I continue to be very happy with the excellence of Big John's Moving. I recently moved more than 100 miles. They made a potentially complicated and messy move--with two pick-up locations prior to the final destination--seamless. It constantly amazes me how these strong guys can lift and navigate massive furniture--yet the same guys also delicately pack china and glassware. I had more than 150 boxes and there was not one broken item. Not one lost item. I trust them 100%. As far as the back story, since it had been several years since I moved, I decided to get more than one estimate. I knew I would have Big John's come over to provide an estimate, but some review-searching led me to some new players in moving. One of them had almost all 5-star reviews, which in retrospect is hard for anyone to pull off. Big John's came in and gave me an estimate and told me it would be a 2-day move. I then had the second moving company (the one with almost all 5-star reviews) come over. Their estimate was nearly half the cost of Big John's and they said they would do it in 1 day and with only 3 workers. I have had at least 4 or 5 people move me for years. Oftentimes it is 6 or 7 people. I mentioned this to the moving company representative more than once. I even said "I don't mind paying extra for another person." That is the truth. I would rather pay more and have an efficient and good move as opposed to a situation where the movers get exhausted halfway through the day. He told me their philosophy is that "any more than 3 people bump into each other." I have never witnessed movers bumping into each other before and I was skeptical. (It is clear to me now that their revenue model depends on having as few people as possible perform the moving job.) But I was blinded by the low estimate so I verbally agreed to hire them. When I told Big John's I was not using them, they called me back right away and were very professional but wanted to know why. I told them what I had been told by the second mover and Big john's said "you have really nice stuff, you know how careful we are." True. He also told me about some potential problems they could encounter on the road insofar as trucking laws. I also thought to myself that I did not want to be in a situation where three guys from the new moving company were coming to my place at 8am and unloading the truck at my new place at 11pm. That was a very real possibility. That was enough. I came to my senses and I hired Big John's. I later realized that the second mover was a very good salesperson--he had lots of emotional intelligence and came across as warm and caring and said all the right things--but there were far too many things that could go wrong. I reviewed the various email and texts and paper estimate and saw there were a lot of gray areas and contradictions in what I was being promised. After I cancelled with the second mover (almost three weeks before the actual move date) he started to show his true colors: he began calling, texting and emailing me repeatedly over several days. Managing his drama significantly added to my pre-move stress. I wish he had just bowed out gracefully. Instead, he was telling me about all the extra people he would bring in to move me (so much for his "3 people" philosophy) and how he would do the move "in 2 days, too," If I wanted. He would not let go of it. He kept behaving as if I had not cancelled. Even after I emailed him to re-state that I was cancelling, he kept going. He seemed perplexed that I would want to pay more for another mover. He never grasped the concept that I would be paying more for more...more services and for a company I have used a half a dozen time in the past. Not to mention a company that treats its workers well and does not expect them to work 12-14 hour days. On the day of the move, I was happy to see two guys I had used in the past, including the foreman. I really like the way Big John's has clear delineations of roles: there is a chief/foreman (who knows how to manage people), there are the guys who move the boxes, the guys who are great packers, the guys who wrap furniture, the guys who handle the tricky stuff (like my grandfather clock), the guy who tracks all / keeps inventory, and the guy who arranges and rearranges the truck as needed. This is why they don't "bump into each other." I see no reason for me to ever not use Big John's again. I mentioned this in my older review, but it is a rare thing when I enjoy paying a bill. But moving is so important and Big John's is so good, they make it worth it! read more

