Avoid Manhattan Mini Storage -- Poor Communication, Disrespectful Staff, and No Accountability My time with Manhattan Mini Storage was marked by confusion, disrespect, and a complete lack of transparency. From the start, I was given conflicting information about my account. Billing continued even as termination was underway, and I never received a clear, itemized breakdown of what happened to the contents of my unit or how any auction proceeds were applied. When I followed up, the responses were vague and evasive -- never a straight answer. The staff treatment was equally disappointing. I was told I couldn't use the restroom after 6 p.m. -- despite the facility being open past that hour. Only after I escalated the issue to management did that change. Even then, I felt unwelcome every time I needed access to my own belongings. What I found most unacceptable: on multiple occasions, property I had left outside my locker was discarded without my knowledge or consent. No warning. No explanation. Just gone. This is a company that was careless with customers' property, dismissive of legitimate concerns, and unwilling to provide basic accountability. A year later I opened two of my bags to mod's flying out of the bags I took pictures of everything and upon one of the employees instructions, was going to file a claim. I pay for insurance every month. A manager so graciously decided to call me back today and let me know that the insurance claim doesn't cover for moths. RUN. DO NOT USE THIS STORAGE PLACE. These people are so evil. They don't care at all about their customers, this is so horrible I have no idea what to even do right now. I rented this unit after finding out so had to leave to country for work on very short notice. I started moving in my belongings. Halfway through my code to get in the building stopped working. There was someone else outside having the exact same issue. But they aren't leaving the country for work so they can confront these horrible people tomorrow at 8am when they will actually answer. Half my stuff is inside; half is out. They say no one can help me until 8am. I have to be at the airport at 4am. I paid way too much for this unit, and I can't even cancel and move my stuff to another place. I'm completely screwed. They had the audacity to tell me they couldn't do anything because what was happening was "not an emergency, a emergency is when the building is on fire." Right now I am standing outside, half my stuff inside, half out. I absolutely love this place. This is the second time we've used their services and the prices along with the service just can't be beat. Our daughter was getting married last month and we needed to collect some things without loading up her apartment. They were running a special of 1st month free so we did that and used it for 2 months and 2 days. Instead of charging us for another month (which is what I expected - so many places would do this, right??) they prorated and charged me $8. That's right, EIGHT BUCKS for going past our contract. Unbelievable. I love them!! And when we moved everything out, they sell packing boxes, tape, bubble wrap, etc at reasonable prices so we didn't have to lug stuff all over town! The only thing I wish...that they had a shipping service on premises. Like UPS or something!! My response; I'm glad it's important, but larger more secure businesses than yours have had data breaches- Wells Fargo, Yahoo, Marriott, E-Bay, Equifax, Target, Uber, Morgan Chase, Sony Play Station, Verisign, Home Depot etc. Few of these require an SS# (banks being the exception). All personal data was compromised. If the safety of our personal information is indeed important to you, you should change your policy! She wrote; "We ask for your SSN as a precaution to establish your identity for the security of our entire community. We do not run a credit check and we encrypt your data so it is not visible or accessible to our employees. If you are unable to provide an SSN we may still be able to fulfill your storage needs, but we will need some alternate personal information, such as your date of birth, to help establish your identity. " My response; They would NOT accept any other form, repeatedly telling me "this is our policy". And yes, I tried several different workers at several locations. I've been a customer for years at the East 62nd Street location. It's always very clean, I feel safe there and the customer service is great so this is nothing against them at all. I am writing this review though because people should know that StorageMart recently bought them out and the lack of communication to its customers about this and any changes occurring because of this has been poor. In fact, there's been none. I only found out when I switched units because noticed that lower units were going for $84 and I was paying over $100 for a unit that I needed a ladder to get into (mind you I'm 5ft tall). Anyway, two months after switching there was an additional $10 charge on my account which I learned was an insurance fee that they were making all renters have. Fair enough but again no communication about it. Luckily I have renters insurance for my apartment which covers this so I do not have to pay that additional charge. Although not that I'm thinking about it they didn't refund me for it either. The next month my $84 fee jumped to $98. I emailed them and got no response. I called and found out that it's a rent increase and was told that it used to be every year now it's going to be every 5 months. Again no email about this just an unsigned new lease in my account. They insist that they've sent emails about these changes but I've checked my inbox, my trash, my archives, and my spam. There's nothing but my invoices. When I was physically there a month ago I heard the woman in front of me saying the same thing. I realize prices are high everywhere but it's shady to come in as a new owner and make changes without communicating to your longstanding renters. The man on the phone (who was very nice and patient with me) mentioned that he wasn't sure if the 5-month increase would apply to long-time renters. That would be a really nice gesture and I hope they consider it. Again the place itself and its employees are all great. But I feel people should know about the change in business and that it's been pretty disappointing so far. read more

