Don't patronize this establishment. Ever since the new owners took over the food has gone downhill. The first time I ordered after the new owners took over the portion for the sides went down. So i decided to stop going here. But today I felt like eating korean food. I ordered a combo with meat jun and bbq chicken. When I got back to my office I had meat jun and chicken katsu. I called them and the lady couldn't understand what I was saying. I kept telling her that I didn't get what i ordered. Then she asked if i could come back and show her and after I said I couldn't come back today, she hung up on me. I know english is their second language, but she should've handed the phone call to someone who could understand what I was saying. Not going back there. This is a pretty popular Korean food lunch spot in downtown so except a line when coming during weekday lunch hours. I ordered the seafood soup with comes with rice and 2 sides. The soup was hot and perfect for a cold gloomy day. I really like their Kimchee but choose their daikon and kimchee cucumber this visit and those sides were equally delicious. I worked in downtown for 8 yr until 7 yrs ago so to work in the area again and revisit this place was pretty nostalgic. The owners seems to have changed but the food still looks the same. The mandoo soup was so good, perfect amount of salt, loved the bamboo or ginger bits in the mandoo and it was a huge portion and very filling for the tummy. The meat portion was so small. They give a small meat jun cut into 6 small strips and 6 pieces of mandoo. The mandoo wasn't very crunchy and more on the softer side. There was more white rice than meat. However, the sides were delicious. If I were to come here again, I would just get the vegetable plate that comes with rice and thats it. Im not going to lie, I used to love coming here for lunch but after the new owners took over my go to's do not taste the same or as it should. The kimchi soup did not taste like kimchi soup, it had no spice and the soup flavor was mainly a meat taste and no kimchi. If you had kimchi soup before you'd know it has something off about it. I got the kimchi fried rice another day and it was bland, no flavor or spice. I took it home and threw it on the pan and threw some red pepper flakes in it, more kimchi, with some other seasonings which helped to bring out some flavor just a little. I'm really hoping it was just one of those off days when i ordered those but I'm going to be very sad if thats how the soup and fried rice is going to be tasting now. I got the mini meat jun plate with 2 choices: sliced daikon and fishcake for $10 and some change. They have variety of side dishes here. I came here shortly after 11am so it wasn't too busy but people started coming after I ordered. The service was efficient. My order didn't take more than 10 minutes. If you're working in downtown Honolulu and want some Korean BBQ, this place is your go to destination. It's located Tamarind Park in downtown Honolulu. This spot is one of my coworker and I's favorite lunch spots to go to. The service here is very exceptional. Between the two ladies in the front, they seem like they got everything under control which is a good thing because during the lunch rush hour, it can get very busy and you can expect lines out the door. This restaurant has no seating area inside, but there are a lot of tables and seats outside. The food here is pretty great too. I usually order their fried chicken and it is one of the best fried chicken I've had. I feel like they incorporate a little hint of curry in their batter. I could eat their fried chicken all day, err day. I've also tried their pork cutlet which also is flavorful. The batter/meat ratio is a perfect balance. This has been my go-to Korean BBQ in downtown for years. I usually get the mini meat jun. Mini plates come with 2 choices of vegetables. The meat jun is soft and tasty. This place does get busy during lunch so if you're short of time, best to call in your order first. If I'm not eating back in the office, I would eat at the tables by this place. When I got back to my office and removed the cover to the soup bowl, I noticed that the noodles didn't look like the typical thin, white noodles I'm used to eating in man doo kook soo. It was ramen noodles! The soup was hot (temperature-wise) but the broth was just okay. I was disappointed with my order, and will not order man doo kook soo from My B.B.Q. again. I got the Kim Chee soup for $9.40 and it came with the soup, two scoops rice, and a pick your own vegetable type deal. My coworker went and picked it up so I am not sure how the pick your vegetable system works but I ended up with spicy cucumbers and broccoli. The broccoli was just basic steam broccs but the spicy cucumber was tasty and the right amount of spicy. The soup came in a styrofoam cup and I am pretty sure that means I am supposed to be angry at them. The soup naturally seperates into 3 layers. The top layer consists of tofu and Kim Chee and is spicy and flavorful but not very hearty. The next layer is only broth and makes you realize that life is depressing and difficult without tofu to fill the empty spaces. At some point I realized I could add the 2 rice scoops to the broth and then I felt better. At the end of the soup bowl you are greeted by all of the ground beef that has sunk to the bottom of the soup. This layer is confusing but still tasty. The beef and the tofu want to be friends but they are destined to be apart. Overall My BBQ was good, but there is some serious competition in the area and I do not think this place stands up to some of the other places nearby. I come here for lunch sometimes. Everything I've had is good. Notable items are the meat jun, bbq chicken and chicken katsu. The protein I pick lately is the fish jun. I wasn't sure how'd it'd be, but I really like it. They give about 6-8 pieces of fish in the regular plate. My friend likes the Mahi Mahi jun also. The sides are great. My fave side is the dried radish. It's sweet and salty and crunchy. I love it and wish more korean places served it around here. The fish cake and tofu are also favorites of mine. When I get the mini plate, it looks like not that much food, but it always is! I tried the regular plate today and had leftovers (I could have eaten all of it, but would have been too full and wouldn't have been very productive the rest of the day). I like this place for the express style that it is. It's not the same as a sit down korean bbq place, but it's fast and tasty just the same. read more

