So you probably already know that moving is basically the worst thing you can ever do. I've moved a bunch of times in the past ten years, so I'm pretty used to it, but it's still horrible. But I'm so glad I hired Shea this time, because they made it a lot more pleasant. Seriously, these guys are great. We have a ton of stuff, including around six zillion books, and Brian and his crew were totally efficient and professional in getting all our stuff to the new place. They showed up right on time and they were finished just when they said they would be. They also stuck to the estimate, which I really appreciated, and their prices are totally reasonable (last mover I hired cost literally $1000 more). And there wasn't a single thing broken, which was sort of a miracle because to be honest, I'm not a very good packer so other moves have finished with broken stemware and so on. They are more than willing to assist with anything and as able to follow through with their commitments. Yes, it's COVID days, things go wrong, employees don't show up suddenly, but the wonderful Sheas did not leave me hanging, Brian did most of the move on his own (no easy feat when it's a third floor walk up), and Julie helped with the seriously heavy stuff. By 10 PM the move was done, a little later than expected and with warmth, caring and friendliness above and beyond any movers I have known. Professional, coordinated, and kind team! We needed a mover for the next day (short notice) but Julie and her team got the job done. Although we had signed up for four men they soon realized that five were needed to get the work done and brought an extra man on board to finish on time. They didn't nickel and dime us for this, they just made sure the job got done. The crew were polite and professional and when the job was done the team leader reviewed the charges so we'd all be on the same page and I could settle my bill. Great experience with these guys. Talked the most with Jed in person, but my husband communicated with Julie during the scheduling process. Very organized, very prompt. They were quick in wrapping up our large items, no scratches or dragging on the hard wood floors, and it was a second floor walk up -- so it was a little extra work involved. When we got to our new place, they were equally efficient in moving our furniture inside after we told them where we wanted things to go. They moved our beds to the second floor. Here and there they had some trouble with tight corners, going up the front steps to the front door, but they never complained or made comments. Would recommend! read more

You can trust them for expensive designer furniture. I have never used moving companies before, I am in property management and usually we do our own moving for other people. But this time it was my own belongings, $25,000+ worth of furniture all newly purchased. I was extremely nervous about this move. Moving inexpensive lightweight furniture is not the same thing as moving high-end designer furniture. I conducted online research looking for companies that can handle expensive furniture moving, searching on Yelp, Google and other recommendation communities. I went one by one through each negative person's reviews before I narrowed my search to Shea moving and another company. I'm sad to write a 2-star review of them, because they were so damn nice on the phone and I really, really wanted to like them. But they simply didn't do a very good job. I definitely had the sense that they had some good, hard-working guys, but they were not particularly caring, broke several things, damaged a family heirloom antique and moved it in a way that we did not feel was professional or fully accounting for its massive size and irreplaceable nature, and generally had a "throw shit in a box" approach. Their customer service was wonderful and the people were generally nice and likable throughout, I just didn't feel that they actually offered truly professional, quality service. I think part of this was on account that they had underestimated how long it would take to pack everything and so people were scrambling to pack it all on moving day. They were supposed to send 3 guys the pre-move packing day and only sent 2, one of whom said he was a replacement for someone else who bailed, and then ended up being short 1 man for half the day on moving day, as well. They, like many other companies, advertise that they are experienced in fine art and antique moving, but I would not trust them for this again. Again, I'm sad to give them 2 stars. I will never call anyone else if I ever have to go through the horror that is moving again. From the first visit with Brian, he assessed our stuff accurately and provided both an hourly estimate and a flat rate to Julie's friendliness and helpfulness over the phone... When our house purchase and sale went all wrong, Shea was one of the bright spots out of an awful experience all around. They didn't penalize us for canceling/postponing. They helped however they could, were patient, and their crews were nothing but professionals. Our 1 day simple move from house to house turned into a scrambled, messy ordeal that got dragged out into 2 days of moving into 2 storage pod units, (with atypical snow!) and an ultimate move-in to our new house 3 weeks later. Lyndell, Dave Ortiz, and Seth were absolute rock stars. Ortiz played the best game of Tetris into the 2 storage pod units I've ever seen. He packed those things within an inch to the ceiling. It was seriously amazing. They're a family owned business, which I appreciated. The crew told us how they are treated like family which is admirable. Their credentials with insurance, D.O.T., etc. all checked out in my research, etc. I've recommended them several times since and I will continue to do so. When I moved the 150 or so blocks south to Little Italy, I called them. And they were amazing. I found Shea through Yelp and based on reviews I decided to go with them after I met Brian. Julie and Brian are very friendly and responsive. My move was slightly complicated because I had a mattress that going to New Jersey and the rest of my stuff to Sunnyside. The movers arrived on time and were incredibly courteous and helpful. My move was right after the last snow storm which piled on about 18 inches of snow. Despite having to go around giant mountains of snow, the movers got me moved in to the new place only an hour over the original estimate. Nothing was damaged in the move. After having numerous bad to fair experiences with movers in NYC, I can finally say that I've found a company worth recommending and returning to. They are true professionals! read more