My wife and I have used Manhattan Mini on and off for the last 25 years. Service and amenities used to be top notch. Now, you can't even get anyone to answer the phone, or return calls and emails. Also, astoundingly, our rent for a smallish space @ Spring St location has gone up over 106% -- in less than 3 years! And increased over 30% in just the last 10 months! For the latest increase of nearly 10% (the second increase this year) we were notified on 12/14/23 -- right before holiday travel -- that this substantial rent hike would go into effect on 1/1/24, essentially leaving us no time to make other arrangements. I'm sorry, but that's just shady. As is their practice of putting those and other notices in their monthly email invoice so that you have to open the email and scroll down to see them. After so many years of good service, my wife and I wondered what happened. A quick Google search revealed that the company was sold to Storage Mart in 2021. So for anyone with memories of a good experience at Manhattan Mini -- beware, this is completely different company with lower ethics and values. read more

I paid for this unit online and got a free 2nd month off. However, I got to the location in Jamaica Queens and was told I didn't pay. After I showed my proof my payment, I was checked in and promised that the billing issue will be escalated. 2nd month, I recieved a huge bill that said I'm owing rent and overdue charges. I called this location, nobody would answer. I called another location which gave me Jamaica email address and I wrote them. My email got ignored. Weeks after I got an email saying that the items in my unit are in the process of being auctioned. This was supposed to be the second month free period. I called the location and this time someone picked and told me that my lock has already been cut and my stuff of course would have been gone through. What in the world. Then I got another email that says that the office has recieved my move out date for August 28th. This is the ABSOLUTE worst experience I've ever had with any business! The best thing about this location is the kindness and patience of the manager, Cynthia. I've dealt with her multiple times, and even when a company policy will not allow her to accommodate me, she is always just a really pleasant person. The facility is always clean -- in ten years, I've never found anything crawling in my unit. As storage facilities go, this place is not too scary to walk through (as a single woman alone). One major negative -- so major that I may soon move my belongings elsewhere -- is that the rental fees steadily increase for loyal customers, while new customers get bargain rates. read more

I first moved to NYC in 2018 to start working on my graduate program at NYU. Once I graduated, the house I lived in was sold. I then started the lovely adventure of subletting. It blows in NYC. I can't recommend this place highly enough! The facilities are spotless, well lit, and well kept. There's an off street loading area that accommodates several vehicles (vans and trucks fit too) and a key card entry system that forces you to stop by the front desk before heading to your unit (maybe annoying to some, but I appreciate the extra security that provides!). Best of all service has been absolutely above and beyond every time I've visited, from the super helpful gentleman who set me up with a unit to the person who (probably wasn't supposed to but) offered to watch my giant bag of things when I forgot my storage keys and had to go all the way back home to get them. A clean, neat storefront with multiple entrances, and free parking for customers (2 hours), a truck bay, and plenty of blue carts to move items to and fro in the facility. If you're short, the taller lockers can be reached via a stairstep, but it's still sometimes easier just to get a lower locker. It's $29/month for the smallest lowest unit, but really, you're probably more likely to get a medium-sized unit for anywhere from $60-$100/month if you have more than 5-6 decent-sized boxes. So $372/year isn't horrible. Even $528 isn't bad for a year depending on the size. Shows you the sizes and spaces available online. Also decently secure and AC. Not sure if they have their own generators but a good place to drop a bunch of stuff if you're tight for space in your apartment! read more

