While you won't be able to take your Hurricane to the streets in a neon plastic cup, Ninth Ward is a more-than-respectable substitute for a New Orleans watering hole in the heart of the East Village, New York. And it's quickly becoming one of my favorite bars in the city. Their drink selection includes numerous Abita brands (both on draught and in bottles), a handful of New Orleans specialties (such as the aforementioned Hurricane), twists on Southern staples (case-in-point, the Laura Palmer, named after Arnie's illegitimate daughter, which uses Sweet Tea Infused Firefly Vodka), seven brands of absinthe (yes, seven), and finally, the now-infamous Charlie Sheen cocktail, which is literally just Cat Daddy Carolina Moonshine and Coke (the soda variety, not the real Charlie Sheen stuff). Don't think Mardi Gras when you come in here, however. Don't think daylight, bright colors, costumes, beads, titty-balls, none of that. Think more along the lines of a shelter from the storm - where you're holed up in this joint, waitin' for the weather to pass - well, might as well drink up! It's dark and cozy, most of the light from dim bulbs or the toasty fireplace. The interior gives off the illusion you're in the belly of The Black Rock, with its wood-beamed structure, nautical artwork, and faux-figurehead behind the bar. And while the punk rock music selection may not be New Orleans jazz, it's just grimy enough to tie it all together. Lastly, the three bathrooms at Ninth Ward are labeled "Sex", "Drugs", and "Rock and Roll". I chose the last one by default since the other two were occupied. Whether said activities were being carried out beyond their respective door signs remains undetermined. But the devil inside me likes to imagine they were.

I was anticipating The Ninth Ward to be more of a restaurant and less of a bar, but it was the opposite. The decor and ambience are an alluring representation of the southern mystique of the city and life on the bayou. I was charmed by it. The food, however very good, was not the decadent and indulgent cuisine of NOLA, but a scaled down bar food version. Again - the food was very tasty and not too over priced. I'd definitely eat here again. Unfortunately, there was no table service, and orders had to be placed with the bartender but food was brought to the table by servers and servers did clear plates and glasses. As any good NOLA establishment should have - The Ninth Ward has Abita on tap. It also offers NOLA themed cocktails that were good but overpriced. I had 2 Marie Laveaus and they were inconsistently created by the same bartender. One may have had orange juice instead of grapefruit juice. The one that followed the recipe was excellent though. One more note, the crowd was loud for a Wednesday night and it seemed like mostly college kids. I look forward to visiting again and seeing the outdoor area.

Cool place for celebrating with friends. The drinks are good. I got guac and chips. The vibe is nice and our bartender looked like a herb farmer but I loved it. I had a good night and my friends enjoyed their birthdays. We were able to spread out all over, from the garden to the front veranda. Reasonably priced and quick service.

