I love their salads! It's a great place to come and eat a giant bowl of leaves. Definitely one of my faves. Honestly, I'm writing this review because of one person. I have been to Newk's countless times, and one of their employees, Adam, is a rockstar. The guy is the the most hard working person in there. He always greets with you a smile, greets you, tells everybody how much he appreciates their business, and just goes above and beyond for all the customers to make sure they have a great experience. Study spot / date spot / lunch spot - good for all of them! The location had me concerned that i'd be in for a crappy experience - but I was pleasantly surprised. I was attracted by the free wifi at first, but the food is good stuff. I like that they focus on thin crust pizzas - the old fashioned choices are a hit here. I liked the sausage n pepperoni pizza! Cobb salad was great too - lots of bacon, chicken, etc. Perhaps a little heavy on the dressing, so next time I may go with the dressing on the side The soups are decent as well. I like these order up front type places too. Easy for going with groups or going alone and hanging out for a while. You don't have some brat looming over you waiting for you to get out of their "tip zone". At dinner there's a good part of the restaurant with the "mood" lighting, and then another part with some decent lighting for if you gotta get work done. We had an office lunch today, and nobody could agree on where to go. I finally made the Executive Decision to go to Newks. Two folks had been before, but the rest of us hadn't, so we all jumped on board. I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find 2 tables that we could push together to accomodate all 10 of us - it was a bit of a challenge, as the place was rather full. It was noisy, but not too overwhelming - we were easily able to have a conversation at our table. I ordered the Newk's Favorite Salad, subbing Feta for Gorgonzola. It came in an ENORMOUS red bowl, and it was really quite good. I think the chunks of chicken were perhaps a little bit dry, but the overall flavor of the whole salad was good. The lettuce was nice and crisp, something I've felt was lacking on a few salads I've had lately. I will definitely go back to Newk's, I want to try some of their pizzas and some of their soups. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go with my family. It's a tad on the pricey side, but the quality ingredients and solid food make up for it. My favorite is the Pesto Chicken Sandwich (with goat cheese!). The soups I've tried have all been great and their salads are excellent as well. The potato soup is particularly great and I've always had a good ratio of lettuce/veggies to dressing in the salads. The interior has a nice casual vibe and I like the booths and tables set-up. It can get a little congested at the front (where you order) and if you want water, it's not in the soda machines but at the back in a big glass pitcher. A little pricey for a sandwich but you get what you pay for - a lunch that will keep you full all day. I could barely finish my amazing chicken salad sandwich on thick toasted bread. They also offered accompaniments like fruit salad and coleslaw - both were fresh and a good alternative to potato chips. But even after all our food, it didn't stop me and my husband from fighting over the last bite of coconut cake for dessert! And it's not like we usually do dessert, but the cashier suggested it as we were paying and it just sounded so appealing... (side note: he openly bragged to his boss after we commented on his successful up-selling, thought that was funny). All in all, this is a nice spot for lunch. It's pretty comparable to Panera in terms of décor and ambience, maybe a little fancier. You get to help yourself to things like pickles and crackers and drinks so that helps if you're on a time crunch. read more

Newk's is averagely good, and it offers everything you need at a fast-casual cafe. It is somewhat unique, and there is even roasted garlic and Sriracha for your...American food...? The menu is all over the place, and most items seem to be a very simplistic take on a normally complex dish. They have things from lobster and crab bisque to pizzas to po' boys. The food was prepared well, but the flavors were definitely a bit lacking. The zesty black bean soup lacked zestiness. The Newk's Q had sliced chicken, swiss cheese, and a mayonnaise based "BBQ sauce," so it was nothing special. The shrimp po' boy had 12 unflavored shrimp, and they were not fried. The "Tippah County caviar" was an ordinary black-eyed pea salad. I will say that Newk's sandwich rolls are delicious. They are crusty, soft, and hearty. It is a tad pricey, but Newk's offers many different options for different appetites. Newk's is definitely not worth a trip out to the Arboretum for, but if you are in the area, it is a good choice for a cafe that has a diverse menu to cater to a large group. read more

I feel like patrons are always waiting to pounce on the next person who gets up from their table. They do have some really great pizzas. But I love the lunch combos they have available. Either the salad & sandwich or soup & salad combos are what I typically go with. Pretty good sized portions, and the potato soup is just like mom used to make it! Perfect for a cold day out. Ceasar salad isn't my favorite... order the Greek instead! The staff working the counters and taking orders is really friendly and seem to keep the line moving pretty quickly. Wish they had a few more people working to bus tables though. As I said, people are always waiting to grab a table after they've placed their order at lunchtime, so turning those tables over faster by getting them cleaned off faster would make sitting down at a table a little less stressful. I do recommend this place because it is a good lunch spot in the Arboretum area, and is priced very reasonably. Will keep coming back! read more