I've been a customer here for years, and never experienced such poor service until this afternoon. I came here around 5pm to pick up some packages. I walk over to the area outside of the help desk where there is a sign clearly showing to wait there for assistance. I use my Manhattan Mini Storage ID card to confirm that it works in case I am asked to use it. Guy is sitting there as if nothing happened. Eventually, he points to himself as if to say you're waiting for me? I put my hands out to say who else am I waiting for? Clearly he is not aware of the signs posted outside informing customers of where to wait for assistance. I didn't think it necessary to call the number since he was right there. He tells me he couldn't see me because I'm so tall, which is total BS. I could see him very clearly sitting at the desk. Then he finally comes over to ask what I needed and I tell him I'm here to pick up my packages. He comes back over and asks me for my phone number. I give it to him. He looks up my account and then asks me about payment. Confused, I repeat again that I'm here to pick up my packages. At that point, I became irritated at his indifferent behavior and lack of professionalism, and using the excuse that he is new is not going to cut it. I told him point blank that perhaps my skin color was the reason why he was so reluctant to assist me, and he responds that he didn't need to hear all of that. He needed to hear all of it because he handled a long-time customer in a very poor manner, and there was no excuse for it. Hopefully I won't have to deal with him again. UPDATE: The VP called me last week personally to apologize and set things right. I appreciate her taking the time to do that, as I was definitely considering taking my business elsewhere, so I have updated my review from one star to four stars. It was refreshing to hear someone who gets what good customer service should be. Manhattan Mini Storage - Deceptive pricing and hidden fees I enrolled and paid for the Full Service Plus storage program after connecting with a representative. Upon my move, I was met with expensive moving fees that were not transparent to me during my conversation with a representative. I feel inherently lied to. They charge for moving, which is contrary to their online advertisement that all actions (pick up, storage, drop off) are included in the monthly fee. Not only do they charge for moving, but the entire moving process from pick up to drop off. This creates a barrier of inequality that privileges those who live near the unit (UES) from those that do not. Furthermore, they charge $50 every time you need something from your unit, even if you visit the building. I needed my vaccination card from my unit and I was not allowed to go into my storage unit to retrieve it. They brought down all of my boxes to the lobby and I retrieved my card in matter of seconds. This cost me a hidden $50 even though I went to the storage facility. I am outraged by my experience with these hidden fees and deceptive pricing. Furthermore, my customer service calls were infuriating, aggressive, and argumentative. If you want to sign up, proceed with caution and an extra $500 in your pocket. I will not be giving them my service again. read more

Not only was it quick, but it was a floor level unit exactly the size that I needed. The price was perfect and they were running a special. ON TOP OF THAT I was able to use their van/transport to move all of my stuff from my old apartment to the storage unit. It saved me HUNDREDS of dollars on moving costs. I couldn't believe it! I kept the unit for a few months to help calm the chaos of moving. My new building has some package delivery issues (aka people steal them). Manhattan Mini Storage has a perk where they sign for your packages -- which was SO HELPFUL. When I went to cancel the storage unit because I no longer needed it, Ashley C. was quick, helpful and efficient. No hidden fees, no issues cancelling. I can't recommend them enough. read more

