The food is awesome ... when they get the order right! My friend (who introduced me to this place) and I play Russian Roulette whenever we come, placing bets on whether they'll get our orders right. Nine times out of 10 it's not right. So I get it that I'm not ordering my salad the way it comes, but it should be fairly simple to remove some ingredients and add others. Just arrived in Austin and staying at the Renaissance hotel. Looked for a place to have a quick bite with varied menu ( 17 year olds in tow) and found Newk's !!! Food was fresh and delicious .., the boys had pizza and we had a chicken salad sandwich with a bleu and black salad ... Erica took our order and served us ... She was delightful and made the experience even more enjoyable. Would definitely return to sample more. read more

I go to Newk's periodically since I frequent the Arboretum. The restaurant itself is rather unassuming, but that's exactly what I like about it. It's a perfect place if you just want to eat in a quiet and relaxed environment. And the food is pretty good, too, and priced reasonably. My favorite items are their shrimp po-boy sandwich and shrimp remoulade salad. (I don't know what they do to the shrimp to make it taste so good, but it's amazing!) These dishes are also pretty big; the remoulade salad itself comes with a ton of shrimp and eggs, and is more than enough for its price. I read couple of somewhat negative reviews regarding customer service. While I understand that everyone's experience is different, I find the staff to be incredibly nice. I have gone to Newk's a few times to eat and work on my laptop, sometimes at really late hours just as they're getting ready to close, and they've always been really sweet. And lastly, I really enjoy the entire atmosphere and vibe of the whole place. It's just so comfortable to sit there and eat on a Sunday afternoon with a friend. Not sure what the fuss is about. It's a decent salad and sandwich place, but nothing special. The facility on an early Friday evening was messy (tables and floors). It wasn't busy. The condiment table was a nice feature and we liked the grissini style breadsticks. The staff were polite but nothing remarkable. The Mac and cheese was quite good because of its creamy texture and crunchy baked top and it was served nice and hot. The steak sandwich and original salad were OK but nothing special. If you read other yelpers reviews of this sandwich joint that also offers soups, salads, and pizzas, you could surmise that I came here on a off day. Don't think so. Of the 14 sandwiches offered, I ordered the Italian with a bag of chips. Rough $8. My sandwich was absolutely disgusting. The bread wasn't all the way done, so, it left it a little gummy. Please compare the picture of this sandwich on their web site to the one I took. Big difference. When you're eating an Italian sandwich, you expect to be able to enjoy several flavors from the onion, to the different meats, to the cheese, to the dressing and peppers. Not here baby, you get one very dominate flavor; KRAFT Italian Salad Dressing! I was able to choke down two bites of this disgusting pathetic shit they call an Italian sandwich. Gross waste of $8. I would have fared better at subway. As for the other foods in there? I wasn't impressed with anything I saw other people noshing on. All the pizza's I saw looked average at best. Look you guys. I consider myself an expert when it comes to Mac n Cheese. Like, I'm kindof a snob about it. This pimento + bacon Mac will MESS YOU UP. in the best way possible. I had a side order of it with my sandwich and thought, "JEEZ I want 17 bowls of this immediately!" Speaking of the sandwich, I had a Pesto (which was great - you can never go wrong with Pesto) - it was overshadowed by the Mac n Cheese, but I am confident that I would be raving about it if I wasn't so focused on the Mac. I like this place! Thanks to Yelper's reviews and bookmarking, I decided to stop by for lunch on my way home from work yesterday. What first struck me as totally awesome was the nutritional info on the website. There it was in writing what my little left shoulder angel was telling me, that the Italian sammie, chock full of salty meats, was calorie dense. Take that Mr. But-It-Tastes-So-Good right shoulder devil! Get thee behind me (for now :)! There were many healthier, just as tasty options to choose from (one warning: the calories listed are for half sandwiches! they offer several half sammie options, like half sammie/soup, etc). So I went in with a plan. I ordered the half chicken pesto sandwich and a bowl of chicken and dumplings soup and a water, for $7.75. I was very nicely directed to the water station and invited to check out the condiments table. This place is a scavenger's dream! I noticed next to the ice water was several kinds of coffee (if you're into that). Then I checked out the condiments table. It was loaded down with capers (yeah, capers! have you bought those before??? like $5 for a tiny jar), pickled peppers, spices, oils, pepper sauces, pickles, crunchy bread sticks, and parmesan. Just for luxury's sake, I got a ton of capers and some pickled peppers to put on my sammie. Then I wandered over to the tea and soda section and found gargantuan lemon slices for my tea. I took my haul back to my table and soon after, my food was delivered. First off, the soup was pretty good. It had a very herby broth and carrots and these odd tiny dumplings, kinda like oyster crackers. Coulda used more chicken tho. Eh, I still ate every drop. The sandwich had thinly sliced chicken breast and bell peppers and goat cheese and, of course, pesto. I loaded it up with my capers and peppers. While it was good, the goat cheese kinda overpowered all the other flavors. Well, that and the peppers. I even tried a little chicken by itself to be sure, and yeah, it was kinda bland. But maybe that's just chicken (and probably why it's better for you than, say salami and capicolla and pepperoni, damn it!). Overall, tho, I liked what I ate and it was a perfectly portioned light lunch. I look forward to going back and trying their salads. While wandering around, I looked at the food prep area and they had huge bowls of fresh spring greens for salads, not the nasty iceburg as I had feared. So I will definitely go back for that, and then I can load it up with all the extras I've scavenged. I probably like Newk's a little more than I should. It's basically a nicer, yuppier version of Jason's Deli. See the thing is, they offer some of my favorite foods: pizza, soup, salads, sandwiches and macaroni and cheese! Simple stuff, with an amazing condiment bar. I've tried the macaroni, the pimento cheese sandwich, cesar salad, and the vegetarian club. All great and keep me coming back. The combos are my favorite: half salad with half a sandwich, or a half salad with mac n cheese. The soups change daily, and usually one of the two is vegetarian. They focus heavily on big meat salads. Straightforward stuff here, from a relatively large chain and their only location in Austin. read more