This business is absolutely amazing!! It was my first time dining at Newks and I'm in love with the concept. Everything about it puts the customer in mind. The food is phenomenal, but on top of that, you can dress it up with your favorite toppings and customize it as you like. I loved this, because I always order extra cheese and croutons on my salad at other places, but here I didn't have to do that, I was able to fix it just how I liked it. Quality food for sure!!! i like this place for a quick lunch b/c you can get in and out and be back at work on time. the lines look long, but they have a few registers so it moves pretty quickly. not sure if this is part of the cafe express chain, but they have a similar condiments table that makes me think so (and yummy complimentary breadsticks!) u thought they were famous for pizzas so i got one, but it wasn't great, a big soggy and too oily in my opinion. i opted for the veggie sandwich the next time with zucchini, eggplant, and goat cheese and it was divine! big portion and the flavors were great. i think the sandwiches are the way to go if you eat here. i've also seen the salads which come in a large mixing bowl, and that looks like a great option too. there's some seating outside for a nice day and parking is a little packed but that's the arboretum for ya. read more

Newks is pretty good. Not great, but good. With a few minor changes, it could be really good. I usually get a a salad when I go there for lunch with co-workers. The salads are generously sized and come in really cool bowls that kinda tilt towards you and make it easier to eat. Only problem is, the salads range between $8-12 I think that's a little high for a salad, but oh well. Tomato Basil Soup is also a favorite. It different than La Madeline's in that it's not as creamy and has more tomato in it. I love it! Main reason I give this place 3 instead of 4 stars is for their pepper and relish bar. They purposely don't put out side plates so you don't load up on their goodies. I really think if you're going to put that stuff out and let people take it, you should put out something that can actually be used. As it is, they give you tiny Solo plastic cups to put your peppers, garlic and oil in. It always makes a big mess and could be so easily remedied by providing side plates. Decent place overall. I had a steak sandwich with carmalized onions and mayo. There wasn't enough mayo on the sandwich, and it didn't come with Au Jus... other then that it was pretty tasty. We stopped in to Newks one evening when we had a hankering to try something new. We blankly stared at the menu, as there is quite a variety of options. The cashier was very helpful and suggested menu items for us. I decided to have the half grilled steak sandwich with the half greek salad and my husband had the Newks "Q" sandwich, per the cashier's high recommendation. I thought the grilled steak sandwich had good flavor, and my husband thought the "Q" sandwich was good with the white BBQ sauce adding interesting flavor. There wasn't anything spectacular about either one. I wasn't fond of the dressing on the greek salad, but I can't put my finger on why. However, there's nothing worse than leaving a cafe-type place where you just dropped $18 feeling like you only had a snack. I wouldn't consider myself to have a huge appetite, so eating a half sandwich and half salad and still feeling hungry isn't acceptable. read more

Stopped into Newks a week ago. This was my second time to Newks. The food is good. I had a sandwich / salad combo. The sandwich was good, but nothing to write how about. I think the system they have for bring food out is a bit inefficient. They give each person a number for their order,seems pretty normal right. However when you have a large restaurant packed with customers as they do. It seem like their food runners are just wandering around scanning numbers. Some tables might have 3-5 numbers on it for each persons food. I really feel bad for the food runners that spend their day walking through a very busy restaurant carrying food while scanning for numbers that might match the numbers. Last time we sat on the porch since the inside was so packed. So the food runner spent time scanning inside of the restaurant, then found us outside. Again the food is good, just the delivery of the food seems it could be refined into a more efficient system. read more