We were happy with our storage and service. One hiccup! I received a call one morning after visited the storage. A guy on the phone told me that my reservation is already expired and asked me if I still wanted the storage. I told him that my reservation isn't going to expire until this Saturday and I've been working with Cindy C. Then he said oh right your reservation is good until Saturday but you don't have to work with one person and everyone can help you. I asked who he is. He said he's from customer service center. I felt very strange because he wasn't nice on the phone and he was not honest about my reservation. Fast forward to Saturday when we were at the store, Cindy C told me that I'm no longer her customer because my reservation is now under a guy named Frank! The girls at the front desk face to customers directly everyday and work so hard, how can people from customer service call center just steal their business like this? The van is amazing, easy to book online they called me 30 min before to let me know they were coming and arrived on time. 240 E 66th St Manhattan Mini Storage was bought out by Storage Mart & they are a night mare. One year ago they raised my rent 2 months in a row then double billed me when they took over. Was insulted a few days ago by Cynthia when I asked if she had a plastic bag to carry my jacket & she tried to sell me a garment bag & said nothings free. I am elderly with spinal injuries & a few days after I met Cynthia the manager I recieved an email that they were doubling my small unit rent by 100%, a $70 increase. Been calling the 800 # for a regional director w/no call backs & being told everyone's raised 50% then that I had to speak to Cynthia. When I called Cynthia she wasn't there but Emmanuel said I remember u asked for the bag & said she didn't double my Rent cause of that- a red flag & he said a SELECT pool of customers got a 50% increase another example of discrimination & retaliation. I saw Cynthis & told her I'm injured & have trouble walking & it's the law to give me 30 days notice & pleaded that I'm elderly & have to move from my apt & she said she can't give me 30 days or lower my rate & said Tony the regional director had my complaint. She said move to another location for a lower rate. If I had know that storage would be so convenient and affordable, I would have gotten a unit years ago! Wow am I psyched with my locker. And Manhattan mini made the entire process virtually seamless. Between having the ability to reserve my locker online, and book movers via a coupon which made the move FREE, I am so thrilled. The best approach is to do all paper work prior to the move. This literally removed all my stress. By the time the move happened, I didn't have to lift a finger. And bait and switch that is effective because of the extreme inconvenience of moving to a reputable storage facility after this disreputable outfit jacks up your price an absurd amount on renewal. I paid $372 for a small room for the last year. Then I received a letter telling me that I would have to pay $528 for the next year. When I spoke to the manager, Jodie Siegel (sp?), she first said we don't increase rates nearly 50% in one year. Then she goes on to say that they were only increasing my rate $48 per year not $156 . Here is her VOODOO ARITHMETIC. She repeatedly said that my prior discounts don't count in calculating how much my rate has increased. Her illogical absurd point was that my increase should be calculated by comparing last years FULL rate without discounts to my new rate with this year's discount. She finally did agree to reduce my new annual rate to $480. That's still a jump from $372 last year. While better than the letter, which said I would pay $528 in the next year, it's still a large increase. IMHO that's a type of bait and switch. Bottom line - GO ELSEWHERE FOR YOUR STORAGE NEEDS! read more

Don't even think about it! Warning! Why are there so few reviews for this company? That in itself is a red flag. This might be one of the better storage facilities out of the schlock that's out there, but their business practices make the customer feel more like prey. Honesty is the most important policy when it comes to a storage facility. You want to know that you are dealing with "up and up" people, treated with respect and professionalism, and that any problems are dealt with fairly. I'm sure that many people, like myself, who have recently lost someone close to them, are customers of storage facilities, but foolishly, this place knows nothing about compassion for this large market! Thank your lucky stars if you ever get out of the East 62nd Street location while you are still living, once you are there! I have heard a number of complaints about Manhattan Mini Storage all from senior citizens, (one of which had to go so far as complain to the Dept. of the Aging), but let me tell you my experience. An 87 year old got locked into paying over $1,200 per month (size that was recommended to her by the storage "advisor" whhich was well over what she needed) and had been "trapped" since moving her belongings there over 10 years ago (with a "free move?). The place may be climate controlled and 24 hours, but her unit had mouse droppings and property had been damaged by flooding. 62nd Street charges you $35 for any small bag of garbage that you want to throw out, so you're "stuck"! (every employee I spoke to told me a different story about the throw out charges-It would be nice if employees knew the rules). They encourage you to rent a dumpster. Anyway, the 87 year old died before being able to resolve her storage problem. I finally got her property out of there last night, but what a nightmare. After thousands of dollars they charged her, they wanted to charge me a late fee that wasn't owed! They refused to let me "give up" the storage room until I paid it and other charges they said were due that I disputed. There was "no manager of duty" (even though they advertise one living on the premises) and "no one was authorized" to help me, so if I didn't pay the balance, I would have continued to incur charges. Paying what I didn't owe was worth it just to be free! I still dispute the charges and reserve my rights. read more

