From service to drinks to food, this place is phenomenal. We went for the first time two nights ago while my mother was visiting, but then turned around and visited again the following night. We tried cocktails made with mezcal, whiskey and gin and all were delicious, but the standout was the West Egg made with lavendar, gin, lemon and egg white. It was light and summery and wonderful. We also had several small plates over the two visits: hamachi, hot and soft centered pretzel rolls, a delicious heirloom tomato and mozzarella plate, Brussel sprouts and kimchi fries. I wanted to like this place because the drinks are strong and well made. However the vibe is just lacking and too boring to come here on a weekend. You could here a pin drop in the bar area on a Friday night and the air was thick as pudding. Poorly dressed, Dallas people everywhere driving entry level Beemers. Went for brunch sunday morning. Brunch food was delicious (I have also been for dinner and the dinner food is excellent as well). The host and servers were all extremely friendly and helpful. My favorite part is that the bar tenders make a point to remember your name the entire time you sit there and address you accordingly. The house that was converted is adorable and the setup was great for the party of 5 that I went in with. The staff was incredibly friendly and willing to talk about their favorites on the menu. The jalapeno cocktail was just the right amount of spicy, do recommend. The pretzel bun was tasty. We tried five different entrees and they were all well made and presented. The chicken was moist, well-seasoned and all together delicious, something that doesn't happen every often for chicken dishes (and those potatos dauphine were perfect). The beet dish was AMAZING, easily the most elegant presentation of the night. As for dessert, the chocolate cake was a brand new addition and was rich and moist. I did brunch here last Sunday with several ladies. The location is absolutely adorable, beautiful bold colors and striking fixtures. The staff was super sweet and we were seated promptly. The food was great and the drinks were delicious! I had the bloody mary which was just the right amount of spice for me. The dishes were smaller, but were the perfect brunch size, in my mind. My girlfriend and I tried to go to Bar Peached next door but they wouldn't seat us due to reserved tables. It was 5:40pm and we were trying to catch happy hour, but didn't know if Nightcap had one, so we went in just to check. I am so happy we did! It's a cozy, dimly-lit spot with great, attentive staff, delicious (and strong!) drinks, and mouth-watering food! The happy hour was so great, too! It runs until 7pm, which is later than most Austin happy hours, and all the signature cocktails were half off and so were all the appetizers. We got the homemade pretzel bread, which was to die for, the crispy brussels, shishito peppers, and the cheese plate. I wasn't crazy for the peppers but everything was drool worthy! The drinks are creative. We got three different kinds and my favorite was the "Ghost 'Em Girl," which has Ghost peppers and jalapeno but has a sweet heat that doesn't linger. I was worried it would be too spicy but it was perfect. For all the food and drinks we got, we couldn't have asked for a better price, too. I can't wait to go back to Nightcap! read more

She had gone back to the kitchen and chatted with her chef and tried the rolls and agreed things just were off that evening and that this was a huge bummer. This adorable dinner spot on west sixth street perfectly captures the spirit and essence of Austin with amazing dishes - all modifiable to accommodate specific diets and dietary restrictions, friendly faces and a warm, cozy atmosphere complete with hardwood floors, original wallpaper and even a cute little backyard! I had the pleasure of partaking in a four course meal that was perfectly curated by chefs Drew and Adam. I started the meal with an apertif of mezcal, orange bitters and lillet rose in the Vanna Blanco. First course was hamachi with puffed sorghum, lemon puree and ponzu sauce. The second course was deliciously charred broccoli with Parmesan crisps, broccoli puree, burnt lemon and Parmesan foam! For the main course I had seared Atlantic Salmon with roasted russet potatoes, horseradish olive oil puree and crispy sunchoke. Finally for dessert I got a sneak preview of a new twist on the classic "Ants on a log" with celery sorbet, peanut butter panna cotta, peanuts, dehydrated celery and last but not least, real dehydrated black ants!!! And I finished the evening with a warm, citrusy "coffee and cigarettes" cocktail with coffee liqueur, mezcal, tobacco smoke rub and orange oil. Everything was so beautifully presented and each flavor complemented the next impeccably! You absolutely have to try that Parmesan foam! Complimentary valet, inviting atmosphere and unbelievably good food are just some of the many reasons to try Nightcap! If you're lucky you can catch owner Christin who is extremely friendly and just as passionate about the food as the restaurant itself - and it shows in the level of detail displayed from the coat racks in the entrance to the old hardcover books they use as check presenters! There were ten of us, and when we arrived our table wasn't quite ready (not that we cared because we were chatting and admiring the decor) but they brought us all a glass of champagne on the house for waiting. When I arrived they said we could eat on couches (very uncomfortable for dinner since it has a coffee table) or that we could have a picnic table if we would be done before the next party. That was a little strange but we weren't planning on staying all night so it was fine, but don't accept reservations if you can't accommodate them correctly. Small plates, high prices. I liked their cheese plate, but was disappointed that there was only one kind of cheese, and also by the food-to-money ratio. The ambiance is dark and intimate, and it looks like a nice place to chill, but ultimately it's more restaurant than bar and seemed a uptight and a bit snobby which is really what gives it 2 stars for me. I don't think I'll be back, even though it really does have nice drinks. If you have enough money to not worry about prices maybe it would be worth it! Wow!! For a place that specializes in desserts and late night cocktails...underwhelmed. It was my second time there. 1st time, just OK. 2nd time...blah. They had literally 6 items on dessert menu, only 2 of which were sweet, there rest were sort of "savory" I guess. We had the chocolate sponge cake. The presentation was dreadful. It was such a small serving in a huge bowl. I literally thought we were on a hidden camera show. The "cake" was ( I'm not exaggerating here) 3 small teaspoon size pieces. They looked exactly like what you would scrape off the side of a brownie pan. Then there were 2 rock hard thin dark chocolate wafers...think Oreo, but 1000 times harder like a brick and irregularly shaped like broken glass. You needed a hammer to break them. There was some sort of frozen sorbet which was tasty (like a salty caramel, but not that good). Finally there were 2 "pieces" of chocolate ganache. Now, ganache is supposed to be rich and creamy and soft. This was (again no exaggeration) 2 small about nickel sized hard as rock chunks. Super hard. Overall, this place has a great location, it is in a cool old house on W 6th....but if you're going to call yourself Nightcap and "specialize" in desserts and cocktails...atleast make your desserts edible. And, have better selection. Gross. Will NOT be back. And for the record, read my reviews. I don't leave many, and they are honest. In addition, I'm not an Austin transplant... I've been here 15 years, I know Austin, I know almost every restaurant in town and I know good food. Unfortunately, as much as I want to like this place (good idea, good location), I just can't. read more
