Inhumane bunch of people. Berman Realty is a multigenerational family business (patriarch Joe & sons Marc and Stephen) who seem to have lost sight of what it means to interact with humans. (Stephen is friendly. The other two are deeply unpleasant and tyrannical.) They're very nice when they're getting you to sign, but this pivots quickly once you're a tenant. Unless you walk on needles around them (or even if you do), they'll easily get nasty with you in a totally unwarranted way. The apartments themselves are really not great - prewar and dated with minimal amenities. The heat was uncontrollably hot and uncomfortable (85 degrees in the winter with all my windows open) and very loudly hissing radiators. The tenant below me had a ceiling fan that made my bedroom sound like a washing machine. They took months to repair a very bad leak in my wall (the walls across the length of my entire apartment looked like they had shingles) because the building is on a single boiler. There was no laundry in the building, and I used the coin-operated laundry in the basement of another unit a block away. They offered and then rescinded my lease renewal and hounded me out of the apartment when I took too long to get my shoes out of the hallway. I look back and can't believe I paid that much to live in that dusty, moldy shoebox of an apartment. SO MUCH DUST even though I vacuumed every week. When I moved into the apartment I had serious allergies, and later on the allergies subsided but I would get sick much more frequently than I ever had in my life. For the amount of rent they charge, you shouldn't be living in a health hazard. read more

These guys are super easy to get along with. If there's something that's a problem, they're quick to get it handled. We had a pigeon issue on our terrace and with one call had deterrents put on the roof edge. Maintenance issues are handled same day if possible and there's not a lot of back and forth you have to do. Definitely the best people I've ever rented from in my 10 years in New York. Efficient, thoughtful, thorough, professional and responsive. During my 3 year stay here, no matter what problem I had, from a slight leak in my skylight because of an unusually heavy downpour, to my toilet seat breaking because of normal wear-and-tear, it got fixed, no questions asked, within the day. We had a building blackout late one night because of construction a few streets down, and within 30min to an hour, Berman's electrician flew down to fix the problem. It was up and running within 2hrs. Their buildings and units are also some of the most beautiful, well maintained, and well-priced in the area. In terms of rent increases, they keep it to the bare minimum. A number of my friends have rented from the Berman's multiple times and all of us have only good things to say about them. I'll be sad to leave my unit this summer. I had a great 1 bed in a brownstone with an amazing skylight that was tranquil, beautiful, and steps away from the park. It was really a dream apartment. The most civilized rental experience... in a city where renting is often quite uncivilized. So, this is my thank you note to the Bermans. I've been renting in NYC for 20 years, and my husband for 15... and we both agree that the Bermans are the best landlords we've ever had. They maintain the buildings so well that things rarely break, but when they do, they are on it immediately. I could email them that my faucet was dripping, and it would be fixed when I got home from work. They never skimped on heat. Most apartments have dishwashers. As far as I know, all buildings seem to have laundry and bike storage in the basement. In the 5 years I lived in one of their buildings, I think they repainted the hall/stairwell 4 times. When renewing leases, the increase was never unreasonable. They start you off at the going market value, but if you stick around a few years, you wind up under market. Oh, and not paying a broker's fee really helps. I really appreciated that they were a neighborhood family business, and very professional. I've dealt with landlords who were very nice, but it was not what they did for a living, so they didn't really know what they were doing. I've also dealt with large management companies located in some other borough, and it would be impossible to reach someone by phone to get an issue taken care of. It was a comfort having the Bermans' office right down the block, and knowing if I called or emailed, I'd hear back immediately. Sadly, we moved out of the neighborhood and away from the Bermans. We are homesick for the Bermans... there's no way to sugarcoat this: our new non-Berman building sucks. read more

