If I could give 10 stars I would! I meant to do a review the last two times I went and just forgot - but I truly found the most wonderful little spot to not only get my nails done, but hair, as well! Sophia is an absolute gem of a human. I went in today because I was trying to give myself a little self care because I've recently lost my dog, and I was hoping it would help. Of course I burst into tears five minutes after I sat down and had to explain and they truly could not have been sweeter about it. I of course explained what was going on, and they were just genuinely caring. AND my nails look beautiful. I really wanted to like this nail shop in Alameda because it's very conveniently located for me. The woman who gave me a pedicure (I forgot her name blame it on my postpartum brain and loss of gray matter!) was incredibly sweet and friendly. So for her customer service skills I would def give 4-5 stars. However a few days after my pedicure the side of one my big toes started to become very sore. I figured it was just an ingrown toe nail. About a week later I noticed some discoloration and the side of my toe was swollen and became more painful. I believe it was some kind of bacterial of fungal infection. As someone who gets pedicures every 3-4 weeks I've never experienced something like this with my toes. Luckily I had some thymol oil at home and took a 600 ibuprofen. This immediately helped the pain and swelling to go down. I've experienced getting water under my acrylic nails from cleaning, washing dishes, etc. if the nail was lifted which is why I had the thymol but I've never experienced this with my toes with a gel pedicure. I'm not sure if it's something with the tools or the filters in the chairs but something definitely caused my toe to become impaired. read more

I recently set up an appointment for someone who was celebrating his birthday. From the time I called for the appointment, to the time we got there, the customer service was very professional and kind! They were very accommodating. I felt even more comfortable when they took my temperature at the door, so I know they are abiding by the current rules and regulations. One thing that I noticed (that I loved) is that they didn't do a lot of talking to each other. They seemed very engaged and attentive to their customers that they were working on. Rare! I love the prices, I love the attentive staff, I love the quality, and I love the nail polish selection. The only thing that is missing is a swanky upscale vibe, but who needs that when you have everything else? Not me! They even have a customer loyalty program! Now that is some serious customer appreciation. Their color selection is amazing! I have never seen such a great variety of colors and brands. They have all of the newest OPI colors! The pedi chairs are incredibly comfy and they have a ton of magazines to read. I have been to this place on three occasions. Twice I went in and got an acrylic fill by Mimi. She was amazing! She asked me what I wanted and listened to my preferences. Thin, natural overlay. She even worked on my shape and stopped regularly to check in and make sure it was okay. She was also very sweet and gentle. On my third visit I went in for another fill and a pedi by one of the other gals. The pedi was okay. The massage was good but there was not much attention to the details. The shaping on my nails and the trimming of my cuticles was poor. She also only did two coats of a color that should have had three. As for the fill, I felt she didn't pay much attention to the shape of my nails or the coloring. I had ridges on my nail and color on my cuticles and the side of my nails. Not cute. If I was basing my review just on Mimi I would give this place five stars. I love that they expanded their service --- for me, It's a one-stop shop for manicure, pedicure, facial and hair cut/color/style. I also love that not only did they expand the services, they also expanded the space and added new chairs with built-in massagers :) It's heavenly when I get all of these things done at the same time. Nancy barely wanted to do the repair because I wasn't getting a full set done and she wasn't happy about not making much money. She tried to talk me out of even getting my nails repaired. After leaving and coming back an hour later, like she instructed I returned to the salon. She had given my appointment away. They obviously aren't trying to obtain NEW customers and don't care about customer service. Long term customers who tip well, are worth more than one time customers. Came back because a friend said just go and ask for Nancy. Went on a whim because it was last minute and got SOPHIA because Nancy was on vacation. I would've gave them 3 stars on the sole reason she was nice but my nails started lifting within a week, AND one nail broke within that time frame. Worst and cheapest quality ever. I've had nails done for 4-5 weeks (yes I know, should've got a fill) but even those never broke! Very sloppy as well. Painted on my cuticles. Specifically asked her to clean out the excess acrylic under my nails because she was sloppy and she missed a bunch of it. Went on a trip and was out of town for a week and had to deal with fabric continuously getting caught on my nail because her half assed work. Don't expect them to be gentle either. They will hack on your nails and skin and buff your skin. Does not soak off-rushes for sloppy work. Not considerate. Went in to fix the broken nail, and she said she would charge me because it was past 2 days...but i was out of town and they were closed yesterday.... so I said take it all off then. It's all lifting anyways. And make sure to SOAK OFF...then she told me to come back when she wasn't even helping anyone. Pedicure was terrible and sloppy as well. She didn't have anything that matched my mani so she picked two colors. One to put on as a base and another on top. Was so sloppy you could see the base everywhere and most of my toe nails were half painted. By far WORST experience. Do not go to Sophia or anyone there. Had plenty of time afterwards to fix and clean up but she left me for my toenails to dry to help paint her co-workers nails. Overall cheap and sloppy work. read more

