I moved into Extra Space storage in July 2020 during some of the worst moments of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was furloughed from my job and with no relatives in NYC, the best decision at the time was to place most of my belongings in storage while out of NYC. Like so many, I had no idea I would be furloughed for over a year and that I'd still hear of rising COVID cases in 2021. I rented a 10'x5' storage unit and strategically packed my items into the unit. I recently moved back to the city and moved my things out of storage to find WATER ON THE FLOOR of my unit and MOLD growing on the majority of my belongings. During this pandemic I lost so much but I cannot begin to tell you what it was like to lose almost everything I owned. My exhaustion from bad news and loss made me somewhat numb. But the more I think about it, I lost more than I would have ever expected. I'm talking furniture, clothing, shoes, home decor. Destroyed and covered in HAZARDOUS MOLD. And my industry has not yet been fully restored. To add insult to injury for over a year I paid Extra Space Storage they raised their rates THREE TIMES. THREE TIMES IN A YEAR. A YEAR IN WHICH MOST PEOPLE WERE UNEMPLOYED AND STRUGGLING AND THEIR BUSINESS WAS BOOMING. When I discovered my items were destroyed, I went to the office to discuss it with the facility manager. I was told they don't have trash cans or dumpsters on the premises. I was given a few trash bags, rubber gloves but I ultimately had to pay a company (Junk Luggers) $420 to remove and throw out my things after paying EXTRA SPACE STORAGE $324+/month for over a year. I'm not even sure if it was safe to touch what I tried to save from my unit. NOT ONLY THIS!!!! NOT ONLY THAT!!! Just a day after discovering this damage and talking to the manager about the hazardous mold in the office. I received not one, not two, but THREE calls from the office about how my last month's payment was late. I had paid them on time for over a YEAR! I paid the last amount owed. No one offered me any discount/compensation for the amount I paid for a year to have my things destroyed in this facility. I don't even really remember a heartfelt apology. I was just handed a brochure to call the insurance company for my damage. I hate writing bad reviews but I feel like people should be warned so this doesn't happen to them. read more

Update - I have now moved to a new storage unit (Manhattan Mini Storage) a few blocks away, reducing my monthly storage rate from $161 to just under $98. This is the for the same size unit (5x5). The location is not nearly as updated as Extra Space Storage; however, Manhattan Mini assured me that they do not raise their rates for at least one year. I also looked at Weston Storage in nearby suburbs. If you have a car, then that is an option. They guarantee their rates for 2 years! And don't be late as they will charge 20 dollar late fee on the 6th day even though they say you have one week. my rate went from 20 to 40 dollars after the first month and I got a 20 dollar late fee. I used this facility for summer storage. I had no problem checking out the rental unit and the woman who helped me was very nice, but checking it back in was a bad experience. After removing my lock and ubering all of my items home, I called to let the worker know all of my stuff was out of my unit and that I was done using it. He suddenly gets very angry and tells me that I should've checked it out while I was there and that I have to check in my rental unit in person so that an employee can inspect that everything was cleaned out properly. I figured that was my fault for not knowing that policy, so I drove there only to find the office empty and the door locked despite it being 2pm on a Monday. I've attached a picture of the empty office below. The worker finally enters the office 15 minutes later and I tell him I'd like to check in my rental unit. He doesn't bother inspecting the unit like he claimed was necessary on the phone, and hands me my receipt without saying a single word. It's unfortunate that one employee will prevent me from using this nearby storage unit that I otherwise had no problem with. read more

