Ahhh.....Nathan's...... I finally made it back to this Coney Island hot dog institution and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I had been here once before in the early 1990's and don't remember much. This visit I took lots of photos and will remember it. I had a Chili Cheese Dog, my wife had the Bacon Cheese Dog and we split a half order of Onion Rings. I had a small Coney Island Mermaid beer and my wife had a lemonade. I really love these inexpensive but good restaurants, especially when they have been around since 1916! I love the old style signage and storefront awnings and it's great location right on the corner at the entrance to the rides. Our food was good and I especially loved the first bite snap of the hot dog and the onion rings which were fried perfectly. The food is great comfort style food and not too expensive. I would love to be here on Independence Day when they have their annual hot dog eating contest. Probably quite a crowd here then. This place is worth the stop when you see any Nathan's but especially the original at 1310 Surf Ave in Brooklyn (cool address!). read more

One side is dedicated to serving the usual fare you find at all the regular Nathan's franchises: hot dogs and fries. The line was practically empty. On the other side, you have seafood??? Steamed clams and crabs. The line was long and packed with people. Unfortunately, I was in a hurry, so I had to settle for the hot dogs. While on vacation we had to stop here. Nathan's Famous hotdogs are called "famous" for a reason. My dad is a huge fan. He watches the hot dog eating contest almost every year on television. With exception to the last couple years because of the pandemic. Since he's a big fan, this was a must on our itinerary. Both myself and my mom are vegetarians, so we weren't really excited about this place, because there's little to no vegetarian options. We basically came here for my dad to get a couple hot dogs. He ordered the original hot dog and said they were the best hot dogs he's ever had. He also ordered fries and my mom and myself ate those. The fries were yummy. Can't go wrong with those. Overall, if you are a hot dog fan, then Nathan's Famous is for you. They have burgers on the menu also incase you don't like hot dogs. I'm in no place to agree or disagree with the complaints about the vegan dog, chicken sandwich, avocado toast or other non-core items. The Oreo milkshake was honestly just vanilla ice cream with Oreo pieces I wouldn't even consider it a milkshake I couldn't even use a straw because of how thick it was and it was just ice cream. This is the original Nathan's on the corner of Stilwell and Surf in Coney Island! I highly recommend it, even if you go for the history. According to Nathan's, it all started in 1916 when a Polish immigrant named Nathan Handwerker had his hot dog stand in Coney Island. He sold hotdogs for a nickel back then! His wife used her special secret recipe, and everyone loved them! Even today, they have a hot dog eating contest in the summer. Imagine eating 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes! It's amazing! Took a walk over to Nathan's after meeting up with my wife in Coney Island. There are now three ordering zones with many registers in each zone. The zone furthest east has the full menu. The zone in the middle has a limited menu with hotdogs, sides, and drinks. There are self ordered tablets on the west side of the restaurant near the outdoor seating where you can only order hot dogs. They've got efficiency figured out. They have some new items. Some old items. We decided to get some hot dogs. Only saw the six inch option, so we got two. Also got an order of cheese fries. Accompanied the food with a couple beers brewed by nearby Coney Island Brewery. Everything was good. Inflation has definitely hit Nathan's though. read more