Newk's is a decent choice for catering. I see my share of "catered" business lunches, and it's generally Jason's Deli, bbq, Jimmy John's, fajitas, or pizza, and I don't eat pizza. Newk's is the only one that feels slightly more "catered" than "delivered" -- pricier, but the sandwiches are at least as good and more varied, the desserts were nice-looking cake slices, the fruit salad wasn't all melon, and there were a couple platters of vegetables and peeled shrimp with cocktail sauce. They also bring in a lot of black plastic serving utensils and tumblers if you buy drinks. I'm not saying it's a flavor explosion, but it was a welcome upgrade from the shriveled pepperoncini from the pizza box, all I'd eat when it was pizza. This business is absolutely amazing!! It was my first time dining at Newks and I'm in love with the concept. Everything about it puts the customer in mind. The food is phenomenal, but on top of that, you can dress it up with your favorite toppings and customize it as you like. I loved this, because I always order extra cheese and croutons on my salad at other places, but here I didn't have to do that, I was able to fix it just how I liked it. Quality food for sure!!! Somehow Newk's seems to be a place that's constantly crowded, yet no one ever talks about it. Apparently, the regulars at Newk's Eatery move in different circles than I do but I'm happy to say I've joined their ranks during lunch today! I got lunch at Newk's with a friend. It was hard to find seating, not because there isn't enough, but because there are so many people! Order at the counter, get a number and sit down - classic mix between sit down and fast food. It took about 7 minutes between walking in the door and getting our food. The pesto chicken sandwich was good - not WOWing but solidly yummy. The fruit cup was purely pineapple and like two grapes. That's fine, I like pineapple. Just FYI. My friend got the pimento cheese sandwich. We didn't talk about his feelings about the food, but he ate all of it in two seconds. So it was probably delicious. From my perspective, it looked great...the cheese was oozing off the crispy french bread and forming in pools on the plate. That's exactly what I would want from a hot cheese sandwich. Our lunch total with two sandwiches and water was $15. Not great, not bad. There were a lot of other delicious menu items I was eyeing on the tables around me. I'll be back for sure! read more

Newks has the only club sandwich that's badass enough to be in the club even though it doesn't have a middle bread and isn't cut into small triangles with toothpicks stuck in them. The addition of honey mustard to the club sandwich's normal fixings is an absolute next-level sandwich maneuver. First sandwich I tried at Newks and each time I go back, I have to order it cause it's so damn delicious! One day I'll try something else there... Soups are underwhelming. I've had the lobster bisque and the tomato basil... both were decent, but kinda weak and generally lackluster. The salads look pretty awesome (and I hate salad so that's saying something), so if you're looking for a side I'd probably steer that direction. Although easy to overlook, the drink system at Newks is really cool. Drinks are available in one size: gigantic. They also have Coke Zero, which is a plus. Try mixing 3:1 Coke Zero with Dr. Pepper. A kinda diet drink that tastes great. Parking lot is a nightmare. Not the business's fault, but you have been warned... This shopping center is full of women who are clones of Lucille from Arrested Development all trying to cram into some of the smallest parking spots in Austin. It's almost easier to park across the street and walk over. Prices border on expensive, but the food is worth it. read more

