Chili Cheese Dog with homemade serrano hot sauce, Chicago Dog (below)
    Zinat M.

Quite literally, a fantastic option on a 'dog day afternoon', or any day you wish really. I decided to explore this quaint part of my borough on a pleasant end of summer day, looking to get the Chicago dog. Left with that, a chili cheese dog, and some vintage one of a kind vinyl records that I was NOT expecting to score at a hot dog joint. A house made serrano chili sauce was also part the meal. It wasn't too hot, and complemented the chili cheese dog well. The chili tasted really good, had a nice smoke. It was a tad bit salty for me, but overall a classic flavor with the cheese sauce. The dogs were for home. They traveled well. The snap was formidable. The bread married perfectly , and held the toppings well- very important! The taste hit, and smacked. I was happy! The chef, gem of a guy. Had nice relaxed banter about the food and the vinyls. There's some seating outside in front, but with Prospect Park steps away, bring a picnic blanket and you're set.

I love hot dogs. I didn't really check out the menu before going. My brother and I went a few weeks ago. It's a small place with a small menu. They have a table and picnic table outside. I had a chili cheese dog which was good and I was feeling adventurous so I tried the Chicago dog. I'm not a fan. The hot dogs were tasty. Each hotdog comes with a bag of chips which is cool. The guy inside was super nice and he delivered our food to us. If I was walking by and got a hankering for a hot dog, I'd definitely get the chili one again.

    My delicious Vegan Dog

If you've watched Dog Day Afternoon, you know Al Pacino robs a bank to pay for his friend, John Cazale's surgery.. In my "movie" I'd rob it to get infinite amounts of Vegan hot dogs at Dog Day Afternoon. The last vegan hot dog I had literally was in Chicago( The Clark Street Dog) and it was delicious, the quality tasted like "beef. I was in search of that same deliciousness and Dog Day did it!!! The Highlights: The Vegan dog: comes Chicago style grilled with tomato, mustard, relish, onions, pickle, hot peppers, and seasoned with celery salt. Scrumptious! Menu: Dog Day uses Vienna Beef hot dogs, Chicago quality here folks. Soda pop!!! I love it! Ambience: Nostalgic, kitschy, pin ball machine, and cute tchotchkes placed all over. I love the photos on the wall! The owner: Jay is terrific, great personality. We talked about so many things: From The Bear, to good eats in Bay Ridge, Prospect Park, etc. A restaurant could have great food but when it has a great owner, it's a standout Dog Day Afternoon, the movie, premiered 50 years ago this summer. I said to Jay, it would be great if Pacino visited and had a hot dog! Here is Dog Day Afternoon, restaurant, bio: "A legendary, regional dish that has finally busted out of the confines of the Windy City and made its way to the Concrete Jungle. Step aside NYC slice, outta the way chopped cheese, I'm walkin' here bacon egg and cheese, because the Chicago dog is here to change the foodie landscape of Brooklyn one hungry person at a time." If you want a taste of the Windy City in Brooklyn, this is it! Dog Day Afternoon is located on 266 Prospect Park West between Windsor and Howard Place. Take F train to 15 Street Prospect Park, 5 minute walk. Hey, if you do bump into Pacino on the F train, he might need directions!

Being that today is National Hot Dog Day, how can I not stop in one of Brooklyn's best hot dog stands and try one of these out? I took a risk coming here, because since I live so close to Nathan's, I can go there anytime. This little stand in Windsor Terrace? Not so much. Before I "trample through the garden" with this review, I have been to Chicago - twice. I have eaten my share of Chicago style hot dogs. As a result, I do have some skin in the game when it comes to eating Chicago style hot dogs. -- I ordered three hot dogs, plus an Italian Beef sandwich, and a milkshake. The total is pretty high, but that is New York City for you. If I had gotten all of this in Chicago, I am pretty sure I would have gotten this whole feast for $10-$15 cheaper. Oh well. First thing is they offer a club card. Each hot dog you get, gets you one step closer to a free one. On the 10th hot dog, it is theirs to buy. The interior is retro, but gimmicky. I wanted to like it but it felt forced with the one Pac-Man arcade machine, all the VHS tapes, and all the late 80's to early 90's paraphernalia. Another restaurant, Ace Pizza in Williamsburg, made it feel like a welcome nostalgia trip. This is too in your face for my liking, and I lived through the 90's. Okay, how about those wieners? The food comes out pretty fast, but that is to be expected. Hot dogs if done right should take no more than 10 minutes to go from grill to table. The first two hot dogs I ordered, the Chicago style ones, are spot on authentic. Good poppyseed bun, they use Vienna Beef (that is the authentic Chicago style hot dog brand), excellent use of the vegetables, and good snap and resistance from the hot dog itself. It stands as a reasonable homage to their Windy City brethren. The next dog, the Chili Dog, is a disappointment. Too messy, and in one bite your clothes are ruined because it starts to fall apart after one bite. I love a good chili dog, but this one overdoes it. It reminds me of Pink's Hot Dogs in Los Angeles. Who is supposed to be the star? The Italian Beef, while not a hot dog, is a Chicago staple in its own right. While I enjoyed the soaked roll, and the tasty beef, the Giardiniera (hot pickled veggies), lacked. It needs more of a push to get it over the hump. It gets to the top, but then stalls out. As for the milkshake, it is creamy, fresh, and authentic. Maybe they should look to Portillo's and get that chocolate cake shake. Or not. I would weigh 500 pounds if they ever bring that here. -- The experience is fun and cute. The cashier is cute and genuine. She has good knowledge of the menu despite never being to Chicago (points lost there - just kidding). If the hot dog stand only focuses on Chicago style hot dogs, puts some duck fat fries on the menu (please...), and lowers their prices, this review could be seeing a higher rating. For now, it settles as a 4/5. However, the Chicago style hot dogs will have me back for that freebie.

