This place is hopping! Saturday afternoon on a chilly fall day, almost 4pm and there's a line out the door 10-15 people deep. The ordering system is self service at a single kiosk, the receipt prints out at the end of your order with a number, and they call out numbers when the orders are ready. The ticket printer was broken yesterday so I kinda had to guess which order was mine. Eventually they told me I could just grab the ice cream (pre-packaged) from the freezer to the left of the bar area. On the menu are some nifty creative tea drinks (a few with coffee too)--both hot and iced--and a smattering of dessert options. Popular drinks include their kuromitsu matcha latte (kuromitsu is like a Japanese brown sugar), tochucha yuzu lemonade (Japanese Arnold Palmer if you will), tochucha Americano. I came to try the tochucha ice cream and wasn't disappointed, the fragrant earthly and slightly floral tea flavor in the ice cream was quite unique. At $7 it was also a little pricey for a small cup but I guess ok to treat yourself once in a while. The shop is quite small so there are only 4 seats inside and about 6 seats outside under a covered street side seating area. Nippon Cha originated in Japan and they specialize in premium grade Japanese tea, which according to their website are largely single origin, first harvest teas, with tea leaves grown specifically in Japan for pure drinking tea (as compared to others that are for food preparation etc.), and they set quite strict standards for what they consider acceptable quality to carry their Nippon Cha branding. Aside from the to-go food and drink items, they sell a variety of Japanese teas, with hojicha and ceremonial grade matcha, being two of the more commonly known. It's vastly efficient and implies trust in customers--both wins, however you look at it. Of the four ice-cream flavors available to sample--tochucha, matcha, hojicha, and koucha--the tochucha was by far my favorite. So good that I ended up getting the Tochucha Yuzu Lemonade, which to be clear, is really a Yuzuade, as the dominant flavor was tochucha and yuzu. The matcha was not mixed well at all and sooo clumpy!! You can literally see the chunks of matcha powder in my drink pictured. It made the drinking experience pretty unenjoyable. Nippon Cha is a gorgeous spot with good matcha. I meant to get a classic matcha latte, but when I saw the Kuro Mitsu Matcha Latte I had to have it. My blood sugar was low, so the idea of a brown sugar latte was very appealing. This essentially tastes like half brown sugar boba, half matcha. If you get this iced, make sure to grab a straw so you can thoroughly combine the matcha with the sugar. I didn't and swirled the drink foolishly during my 15 min walk. It worked, but super inconvenient. They don't have a huge menu, which I quite like. The cafe had an open door today because of the beautiful spring weather which made it feel inviting. I heard really good reviews before coming and I do think it lived up to them -- but there wasn't anything super special in my opinion. It was still a solid drink though! The foam was perfect on the latte, and the matcha was strong enough. The matcha tiramisu on the other hand didn't have much of a matcha taste despite the dusting of matcha powder on top. However, it was very soft and light. There's not a lot of seating, so be prepared to take your drink and/or food to go. A little late to write this review, but as I was thinking recently of places I've been to the past 6 months that I wanted to write a Yelp review for, this was one of the first places that came to mind... I had the fortune of living in the Williamsburg area for about a month leading into the 2022 NYC Marathon. I think the Williamsburg location was only open for a couple months by the time I rolled around. The place specializes in first harvest matcha, which gives some really intense matcha flavor. If you're not a fan of the earthy tones that matcha gives, this will not change your mind, but as someone who is a big fan of matcha, I absolutely loved it. The first time I came I tried the matcha oat milk latte and you can definitely tell there's a different quality than your regular matcha lattes you might get at other places. Subsequent times I've gone I have either gotten the hojicha latte and kuro mitsu. I love hojicha in general and have only found one other place (not in NYC, but still in the US) that really rivals the quality. The kuro mitsu though is by far my favorite drink from there though. The mixture of brown sugar, oat milk, and matcha makes for an amazing pairing. Definitely something I still think about whenever I have a sweet drink craving. During that month stint, I would probably go here at least 2 times a week. It really is that good. Is it a bit pricey? Sure, but you're literally in NYC... not to mention the quality is definitely there. Went so much that the owner recognized the last time I went to visit. Gave me a sample of another tea they were planning on adding to the menu that they had exclusive rights to the tea farm from which was really neat.
