spoke with clearly did so in favor of maintaining good relations with the landlord (pending me writing a Better Business Bureau complaint). And it still took two months for me to get this balance returned. The first apartment was clearly a rent-stabilized apartment that was being admittedly rented as rent-stabilized but was market rent at $2500; the second apartment had cheap renovations with no soundproofing, a loud, aggressive entitled upstairs neighbor, and a years-long embedded poison ivy problem in the backyard. Seriously my experience was traumatizing. And their commitment to working with landlords who are less than favorable to tenants needs/rights for the sake of profits was clear. Be careful to read the lease and find as much as you can about the building, management, neighbors, etc. They do appear to try to work with tenants but seem often not knowledgeable about the apartments and work with shady landlords/real estate companies. read more

What seemed to be a fairly simple exchange turned out to be a complete waste of time and money. I reached out to Christian Dosamantes to view a listing at 68 St. Paul's Place in Brooklyn. After confirming a time to view the listing, I was told that it was just taken off of the market. A few days later, she reached out to me to say that the apartment was now available again. I scheduled a time to go view it, loved it, and submitted my good faith deposit. I was told that the deposit ensures that my application is viewed first, meaning that others can view the apartment, but pending the evaluation of my application materials, I would be offered or denied first. I submitted my deposit of $500, plus a $15 processing fee, and application. Then I was told that the apartment was taken that morning and they have another listing one floor below that I can use the deposit for, or I would receive a full refund. I viewed the other apartment and was told, by the super, that he was under the impression that the apartment was already taken and that the new tenant would be moving in soon. When I reached out to Christian for clarification, she didn't have any answers regarding what was going on. Now, that was two apartments that were never available and a deposit of $515 that I lost. I requested the full refund, via text and email. I was promised that the money would be returned to my account in 3-5 business days. Five business days past, and when I reached out for a status update of the refund, I was informed that there was no communication with their finance department to issue the refund and it would now take an additional two days. It took more than two more days but I finally got $500 back. The $15 "processing fee" was not returned. Don't work with this company, if you can avoid it. The bait and switch tactics, lack of communication, and lack of follow up regarding refunds are unacceptable. I wish that I could give them zero stars. read more

My agent was profoundly exploitative, pulling some extremely sketchy legal shit in an attempt to "make sure we got the apartment" - I then had to spend 3 whole days dealing with the consequences. No one in this company communicates with each other - our landlord did not know we were even moving in, nothing was cleaned, et cetera. As if that weren't bad enough, the other day one of their agents just WALKED RIGHT IN TO OUR APARTMENT WITHOUT KNOCKING to allegedly "show someone the room for rent" (they had the wrong floor)! This company is HORRIBLE! I WILL NEVER USE THEM!!!!!! I asked about a listing and was instructed that the only way I would be able to see it is submitting a $500 application fee. After doing so I was told almost immediately that the apartment was taken just minutes before (this is how they get their money) I was then shown other apartments and saw one I like but wasn't fully ready to commit to. Same thing applied with the $500 so that payment transferred over to the new apartment. Unfortunately, I was unable to continue the process because my potential roommate pulled out. I was told that being that my money was already processed for the new place I was shown, the only way for me to receive the money back would be for me to complete an entire application. I should have known something was up then when the broker then sent me a leasing agreement and another application for the buildings management company which was another $25 that wasn't refundable. I ONLY SAW 5 PHOTOS of this place and didn't want to pursue going further with the application till I had saw it in person. He said If I didn't fully complete the application there was no way for me to get my money back. Well long story short they conned me out of HALF my deposit because I already sent the money. The "broker" by the name of DALE BROWNE told me that my money would not be refunded to me but placed towards applying for another apartment. Because I was approved for the apartment anyway and didn't want to move in I lost half my deposit. The agent was very kind and persistent over the phone and through text and I fell for it. Any way they basically try to HOLD YOUR MONEY HOSTAGE if you no longer wish to do business with them or lose half. Half my money is gone but I'm glad I don't have to deal with them again! read more

They need to be transparent about their rent prices BEFORE someone applies for an apartment. I applied for an apartment that I thought was $1650 a month, but when I was about to fill out the application, I was asked if I could pay the gross amount of $1850 for the first month and security because the "landlord just needs to just have it listed like this for his mortgage company." Yeah, this doesn't sound suspect at all. Nowhere in the listing did it state any of this. The broker then explained that I would get 1.25 months free. I don't want any months free, I want the advertised priced! Too much of this crap going on right now, just be upfront! read more