Great salads , soups at a inexpensive price next to Saks on Great Hills Trl! Quick, clean and good food in the best part of town. Also veggie dinners and pizza, meats too! Going back again! Serves beer and wine and inexpensive for the expensive area. If you are in the area the fresh foods and salads sure beat TGIF or other places that have lots of fatty foods! Tried Newk's today and was less than impressed. All three of the pizzas we got were very bready. There was no crispiness to them at all. If asked how the soup or macaroni was all we could say was "eh it's alright". Macaroni got cold very quickly. And soup tastes like it is straight out of a can. Aside from the huge variety of salads, sandwiches and pizzas, it's easy and quick to get your food here. The cashiers are smiley which makes lunchtime an altogether happier experience. I am pretty much in love with the NEWK's Favorite salad (minus the chicken). And yes, I could drink the sherry vinaigrette dressing - it's that fabulous. I have been here more than a few times now and think this is a solid place to grab a good lunch. The sandwiches are flavorful albeit maybe a bit small (probably rightsize). I hail from the rival city of College Station and where I experienced by first Newks. I've always been a fan of their bread. It's just so fresh and so delicious. But, if you get past the awesomeness of the bread you'll find the sammies are loaded with protein. They make their own dressing in house so everything you get is always fresh. Recently however my customer service experiences have outshined the food. That's saying a lot. I came in on a Saturday night 15 minutes to closing. I let the cashier know if they'd already started to close the kitchen they could let me know. I've been in the service industry myself and know what's it like to be "that" person. However, they were super nice, super friendly, helped my folks with the menu and even brought the food out to my car once it was ready. I was so totally impressed. Not to mention, my Dad said the roast beef sub was one of the best he's ever had...he knows his roast beefs. All in all an amazing family-friendly soup/salad/sammy spot in the Arboretum area. Yep, disappointing. Sucky even. Was in the neighborhood (way far from my part of town) and was hungry. Newk's is a chain counter service sandwich/pizza/salad joint. Stopped here for a sandwich, side salad, ice tea and brownie. All was pretty mediocre and flava-free (tea was about the best) and the bill was $12.35 - not cheap (Thunderclouds would be $9 and better). The person who brought my food was nice but the order taker at the counter was kinda rude. The women next to me were having a business meeting (!) and cussing like sailors. Won't be back. read more

We were on our way to Trader's Joe and decided to stop for a quite bite. I got the club sandwich and my fiance had shrimp and avocado salad. First the good: The sides were very good! I had coleslaw with my sandwich and, unlike in many places, the salad was not 50% mayo. The vegetables were clearly all fresh and sauce was light, but still have great taste. Definitely 5/5. The sandwich was good, but nothing special. While it was prepared well I was somewhat underwhelmed by the meal. The portion was a good size, but the sandwich was not unique. I had only tried one, so maybe some of their other choices would leave a more memorable impression. The bad: The avocado on the salad was not ripe enough. They should have left it for another day or so. The salad itself was good as was the dressing (like the coleslaw - light and refreshing) but when one of the main ingredients is not up to par it leaves you wanting. Overall, I am torn between giving this place 3 or 4 stars. I think it is somewhere in the middle, but since our experience was not that memorable I gave it 3. We only had 2 dishes and given some of the good points I think Newk's probably has some other good choices. read more

Adam is the number one reason to visit Newk's, but there are a number of other great reasons, including the food. He is friendly, courteous and makes Newk's feel like a second home. My kids adore him and they actively seek him out when we visit so they can give him a hug. My 6 y/o has requested Newk's for her birthday dinner two years in a row! This restaurant is not fancy (you order at a counter and they bring you your food) but the food is excellent for the price point, the serving size generous and the atmosphere always friendly (and the restaurant very clean). I almost always order the "Newk's favorite" salad with shrimp instead of chicken. Delicious, filling and doesn't break the bank. Standard kid fare served tastefully (a small cast iron pan for the Mac and cheese). Wine and beer available as well. The restaurant's name is a bit odd, phonetically, esp for those of us who grew up in the Cold War era. Disregard the name - go for the opportunity to hang out with Adam and eat really good food. This was the weirdest experience. I and my friend ordered online for pickup and went over to the sign labeled "Pick up". We were abruptly stopped by the employees, when attempting to walk to the sign, and they then started asking us what our names were. Not anything bad with the employees helping, but why even have the "Pick up" sign if you're just going to be annoyed at us for walking to it? The food was okay but the experience soon got weirder. We had multiple things of trash to throw away, but could not find trash anywhere inside, or outside. What place with indoor and outdoor seating doesn't have a trash indoor or outdoors? While searching inside, we found trash by the bathroom. There was no other trash in sight, so it was our only choice. We were then awkwardly approached by one of the employees from earlier. He told us that he would have rather taken the trash to the back for us and that trash is for the bathroom (when it isn't even in the bathroom), or we could have opted to leave the trash on the table. So were we supposed to read the employee's mind in knowing he would take our trash to the back? Were we supposed to just break every moral code we have learned and leave our trash for someone else to clean? It was such an uncomfortable experience and this place definitely needs to invest in trash cans so this doesn't happen again. read more
