Based on my estimates of the time the job would take, they were much cheaper than any of the 5 other companies we got quotes from. In the end though, the job did take longer than expected. They used three employees and a large truck. They provided blankets, plastic wrap, and tape to properly protect all items for transport. If they noticed any preexisting damage on the furniture, they notified us promptly so we were aware. Initially, they worked quite efficiently, but began to slow down during the second half of pick-up. What I thought would take about 4 hours ended up being a 6 hour job, including a 45 minute drive to the new place. They still came in cheaper than the next best quote we were considering, but not by much. When they finished the move, they left a mountain of tape, plastic, and cardboard, which they supplied, in our hallway. We thought they would clean it up before leaving, but we were left with that task, which was disappointing. They require a $50 + tax deposit to reserve a move. You pay the balance after all the work is done. They offer a discount if you pay in cash. Overall, they were professional and moving is grueling work so I have no major complaints, other than the debris they left behind. But be mindful that the time-based quote may add up, so be prepared to spend more than you might anticipate.

Fantastic crew of 4 led by the highly capable Matthias was prompt, diligent and professional. They handled everything with aplomb and style. Not a small move by any stretch, and with a number of big items (King Mattress, oversize wood mirror and some furniture) - everything was packed and unpacked with care. I price-compared a ton of NYC moving companies and J & G gave me a competitive moving quote. Additionally, the building I was moving into required a certificate of insurance (COI) and J & G was able to offer it for me for free. A lot of other companies charge for this. Before moving, I communicated with them via email and they always responded promptly and were very clear about what their moving package included. The day of the move, they called and asked if it was okay if they came an hour early. They were very communicative with me during the whole move. The lead guy (forgot his name!) assessed how many things I had and then discussed with the other 2 men on how to efficiently approach the move. The 3 men were over 6' tall and strong, and they were able to finish my whole move in a little more than 1 hr! I did not have anything that was easily breakable but the men treated my things with care. They provided blanket and shrink wrapping for all of my furniture. Everything was loaded up into their truck very quickly. These guys wasted no time. When I arrived at my new apartment building, they had already started unloading my things. I had my boxes labeled with what was inside (i.e., kitchen supplies, shoes, jackets) and they actually placed each box in the corresponding room. Best of all, there were no hidden fees. They ended up not charging me a processing fee that was included in the quote and gave me $40 off my quoted price. The movers were so friendly, communicative and professional, I will definitely be using J & G Moving again! I also wanted to note that on the day of my move, the street I was moving from was blocked due to construction. J & G movers did not complain or make any mention of that until I had stepped outside of my apartment building and noticed it. These guys provide excellent customer service and I was very impressed by them.

They attempted to steal my money, after sending only…read moretwo movers and then claiming I had more items than I shared, which was untrue, they demanded I pay the full balance before starting the job (a process that is totally unlike any other moving company I have used). Nevertheless, I paid. And, once I paid they turned around left. Needless to say, I refused to be scammed, recorded them and called the police who assisted me in verifying they voided the payment. Go elsewhere.

However, the service and experience provided was the total opposite. It was unacceptable and negligent. The movers carelessly handled our belongings. From the moment they stepped in the door, one of the movers made a snide remark. We always expect courteous and respectful conduct. And that was not the case. They broke the blinds, damaged/chipped the wood on our furniture, lost our sofa pillows, they stuffed our belongings carelessly in a bag, our clothes were on the floor and they did not care to pick them up until I brought it to their attention. They discarded the tape rolls around the apartment as if it was a waste disposal basket. They put our sofas back as a toddler would put a toy back together. And honestly a toddler would had done a better job. The movers were negligent and extremely unprofessional. They took cigarette breaks lengthening the moving process and transferring the smell inside the space and around our belongings. One of the crew members was extremely rude and arrogant. He took our tree and banged it against the door when moving it out. Slammed the roll of black bags on the floor. He could have care less for the job he was performing. Because we paid for professional, white-glove service, we expect items to be handled with extreme care. The carelessness of the staff has resulted in leaving us with a very sour experience and it was totally the opposite of what was denoted to us in our initial conversation and in the reviews. I will never recommend their services to anyone, not even to my worse enemy. To anyone thinking of hiring this company do not go by the reviews as we did. Do your research! Be warned!

Absolutely outstanding experience with Big John's. They came highly recommended by a friend (with…read morehigh standards) who had used them for four previous moves, and they completely lived up to the recommendation. We moved this summer from a three-bedroom apartment to a five-story townhouse with no elevator, and they made what could have been an incredibly stressful move with three kids feel completely manageable. They're a wonderfully old-school company with traditional administration (payment is by certified check), and from the start they were professional, thorough and straightforward. An estimator came out in person before quoting us, which I really appreciated, and the price was very reasonable. The packing team came the day before and was careful, organized and courteous throughout. On move day, a thunderstorm hit just as they were unloading. The crew was soaked through while carrying furniture and boxes up 60 steps to the fifth floor, yet there wasn't a single complaint or grumble. They stayed upbeat, focused and on task, and took every precaution to protect both our belongings and our newly finished floors. I was genuinely amazed by their professionalism, care and sheer endurance in such difficult moving conditions. The biggest surprise was that our final bill actually came in lower than the estimate. That level of honesty and integrity really stood out and perfectly reflected our experience with them from beginning to end. We're already using Big John's again to bring the rest of our belongings out of storage in Connecticut. Truly excellent service from start to finish - if it's not already obvious, I couldn't recommend them more highly!