This is an iconic historical site that should be visited if you are visiting Brooklyn. Try and visit during the 4th of July hot dog eating contest. I grew up visiting Coney Island often and eating at Nathan's as a kid and visiting Nathan's brought back so many great memories. I ordered a hot dog with sauerkraut and it was very good. Got to finally try the famous Nathan's Hot Dog in Coney Island! The lines were very long to order but we saw a dedicated kiosk for hot dog express so we hopped into that line to order! We got our food pretty fast and snagged a table as well. What we ordered: - Bacon Cheese Hot Dog with sauerkraut, onions and relish - Classic Hot Dog with onions and relish - Bacon Cheese Fries - Onion Rings Overall the meal was solid and hit the spot if you're craving boardwalk type of food. Nathan's is a global brand for hot dogs nowadays, so when you come here, you'll find swarms of people lining up for their piece of the share! Our wait on a Sunday wasn't too bad though. We had a bacon cheese dog, and a chili cheese dog. Since Nathan's is sold everywhere now, I didn't get the wow factor perse, but eating a Nathan's hot dog anywhere is always a good time IMO. Hot dogs will run you about $5, which isn't bad for a touristy spot. They have plenty of outdoor seating, or you can opt to eat it on the boardwalk while enjoying the beautiful landscape. P.S. THE ONE AND ONLY ORIGINAL NATHAN'S FAMOUS. If there is anything that represents New York, in terms of food, Nathan's Famous is at or close to the top of that list. Nothing says New York quite like a hot dog and not just any hot dog, but New York's own Nathan's Famous. OK, yeah you can find Nathan's in numerous places these days and the prices can be absurd for an original hot dog ($4.75) with nothing on it. In addition, honestly, the frozen ones you can buy at a market are just as good for a fraction of the price, but if you're into the experience of visiting the original location, then by all means go for it and make a day out of it at the boardwalk too. However, besides just hot dogs, Nathan's has a very wide menu of other items, like burgers, sandwiches, tenders, chicken wings, but who are you kidding? You're here for a dang hot dog .. and probably some of their famous crinkle cut fries! And if you don't want a plain hot dog, they have a collection of numerous Heinz condiments right outside, including your everyday ketchup, mustard, radish and mayo. In addition, they also sell cheese dogs, chili cheese dogs and corn dogs on a stick, if you're into any of them. And the same goes for your crinkle cut fries that can be topped with cheese, chili cheese or even bacon cheese. As for seating, there are outdoor tables shaded by umbrellas to the side of the institution. For first-timers, just be prepared for the waits, especially in the summer. It oozes with history from the unique menu (weird seafood options at a Hot Dog place?!) to the vintage neon to the people watching of all the unique "characters" in the area. Expect decently long lines if you go during summer or a weekend and service is somewhat questionable but it's fast food at the end of the day, so what do you expect. We love going to Coney Island just for Nathan's deliciousness. Nathan's should be a national treasure. It's deserving of true accolades for consistently having outstanding food, staff, and guests. As always we get a dozen of clams on the half shell with a beer. The garnishing - horseradish, lemon, cocktail sauce, Tabasco sauce and crackers makes for wonderful eats. If you go to Coney Island and didn't get a Nathan's hot dog, did you really go to Coney Island? My first trip to Coney Island, I knew I had to visit the original Nathan's Famous location. As soon as you exit the subway, the building is right there facing you. We went on a Sunday so it was super crowded with tourists but service was great. Inside the building there are multiple lines so the wait doesn't end up being long. The person you order with is also the person that gets your food so once you pay, you just stand there and wait as they prep your order. I had to go all out for my first time at Nathan's. I got the original dog of course, onion rings and fries and a large coke. The large coke was quite the large coke. My cousin also get their chilli cheese fries which I would also recommend. Prices are decent and service was friendly so ambiance on point. There are tables right outside for you to enjoy your hot dog, just beware of the seagulls, they are savage! When my friends and I decided to go to Coney Island, I made up my mind that I absolutely HAD to get a hotdog from the original Nathan's. The actually spot is pretty cool and from across the street looks very alluring. It's HUGE and is impossible to miss! It's surrounded with crowds of people who are eager to eat at this token place. That being said, that's about all Nathan's has going for it. Once you step inside, it's more like being at a theme park. There are about 20 different lines, the cashiers look like they absolutely hate hot dogs and people who eat them, and the prices are absolutely INSANE. The hot dogs were extremely small and for $6 a pop, I was more than dissatisfied. I also ordered a large chili cheese fries to share, and the portion was similar to a McDonald's dollar size. The best part? On the coney island boardwalk they have Nathan hot dog stands with no lines and the same food. Take pictures , step inside, then step right out to find a better food joint. Yeah, it's Nathan's, nothing else matters here but the hot dog and fries, and that's perfectly fine. I've always been a great fan of the Nathan's crinkle cut fries. So much so that I'd buy the frozen ones from the supermarket and try to make them at home. Until I learned making them at home required far too much effort. The fries from home were always slightly less then the ones from Nathan's themselves. The crinkles in these fries always do well to scoop up whatever extras Nathan's has, be it bacon, chili, or the melted cheese. The same deal goes for these dogs, if there is ever a place to have a dog, this would be it. The regular plain dogs had a nice crisp exterior and nice saltiness. If condiments is what you desire, they have it all here at Nathan's. The melted cheese is a perfect consistency and the chili is hearty for a additional cost. The sautéed onions are a little sweet and sauerkraut is available upon request when ordering. Everything else, ketchup and mustard are available after you get your order. The lemonade was more sweet than tart, exactly how I like it. The beer battered onion rings weren't crispy and aren't a must order. Stick with the favorites and you should be ok. Outside of the food, the service is always comically disorganized, payment was inefficient, there is no one keeping the seating area tidy and finally there isn't enough seating. On my most recent visit, a manager without food service gloves touching food, food preparers had to step carefully around a huge water spill to fill sodas, the ice cube scoop dropped on the floor, my CC payment had to be processed twice,... if I had a seat it would be funny to watch. But whatever, its Coney Island, and sometimes you've just got to accept what you get from a dinosaur like Nathan's. read more

Busy as I don't know what. Be patient, there is two areas to order. Self order or talk to person. I tried Self order but there was no fish sandwich on it. I had to move over to the Talk to a Person line/queue. From there I order the fish sandwich and 3 hot dogs. I can tell you eveything was fresh. These are not the store bought Nathan's at all. These hotdogs are so fresh I think they make them there at the store. I wanted to take some uncooked ones home to have for later. This is a great place to check out if you are in the area. Nathan's Famous is a hot dog restaurant that opened in Brooklyn, New York in 1916. It was founded by Nathan Handwerker: a Polish-Jewish immigrant who arrived in New York City in 1916. Although Nathan's Famous would eventually morph into an international fast food restaurant chain with over 1,400 locations, the original location still stands in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn. Most historians agree that the first Coney Island hotdog stand was started by German immigrant Charles Feltman in 1867. By the turn of the century, he'd gone upscale, with Feltman's German Gardens: a huge complex of restaurants and beer gardens on Surf Avenue that employed 1,200 waiters. The original Coney Island location is also the only location that serves Frog Legs. I am a little embarrassed to admit it but I had never actually eaten a Nathan's hotdog before.