So we are shopping in the Domain, kids are crying they are hungry. What do I do? Go to my go-go-gadget Yelp app. This pulls up, not to far down the road. Decided to give it a try. One of the better choices I made that day (yes those pants I bought at H&M did make my butt look big, but thats another story) We arrive and you can already tell its a family kind of joint. The inviting letting, the candy cane awning, just looks friendly and family oriented. Pizza, subs, salad, and soup. Something for anyones hankering. Kids meals were a small pizza and a drink for 4.50. Same price you would pay for a crappy "kids meal" at the drive by places. Fantastic. Wife and myself go with pizzas and I get a side soup. We sit, have our numbers up,and wait. While we are waiting I notic everyone eating thise really skinny long things, I ask a server and he grabs us some. Some "breadsitck" type things, they were awesome lol think the kids ate more of those then actually pizza. Nice way to get something to snack while you wait, crackerish almost. We are looking for them at costco next time, but anyways. I ordered the Margheritaand I wife had the Deluxe, kids pepperonis. All of those were great, loved everything about them. My soup however was missing something, just wasn't right, odd tasting, maybe it was an off day for that, I had ordered the Lobster Crab Bisque and it wasn't pleasing to me. They happily swapped it out for the Tomato Basil, and man, am I glad they did. Heaven in a bowl. I loved it, creamy, flavorful, it hit the spot. That one spot that only a nice creamy tomato soup on a chilly day can do. Was great, period. Overall I am super happy we strayed over and tried it out. Newk's has been in Alabama for years and on my short list for lunch places about that long. Things I love at Newk's: - The round table full of goodies like bread and butter pickles, crunchy breadsticks, banana peppers, capers and roasted garlic. - Splenda Sweet Tea served in a big plastic to-go cup with gigantic lemon wedges. Lemon tea tastes like summer to me. (Unsweet and Regular Sugar Tea are available too.) - The Newk's Q with white barbeque sauce. You Texas barbeque purists should give it a try. Just once. - The sherry vinaigrette dressing and how they toss the salads with the dressing instead of serving it on the side. Look - I don't want to over-sell it. It's a great lunch place, especially for groups with kids or those of us that stay in a rush during the week, but it's no Wink. It's better-than-average lunch fare for a reasonable price. read more

My first experience at Newks was a pleasant one. I told the guy I had never been and asked for some recommendations. He told me some of the popular items and some things he liked. I opted for the Shrimp Po'Boy with a side of fresh fruit. He also gave me some additional information such as beverage station, condiments, and he let me know to leave my plate at the table as someone would pick it up. I appreciate his friendliness and help. When my food arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the fruit salad. It wasn't the same old tired fruit cup which is about 50% cantaloupe, which I can't stand, by the way. The fruit cup had pineapple, red grapes, and watermelon. The sandwich was only okay. The shrimp were grilled and tasted good. The bread was delicious. On the bread though, was a tomato, lettuce, and pickle. Personally, I would have preferred something like cole slaw on there. Next time I might just order the slaw as my side and make adjustments. It was served with cocktail sauce. It was a pleasant experience at Newks and I will not hesitate to visit again when I am in the area. read more

