So happy to have a Bahn Mi sandwich place so close to campus! Came by on the first day they opened and I was amazed at how modern and spacious the place is. The prices for the sandwiches are around $7-9, pretty affordable compared to all the other food in the area. I got the combination sandwich and a lemonade. The bread is light and fluffy, with a nice crisp on the outside. Be careful when you eat though, since the bread can make a lot of crumbs. I really liked the sandwich - perfect balance of pate, veggies, and meat. For their hand squeezed lemonade, it was cold and sweet, really refreshing to drink on a hot day. New Bánh Mi sandwich spot opened it's doors on the 15th on Telegraph Avenue in Berkley! Shoutout to Rachel C. for taking me to try my very first Banh Mi sandwich. We got there around 4pm and ordered our food right away. The inside had a comfortable atmosphere with a restroom for guests. The location is perfect because it's right next to a few dessert spots. We ordered the Highlands-beef, the Mekong- chicken, and the Pagoda- tofu sandwiches. I got to try each one and the tofu was definitely my favorite with the chicken in 2nd place and then beef in last. The tofu and chicken sandwiches went so well with the amount of delicious pickled vegetables which were hella flavorful. Unfortunately.. I probably wouldn't order the Highlands-Beef for future visits. The beef in my opinion didn't have any flavor. I felt like I was just eating pickled vegetables, bread and something that resembled beef but without a taste. I'm not sure if all Bánh Mi sandwich spots use thick bread but I wish the bread was a little thinner. It felt a little much to have THAT much bread for the amount of vegetables and meat added. I'm Vietnamese and love banh mi! This is one of the best banh mi in the Bay Area. Some places just buy bread, pate, pickle, meat and veggies to make their sandwiches. Not this place. I ate each ingredient of their banh mi one at a time to taste the quality. The bread was very fresh and not too hard. It had a nice crust and the white part was very soft and tasted right. The pickles were probably homemade and pickled long enough. Their pickles were made correctly. I'm not sure if they are making or buying their pate, but the pate is really good. It had a nice pate taste without that funny/strange taste. The pork they used in their banh mi is the same one as the ones you would get in a good rice or bun plate. I can tell that all of the ingredients in their banh mi are hand picked and that the owner is Vietnamese and a perfectionist. This place is very delicious and worth trying. So excited to finally see their doors open! The interior is so cute and the workers were very friendly! I ordered their number one to get a feel of what their Banh Mi was like. I am usually a harder critic for Vietnamese food since I'm from South Bay with Little Saigon right next door, but Nom Nom Banh Mi is definitely comparable. The baguette was a little more dense than what I am used to, but still had that beautiful crunch of the exterior and pillowy softness of the interior! The pate had a deep and rich flavor which balanced so well with the pickled vegetables. On top of that, they finished making my order within 5 minutes! Good Sandwiches at a competitive price but service is lacking. I requested my sandwich for dine in but noticed the table facing the large windows on Telegraph was filthy - extremely dusty and bread crumbs everywhere. I kindly asked the cashier if she could wipe it down for me and didn't think much of this minor request. The elderly Asian lady who was standing adjacent to her replies by asking if I could sit at another table as they were understaffed. I was getting ready to sit down at a different table but immediately the cashier comes out and wipes the table down which was greatly appreciated. I noticed the table was still a bit wet from the cleaning thus I grabbed a napkin out of my pocket to dry it off.. However, I look over at the elderly Asian lady and she is giving me all kinds of dirty looks for this... Ironically, I also noticed the restroom has a sign stating "Don't Even Ask." Given that my first ever banh mi experiences were in south bay, I had somewhat high expectations entering Nom Nom. I ordered the district 3 combo banh mi and loved the meats inside. It was so flavorful and rich and I couldn't stop eating it. However, the balance of ingredients was not there and it felt like I was eating separate components of a banh mi rather than one whole dish. With every bite I tasted the bread for a couple seconds, then the meat, then the pickled veggies. I've never had this issue with other banh mi and I think it may be that the district 3 simply had too much bread for the amount of filling. I was also hungry soon after eating my full size banh mi which was disappointing. Overall, I'll keep Nom Nom in mind if I'm ever far southside and craving some banh mi but I won't go out of my way for it unless they improve their portions. read more

