Nice cozy restaurant with modern interior. The front section is bright but the back section is darker and more appropriate for a dinner date. Service was good during weekday lunch since there weren't many people. The food is good but some of the prices are high. We enjoyed the mantis and the plov was delicious but a bit smaller than expected. The beshbarmak was tender meaty goodness on top of some wonton wrappers. The broth was so rich and good especially with the smooth wrappers essentially acting as noodles. The meat was too much for two people though so we took it home. read more

My friend spoke highly of this place, but it was under renovation when we walked by to check it out. I came here a couple of weeks ago to check it out with my sister. The decor is absolutely amazing, the service is great, and the food is so delicious. I enjoyed the Avocado Salad, the Babaghanoush, and the Chicken Skewer. My sister enjoyed her eggs. Whenever I'm in Southern Brooklyn, particularly in Sheepshead Bay or Brighton Beach, is when I get my fix for Uzbeki food. Nargis cafe is one of the more modern places serving this cuisine, and specializes in pumpkin samsa, manti, lagman, and meat skewers. My friend and I were one of the only diners there on a weekday afternoon, and so our food came out speedily and our server was always just feet away, ready to tend to our every need. I loved the presentation of the dishes, especially how the miniature manti came in a porcelain tea cup of sorts. It came with sour cream on the side to dip our cute manti in, and made us feel like we were having Uzbek afternoon tea. The pumpkin samsa and plov were also delicious and buttery. We weren't looking to eat meat for this particular meal, and Uzbeki food is typically pretty meat centric, so these were the only dishes we tried. All dishes come with a refreshing salad with sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, and red onion, which completed our spread. The menu is otherwise unforgiving for a vegetarian palate. We finished with some delicious baklava, made fresh on the premises. The decor is nice enough for a special occasion but also appropriate for casual drop ins. Prices are incredibly reasonable, a benefit of being so in the cut and far from the subway. If you're up for it, take a stroll down Sheepshead Bay road for other adorable cafes. read more

Service was excellent with a little correction: they should really coordinate the order in a way that they could bring bread and salads first and then main dishes instead of bringing all at once. Nargis is a South Brooklyn staple, you don't want to sleep on this gem. The mushroom kebab sets this place apart from other restaurants that serve the same cuisine. I've never had anything like it and am craving it as I write this. Delicious. The service and ambiance is great too, the staff provides excellent recommendations, especially for those who may appreciate additional guidance on the menu. The food here is fantastic. If you like Uzbek or Russian food, go here. I ordered the: Cheese cigars: this was excellent, would recommend. It comes with a sauce Navruz Salad: I loved this, definitely could be a meal in itself but best if shared Herring: really good and I loved the potatoes that came with it. The herring does have bones. Mixed Spreads Platter: this is similar to standard middle eastern spreads, but it also has kimchi and pickled vegetables, which was a nice touch. Bounding and astounding, weaving and achieving, this restaurant dishes and swishes with flying colors in every aspect of the dining game. They serve bread that stays hot the entire meal, never hardens, plentiful, and served with olive oil, it is imperative you order this even if it is not free. It is worth getting. The fresh juice they have will allow you to digest everything easier. I really enjoyed the Lagman soup, a regional soup with lamb, noodles, and vegetables. It is the perfect soup for a cold winters day. Thankfully they serve this in two sizes. I would eat this in a boot. That is how good it is. The Uzbek Plov, a pilaf plate of lamb, vegetables, and rice, is alright. There is plenty of food in it, but the lamb gets tough and dries out. It needs a nice sauce to work through it, but otherwise it falls short. It is a manageable portion to eat. No dinner is complete without eating some cherry verniki. These are dumplings in a cherry sauce and you get a generous amount. Incredibly silky and has plenty of flavor. You could order these as an entree, but I would order these as a dessert. I really enjoyed the classic rock music playing as it created a solid contrast of old world food and new world angst that this food solidly provides. When you leave, the whole experience will have you winning and grinning all the way home. read more

First time having Uzbeki food, and it certainly won't be my last. Even from the exterior, Nargis is very charming. Enter and you'll find yourself in a cafe-like atrium with tons of natural sunlight and a beautiful bar/counter space. In the back is a full dining room as well. The staff here were so lovely and kind, and took the time to talk to us about the items on the menu and were constantly checking in. Opted to sample some of the more traditional dishes which included chicken manti, baklava, as well as the meat samsa. Everything was delicious. The samsa had a nice flaky exterior and the meat was well seasoned. The manti came in the cutest little white pot with a lid and were so good on their own I didnt feel the need to dip them into sour cream or vinegar. Last but not least the baklava-- wasn't too sweet or drenched in syrup as it sometimes can be and was full to the brim with pistachios. Chefs kiss. read more