From top to bottom is the Chili Dog, Chicago Snap Dog and Frito Pie. So good!!!!!!!!

My son out of nowhere asked for a chili cheese dog. Which he has never had. But because I was hungry I agreed to getting it. I looked up the nearest spot and this place was listed with great reviews. We waited until they opened and placed an order. First off the decor is super cute and nostalgic. Now as far as the food goes.......My god I'm happy I went. I ordered the chili cheese dog for my son and the Chicago style for myself plus the frito pie. We ate and neither of us left any crumbs lol. Everything was soooo good and fresh. Super tasty and I am definitely going to visit again. It was worth every dime and more.

Spicy Italian hotdog and regular hotdog.

Nice staff, nice seating area, decent price and their hotdogs are delicious! I ordered a spicy Italian hotdog and was pleasantly surprised it's got Jalapeño peppers on it. Tastes so good! My son loves his regular hotdog too. Highly recommended!

Short answer 10 out of 10 would recommend. Now for the long response. While on vacation to NYC my girlfriend and I decided to go on the hunt for a delicious hotdog and we were not disappointed. After a bit of a search through Reddit we came across multiple locations but by luck this one was chosen. After a 45 minute subway ride and a small walk we nearly walked past the entrance of Dog Day Afternoon. We got inside and the man behind the counter was extremely nice and helpful recommending to us what he thought were their best hotdogs. A few minutes later we received them and oh my they were delicious. The Chicago hot dog tasted super fresh and full of flavor while the yellow peppers added a bit of kick to take it over the top without being over powering. The chili cheese dog as my girlfriend described "perfection". She was too busy stuffing her face to give a more detailed explanation but I believe it still covers it. Next time we come back for vacation this will definitely be a stop on our list.

I stumbled across this establishment while doing a Yelp search. My sister and I love Hot Dogs so we decided to try this place. We ordered the Chicago Hot Dog and French Fries. Everything was well prepared and delicious. The waiter was very nice and friendly. Our order didn't take long. It was a busy Sunday afternoon and the establishment is small so most of the customers were waiting outside for their orders. I enjoyed my hot dog and I'll definitely be back soon to try other items on the menu.

Perfect weekend afternoon snack after a park day with the dog. The staff was super friendly and welcoming to us first-timers. They even had a treat for our (not so little) pup! We ordered the Frito pie, Chicago dog, and chili cheese dog, a sampling of the classics. Grabbed a table outside to sit with the dog and watch the people go by. Service was very quick. Don't forget to grab your bag of chips!

Another place with a cool name and cool food. Dog Day Afternoon is an interesting place. It should be checked out even if you aren't getting any food because the movie was shot across the street. Cool thing to know about it. The food is the other big highlight, and even forgetting about the movie it's good too. It has a menu obviously of hot dogs. Order them in Chicago style, a chili dog, or Polish sausage. They also have one that's vegan. Maybe it's kind of expensive. That's the only bad thing. Chicago style is $6, chili dogs are $7, and it's $8 for the vegan hot dog. These are big though. Get whatever you want on the vegan hot dog. I got it Chicago style with the mustard and peppers. The other options weren't vegan of course so the choice is easy for this. Also they have fries. There's not a lot of room inside so many carry it out. A quick walk between the large green spaces in Brooklyn. It's on Prospect Park West between Green-Wood Cemetery and Prospect Park. The park is a nice place to go to eat this.

A Ripper: otherwise known as a "Deep-Fried Hotdog". Three plain and simple words, but when…read morecombined, they are nearly pornographic. At least they are for me. Rutt's Hut has been on my punch list for a long time. Actually NJ fried Hot Dogs have been both from Rutt's and from Hiram's over in Ft. Lee. I got to Hiram's and today was my luck day to get a shot at a Ripper. Rutt's is a bit off the beaten path and is down a meandering pothole filled road in a very industrial feeling part of town surrounded by wooded areas. It seems like it would be a better place for a serial killer body dump than a Hot Dog vendor but it's been there since 1928 so it must be doing something right. There is a large, private, and free parking lot which is a huge bonus in my playbook. The building looks like it is in disrepair. There are 2 areas to eat here. A door to the left seems to be a pub/bar with sit down service and then there is the right side that I went to which is a stand up, indoor counter where you can get in and out very quickly. This is a cash only spot so come prepared. Get to an open counter worker, give them your order, and pay when they hand over the goods. I was a little intimidated when I walked in because it was clear that everyone else in the place understood the ordering routine and knew the menu (there are quite a few other items you could order other than Rippers). I stood in a corner like a potted plant for about 10 minutes and watched what others did when they walked in before I figured out the process. It's pretty simple but I did not want to screw up Rutt's world order by doing something stupid. The 3 Rippers I ordered were good (but not best in class for me). The one I liked the most was the chili cheese dressed Ripper because the chili was actually quite tasty. On the counter are large containers of brown mustard and almost-fluorescent yellow relish. People seem to love the stuff. It was a bit like sweetened sauerkraut for me and the color of it makes me think it is either radioactive or seasoned with antifreeze. I would be happy going here again but I can't say that my Rippers were anything special. I might ask for them to be a little overdone next time to add a bit of texture. What I did like about Rutt's was the history, the dilapidated building, the simplicity of the menu, the naming of their dogs as "Rippers", and the fact that it felt like I was eating among real NJ natives that knew exactly what they were there for. Experiencing local culture doesn't get much better than that.

My only wish is that there was actual seating (it's more of a grab-and-go spot) & the wall being wide open made it feel a bit drafty. Still, the food is worth it.