We met with Peter, who was immediately friendly when I first called them up. Peter drove us to see two different apartments, both in beautiful brownstones, and told us some stories about that part of Park Slope. He's been a realtor here for twenty five years, so he's got a lot of knowledge and experience with the area. In our short time with him, I got the sense that Peter and the rest of the staff at Berman (a few of whom we met briefly) are genuinely good, honest people. A lot of their listings are no-fee, since I believe they either own or manage a few brownstones, and the two apartments we saw were very nice at a reasonable price. If we hadn't lucked out and gotten our current apartment, we would have definitely signed for a place through Peter. And if or when we move again, we'll be calling him first thing. Berman really changed the game for our apartment search. My boyfriend and I were looking for a place in Park Slope, and we wanted to move in about 2 months so we figured we couldn't actually see an apartment that far ahead of time. However, in looking around, we actually found an apartment on craigslist that we really liked. When we called for a showing, we spoke with Marc at Berman Realty, as the place was owned by them. They were polite and helpful on the phone and we planned to see the place in a couple of days, just to get our feet wet. We met at their office, then walked over to the apartment. It is a family business and they all live in Park Slope, so they know the area very well. The apartment was in the heart of the Slope, in a beautiful Brownstone. We were shocked at how cute and nice it was inside as well, considering the low rent that fell nicely within our budget. We never felt badgered or pressured to take it, and he answered all of our questions patiently and let us look around for a little bit. We decided we wanted to apply back at the office, and the whole thing wrapped up in under 2 hours, with the lease signed and deposit in. Definitely not what we were expecting considering the NYC horror stories we'd heard (and lived)! Marc, and everyone in the office, was courteous, genuine, and down to earth, and we always felt like we were getting the honest truth, no scams or tricks at all. Coming from a place where I had mice, roaches, and leaks in my apartment, all I could ever wish for was a responsive management and a well-maintained building. With Berman, I found exactly that. My wife and I rented two different apartments from Berman Realty from 2008-2012 before leaving NYC. To put it succinctly, they were fair, attentive to our maintenance requests, and courteous. We recommend them and would have continued to rent from them if we had stayed in Brooklyn longer. To elaborate, our rent was (from what we could tell) fair and competitive for prime Park Slope. It remained unchanged from 2008-10, and went up in $50-$75 increments the last two years, which seemed very fair considering the general increases everywhere else during that time. We had several, totally normal maintenance requests over the phone or via email during the four-year period. These were always responded to and handled promptly. Also, it's worth noting that the maintenance people (notably someone we interacted with several times named Michael) were awesome--fast, competent, and friendly. No bad experiences. Lastly, it's worth noting that it's a family-run business that has been in the neighborhood for decades (as far back as the 60's, I believe, maybe further). It's a family-run business, and it's so great to be able to just swing by the office and drop our rent check off to the Bermans. The entire family is wonderful and so incredibly helpful. Any issue we've had over the past two years (just minor ones like clogged drains) have been taken care of immediately on the day that we email them. Practically unheard of in NYC! Bonus? NO FEE! When we first looked at the apartment and decided to apply, Joe simply walked us back to the office to fill out the application. While apartment hunting I used to carry basically our full financial histories because typical realty agencies require insane documents to simply apply. Not with the Bermans! I like Berman Realty, but don't agree with all the five-star reviews. The most exciting thing about Berman is that their inventory includes no-fee brownstone apartments in the heart of Park Slope - pretty cool, right? But while these apartments are generally well maintained, they are often *very* small, with decent sized living rooms but closet-like bedrooms. The last time I toured Berman's stuff, I encountered numerous couples who were moving out because they had outgrown their modest spaces (not a hard thing to do). Also, most of these brownstones are pretty old, with the laundry facilities stuck in creepy, dirty basements that could desperately use a remodeling. This isn't a terrible defect of the apartments, but it does take off that five-star shine for me. As for the customer service, it's pretty nice while you're thinking about renting, and less nice after you actually do it. These guys never did get me my tenant recommendation letter, after I asked for it three times! They were also rude to my fiancée a couple of times on the phone; I didn't witness this, but of course I believe her. The degree of niceness probably varies depending on who you get. So - an interesting option for a modest starter apartment, but hardly the Muhammad Ali of landlords. read more