Moving from Brooklyn to NC, we contacted a bunch of moving companies to get quotes. Big John's was the only company that sent someone out to give us an in person estimate. The estimate was very professional and they honestly seemed too nice for our budget. When they sent over the quote, we were pleasantly surprised with how affordable they were. When moving day came, they were very professional, tidy, and quick. Despite a snowstorm hitting NYC, they were able to hit their initial delivery date and delivery was just as easy and professional as pickup. I urge you to heed my words, borne of a recent experience. almost 2 months since my move, I am still assessing the range and cost of my possessions that this mover stole or lost. So far, and this is a truncated list, we are talking about an entire collection, service for eight, of designer swirl patterned silver plated tableware, expensive professional-grade knives, every single kitchen and cooking utensil (dozens of them), blankets that I cherished including a new Pioneer Woman plush blanket and a navy and white blanket that I had since freshman year of college almost 50 years ago. I am especially mourning this. Gone. A carton of irreplaceable childhood mementos. Gone. Holiday decorations. Gone. A trove of household cleaners and supplies. Gone. Bath towels. Gone. To rub salt into my many wounds, Big John's refuses to send me claim forms. Now I can't even submit these losses to my insurance company or to small claims court. Apparently the only thing left to me to put these outlaws in their place is to spread the word online. read more

Let me start off by saying that from the call to the move, I experienced nothing short of exceptional service. Everyone was friendly, loved the company they work for, were accommodating and refreshingly professional. Martin and Louis were the gentlemen that packed my furniture. They were fast but made sure to care for each item. I was in an old elevator building and just a few minutes before they walked into the building all the power went out, including the elevator. Of course! These guys got all my thing from the 5th floor, down winding stairs to the truck in no time. Fortunately, the power came back on just in time for the last, but heaviest piece of furniture that had to be removed. They were so fun and friendly, it felt as though we were old friends or family. I can't comment on the actual experience of using them but the prices they quoted me were simply outrageous. And I don't mind spending money when it's warranted but this was unbelievable. I requested a quote on our move and they promptly sent someone to assess the situation. I wish they'd given me an eyeball estimate before sending someone over so I wouldn't be an hour late to work waiting for this guy. The quote they gave me was around ~ 4100$ to move a 2 br apartment from Upper East Side to Midtown West not including full packing but semi packing - kitchen, pantry etc. For comparison, I ended up going with another reputable company and paid HALF OF THAT for full packing of the entire apartment and everything was packed and moved neatly and not a single item was broken during move. In short, I'm sure they are amazing, but their prices are simply outrageous and you can find a much better deal elsewhere. Re: The comment from the owner regarding me sharing my experience being a "groundless complaint" is a total BS, and it annoyed me so much, I was bothered enough to go through my email to post a picture for you to see that I am not making up the whole thing and this indeed happened. LONG overdue review. In short: they are the BEST moving company you can hire. Professional, attentive, kind, fast, honest, upfront, and QUALIFIED. They were recommended to me by a whip-smart friend who moved back and forth across the country through her wild 20s (and who is now a mega NYC boss!) and said they were the BEST movers she had ever used... and she would know- she's used ALL of them. I first hired them in 2017 when coordinating a fairly simple cross-city NYC move. BUT I'm crazy, paranoid, and attached to my many possessions. I'm not Marie Kondo, and I don't care... except when I move! I worry about broken/stolen possessions because of bad experiences with former movers, doormen, and weird freelancers. But with Big John's, it was seamless. Everybody was professional, everything arrived in tact and was handled with great precision. They have none of the seedy "negotiation used-car-salesmen" pitches of other companies, nor the "Neanderthal pounding and slamming" qualities of lesser movers. Fast forward to 2020, and my partner and I- who have been combining our large lives for 7 years- moved from NYC to California (yes fires, but yes SPACE AND A YARD) with TONS of stuff. This "stuff" was spread across 5 apartments and 9 storage units... can't make this up. It was not just a move. It was an orchestration- a symphony- a feat of nature! I was paralyzed at first, but then I asked Big John's if their fantastic company could do a cross-country move of this scope, and they said YES! With their own team and trucks. Full disclosure: they aren't cheap. If you're on a budget and don't prioritize quality, they aren't for you. But for me, their costs are fair and reflective of quality, and SOOOO worth the piece of mind. I can't begin to explain how different they are from other movers. They're coordinated, LOGICAL, attentive, caring, fast, efficient, and concerned with customer needs. It's terrifying for me to hand over my space and belongings to others (both times, I hired them to both PACK and move), but they always made sure I felt comfortable. Packing, Pre-Move: Oddly, it was... fun. Ed was constantly on call, texting me at all hours and reassuring me. Not in a fake