I will say that the agent I worked with came highly recommended to me by others, and I think that if deals go through smoothly she is probably great to work with. However deal do NOT always occur perfectly, and I would still expect my agent to be professional and courteous. NOT the case here. Our agent straight up lied to us about the amount of money we would be putting down, initially saying it would be no more than 2x month's rent for the security deposit and first month for us to get in. I put down $1,000 deposit for the apartment to get off the market. When it came time to pay, our agent tried to get us to sign without seeing any real numbers. Luckily we refused, and when numbers finally came through, it was closer to 3x rent than the "2x max" she had told us. When we brought this up she straight up tried to gas light us, saying she had said 3x rent all along. Luckily we had a copy of the contract we signed to hold the apartment which clearly stated we wouldn't be paying more than 2x rent. When we confronted her with this she ghosted us! Never heard from her again despite phone calls and emails, and that $1000 I had put down seemed to be lost forever. I even contacted the MySpace email and got no response from the firm. Thankfully I thought to contact my bank and explained to them what happened. They stated that they would temporarily refund the money and reach out to MySpace immediately. Sure enough, hours after I got off the phone with the bank and told them what happened and that MySpace was unresponsive I get a receipt for my $1000 refund from MySpace (excluding service charge) but still no response from my emails to the agent or the firm. Talk about your tail tucked between your legs! Pathetic. Clearly getting the bank involved scared them into submission, and in the end I'm only out the $90 service charge. I still hate that they profited at all from lying and manipulating me and my room mates. Shame on you. read more

Not only was the broker a liar, but our landlord was also a fraud that refused to return our security deposit (without cause). I have used myspace a few times to get a new apartment. They themselves are a pretty good company but I will say the management companies that they work with are less than professional. This past time, I found a gorgeous apartment with them - true 2 bedroom in Ridgewood for a great price. We were told that in order to sign the application we would need to put the application in immediately, and we did. For 2 weeks we heard nothing back and were being given the run-around about why we couldn't move in immediately (as originally planned and agreed upon). Myspace kept asking us for different types of paperwork that were not originally stated in the application, plus adding on fees that we had not agreed upon - a 500$ deposit for a pet, renters insurance, movers insurance, etc. They wouldn't give us the key until we made the appointment for gas. All of this should have been discussed up front and although I am not fully blaming the brokers, all of this information should have been known and discussed between them ahead of time. it was an extremely stressful situation that could have gone much smoother had they been in direct contact with the management office from the beginning. i now live in the apartment and all is working out but I would have appreciated if they had been more forthcoming and helpful from the beginning. With that said, myspace does have a lot to offer and I would definitely use them again in the future, I would just be more aware of what to ask up front. read more

And when delivered it always comes with a frown (or a rude remark I suppose). 1) When we moved in, we were promised a "broom clean" apartment (which is standard) that would be repainted. Sadly, they just never did anything they promised. Rewind a tad.. at the beginning of Sept, my East Williamsburg apt was flooded in the tropical storm, so I was between a rock and a hard place as i was forced to move out. My old place suffered mold and wall damage, and about an inch of flooding. I originally checked out Craigslist and real estate apps like Street Easy, more or less swinging in the dark, that is until I was introduced to Christian. She was the realtor who showed us a potential apartment, but with a very uncool landlord, who strung us along for nearly two weeks only to decline our application. Keep in mind me and my girlfriend are in the hospitality industry! This stress you'd figure who be enough to deter even the best of us, but Christian did more leg work and found us an even bigger place for slightly cheaper, in the same neighborhood we desired. Working with Christian restored my faith in humanity.. extremely professional and kind.. any form of communication was acceptable, emails, texting, a phone call or two.. had our backs reliably so, when we truly needed help! I don't recommend working with Myspace. There are certain things a realty agency should see to before they agree to show a unit, and certainly before they allow a prospective tenant to sign a lease. For example, they should make sure an apartment is cleaned and move-in ready (all that move-in ready entails--you wouldn't believe what wasn't done). Myspace did not see to those things for me. Throwing your hands up and referring the tenant to the landlord has its limits in the initial stages of the relationship. It spoke volumes. What I've deduced is that Myspace cares little to nothing about the quality of the landlords they work with, which makes them just as bad as a landlords who aren't fulfilling their responsibilities. Their responses here on Yelp claim that they're under new ownership, but it doesn't seem like the practices have changed. read more
