Urban Flat Rate Saved My Move -- Even on Labor Day! I cannot thank Bill and his team at Urban Flat Rate enough for rescuing me from a moving nightmare. On Sunday, August 31st, a well-known moving company started my one-bedroom move from Manhattan to New Jersey. About 90 minutes in, their office called, claiming I had severely (but unintentionally) underestimated my item count -- and they doubled my fee on the spot, saying the higher rate was also because it was the last day of the month. They demanded immediate payment over the phone, or they would only move what was covered in the original quote, which they did -- and sure enough, they left several packed boxes behind. It felt like extortion. That was the end of Part 1 of my move, and now the conclusion. Thankfully, my old storage company gave me Urban Flat Rate's number. Bill immediately picked up the phone (it was a Sunday!) and said he might be able to move me the next afternoon -- on Labor Day. After thinking it over, I texted him back requesting he see my apartment and provide a quote. Bill arrived around 1pm on Monday with Leo, an expert packer, and gave me a fair, transparent quote -- no holiday surcharge -- and within 30 minutes of accepting the quote, Bill had a full team packing, loading, and moving my remaining belongings. By 8:30 PM, I was completely moved in to my new apartment! Whew! Without Urban Flat Rate, I could have missed my lease deadline and risked losing my security deposit. Bill and his crew were professional, fast, and incredibly accommodating -- and I'm also grateful to my new property manager, who even reserved the freight elevator for us on a holiday. I found Bill and Urban Flat Rate online. I was drawn to them by the predominantly positive reviews. Yes, I also read the negative ones as well, but being a business owner myself and someone who strives to provide excellent customer service, I too have managed to get a few negative reviews, as some people just cant be pleased. Nonetheless, I made the booking with Bill and gave him my itemized list and sent the photos of the items to be moved. I did not realize that the date I had booked was Christmas Eve and when the date arrived, I realized it was Christmas Eve. It was also severly cold day and I was worried , Bill and his team might flake on me. But true to his word, Bill and his crew of 3 men showed up on time. They had the needed dollies and blankets the whole shebang. Of course, from the time of booking to actual ove date, my itemized list of things to move had changed. Bill was more than flexible to accomodate some last minites additions and subtractions. Bill may first appear tough (he has to! He's had his share of customers under-declaring and then adding more stuff. So try and get ur list of things to move as accurate as possible. Also, he goes by the written list you give. The photos he will ask you for are just for visualization purposes. So dont rely on photos to tell Bill what you want moved. Make the written list accurate.) We finished the move in one day, without any damage to the items or property and Bill and his crew were polite qnd professional throughtout. I found myself panicked this past summer because I had to find a company to move my belongings from my extremely overpriced storage space in Chelsea to a friend's garage in Westchester, but with a very limited budget. Another very good friend of mine, John, had used Bill's team to move his daughter's belongings from New York to Boston and he raved about the service and the cost. Me being the skeptic, I worked out a budget in my head along with planning out all of the nightmare scenarios of things that could go wrong. The next day, I called Bill and asked him to give me a quote based on the quantity of items and the location of the to/from move. I was floored by the rate that Bill gave me, considering the move was an hour out of the city. We agreed on a date and time and I informed the storage facility that I was vacating, after 14 years and about roughly $40K of cash that I mindlessly shelled out (again, the space had reached mortgage level amounts from the start of under $90). We were unable to move everything on the day planned because the storage facility closed early, but Bill agreed to have his guys come back for the balance of the items at no additional cost, which was a pleasant surprise. This is THE WORST moving company. I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy. They were supposed to move me on a Friday and gave me a window that they would be at my place between Noon - 2pm. At 145pm I called them and they said they wouldn't make it until 3pm. Because of that I had to reschedule to 830am the next Tuesday morning. They didn't arrive until 945a that morning, then when it was time to transport, he told me he had to make another stop to pick someone else up first before they would get to me. At this point I am completely pissed off but of course my stuff is loaded on their truck so we go through with it. When they arrive, unpack and are ready to leave, they had no change and demanded that I somehow come up with the change or they were going to take my stuff back. The main guy, Bill, then proceeded to attempt to take my TV back outside of my apartment because he couldn't produce $2 in change. Mind you, he already had the $280 that I paid him in his hand. It almost got physical until his partner said he would get the change and told Bill to leave. They don't even deserve one star. I should honestly be refunded the $280 I paid you based on this completely UNACCEPTABLE behavior. I'm only giving one star because I have to in order to post my review. read more