way. He was honest, but also listened/responded to my concerns. We created a color-coded system for where stuff was coming FROM and going TO. I was scared and assumed this move would be the worst month of my life (moving during a PANDEMIC?!) and every day, there were between 4-11 guys (again, can't make this up) packing our stuff while I dashed around, encouraging proper mask usage and OCD labeling techniques. I'm a neurotic wreck and I was ALSO scared I would drop dead of Covid while surrounded by 11 movers! BUT everyone listened and wore medical masks. We even had fun taking forehead temperatures (okay, "fun" might be a stretch, but they were willing). Ed was great with coordinating the team so that everybody had a specialty (i.e. which guys were better at leadership/organization, which were attentive to detail with clothing, itemization, etc, which guys were good at wrapping high-end furniture and fragile objects). The transportation/move itself: I was nervous about timing. We moved Oct 2, and I worried we'd get our stuff mid-December. I was paranoid that stuff would get destroyed in a hot truck cross-country. I was nervous they'd stop in Las Vegas to party and everybody would get Covid and die, and our stuff would be robbed due to an unattended truck, and then would explode due to global warming, etc. (Did I mention I'm crazy?) The estimation for travel from Ed was 2 weeks. He called in 5 DAYS and said to expect them at the new house in 24 hours... UNDER TIME, UNDER BUDGET. Can you believe it? Move in: Oddly relaxing, and aside from cracked glass in ONE picture frame, NOTHING was broken, ruined, or lost (I'll repeat: 5 apartments. 9 storage units. I'm writing this 3 months post-move because we only just finished unpacking the last box!) Because of the scope of our move, Big John's went above and beyond and had Maria, their VP, fly out to help. DEFINITELY not necessary for everyone, but she was sweet, pragmatic, and on top of it. And frankly, I loved having another female helping with weird girl things like dresses not wrinkling and leather/suede not decomposing in humid boxes. Again, I thought this would be the worst month of my life, but it was actually FUN, which is what a move should be. Exciting new beginnings, etc. The guys from the amazing crew were professional and kind. They genuinely wanted to do a good job, and they did. They were also extremely mask-compliant in LA heat, which speaks volumes. Nobody got sick! Everyone lived! Everyone involved will go on to flourish and lead satisfying lives! Spectacular success. They're now forever my go-to moving company, and though we love our new home, we can't wait for post-vaccine bi-coastal living, and we will definitely use Big John's :-) read more

I was COMPLETELY dissatisfied with the home visit estimate. Nick rushed through the apartment and estimate like the apartment was on fire. I had no time for more than 1 question of why it was going to take 2 days for a move from Queens to Albany, 132 miles. I sent an email back to Nick saying his quote of $4500 was way too high, asked some questions and expected a call back from the office. They called around 2 hours later and played dumb. I tried to ask what I could do to lower the way out of range estimate. The salesman tried to say it was the distance, and there was NOTHING that could be done. Not one idea. That quote did not include packing for anything but 5 large pictures. No appliances, one bed. No couches, only one large recliner. One bedroom set and a dining room table. China cabinet and large and heavy entertainment center. Just mentioning the heavy items here. The call back was what I got the most upset at. He had the nerve to say as the moving day came closer they would work on it...What was he thinking. I said forget about it and hung up. I guess Big John does not need business. read more

It's been a year and a half that I have been with Big John's (from first move, into storage and now final move to my new home in Florida) I have to say that I highly recommend them. They were always extremely punctual, cordial, the storage was impeccable and they were all very kind and hard working. All my pieces arrived in perfect condition. We were having our floors replaced so hired Big John's to move out everything, store it and move it back in. Everything seemed to go great. Very efficient and quick in the move. Was impressed since I was paying by the hour. Then I made a dumb, rookie mistake. I signed the final invoice and paid without doing an inventory of everything. They lost a box. I figured, hey things happen and they will be on top of it and find it. It had all of my files from my desk. When I called, I couldn't believe the answer - the driver doesn't remember leaving a box behind. Well no s**t. if he remembered it, he wouldn't have left it behind!!! I was very disappointed in the lack of attention to the matter. They never called back about and I had to call them 2-3 times. They just don't seem to care that they lost something. I signed a form and that seems to be all they care about. They didn't even call the storage facility to try to find it until my second phone call with them, a