I didn't find an apartment until just 2 weeks prior to the end of our lease, so I was glad that Shea was able to fit me into their schedule. Fortunately, I had a flexible move in schedule and I'm sure that made it easier for them to do the move on a Monday instead of a weekend day. In any case, from beginning to end, they were extremely helpful and courteous. They sent Brian to do an in-person estimate. I don't think the actual "estimate" really took that long but he spent a while chit chatting. The estimate was completely reasonable and they have a policy where even if the actual work effort is higher, they only charge the estimated cost. They ended up being almost right on with the estimate. The move went extremely smoothly. The guys took exceptional care of all our possessions and were very good with communicating with us throughout the day to always ask us what we want to do with our stuff. We moved from Astoria to Hoboken and there were no issues with doing a Queens to New Jersey move. Highly recommend these guys! read more

It's very rare in New York to find professional, competent movers that don't try to rip you off. Shea rises above even this high bar by being pleasant to deal with, both on the phone and in person. I've used Shea twice, and both moves went off without a hitch. They're extra careful when it comes to wrapping all furniture and miscellaneous items. They wrapped all of my hanging artwork that was too big for boxes instead of just throwing it in the truck like some movers. A standing mirror got wrapped in padded blankets, and then a layer of cardboard was added on the glass side for extra protection. My dining table was separated into two pieces and wrapped separately, instead of relying on tape and hope to keep it together like other movers I've had. When it comes to movers there's really no need to look any further than Shea. Note: If you pay with a credit card there is a 3% surcharge, so make sure you have enough cash to cover the move and a tip before they show up. read more

From start to finish, they were the nicest, friendliest, and most helpful moving company and movers I have ever used. Or even heard of. My buddy recommended them and raved and rave about how smooth the service was. I was skeptical, but they definitely lived up to his five-star review! And for several hundred dollars less than I expected to pay. Scheduling the move was smooth as butter, but I expected a few hiccups on moving day, since that's usually how it is. But then the guys showed up and were every bit as friendly, nice, and professional as you could hope. Actually, nicer. You'd never think to hope that you'd have movers who were so lovely. Periodically they'd say to me or my husband, "Could I show you something?" and then they'd show us some small piece of age-old damage on our furniture and say, "I just wanted you to see this before we move it." So polite and unassuming, but they made sure we were all on the same page before the move so there were no surprises. It was much appreciated, and all our furniture made to to the new apartment with no damage. I'd also like to call out their helpfulness in moving boxes into the new apartment. Whenever they found an unlabeled box, all the guys would find me and say, "Where would you like this box?" instead of just plopping it on the closet bare floor. Such service! I used Shea when moving apartments in my building. Shea came highly recommended from a co-worker who used them for their recent move and they did not disappoint. From the initial conversation to the move itself, everything was great. I could not have asked for a better experience. I used Shea Moving upon my move to Astoria from out of state and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I contacted Julie via email and she quickly got back to me with a quote and answered all of my questions. I only wanted movers to help me with the unload since I was coming in from out of state, which was easy to set up (the other companies I contacted gave me a bit of a runaround on this) and they were super flexible. There was also no minimum amount of time I had to reserve, which was great. The two movers sent to help were efficient, friendly and didn't bat an eye at having to move everything up a tight stairwell to the fourth floor. I was impressed at how quickly they did everything, and did not dawdle at all. They even helped put my bed frame together when I needed help. For my move from Astoria to Park Slope, I got five estimates -- Shea was right in the middle, but I loved that the "capped" the estimate, meaning that I knew I wasn't going to spend more than that, even if there were unforeseen problems. The movers showed up on time, were extremely courteous and didn't once complain about the heat or the stairs or my furniture -- not a single four-letter word (that I could hear). I was really anxious about hiring a moving company because the last time I moved, the company broke a lot of my stuff and even worse, I had given them a pretty big tip before unpacking and finding out! So this time I interviewed and got quotes from four different companies to try to make a more informed decision. Shea Moving was the last company I got a quote from because I immediately felt comfortable with them. Brian came over and personally checked out my place and the amount of stuff I had. He was extremely calming and felt very trustworthy. We talked about having 5 guys pack up my place for efficiency, but only 2 guys on the truck and to unpack to keep my price down (I was moving out of town- about 2 hours away). I was on the phone with Anna multiple times because my date changed due to restrictions with the elevator in my building. She was so reassuring and patient. Everything worked out really well. They showed up on time, were extremely efficient, hardworking, strong, and polite. Their price was good. Slighter higher than one of the places I had looked at, but less than the other two. I HATE moving, but I actually felt relatively relaxed with these guys doing the work, even at 35 weeks pregnant and feeling super neurotic and anxious. Nothing got broken and things got done fast. It's easy to get nit-picky with this type of thing, but the bottom line is this: Shea kept their word and got their stuff to my new place in a reasonable time and damage free. Look, moving is never easy and things always go wrong with a move, but this company delivered on what they promised. I think it's great that Brian actually comes out and gives you a capped estimate beforehand: they know what they're getting into and you know the maximum you'll have to pay. Our job -- despite obstacles -- actually turned out to be dead on the estimate anyhow. As far as price goes, I think they're fair, but you will have cheaper options for sure. That being said, they were cheaper than Flaterate and with movers... you get what you pay for. read more

