I had my Korean food craving. Since I didn't want to carry food on the bus from Ala Moana, I decided to come here. The worker was patient with me as I looked at the menu before I ordered. I got a mini beef plate. For about seven dollars... I could have gone to L&L for their chicken katsu plate. When you hungry though, it fills you up. The morning bento/plates of fried rice with egg are a steal at $2.75 each. They usually have either kim chee fried rice with an egg or regular fried rice with an egg. and it's quite filling. I wish they had it for lunch too. It is a little oily, so if you're looking for a healthy breakfast, this isn't it. But I think they only have it until 10:30ish so grab one on your way in and enjoy the goodness of fried rice in the morning. Oh the guilt. But oh the yumminess. My B.B.Q. is a great go-to for the downtown work force. This place is very close to my office, and I love the variety of options to choose from at all times of the day. In the mornings, I like to grab their packaged kimchee fried rice, topped with an egg and some little sausages. This bountiful helping is ful of flavor and just the right amount of spice. Only complaint? It's a little greasy, even for fried rice. The lunch options are yummy. I've only had a few full & mini plate items from their menu, but I really enjoy their chicken tofu. The liquidy sauce is delish, but very salty, and smothers a plate of mixed veggies, chicken, & tofu with a large side of white rice. Finally, when I've just got the munchies, I love to come down and just order a side of sides! Kimchee, cucumbers, long rice, and mac salad. YUM! Fills me up & tastes delish. $5 does seem a little steep, though, at least when compared to the price of ordering a full plate that comes with sides. I've also found, especially during lunch hour, that wait times for the lunch & dinner entrees can take a while to come out of the kitchen, so don't come here hoping for a quick grab & go. My go to for Korean anytime I'm at the office. I really like their kimchi and usually get a double order when I need a refill at home. Their mini plates are pretty generous and comes with two sides. Today it was chop chase and broccoli with my meat jun. Their fish katsu is also quite delicious. I like the kalbi too and usually get the full order so that I have leftovers for the boys at home. All of their meats are well marinated and tender. BBQ chicken is another go to. You can't really go wrong with either a mini plate (which has a limited menu) or their full plate. Their fried chicken wings are also pretty good. They'll even substitute the rice for another ban chan choice. As for their ban chan, if you want tofu you need to come early because once they run out, it's done. I'm not a big fan of their man doo kook soo. They use Sun noodles instead of the regular white noodles (which they use in the bi him kook soo). Even though they usually have a line, the food gets served pretty quickly (5-7 minute wait tops). read more

A small Hole-in-the-wall place, super easy to miss when you walk by. They sell Korean plate lunches here, in a much similar style to Yummy's BBQ. You order the meat dish and then choose your 4 choices of vegetables, if you order the regular or two vegetable choices, for the mini size. Comes automatically with two scoops of white rice but you ask for brown rice w/no additional charge. Their prices are higher then Yummy's BBQ but I think their food is better also. Things I have ordered: +Chicken Katsu - good +Meat Jun - good +Bi bim bap - good but portion is too small, not filling. +Kook So - good but portion is too small, not filling. +Mandoo - NOT good. Pieces are too small. Unable to taste the vegetables or pork in the mandoo. +Spicy pork - good. +Kal-bi - really good but portion is really small. They serve their Kal-bi w/ the big bones and so the meat is barely there. But, their sauce is pretty good and tasty. This is a small place, no seating, no tables or chairs, besides what's available nearby and definitely no restrooms. It's basically grab and go. I used to come here every week...to the point where the ladies recognized me & would give me extra helpings of the veggies I would choose :) Sadly, those ladies that I used to know aren't working the front area anymore?! But thankfully these new women up front are just as generous! I've only tried the Meat Jun + Mandoo Combo (~9); this is one piece of meat jun & 4 pieces of mandoo. The meat jun is the clear winner out of the two; tender, flavorful and the egg to meat ratio is good. The mandoo is homemade and stuff with meat, veggies & clear noodles yum! The best part is the dipping sauce!! The combo meals come with your choice of 4 veggies (mini's come with 2 choices); I am listing relative placement if you are looking at the counter... I love Korean food so I'm super picky when it comes to it. This place just didn't do it for me. Pros: big selection of sides, mini sized portions seemed very big, very quick Cons: pricey!!!!!! I tried their meat jun and wasn't satisfied. It was soggy and the quality of meat was not great. As for my sides, I did not like their long rice. I don't really have high expectations for a take out Korean lunch place downtown - as long as it's cheap, filling, and doesn't give me food poisoning! They're known to have huge portions. I had a mandoo plate for $9 and I got like 7-8 mandoo, a heap of rice, and four sides. This fed me for like 3 lunches. What a deal. read more