week after the fact. Poor customer service and responsiveness to issues. Would have gotten 5 stars otherwise, but not caring about a lost item is just unforgivable for a moving company. It's not the fact that something was lost - it happens - but the fact they just don't care. I have worked with this company twice now in the short span of three months. When I moved into my apartment in January, I simply needed help getting my things from the Budget truck into the apartment on the 4th floor; it's damn near impossible for me to move anything heavy up those stairs with my back condition. The first encounter, the office staff and movers were very courteous and easy to direct as any decent movers should be. Today, I unfortunately had to move yet again and I called them to assist. This time, I needed my things transported to Jersey and packed into a portable storage container because I will be moving across country in a week. The office staff, having noticed my recent transaction, gave me a third man to assist without extra charge and discounted my price for supplies (boxes, mattress pad, and furniture pads mostly). To add to their usual friendly service, the guys proved that they are Tetris masters! My U-Pack container was supposed to fit a studio apartment comfortably and instead, we arrived to discover that it must have meant just the furniture from said studio. My things are not that large and I was very concerned that it would not all fit. Given a few minutes to discuss, the movers set to work and got everything to fit into the unit perfectly, including many a piece of awkwardly shaped furniture or box (like a rolling desk chair on top of a bunch of filing totes). I could not be more pleased with this company and I highly recommend them for anyone in need of movers in the UES!! read more

Very honest, professional, and reasonably priced. I was moving furniture from a studio in the UES to Ft Lee, so maybe this is not a big job for Big John's, but the movers were totally professional even with the rainy weather. 2 days earlier, the British lady on the phone quoted me the hourly rate, which I believe is calculated by the presence of an elevator and other factors. We found her to be very friendly and courteous. The movers came on time, packed up fast, made it to the destination at a reasonable hour, unpacked everything and put together a bed in half an hour! My building had crazy penalties for wall scuffs, but after seeing them move another tenant's possessions, I knew my stuff would be in good hands. Plus, I was very impressed that even though it took them only 1/2 an hour to unpack everything, they didn't round up the time to the full hour. They charge a nominal fee for supplies used, ie. rolls of tape and box to protect a chest of drawers. I highly recommend Big John's! read more

Good movers are extremely hard to find, so please take note: I have nothing but praise for Big John's Moving, Inc., and would unhesitatingly and enthusiastically recommend it to anyone seeking a pleasant and professional moving experience. Three men handled our move. All were exceedingly courteous, friendly, and accommodating. They arrived on time and finished early. They moved efficiently, in a calm, well-coordinated manner that is the clear result of good training and solid experience. They competently and carefully moved large and fragile pieces of furniture without any damage whatsoever. The estimates on time were right on the money--no hidden costs or unpleasant surprises. In fact, the only "surprises" were happy ones: the high quality of service we received every step of the way, from the moment we made our (last minute) inquiry about the availability of services to the thoughtful attention and impressive skill with which the move was conducted. Our move was somewhat complex, with some items going to a two-story walk-up in Brooklyn and others delivered to two different sites in rural areas of upstate New York. We have used Big John's Moving four times now ferrying furniture from NYC to Jupiter Florida and back. A few days ago we had the pleasure of having ALEX and COKE (first name, Karl) come to move our stuff permanently back to Manhattan. It was a huge job and they did it with a smile, carefully wrapping two dozen paintings, vases, lamps and all the other items you seem to accumulate in a house. Unfortunately they had to move our furniture onto a small truck as our block has a lot of circles and curves and then unload and reload to a 60 ft truck waiting outside our dev elopment. They had to do this TWICE in the Florida summer heat and not once did they complain. In fact, Alex glued a piece that had come up off our bedroom bureau and Coke tried to help me when I was trying to set up our roku tv which i had moved in from the spare bedroom since ours was on the moving truck. I also want to commend Sophie for working with us yet again to coordinate everything, including getting us set up with storage up north til our oct 1st move in date. When I finally found the apartment I wanted one of the terms of the lease was to have licensed and insured movers take care of my moving. Coming from a place where we just move ourselves this was a whole new concept to me. Big John's was very flexible in agreeing to let me bring my things to the curb and having their guys take it all into my apartment. They made short work of the pickup truck filled with IKEA and were then happy to wheel my mattress down the street from the store. Even though I paid for 3 hours total (minimum is 2 hours plus an hour for travel) the guy completed everything in about an hour. Their staff was very easy to work with and there was no damage done to the building or my apartment in the process of moving. I would happily use Big John's in the future. read more

