Not spectacular because the tall waiter who greeted us, gave us the menus and told us that we are lucky to have him as a waiter never ever looked at us ever again so we had to ask a waitress to call him but she said she will take care of us. First I'd like to say if there would anything lower than 1 star, I'd rate it at less than 1 star. The stuff is extremely horrible. Customer service does not exist in this restaurant. I dined here last week on Thursday. We went there a little after 8 and it was very busy. The hostess and our waitress were very nice. Our hostess made great recommendations and took the time to explain each item in detail. I came with one guest and we ordered the lamb shank entree, grilled fish entree, the avocado salad, two samsas: one meat, one pumpkin. It was my first time trying a samsa, and the pumpkin one was very good-- I would order it again (just keep in mind it's filling). My guest enjoyed the meat samsa. The entrees were very big -- my friend enjoyed the lamb shank (the only negative review was that the mashed potatoes that accompanied them were instant-mix). My grilled fish on top of vegetables was seasoned and cooked well. The avocado salad is simple but refreshing -I enjoyed the dressing made of dill and lemon! Delectable. I will come back to sample more items on their menu. Go with a bigger group so you can share family style and try more dishes! read more

Serving up some of your standard (and some lesser known) Uzbek cuisine, Nargis takes you on a journey through the Silk Road by way of your stomach. It serves up an authentic styled interior complete with colorful ikat prints, golden oriental chandeliers, cushioned benches, and intricate Islamic-styled metal works. The service is typical of Uzbeks: warm and hospitable. Though some may take the waiters suggestions as pushy, they really are more about ensuring you have the best possible meal. For drinks, aim for a pitcher of the housemade kompot. I usually stray away from these fruit concoctions as they tend to be too sweet, but Nargis manages to lower the sugar without sacrificing taste. For appetizers, my family ordered some traditional Uzbek non (lepyoshka), Tashkent Salad, Spring Salad with Feta, meat samsas, and chebureki (fried meat patties). The lepyoshka, while fresh and tasty, did not deliver that exotic taste I usually love in the Uzbek variant. Instead of it being served with some delicious cumin seeds, it was dressed up with sesame seeds that didn't add much to the taste. The Tashkent Salad, which consisted of crispy onion straws, boiled meat, scallions, radish, and boiled eggs all in a creamy dressing, was flavorful but could have used a bit more salt. The Spring Salad with Feta was a favorite at our table: fresh, perfectly seasoned, and delicious. The samsas were also scrumptious, but my hat goes off in particular to the cheburek. Usually, I find chebureki to be far too oily and heavy to be palatable, but Nargis' version is heavenly: crispy without being over-fried, light, and with well-seasoned meat to be found on the inside.The soups were also extremely worthy of note! The lagman, a tomato-based thick noodle soup, was extremely flavorful and well-seasoned. My favorite of the meal, however, was the chalop: a sour milk soup filled with radishes, onions, and herbs. I'm usually not one for cold soups, but this was a STELLAR choice. Don't let the ingredients scare you; this is one amazing bowl of milk. As far as entrees, we ordered khonim (steamed pasta rolls with potatoes and onions, topped with tomato sauce), manti (traditional Uzbek dumplings), and a variety of lyula and lamb kebabs. The khonim, a dish my mother remembers fondly from her childhood growing up on the delicacies of Tashkent's bazaars, was just all right; the pasta used was delicious, but the potatoes and onions inside seemed to clash to much with the Italian inspired exterior. My mother noted it was not at all like what she had growing up. The manti, usually a personal favorite, were also just ok. Served in wooden steamer baskets (reminiscent of dim sum service), the manti's dough was plain and the meat on the inside had that unfortunate character typical among many Uzbek places of clumping into smaller bits rather than forming a solid unit. It also lacked that cumin kick that I adore. The kebabs, however, were quite good; marinated well, tender, and served with generous helpings of delicious potatoes and grilled mushrooms. Offering up a wide variety of dishes at EXTREMELY reasonable prices, Nargis ranks up there with some of the better Uzbek establishments I have happened upon and is definitely worth a visit if you're in the mood to venture to the lesser known parts of the culinary world. read more

Super tight, super packed, long lines....all worth the hassle. The soups are amazing, anything they serve on a stick is perfectly grilled and super tasty, the French fries are CRAZY! Sunday night, we called 45 minutes ahead to get on the wait list, and when we arrived the wait was reportedly 40 minutes, but we got seated in about 10. The eggplant salad and the babaganoush were delicious. The waiter recommended the lepeshka (bread) and it went great with the appetizers. We also had the fried meat manti, soup of the day, pilaf, and 3 different kebabs. By the way, whenever you see "meat" on the menu, that's going to be lamb. Went here for a second time last night with a friend for my birthday. We had the delicious 'Spring Salad' with loads of feta cheese, and equally delicious fresh bread to start. I also had the refreshing homemade fruit drink, an infusion of Apple and berry flavors. My friend had a glass of wine, quite reasonably priced. The main course was the branzino; a mild, sweet fish, cooked to perfection on a bed of saffron rice, with a small dish of pomegranate sauce - sweet and tangy. What was more enjoyable is that we were seated quickly outside, with ample table space. The waitstaff, always quick and attentive, provided extra tablecloths as impromptu 'wraps' for female patrons who were a little chilled; a nice, considerate touch. The food is delicious and well-priced. The only downside I can think of is that they no longer accept AmEx as payment, only Visa, MasterCard or cash, as was apologetically explained to us by our pleasant host, Boris. Not a major compromise, so we paid in cash, and will do so the next time we return. A nice place for friends, family or a date. And yes, they do speak English too, as my Russian is minimal. I don't know why the average review is 4 stars. The lamb was very gamey and felt strange chewing it. The bread, though enormous was very hard on the bottom such that you have to pull the top off the bottom. The hummus was actually very good and fresh. The chicken kebabs were unimpressive dark meat like you get at the Russian buffet for 4.99 a pound. They are a busy spot (who likes empty spots) so get a drink while you wait. Recommend the shashlik shish kabobs and the oxtails. The only problem with this place is that it is so incredibly far from my place in Midtown Manhattan. You cannot, unfortunately, satisfy an Uzbek food craving easily. I learned this the hard way, after coming here and craving basically everything I ate a day later (the lagmon, with its bouncy homemade noodles and chunks of flavorful beef, the crispy pumpkin manti, and the tender grilled meats). Also, everything is better with a dollop of sour cream, and Uzbek cuisine here takes full advantage of that fact. The atmosphere is intriguing as well, with its Central Asian decor.