Pretty average fast food Korean BBQ take out. Tiny place near Jack in the Box. Likes: Portions are decent for the price, and the sides are in a separate container, so your main dish and rice is pretty full. They accept credit card! Dislikes: I get the meat jun, but it's pretty oily, especially the ones at the bottom. Make sure you have paper towels! Also, the BBQ has a lot of liquid. There aren't many choices for Korean BBQ in the downtown so if you want some Korean BBQ for lunch, I'd say this is the "best" place (pretty much by default). There's another place in Pioneer Plaza, but I don't see a real kitchen in there, so I'm kind of scared to try. read more

There's only a few Korean places in Downtown for lunch. One of my favorite lunch option is the veggie plate. My B.B.Q has a variety of vegetables to select. Veggies to choose from include pickled cucumber, cabbage, fishcake, bean sprouts, choy sum, shoyu potatoes, mayonnaise potatoes, and many more. Of course, my usual plate is a veggie plate so it's quick to grab lunch and go. read more

I love meat jun. The meat jun here is among the worst I have ever eaten. The meat they use is tough and super chewy. You can tell just by looking at the meat that the texture is weird. I stay away from this place completely because of the low quality of the materials they use. read more

A friend warned me about this place because she found bright red blood in her plate of Kalbi once. I still went. Cons: 1. The food is overpriced and not very good. I could hardly eat my very badly burnt BBQ chicken. It was also very oily! Yuck! I actually feel sick now. 2. The ladies at the front will snap at you if you make any changes to the order after they send the order to the back. The daughter is especially rude. Poor customer service and not flexible at all. Craving Korean in downtown? Well if the mood strikes for a local style Korean plate lunch, then look no further than My BBQ. Tucked away by Tamarind Park, it is quickly overlooked by its next door neighbors, however they offer some good menu options and very reasonable prices. The menu features your local style Korean plates, whether you want meat jun, BBQ chicken, spicy pork, bi bim bap or more, they certainly have it. All the regular plates come with 4 vegetable options and 2 scoops of rice and the mini comes with 2 vegetable options and 2 scoops of rice. The side vegetables are decent and do the job, however aren't wow-ing. The kim chee isn't overwhelmingly spicy, the shoyu potatoes a little sweet, and the bean sprouts just a tad watery while the other items are good. One weird thing: the katsu sauce was pretty vinegary and liquid not thick and ketchup based like other places. Service is quick and efficient. You place your order and move over to select your vegetables and in a few minutes your meal is served and you can be on your way! No seating if you plan on eating there, however the park is right there and is nice on a clear day! read more

Two critical observations on my bi bim bap from My BBQ: 1. Where's my egg? No egg on top. I want my egg. Can it be bi bim bap without an egg? 2. Small portions. This is the first time I've eaten a Korean plate lunch and still been hungry when I'm done. Four vegetables (one was plain raw cucumber - what am I? A rabbit?). Two bites per veggie. Bulgogi - three bites. One scoop of rice - six bites. The sauce was on the side in a thimble-sized cup. All totaled, less than 20 bites and 6 minutes and it was gone. So was my $8.90. Walking around town a couple of afternoons ago I ran across this place. I was curious because of the crowd of customers surrounding this place. The day I walked by there must have been 30 people waiting in line or for there food. Today I was back in the area and decided to try this place. No real crowded today but it could be the weather, cold, windy and some rain. Your standard Korean BBQ plate lunch place. 4 choices vegs for regular and 2 for mini. Vegs look good but they are put in a smaller container and given less than other places. Also the kimchee tasted funny like they put vinegar in it, which is odd for a Korean owned BBQ to do. The amount of Vegs added up to what u would get on a mini plate at Kiawe grill. Not very impressed. I ordered the chicken plate. It came with only three pieces of chicken, that's only one piece under a mini. Taste was good but the pieces were oddly thin. Even when I showed my wife she was surprised at how thin they were. I never knew they came thinner. Price was not worth it. I thought the BBQ flavor was spot on but the Vegs were below par and the chicken was the thinnest chicken I had ever seen. They only give three pieces of chicken with the regular plate, I wonder how much pieces u get with a mini. Service was good and the food came out fast. No parking unless u want to pay $20. 2 stars. I couldn't give them an above avg. rating because of the vegs and price value. Would rather go to Kiawe grill ($8) or palama market snack bar ($6) for Korean BBQ chicken. read more