I had heard from a neighbor of this storage located in Harlem on a 129th Street and Convent Avenue. Was not expecting it to be a pleasant experience. I have dealt with staff in other storage companies that were very rude and abrupt. What a pleasant surprise and a delight to be serviced by very friendly, very helpful staff. Christina, the person who assisted me and walked me through the facility, was very pleasant, quite knowledgeable and very detailed when answering my many questions. So to follow up to my review. No one else has bothered to contact me like Emily had assured me. When I did speak with her I believe she had said that the yelp review responses are computer generated. Unfortunately this is not the first time that they have failed to return my call, they did this to me twice before I even left a review.There is no specialty care like they pretend to give. It's obviously just for show on the internet.The more I deal with Extra Space Storage the worse it gets. Everything is a smoke show with them ! They reel you in with an introductory price and quickly proceed to raise it up to 3 times in a year . There is no loyality for long term renters. And it's sad how condescending and manipulative they are. They do not make you aware up front about paying for time in advance. It's a shame Life Storage was bought out by them. Please do your due diligence when looking for storage. Check and see how often they can raise your rent,also check to see if you have what they refer to as a PRIME SPOT. And lastly check to see if you will be able to speak with corporate management if necessary. I've looked into other storage and have now found more favorable terms. . What happened here was not ok. I was attacked by a person renting a unit here. I was grabbed off the ladder and thrown onto the floor. I did not know what was going to happen, if I was going to die. I saw my life flash before my eyes. I kept screaming, "please don't hurt me, please don't kill me." He dragged me through the aisles. I didn't know what was going to happen, saw my life flash by. He laid on me and I didn't know if I was going to die. Police were called, he was arrested, I was called to witness. The workers at this facility (Jasmine, Linda) constantly harass, intimidate, and blame me. They intently trigger my PTSD by calling me, even after I called and reached agreements with the corporate office at least five times for a simple request to not call me, simply because that triggers me to the point of not functioning for a week. Do you think it's really such a huge thing to ask a storage facility to email, instead of calling you for minor administrative stuff, so they don't trigger you into non-functioning oblivion on Christmas Eve? If I could give a ZERO star rating, I would. #1) In 18 months, my rate DOUBLED. I understand increases, but the unit rental fee increased EVERY month since I moved in. Yet, no additional services or benefits. #2) Storage facility had a massive leak, effectively ruining ALL of my belongings. Not only did the facility force me to move my items out of my unit AT MY OWN COST AND INCONVENIENCE so they could "repair" my unit, they then expected me to move all of my items back after the work was completed, which would result in additional moving costs. I ended up moving out because no one has time or money to be this inconvenienced, especially when the timeline for repair of my unit was "we are not sure". The storage company clipped my personal locks when the damage happened and took MORE THAN A MONTH to get me the keys to the new lock they put on my unit citing they "had not yet assessed the damage of the unit". Meanwhile, in that month, massive / HAZARDOUS mold grew on all of my belongings. #3) The insurance company they use is a JOKE. it has been 4 MONTHS since my items were ruined and I am still fighting the insurance company for the max $3,000 payout when the cost of all of my ruined items far exceeds $10K, and includes items and heirlooms I cannot replace. As a result, I have had to spend money to get my attorney involved. This place is a joke!!! Of course, we forgot something in storage before driving my son back upstate for school ("we" because it's hasn't yet been proven whose fault this was). When I got the call, I immediately thought about the people we never heard while doing our thing who all of a sudden popped out of nowhere to catch the elevator, on each of our different visits to our unit, as the doors were about to close and go down to the ground floor. One day there was a guy who appeared with empty packaging in his hand that I'd neither store let alone make a trip to my storage unit to retrieve. "Nah," I thought, "I'm calling to see if a staffer will escort me. That empty box made NO sense." And you know what? They did. I called the front desk at 40 Convent, explained that I normally swing by with my son but that I'd have to check on something by myself, and asked if someone would escort me to my unit. They were totally happy to do it. We agreed on a day and time I'd show up, and I called the day of too so I could make sure things were still on, and they were still totally cool about it. When I arrived, I realized that I was just imagining things. 40 Convent had that usual buzz about itself with a few people coming in and out as I walked onto the property that day, which reminded me of one of the reasons why I had a good feeling about this place. I made sure to cancel my scheduled escort in-person and thanked them for being willing. I went to my unit's floor, took a few minutes to walk around and look for a ladder (which I don't normally need to do for as long as I did that day), did my thing, and boarded the elevator. The door closed without any surprises. I mean, I do carry pepper spray and have a few tricks up my sleeve to fight for my life if I need to. But on this particular visit, I felt as okay on my own as I did when my son was with me. No worries. This is definitely the place to store your stuff if certain scenarios make you go, "nah" or "uhn-uhn, boo boo". #AsGoodAsItGets read more

Linda and Joe were very friendly and helpful, the service was fast and efficient, and I was able to get a storage space for super cheap! I urgently needed a storage space because my university was kicking everyone out due to the outbreak. I made a reservation online and they called me right away. Joe was very helpful over the phone, and told me I could get a 5x5 unit for $16 if I came in early enough to reserve it. I came in and got the unit the same day. Linda helped me with the reservation process and she was very professional, informative, and friendly throughout. The entire process only took me twenty minutes and I was super satisfied with the experience. 10/10! Definitely use this extra space storage if you are close by! read more

After storing at a nearby competitor for 18 years we moved our stuff to this facility when it opened because it was much closer to our apartment. Regret the decision more every day. Mostly because of the poor customer service, poorly designed facility and limited "open" time access. Facility: -- very small cramped loading area, one (small) truck at a time -- height of garage door openings too low for standard rolling racks to clear (the basic ones you get at Container Store -- or free at other mini storage facilities) -- poor security. If someone is loading or holding a cart near the elevators the sliding glass doors stay open. You can then just walk in without using your security code. As could anyone. Staff: -- don't know layout of facilities multiple floors or have a map. Walked around for 15 minutes behind staff member trying to find a unit of a particular number/size. (on two occasions with two different people) -- takes multiple calls to get someone to answer the phone. -- made multiple calls to me about my "inquiry" for storage AFTER I had signed my lease. -- On two different weekends one of the staff members had parked their personal vehicle in the already impossibly small loading area. When asked politely if they could move it long enough for us to off load our small U-Haul van the answer was "No" and the car stayed. Access: -- Think twice if you work days. Only open until 7:00pm M-Sat. Until 4:00 Sundays -- Closed on holidays including 4th of July, which is a move-in weekend this year. (Note, the competitors are open holidays.) It's new and sparkly.