(Deep sigh) . . . The sigh is because this place is actually a beautiful space and my first (and possibly last) meal there was excellent. However, my two-star rating is in large-part attributed to my overall experience there and despite the ambiance and the food quality, I left not feeling like I had a great customer service experience. A friend of mine invited me to a "talk" that was being hosted by a colleague of his and was being held at the restaurant. When I walked up to the entrance of the restaurant, I was greeted gruffly by a gentleman who only said, "ID". I was a little taken aback as I'd expect a curt greeting like that at a club or bar, but I thought this was a restaurant. Mind you the guy wasn't rude but a "hello" or "good evening" definitely would have been preferred over the one I received. The inside of the restaurant was nice but the gem, for me, was the beautiful back patio which has a fountain in it. It felt like being in a southern Italian village, I loved it. Was eventually shown to a table in the back that would sit 10-12 folks. It was Happy-hour so they had several beers 2 for 1 until 8:00 when their Happy-hour ended. I ended up ordering a Chimay ($10). They give you a wooden token for your second drink which you give to them when you're ready for it. I ordered the 'Slap Ya Mamma' (Really not a fan of this name at all) Buffalo Wings which are cooked in a special sauce and served with house bleu. They are offered in two prices depending on your desired portions ($9.00 or $17.00). I got the $17 portion size. Wings are pretty hard to mess up as far as comfort food goes, but they're even harder to master. These wings were mastered! These were some of the best tasting wings I've had ever! Whatever is in the special sauce, is definitely that, special! They were well cooked and had a New Orleans flare that was more memorable than any wings I can remember talking about. I'm telling you, these wings were phenomenal! That being said, it was my later experience which warranted me giving Ninth Ward a two-star rating. After finishing the meal, I ordered a glass of white wine. When the waitress was placing the glass on the table, she proceeded to accidentally knock the glass over and it rolled off of the table shattering on the ground. There was wine spilled on my pants (which will have to be dry-cleaned) as well as on my shoes and bag that was next to my chair. She apologized and I came away with no glass in my eye so I thought I came out pretty good as far as possible scenarios went. She was nice enough, absent the spilling of the wine, but the drinks had been brought out rather slowly. When the bill came she offered me one of the Happy-hour coins mentioned above entitling me to a free beer if I were to ever come back to the establishment. In addition, I was one of two people, who actually ordered food (everyone else was just drinking) and she added in an automatic gratuity to my bill because it was a party larger than 6. My problem was that, in lieu of her spilling wine on my clothes and shoes, the proper thing to do would have been to either comp or offer to comp the drink as our table's engagement was interrupted due to the mistake. We had to stop, make sure myself and the person next to me, didn't have broken glass anywhere on us, etc. I get that people make mistakes, but how you address them is also important. A token for a beer is not a great remedy for having wine spilled on me (and the person sitting next to me) and the interruption of our table's dialogue. Although I was disappointed with my overall customer service experience at Ninth Ward, I still think it has a beautiful backyard space and the wings were some of the tastiest I've had. The wings are the only reason I didn't give a 1-star rating. Wish I could have given a better rating but the service experience was not satisfactory. Hopefully this can be regarded as positive feedback for the restaurant moving forward.

Ambiance: This place has a nice ambiance, definitely very "New York" -- dark (you can't see how dirty the floor is) and loud music (maybe too loud). We sat upstairs (we had a reservation) and of all the people on the top there was a party of 4 (us), a party of 8 (all dudes celebrating something) and the rest of the tables were on a DATE - which I thought was funny. Service: We were served by Ann-Marie who was so delightful. She was kind, super nice, and took the time to speak to us (which is basically how we figured out she wasn't a native New York City person). She gave us good food suggestions and we were very happy with our selection. Food: Here is what we ordered * Steak Frites: My two boys got the steak frites and I have to say the steak was awesome! I had a bite of each of theirs and they each ordered it differently (one Medium Rare/Medium and one Medium) and they both were prepared PERFECTLY. The fries were overflowing. * Caeser Salad with Salmon: My wife got the salad with Salmon (they only have a few salad options) and she enjoyed it. * Prawn and Crab Risotto: I got this and I have to say it was VERY bland. I wouldn't get this if you are looking for taste. I had to put salt and pepper on it to make it have any semblance of taste. Value/Price: I would say this is not over priced but it is not cheap either...bill is attached. I would recommend it to folks who are looking for a good place to either go out on a date or a family type meal.

The bi-level bar and lounge was dark, swanky, and seductive. It would make an excellent spot for dates or groups of friends, like mine. We started off sitting at the bar, as there were no large tables available upon our arrival. However, after about 15 minutes, the host approached to tell us that he could actually seat us. I picked up my glass, which was wet with condensation, and it slipped out of my hands. I was able to collect it with only a minor spill, but the host insisted that the bar staff make me a new cocktail in case the glass had chipped at all. It was a considerate gesture that I greatly appreciated. Plus, since I had already taken a few sips, I was thrilled to get those back in a new glass! In terms of my cocktail of choice, I had opted for the Hot Tijuana Tease, a fiery blend of mezcal, blanco tequila, chile poblano liqueur, and lime juice. So, it was essentially a spicy margarita, and it was excellent. There were clean, crisp notes of peppery heat balanced with layers of robust smoke. My only complaint about the lounge was that the bathrooms were beyond tiny. There were two unisex stalls in a very tight alcove that also included a cramped sink counter. It was awkward and uncomfortable to share that space with another patron. Aside from that, the Hide Rooftop was a beautiful place with a friendly staff and interesting drinks.