3 stars for a surprisingly filling meal that I'd def order again! Read below for a detailed review of each component. It was a cold day with cloudy skies threatening rain all day long. Perfect day to try their mandoo kook (mandoo soup, no noodles)! It also came with two sides so I ordered the kim chee tofu and Mac salad. Mandoo kook: This was very filling! I'm not sure how many mandoo it came with, but I want to say 7 or 8. The mandoo were pretty hefty (which I LOVE!) and the wrapper for the mandoo seemed thicker than what I'm used to when I get fried mandoo. The soup also included bean sprouts, strips of what I think was either fish cake or fried tofu, a couple of pieces of choi sum and some shredded carrots. Besides the choi sum, I didn't even bother with the other items because I just wanted to eat the mandoo. Kim chee tofu: Not spicy at all, but that was okay with me. It still had that savory flavor from the Korean red paste. Mac salad: Nice and creamy. Didn't have that sour flavor that some mac salads have. Service: As you would expect. There was one lady working the register and one taking the orders. Both were friendly. Ambiance: It's basically an "order and go" place. There are community tables to sit on outside but I think most just go back to their desks. Overall experience: I really enjoyed the mandoo kook! I would def order it again! Even though I frequent the place every several months, the two kind Korean ladies always remember me and treat me like a regular. The spicey pork is delicious, and they serve it cut bugogi style, so no knife required. It's full of flavor, and the sides are abundant and Ono as well. The price for my full meal was about $11, not including the bottle of water I purchased, and that's reasonable for downtown. It was super dark/burnt and drenched in oil - just looking at the picture I took of it makes me gag. I reluctantly took a bite and it tasted soggy, rubbery and just plain nasty. I hate to waste food but that day, I threw half of my lunch away. The sides that came with it were just as bad. I don't know if they just re-use their leftovers or what, but it just didn't taste FRESH. I usually love cucumber kimchee because it's crunchy and spicy. Here, it was very SOUR, soft and not spicy at all. It tasted like it was soaking in vinegar for too long. The choy sum I got was a little better, but it also tasted strange. There was a super oily sheen to it....I didn't want to eat anymore. I was glad the rice was edible so I didn't have to completely starve for lunch. I regret not going to Red Pepper. SERVICE: They've got this covered. They are efficient and prompt. But then it IS counter service. QUALITY/QUANTITY: I don't really know when they started sliding on the quality of their foods. But it really has been noticeable. I ordered the bulkogi. Which they called barbecue beef. And that is a more accurate description of this dish. The flavor was remarkably un-Korean-like. Hardly any sesame flavor at all with very little garlic punch. It was more like a weakened, watered down teriyaki sauce. The portion was also disappointingly meager (see photo). Coworker ordered the bibim kook soo (see photo). Holy Moses was this a misrepresentation of a wonderful dish. Where was the sweet and zippy orange kochujang sauce? Bi Bim Bap $11.31 (Tax included) has more meat than the photo on the menu pictured. It's oilier than I'm used to and the cucumber in it is not seasoned. The gochujang comes separate which I like! VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! First off I have gone to My BBQ many times in the past and have had good service always. However, today I went to get a vegetable plate. I went and was told the price and I rendered the money. I gave the money to one female in her hand, she returned with my change but instead of placing it on my like I did to her. She placed my change on the counter even though I had my hand out ready to receive it. Then after I place my request for the vegetables of my choice the same female closed the container. Or can you :/ I ordered the kalbi/chicken plate ... with japchae, bean sprouts, tofu and seaweed. I appreciated the fact that they separately pack your food from the banchan.And you really can't mess up banchan .... Unless you down grade everything. I was so disappointed when I dug into it. Anyone who has eaten korean food with me, knows that I can eat banchan for days!! I get myself full off of it before my entree ever hits the table! I can't say that the same thing happened here :( Japchae was tasteless .. nothing!! Bean sprouts tasted like it was just soaking in water before they put it in the metal serving thingamabobs. The seaweed ... dear god ... how salty do you need to make it? And the tofu?? The only way you can mess up tofu is if you have it soaking in the wrong sauce ... I don't know what they did to the poor tofu ... I took a couple of bites from each and closed the container back up. I open my other container that held the rest of my food. I don't get it. Fave lunch spot of my coworkers at the office. Small Korean shop run by a family. Veggies and sides are always fresh and authentic tasting, but the ladies at the registers can be a little stingy when packing them. Would it kill em to add a little more kim chee or choi sum per order? Line can get lengthy depending on the time, I would suggest before 11:30am or after 1pm to avoid the business lunch crowd. Prices are reasonable with minis around $7 and full plates around $11. My boss always orders the fish or meat jun, made to order. And my go-to is the veggie plate, without rice, so its 5 choices of veggies from the side bar. This establishment also takes odd hour orders- so if youre ever too lazy to cook dinner, stop in during lunch hour to order food to go before they close. Last pickup is 4:45 on weekdays.