** AWFUL - CLASSIC BAIT AND SWITCH - BEWARE!! ** So I went in here this past Sunday to get some boxes and ask about rates for storage. I had used a Manhattan Mini Storage on the West side last year, so I didn't think too much about using them again. The girl who helped me was very charming and quoted me a rate of $374 a month for a room to hold the contents of a studio apartment. I said that was too high for me and was about to leave, but then she clicked around a bit and said they were having a promotion - the same room was $186 as long as you committed to at least six months. I said that sounded great, but because it was such a drop in price I asked her a few times if she was sure. She assured me that the rate was correct, the only caveat was that you had to stay for six months. This was fine with me. There were two other people behind the counter and they all agreed on this rate, so I made a reservation, picked up my boxes and crossed one major thing off my list. I was told I would get a confirmation email with all the details. I never received the email, so I went back in the next day to get some more boxes and ask about the email. When I went to the counter, the girl who had helped me was not there, so another girl talked to me. She told me that the rate I had been quoted was wrong and that there must have been a "glitch in the system". (I have to say, that phrase rolled off her a tongue a little too easy.) She said the rate for this room was now $374! When I told her I had been quoted $186, she clicked around and told me they could do $286. All I could think was it's a good thing I came in to check on my missing email or I would have shown up to move in and gotten completely screwed. I finally spoke to a manager who explained that the girl who had helped me was new and she made a mistake and couldn't I understand that. The thing is, that argument didn't even hold water because there were two other people working with her and they all agreed on the rate. (And honestly, why should I have to pay the price for this girl not being trained properly?) I found it a bit suspicious too that my email address had been "written down wrong" (or so I was told) and that's why I never got the confirmation email. The manager, an older woman with glasses, was argumentative and did her best to make me feel unreasonable and I finally told her she should simply honor the rates given by her employees. After arguing with me for several minutes, she told me she would do the first six months at $186, but after that the rate would jump to $286. She behaved like she was doing me a big favor and I told her to forget it, that I didn't trust her at all. She then repeated her offer three more times (perhaps she thought I couldn't hear her?) and I told her again that she should honor the rates given, that I didn't trust her or her facility and to cancel the reservation. At this point I didn't believe a word anyone in this place said to me. (Would you?) I posted my photos of the RATE CARD I was given in the photos section above. It clearly says "186" with nothing written in the time limit. (The manager took the card and wouldn't give it back!!) BEWARE of this place, folks, GET IT IN WRITING BEFORE YOU PAY OR SIGN ANYTHING. I'm just grateful I hadn't given them my credit card details before I realised they were completely scamming me. Judging from the reviews here I am not the only one. Sad, really. **EDITED TO ADD 9/12/13** Nice try Adam and thanks for the reply, but the room I was shown on the Sunday was a 5x7x8, NOT a 4x4 as stated in the comment below - but did I write it down? No. Can I prove it? Probably not. The employee who showed us the room was so nice that I trusted her which was my mistake. I wouldn't trust anyone there again, no way! I say this again -- ** GET IT IN WRITING ** -- and honestly, it wasn't just this new employee who quoted this rate for this room, it was all three staff members working that day. All three of them agreed on the rate as long as you stay at least six months. That was the offer. All I wanted was the room I was shown at the rate I was quoted. So either the staff I dealt with are completely shady or completely incompetent, who knows, but it doesn't matter - on Tuesday I went and found storage space at a nice Manhattan facility - the rate was the same the next day, everything written down, email sent, no games, no tricks, no nonsense. Very professional and above board which is how it should be (and more than I can say for MMS on 62nd Street.) If anyone reading this wants to know where my lovely new storage space is, please just ask - I will be happy to share. And yes Adam, YAY for YELP indeed. Hopefully your staff will learn to treat their customers with respect and perhaps gain more positive Yelp reviews in the future. read more

I highly recommend this Manhattan Mini Storage. Cynthia and her team were so helpful, and the facility is great!

I want to go to there! In contrast to my apartment right now, MMS at 62nd and 1st is the following things: clean, bright, orderly, climate-controlled, and safe. (Okay, saying my apartment is unsafe is stretching things. But it doesn't have a security system!) I'm really impressed with the customer service, too. I was initially going to rent one of the tiny, tall rooms. When the storage advisor listened to what I planned to use it for (a short-term closet space while between leases), he actually encouraged me to go smaller--which is saving me a nice amount of money. The unit he got for me has great access, too. It's near the elevators and on a corner, and is accessible for a petite person like myself. (How I would ever get into one of the closets-stacked-on-other-closets, I do not know.) Then I called to set up the curbside moving service MMS offers for the rest of the boxes lingering in my former home. For the amount I needed to take over, I thought I would need the moving services that aren't free. Again, after I talked to the moving advisor, he figured out that I could fit my amount of stuff in the free storage shuttle. So my moving truck costs just dropped to $0. I basically got to pick the day and time, although if you need their services at the beginning or end of the month, you need to call well in advance. *************************** Update: had the moving service on Sunday. It was flawless. I had to change the time window a few days before, which was no problem. The driver called me about 30 minutes before he arrived. He helped us load stuff into the van, then we headed off to the storage place. Within an hour, I had all my stuff in my storage closet. For free! Yay! read more