When they arrived, we had separated our items into things we'd been able to box up before they arrived and things we were planning to take via taxi, because we assumed they were too cumbersome or delicate for the movers. They asked us if we just wanted to take everything, since they had extra room in the truck and they had brought their own packing stuff. We agreed with slight hesitation, but they whisked our items away. Our new apartment is on the fourth floor of a walk-up, and our moving date was that Sunday after New Year's with all the ice and hail and rain... and they were still able to get the whole load done in less than the minimum time. Hiring a mover can be crap shoot -- it can be unexpectedly costly, or worse. Having reached the point in life where I could afford movers, and had zero interest in finding friends to help, I asked around my neighborhood (Astoria) for recommendations. Shea came with very high recommendations, and I was not disappointed. We first hired them when my now-wife and I moved in together from our separate Astoria apartments. They were very upfront about costs, giving us a free estimation. When it came time for the move, they managed to take everything from two apartments, and deliver them to our new home in just a few hours. It was great. The guys really knew what they were doing and worked hard. They said they were going to take a 30 minute lunch break, and they were back on the job in 15. We were pretty much settled in by 2pm that day. And it cost just what they quoted us. No hidden fees or anything. We were so pleased, that when it came time to say goodbye to Astoria and move to the suburbs, there was no question whom we would choose. Again, the guys were great -- they moved all our stuff so that we were settled in by the afternoon. I swear, even if I have to move to another state I'd call Shea and see what they could offer. We used Shea Moving to move from Astoria to Manhattan this fall, and everything was smooth, professional, top-notch, from start to finish. As others have mentioned, from the on-site estimate to moving day, everyone we came into contact with from Shea was kind and very efficient. It took about two hours for their team to pack our boxed-up one-bedroom (in a fifth-floor walkup) and about an hour to move it into our new place. Despite the hefty hike up to our old place, I never heard anyone on the team complain, and they seemed to be as careful packing and wrapping furniture as they would have been with their own pieces. All in all, it was the easiest part of the entire apartment-hunt and moving process, and I couldn't be more pleased and happy. The day after our move, the horror of unpacking over 100 boxes became apparent. As we whittled the pile down box by box over the weeks and then months, my wife realized that a few items were missing and somehow didn't make the move. These were things of low intrinsic value but high sentimentality. I was loath to admit that we might have lost a few things that 'fell off the truck.' But my wife persisted and called Shea - 5 months after we moved. Did they have these lost items? Sure enough, they did! These items became separated from the original batch and, absent any identifying name, Shea held the items in the hopes that the owner would one day call. When we finally did, they were incredibly apologetic and delivered the items to our door the next day. Frankly, I didn't think there was a chance in hell we'd ever see those things again. There were photos in the box that my wife was heartbroken over losing. Thanks to Shea, we're all in one piece. I wouldn't think of using anyone else if I ever have to move. read more