Huge disappointment. Went into store as they're very close to my new apartment to get some idea of a quote and was hassled because I didn't want to book immediately & was told I was "wasting my time" considering any other mover. Yes, because there's no reason to get quotes and you should immediately book sight unseen. Don't think so. Also, boxes are overpriced compared to other options in the neighborhood. read more

Moved a a few months ago and used their services, again. First time we used them they were fine (several years ago). We were relieved to have found a moving company (we move a LOT!) that we felt was ethical and up to par in the delivery of their services. We even told our family about them and our building managers about them in New York City, from which Big John's received business. Sad to say, that this time around, we found them to be quite dishonorable. When they came to move us, they told us that the final price would be more than double on top of their original quote because of a 'small error'. They only take cash or bank checks. We had to fight to get them to try and honor their own quote. We got the price reduced but they still refused to honor their OWN quote, excuse was: "a mistake was made on our part BUT STILL - you should understand this and blah blah blah." Wow. Their argument would never hold up in a court of law, as they had put their quotes in writing as all companies do, but we as humans can only fight so many battles. Drivers were late arriving and picking up by almost 2 hours. Sloppy service. Disappointed as my family and I have been using them for years, as has the building we reside in. Will alert the rest of my family and our neighbors of the decline in service and lack of ethical behavior on their part. And the fact that they actually would not honor their own quote and put us through agony arguing about it, is beyond absurd. Very unprofessional on their part. AND TO RESPOND TO THE OWNER'S COMMENT: We did call and we spoke with your assistant. We actually asked to speak with the owner and we were denied that 'privilege'. So get real! And instead of posting a defensive response trying to condescend your one time customer, maybe offer an apology and offer to do better going forward. Of course you have a record of this situation! It dragged on for a while. Please! And I sent him the following message on yelp after he posted his comment - he never even responded! "Dear John, dismissing my feedback as illegitimate is careless on your part. My husband booked our move. I did ask to speak with the owner, but 'Viviene' (sp,?) and another female staff member stated they would be meeting with you and would discuss the situation. The guys were very nice. That said, I felt like I had to baby sit them or they'd be hanging out outside smoking and talking. When you're paying by the hour, this can get annoying. Were they careful with the furniture? Yes. My big complaint was how slow they were, which made the move cost way more than it should have. I'll be using a different moving company next time. I used Prestige movers last time coming from Brooklyn moving to upper east side. Those guys were amazing. I didn't call them this time because I thought travel time would have been more expensive. Best moving company in town! I had an absolutely great experience thanks to the office staff, the estimator and the crew members. First, an estimator came to my apartment for a thorough walk through for pricing and let me tell you, their estimate is right on point on the move day. The crew that was sent to me was absolutely amazing. From their respectful manners and the clean truck, I felt like I was being treated like royalty! Big John's certainly made my very stressful moving experience and transformed it into a walk in the park. I would not hesitate to recommend Big John's to all my friends and colleagues. I moved about four months ago and was SO happy I chose Big Joh n's Moving. They sent over a person a couple weeks before my move to give me an estimate (which was a spot-on estimate, by the way). I have a cat, and the estimator also gave me a list of instructions and advice for how to handle moving a cat. The day of the move, all of the movers arrived on time. They sent 3 guys. One of them was the "supervisor" and directed the other 2 guys. He made sure all of my belongings were moved quickly and safely. Nothing broke, nothing got scratched. All of the movers were VERY polite. I HIGHLY recommend Big John's Moving. I will be using them in all future moves. read more