Like most restaurants, this place's rating is dependent on what you order. They spent a lot of time renovating it and it looks great, including the bathrooms. Kutabi had a small amount of filling. On the other hand, the Samsa was delicious, flaky, and had a healthy amount of lamb, I would definitely get more. When they were on coney island they had this amazingly good crispy deep-fried dumpling with potatoes. I ordered it here but they seem to have changed the recipe or the process and it wasn't the same nor was it what I wanted. They wouldn't take it back. However, as it sat there and I ate some with the chicken kebab I ordered, it wasn't so bad either. Worst than the coney island one, but I can live with it. The compote was also good though I wish they would serve it with the fruit or at least give me the option. I also tried their steak eggs benedict which was delicious, if anything I just wish there was more of it, more eggs/steak... charge me an upcharge fine. No, they don't have any good wine, but if you bring yours, then they charge you $15-30 for EACH bottle of YOUR OWN STUFF. Even for a nice company of FIVE. Their wines stink. They blast ONE three minutes music track FOREVER. No variations. The food service is SLOW and portions and truly MINISCULE. Never going back there. read more

I also stole a bite of chicken shashlik from my friend's plate and it was so juicy, tender and well seasoned. Our server was very attentive and did a great job on recommendations. My friend and I spent a good evening getting the taste of Uzbek Russian cuisine and to give her the taste of nostalgia after being away from Brooklyn for quite some time. For me I've been here only 5 times but she's been a local for many years. The first runs we both had back in the day was great. Food was outstandingly good and memorable. Perhaps my very first Uzbek food experience. Never had such good dumplings, Plov, and potatoes in my life. Service is fantastic and always exceptional wait time to get our food. However the quality of the food has changed. Everything is still edible and retains its signature traditions. The Shurpa soup we ordered has lots of oil on the top layers and the meat was bare as it retained more fat and bones to enjoy the savory parts. The Plov was not as flavorful as we remembered and it was much more oily than most Plovs we had. But the Cheburak pastries and Lagman soup hit just right. Crispy patty pastries and hot spicy punch kick in the noodle Lagman soup. It's always difficult to keep a good consistent taste but this place still holds a special place for all Brooklynites and their love for Uzbek food. Keep holding on to the traditional tastes and Nargis Cafe will come out unforgettable again. read more

The menu is huge so very hard to choose. Also not clear what's vegetarian and what's not, since not all dishes have the best descriptions. When we finally made choices, it was a lot of food! - Beet salad to start. So good! - Crispy cheese cigars were solid. Cheese could be better. I would've passed on these but I can see them being a table favorite especially if there's kids. - Kutabi with greens. I LOVE. They should definitely put more filling to take it to the next level. But very tasty! - Khonim. Lovely dish but a little flavorless. I wish it didn't smell strong of potato starch, there must be a technique to avoid the smell. I asked for hot sauce and ate one half drenched in sauce. Second half I didn't eat. - Plov. Delicious rice with lamb. Mom finished almost the whole thing on her own. Great way to start the meal Samsa with Meat - lamb and beef in a crispy pastry. 1 piece can be split by 2 or 4 if you have multiple apps. Great texture on the crust, nice flavors in the filling. Goes well with their version of the salsa/red sauce! Fried calamari - Skip this one. i've had better. not sure if the squid was fresh. was a little rubbery. Lagman - noodle soup with beef, lamb, cabbage and veggies. Comes in a small bowl. Packs a punch of flavor. Lots of meat and very hearty. Noodles are fresh and hand pulled. I think the portion of this can be bigger but tasty nonetheless! Braised Lamb Shank - braised in red wine and mushroom sauce, served with mashed potatoes. This didn't taste like a traditional Uzbek dish but the lamb was REALLY GOOD. Tender and flavorful. The mashed potatoes were a miss. It had a grainy texture. Might have been from a box? Split Cornish Hen with Garlic - YUM. super tender, lots of garlic. Side of grilled veggies. Really enjoyed this one! Just be ready to pick bones :) Lamb Ribs + Ground Lulya Kebab - THIS WAS THE STAR. MUST get their lamb rib kebab. grilled to perfection, great flavor and perfect amount of fat to meat ratio on the rib. The ground lulya kebab was really good too. I gave 2 stars because of shish kabobs, otherwise - will be 0 or 1. I had a small party (15 people) and I had quite a discussion with their manager about food quantity, because their prices. It suggest that I should get a couple of each appetizers on each side of the table and it should be enough. Honestly, it was not enough when I came, so I had to order additional dishes. Here are few of their plates prices: basic appetizers ranged between $14 and $18, fried potatoes with mushrooms (small plate) - $18 (I had order extra!), smoke fish platter (very upset!) - $30, samsa -$6, one skewer of shish kebob - $10-$11 (you should get 3-4 per person!). Oh, and their supposed to be specialty - plov (or pilaf) - even I (non-Uzbek) can cook it 10 times better. I highly recommend bypass this restaurant in favor of other Turkish or Asian restaurants. read more
