All this to say I tend to stay far away from hyped up coffee shops but my big bro wanted to hit Rhythm Zero, and he is big bro for a reason, so I obliged. I entered into a small space that feels vast. High ceilings. Minimal furniture. Huge Renaissance-style art on the walls. An environment tailor made for you to lose sight of yourself and order their $8 Coco Americana. I won't lie. I thought about it. A moment of weakness. "It's just an americano that swaps out standard water for chilled coconut water..." No. I went to the bathroom and looked myself in the mirror. COWARD! Who do you want to be? I walked out. Had 3 espresso shots in the latte yet it was still somehow so watered down and had an odd aftertaste. Big yikes overall, we could've dealt with the weird pretentious vibes if the coffee was actually good. Only upside is TakuSando is a block away. EDIT: For Bri Can totally understand if people have off days, maybe the baristas were having a bad day, it happens. Either way, the review reflects what we experienced. My friend got the espresso foam with coconut water drink and she enjoyed it a lot. I had a sip and it was pretty good. I also had a sip of her yuzu matcha and it was refreshing and had a nice balance of matcha and yuzu. I gave it a 3/5 still because of how severely a disappointed and shocked I was at how bad the regular matcha was. I've been to cafes that are known for matcha lattes with either some fancy cream or fruit purées where I got the regular matcha and was satisfied. This was not the same case.

I also tried the Matcha latte that my friend ordered and can say that was quite nice as well. There are several tables and small seats you can sit at to enjoy your drink. I've been there twice now, and both times for some reason the cream top coffee just didn't hit as well as the LA version, but still quite good and definitely worth getting. They do pay attention to detail here, and have great coffee, tons of seating, and a beautiful space, as well as a bathroom (I think they even have two). So I would definitely try them again; perhaps they were just settling into things, but it's a cool place and I hope they stick around. You can also buy their beans and assortment of coffee tools. The people at the counter were super nice.

I had a wonderful experience taking an iced matcha class at Kettl on Monday! I signed up for the…read moreclass before I got to NY and was able to work it into my busy schedule of being a cool aunt. My brother and I walked around the Greenpoint area and then he had to go pick up his kiddo from camp, so I explored the area then put Kettl into google maps thinking I was coming early for class to avoid the rain. I accidentally went to the wrong location and then it started pouring. The staff told me the other location was 10 minutes away by foot, so I hauled myself to it in pouring rain. Luckily I wore workout clothes and tennis shoes that day, but my raincoat was water resistant, not waterproof, so I got pretty soaked. I still arrived a few minutes early, and the staff let me take some napkins to dry myself off. The class was at the bar in the back of this flagship location. It was set up for two, but I was the only person who showed. Jayanna led me through a very detailed class, provided handouts and a soba tea cookie along with water, and answered a ton of questions I had. As a daily matcha maker, I knew I had a lot to learn. She showed me how to care for the different tools used to make matcha. We made three preparations: sparkling matcha, shaken matcha, and matcha latte. We went through each with various steps and measurements. She demonstrated what to do and then I would make the drinks for both of us. It was a very fun experience and I learned a lot. I also got to shop after the class with a 15% discount, so I got myself a custom single cultivar matcha called okuju made exclusively for Kettl and especially for lattes, and then some individually wrapped fancy tea bags of matcha genmai and hojicha for Eric when he travels. The class had an hour and a half of instruction and I spent a half hour asking about products and shopping. It is a very nice space and I would love to try some of the unique drinks on the menu plus take more classes. If you love matcha and learning, I recommend taking a class here or at the LA location if you are on the west coast!

Walk in and order at the counter, they have menu of Vietnamese-and-Asian-inspired coffee and tea drinks, I've been seeing them posted everywhere and have been wanting to try everything! Notably they're most well known for their pandan latte (both espresso and matcha versions), though I'm also curious to try their black sesame latte, black matcha with ginger, jasmine matcha with pandan, calamansi latte, and Phin honey oat latte (or PHO lol). For those not familiar with pandan it's a fragrant leaf that imparts a light florally flavor and scent. It's particularly used in Southeast Asian desserts and what I predict will be the next new trend as Vietnamese coffee culture influences start popping up stateside. I got the pandan matcha $6.55 + $0.90 for oatmilk, and the pandan honeycomb cake $6.95, another staple they're known for. The pandan matcha was FIRE. Perfection in a cup to me, I've been on the hunt for pandan drinks now that they're starting to trend in NYC and I'm 100% here for Le Phin's version. The amount of pandan flavor and sweetness (not too sweet) balanced with the grass light bitterness of the matcha was what I was hoping for. Their honeycomb cake was bouncy, chewy and delicious with plenty of pandan flavor as well. A little on the sweeter side for me though no complaints other than the price felt a little high though I get inflation and it's really quite a novelty item.