I've moved 3 times now with Urban Flat Rate! Bill has been so straightforward, timely, efficient, and considerate each time. I know that I can always count on them to give me a reasonable rate and be super on time. They respond to requests quickly and scheduling is so easy and thorough. They're always punctual on moving day. They are very careful and considerate of each item and piece of furniture, and they make it look so easy! Each time I've had stairs and small hallways for them to deal with, and it has never been a problem. When I moved this month, I had an old secretary desk that was a fragile piece of furniture, and they were so careful with wrapping it and moving it up 2 flights of stairs and into the right room, and even helped to set it up right. All of my belongings are safely brought into the new place, and I really feel comfortable putting my things in their care! I have used Urban Flat Rate for moving TWO TIMES within the past month(long story), so that should give you some idea of the level of confidence I have in them and how I was pleased with their service. They are both efficient and effective. The price quote really doesn't change. For my first move, I had no furniture and even still I was getting obscenely high quotes from other companies. So, at first, I went with them because of receiving a quote I was comfortable paying (seriously, I was considering conning friends into a "road trip" and renting a car to move me a mile the first time). The second time, I did have some furniture, but the rate was still far lower than what I was quoted by other companies the first move. They are super responsive on Yelp, received replies within an hour or two on average, and were able to move me last minute to my new place. They are cash or PayPal only, just as a heads up. read more

I had the best experience imaginable with Urban Flat Rate. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Yes they are by far the lowest cost (I spoke with several other firms) and very competent, experienced movers who know what they're doing. They can wrap your furniture and figure out how to transport unwieldy items. As important, they are extremely accommodating -- moving is full of snags and uncertainties and you want to be working with someone like Bill and his team who are going to help solve your problems. Our storage facility misinformed us about access hours and Bill kept our belongings on his truck overnight and delivered them first thing the next morning. He could have left us stranded on the sidewalk and charged us for the delay but that would never have crossed his mind. I will definitely use them again when we move our stuff out of storage. They were prompt, polite, respectful, and efficient. Every single thing I owned was cared for - not so much as a glass was broken or lost! The crew was incredibly professional and reliable. The best part was their price was several hundred dollars less than any of the other ten+ quotes I got, and they stuck to it. They gave me a window of time and then ensured they stuck to it (I fully expected to be paying extra for movers intentionally slowing the process down- i was so relieved that this was NOT the case!) My wife and I recently hired Urban Flat Rate for our Manhattan apartment move and Bill and his team did a phenomenal job at a very fair rate. We had used his services prior to pick up a king size bed and his team arrived in a very timely fashion (within 5 minutes of the start of the window provided) and completed the work quickly and effectively. With that in mind, we opted to have Urban Flat Rate conduct the move for our whole apartment at the end of May. They were very careful with all of our valuables, conducted themselves professionally and patiently throughout, and, leading up to the move, Bill was very responsive. Urban Flat Rate was available within hours of me calling. I had called around to a number of moving services from Craigslist because I needed a couple pieces moved last minute. Several companies were rude, hard to understand and unreliable, but these guys communicated clearly, gave me a fair price and arrived as scheduled just a couple hours after I first spoke with them. They were careful with my stuff, very pleasant to work with and I would absolutely recommend them to anyone else moving whether it be a big or small project. Wish I had known about them sooner as I think I could have saved myself a lot of money and grief if I had enlisted them to do my whole move rather than just the few items leftover at the end. I hired someone on Craigslist and after confirming with them, they never showed. I called Urban Flat Rate, and they saved the day and were at my apartment in 20 minutes. They were super fast! A few days later, the night before the big move, I realized I needed more help. Left a message the night before, and they confirmed and arrived the next morning. Both times they didn't miss a beat. They were friendly, swift, and packed 2 SUVs super efficiently. Made unpacking that much easier. I have already recommended them to friends. I have never written a Yelp review, but I had to share. This time around I had an immediate family emergency and needed our things from one destination to the next and I was able to once again speak to Bill, which made me feel secure in knowing that he and his team were able to take care of myself and my family.