I've been meaning to go to Nancy's since it opened, as it's practically spitting distance from my place. In fact the only reason I hadn't gone before is straight up fear-- what if I loved it, what if the treatments were great, what if I ended up blowing my ENTIRE paycheck on spa crap just because it was so damn close? I decided to ease in slowly when I needed a manicure last week. The small space is bright and sunny and everything seemed very clean. There were a number of technicians there, although only one other customer at 5:30 on a Thursday evening. I just wanted a regular manicure, and was pleased when no one tried to upsell me to a more expensive treatment. My technician was nice and did a good, pain-free job on my cuticles, and overall the experience was pleasant. Once I left, however, I noticed that the polish on the upper part of several of my nails was really thick, which made the transition from my nails to my skin look really chunky. I'm sure this is something only I noticed, but still-- I was underwhelmed. Also, my polish chipped after the third day (and it wasn't like I was completing construction projects in the meantime)-- also underwhelming. Given how close Nancy's is to my house, the level of cleanliness and the staff's genial nature I'm certainly going to give Nancy's another chance. Here's hoping my rating goes up! ***Update, 11/1/07*** I went back to Nancy's last night and now I'm downgrading my rating, much to my disappointment. I had really hoped this manicure would be better, but it's gloppy around the edges. In addition, she missed a spot when she removed my old nail polish so now I have a bright pink spot showing through my pale new polish-- not cool. Top it all of-- the girl ANSWERED HER CELL PHONE while in the middle of polishing my nails! I mean, really. I like talking to my friends too, but sometimes you just gotta let it go to voice mail. boooooooooo, Nancy's. You're too damn convenient to suck! **ANOTHER UPDATE, 11/15/07** OK, because I'm generous by nature (and lazy too) I gave Nancy's one final try. The results? A cut where the girl got a little too aggressive with the cuticle trimmer followed by an infection. I'm serious, people: I was on Keflex for over a week. My laziness can overcome poor quality, but when a place makes my thumb ooze and swell said place is off the list. Never, ever again. **YET ANOTHER update, 12/7/07*** OK, I just got a really nice, apologetic message from Nancy, which I really appreciate. Since I'm pretty much walking out the door I haven't done anything about it yet, but I will write her back. And I appreciate a business owner who is concerned about people's opinions. I feel guilty as today I strayed from usual waxist to visit Nancy. I'm short on time, and couldn't make the hour trip I normally take. That said, I feel even more guilty that I think I liked Nancy a little more. My brazilian only took 20 minutes, virtually pain-free, thoroughly done, and she did a lovely job of cleaning up all the residue in the end. Now, I would love to give Nancy a 4 however there's a small cleanliness issue that I'm not sure about. The bed that I lied on for my waxing had only a vinyl sheet on top (instead of paper roll, which I'm used to). All I could think about was how many spread eagle women bared their bits on that matt during the week. While she did spray the matt when I was done (and I'm assuming before) it was only a few random squirts of what I can only guess was a sort of disinfectant. Who knows perhaps some more behind the scenes cleaning action went on after I left. Sometimes seeing is believing. read more

Excellent service! The place looks really professional, too - all the ladies wore the same top with a name tag. This place does everything from nails, to facials, to waxing, to hair services. They are quick without making you feel rushed. The nail designs are really cute and they were even able to rescue my boyfriends hideous feet - he plays a lot of sports and doesn't take care of his feet like most men. The bottom of his feet were completely white from dead, dry skin. After leaving this place, his feet were touch-worthy. Prices are really good. My special pedicure was only about $2 more than the cheapest regular pedicure I've seen in West Oakland. I was also surprised to note that there were no harsh fumes coming from this place. Most nail salons have a distinct smell of nail polish remover. This place didn't have that. Definitely coming back here in a few weeks! read more

I came in in a panic because my regular place had closed down and I had a work trip I needed to get my nails and hair done! My husband and I came in at 6:15, and my husband got a haircut and I got a gel mani-pedi, haircut, and a mini massage in less than an hour!! Talk about incredible and fast service! My favor place to get my nails done and eye brows waxed! I come here often since it's only 2 blocks from my house but I love it!! The staff is always so friendly and they'll try to squeeze you in the best they can. They'll let you know if there's a wait and how long it will take, unlike other salons I have been too where they just tell me to wait a little bit and it takes forever. I went in tonight at about 6:20 (no other salons would take me 40 minutes to close) I didn't get her name, but the woman who did my fill was so quick! I got distracted in my phone & she would be ready for the next hand before I knew it. I got a fill (acrylic + gel) as well as a polish change on my feet, and had 2 ladies working on me to get me out of there on time. I'm such a stickler on a good nail job & they did great. Filed the grown out length, shaped them almond as asked, the gel lays flat, cuticles cut perfectly, & the gel was laid symmetrically at the nail bed (I hate when it's painted improperly & gets snagged while washing your hair, or appears uneven) Great job Nancy's :) read more

I have been coming to Nancy's nails since they opened in 2006. They are efficient, professional and very hard working and friendly. The do great massages as s part of the mani-pedi treatment. I brought my mom in for some challenging work once. Cindy worked really hard to ensure that she was able to address my mom's abnormal nail growth circumstance . I also broke my toe and cracked the big toe nail once. After several treatments, Cindy was able to 'nurse' it back to normal. She is so wonderful that I adjust my schedule to work with hers.