Decided to splurge on a $8-after-tax banh mi. It's longer than the typical $4 ones. I arrived midday and was the only customer waiting to order as the owner was holding loaves of bread and speaking with a photographer. I chose the traditional District 3 - my go-to choice with pate and cha (their version doesn't come with ham or head cheese). When the owner served it to me, I found the bread to be cold, but the pate had good flavor. I asked the owner and she said District 3 is supposed to be cold. I know the cha and veggies are cold, but was expecting the bread to be come out warm after it's been toasted. They said the bread was lightly toasted and went back to talking to the photographer. This banh mi place was good. We ordered both a tofu banh mi and a chicken banh mi. Both of the fillings/meat were well infused with flavor- especially the lemongrass tofu which is rare when purchasing a vegetarian banh mi. The price was also really reasonable, we bought two for $15 or so, so one sandwich is in the $7-8 range. However, the sandwich was pretty dry (which is typical for banh mi however) as the bread was dry and they didn't have any sauces to go along with the banh mi- I have noticed most banh mi places have peanut sauce or something else. So if you're expecting more than literally just the flavor of a banh mi sandwich, you should acquire some sides elsewhere! Otherwise, awesome that this place opened so close to UC Berkeleys campus, I'll be going there more for sure! read more

I've eaten here a few times. I thought the food was fine, overall, and not too disappointing. A decent banh Mi, though a little dry for my preference. I would rate the food 3 stars. However, it was not the food that inspired me to write this review. This restaurant seems to be following the trend of several restaurants in the neighborhood that are behaving recklessly lax with their COVID-19 safety protocols. I was going to eat here for lunch today and did not step foot inside as there were two staff members having a discussion in the kitchen next to the food, one with their face-covering removed. Based on another review on their page, this business does not seem to listen to other customers' safety concerns, so I don't expect this to change any time soon. if you are someone with a compromised immune system or otherwise wants to avoid potential COVID exposure I recommend you eat elsewhere. It does not take much for aerosolized coronavirus particles to make an indoors space unsafe. Caveat emptor. Addendum: 11/24/2020. I appreciate the time you've taken to reply, Tram. Maybe your practices have changed since I've last stopped by, so I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt. However, to be clear: what you're describing in your reply was not my experience observing the restaurant. Definitely one of the best Bahn Mi places I've been to outside of Vietnam ! The owners are the sweetest, inter-racial couple. A white husband and a Vietnamese wife who are there everyday with the most genuine and friendly service (if you'd like to call it that). They're always full of energy and very helpful with menu recommendations. They've remembered my orders and my name and are very accommodating with my friend to has several food allergies. They didn't charge him for extra items in substation of the ones that he couldn't have, which was nice as some places don't take that off the price. They've also sat down and talked to their regulars while they wait for their food. Their bread is homemade and is baked fresh daily, the meats are tender, juicy and full of flavor, and are very authentic in flavor. The pickled vegetables add a nice subtle bite to the sweet and savory meat that has also has noticeable garlic-lemongrass flavor. You can also get fresh jalapeños, which add a bit of heat as well and they're very good about accommodating to each persons tolerance levels, they're also very good about individually asking folks if it's to spicy or not. When I asked why that was so, no one could provide an answer and the dude, after waiting an extra couple minutes, begrudgingly put on a mask. I won't be eating here any time soon, not until the world is safer or Nom Nom takes things seriously. Regarding the business response: the woman here is partly right about the situation. The guy was in the back. Most of the time. But he totally wandered up to the front area, interacted with the bread, and eventually and sullenly put on a mask. New find on Telegraph! The owners Tram and Allen were very welcoming and gave me some good recommendations. I ended up ordering the grilled pork banh mi. Even after bringing it home, the bread and vegetables were still fresh, not soggy and wilted. I was the most impressed by the grilled pork- juicy and not over cooked, well seasoned, balanced well with the creamy spread, pickled vegetables, and sliced cucumbers.