Great salads and pretty good sandwiches too. The food all tastes really fresh. Best item on the menu? The Black and Bleu Salad (it has mixed greens, steak, red onions, gorgonzola cheese, and pecans with bleu cheese dressing- mmmm)! They are really fast if you go to the express window so if you're in a crunch during the lunchtime rush you can count of Newk's being able to get you back to work on time. Best Salad I have found in Austin. Period. Do you ever have a meal where you finish off one item and you wish you had more of it even though you have other really delicious items to eat? This happens to me every time I come to Newk's and get the salad and sandwich combo. No matter if I finish my salad or my sandwich first I want more of them. They have the best Caesar salad I have ever had in a restaurant. Seriously it is so good I have driven from South Austin for it. You really just have to try it. The ultimate salad is insanity. It is what happens if you let a 12 year old free on a salad bar. It has 3 types of meat and every veggie available, and take it from me it is the perfect blend. I have modified it in the past by taking off certain items and the salad just isn't the same, but be prepared this thing is massive. I also hate Honey Mustard dressing but the way they make it maintains the bite of the mustard. I actually used the leftover dressing to dip my roast beef sandwich in. Awesome. The dressings here are the unsung hero though. I have tried 2 vinaigrette's, the Caesar dressing and the before mentioned honey mustard. All of them were made in house and have an over the top flavor. I have only had the roast beef sandwich and a bite of the grilled steak sandwich but man are they good. These actually taste homemade. This is a great spot. It's casual, but well-kept. You order at the counter, where there is very friendly service. You can get a glass of wine if you want. The salads and sandwiches are excellent (haven't tried the pizza). The pickle / breadstick / condiment bar has a cornucopia of delights to sample - try the garlic. Prices are excellent and portions are healthy (not in the "slim" sense of the word). Some places, you can tell that the management is on top of things. A place that is constantly turning tables, has a busy condiment bar, and doesn't have a waitstaff can easily turn into a nasty mess. I was happily surprised that they had splenda-sweetened ice tea! I came around 1pm on a Sunday afternoon. There wasn't a line so I surveyed the land and decided it would be a good place to stay a while. I went back to the car and got my notebook, and when I got back the line was almost out the door. After my friend introduced me to Newks last fall, we went at least once a week for like 2~3 months straight. Sometimes multiple trips in a single day! My goal was to try everything on their menu and I'm still working on it. I've had the majority of all their sandwiches and soups. It's just great. I think what I like most about the sandwiches is that they are put together really well. Most sandwiches fall apart when you take a bite, but at Newks, everything stays put. Also, the toasted bread is a very nice touch. The soups are all great. And they are in large bowls! I hate places where you get half sandwich and half soup and it's basically a kids meal. At Newks, you can get full on a 1/2 and 1/2. The soups are just nice, thick and hardy. There is good substance to them. The service is always great too. The food comes out fast! You think that quality would suffer, but that's not the case. The kitchen is open, so you can watch them make the food too. There are so many sandwich place out there. I used to think all sandwiches were the same. But Newks just does it right. If you want a good meal to start with, I recommend the Chicken Salad sandwich and the Lobster Crab Bisque. Newks is definitely a 4.5 rating. I reserve 5 stars for the elite, but Newks is top notch for sure. read more

Welcome to Austin, Newk's! A friend brought me to Newk's Express Cafe yesterday for the first time and I was very impressed. Newk's has a very nice balance, quick, but not fast-food, casual, and very comfortable. They get an A+ for presentation, quality and customer service. I had a Cobb Salad that was beautiful and tasted everybit as good! My friend had the Ceasar Salad which also looked very nice. Newk's has nice touches, like a "Roundtable" of extra fresh ingredients and breadsticks for your salad, and ice-cold fresh water (you don't have to get it out of the soda fountain!) I want to go back a few more times to explore the menu a bit further. It seemed that it might be slightly limited, but I'm sure I can find other things to enjoy. You'll be seeing plenty of Newk's in Austin. We spoke to the staff and they told us that there were plans for 7 more to open in the area. Special Grand Opening this weekend! Saturday June 5, 2010 from 10:00-1:00. Sounds like a lot of fun, plus some VIP guests and food specials. I'm planning on going! Tried Newk's today and was less than impressed. All three of the pizzas we got were very bready. There was no crispiness to them at all. If asked how the soup or macaroni was all we could say was "eh it's alright". Macaroni got cold very quickly. And soup tastes like it is straight out of a can. Newks is really good. Not a large variety but high quality. I typically get a full Caesar. I always add peppers and roasted garlic to it. I sometimes get a salad and 1/2 sandwich. The Pimento Cheese sandwich is possibly the best meatless sandwich on the this planet. Its bread, pimento cheese, tomato, and perhaps a slice of cheese toasted. It gets all melty and gooey. I always add jalapenos to mine. I would recommend this place for lunch....not sure about supper though. read more

I have eaten here about 6 times. I really enjoy it. I love that you can grab a yummy sandwich and a beer or pizza and a glass of Merlot and yet it's a bit casual. I love eating outside. Their fresh made circulate brownies are the best I have ever had. Tonight I guess they were taking a bit long on the pizza, per the manager ( although my husband and I didn't even notice). The manager Jennifer came out and apologized and offered us some cake or something. We went for the brownie. She can back with 2 for us and he pizza followed shortly. Very proactive, I was impressed.