We are just finishing up lunch here and I will never return. To begin, we walk in and there is only one woman taking orders and cash only payments from customers, using no gloves or washing her hands between serving and taking cash. When it was our turn to order the lady was very rude and rushed us through our selection. Monitoring how she was quickly imputing our total on her calculator, I noticed she had charged is $2.25 per can soda. Not thinking anything of it, we paid and for our food. I went back in to get napkins and noticed sodas were listed for $1.00. When I questioned her for my change back, she became combative. Eventually she agreed to give me my change, after a few minutes of back and forth. Customer service is horrible here! read more

Mind you, during lunch rush, so I understand it can get chaotic. But my BBQ chicken was still a little pink and Kalbi red inside. Still not acceptable if the protein isn't cooked thoroughly. Pretty disappointed. Only giving it two stars since my sides were good. Highly unlikely I would come back here. Learned my lesson. Summary: One of my favorite go-to places for lunch in downtown Honolulu. The food: The meat jun & kalbi, in my opinion, rocks. The price, not so much, but this is downtown Honolulu. I'm not sure what they put in their sauce, but mixing those meat drippings with rice is ono. It's one of my personal favorites - so much so that I like to come by to buy from here whenever I'm in downtown. The costs: Because of the high costs, and the availability of better value options elsewhere if one drives, I'd prefer giving this place a 4.4. But this is an excellent option for Korean BBQ for the captive downtown lunch break crowd. read more

It's a little pricy but good. The mini plates are a good deal IMHO - 2 veggy selections (in a separate container) and a nice portion of the main entree with a generous single "scoop" of rice. If you're a meat eater, try their version of bul gogi. read more

PS: My BBQ is one of the best deals in downtown for breakfast. You can get a mini takeout bento local meats (like arabiki or portuguese sausage) with rice, and a few extras (broccoli and a few slices of kamaboko) all for $2.50. Plus they have um pre-made in the mornings, so it's literally grab and go. This is the perfect remedy to mornings after too much alcohol drank and too much money spent :P read more

This is my brand new favorite place in Downtown for lunch on the go! I think I must have walked past this Hole-in-the-Wall like a million times, and I have never took a step in it until recently. I enjoy Korean BBQ very much (As far as authenticity, I can't give any opinions on that), especially for their portions and vegetables! Similar to Yummies, if you order the regular, the meals come with 4 choices of vegetables and 2 scoops of rice; 2 vegetable choices and 1 scoop for the mini. When I first came here, I went straight for my "safety" Korean BBQ meal; the meat jun & fish jun combo. My usual vegetables are corn, rice noodles, macaroni salad, and the daikon. The meat & fish jun was delicious, and my vegetables were the perfect complements to it. I consider this dish a safety, as it is quite hard to mess up for any established Korean/Korean BBQ restaurant. However, today, I tried their Spicy Shoyu Chicken. It really wasn't as I imagined it would be, but it was satisfactory (Although I may never order it again). I wish I took a picture, but the sauce was very unattractive, and the chicken was inconsistent. Some pieces were cooked to perfection, while some were well overcooked. Also, it is attached to the bone. This is my first time eating a Korean BBQ Spicy Shoyu Chicken, so I have nothing to compare with. Service is fast, and friendly. The Spicy Shoyu Chicken took a bit of time, BUT, whenever I order anything else, the wait time was less than 5 minutes. I ordered the Meat Jun and Man Doo combo. The Meat Jun was passable. Veggies were also decent for a fast food type Korean place. However, the fried Man Doo was horrible. Tasted like something that wasn't meat. Can't say that I've ordered anything else here as this was my first time eating here (hard to believe since I have worked downtown for about 15 years). I would try this place again just because the veggies were tasty. Very chincy with their portions though, for the price. I thought this was the only Korean joint in downtown so it was okay. Recently I discovered "Sushi & Bi Bim Bap" down the block which is amazing!! So from now on, no more My BBQ for me. Anyway, about My BBQ. Food is okay, typical Korean. A few times, I got fish jun and it had so much extra oil that I soaked up a bag full of napkins with oil. Wish I had a picture to share. Although the Kalbi is a bit pricey at My BBQ, it is also easily the best in the state. They do not use cross cut short ribs as most everyone else does. They use prime cut short ribs with very little fat and large amounts of kalbi marinated beef. The meat is always grilled to order so that it is hot and delicious. There is not a very big selection of vegetable sidel dishes for the lunch plate which are vegetables - so I routinely get bak choi, par-boiled bean sprouts and shoyu potatoes which are some of the best. Experience with this place is bad. I was in the mood of eating kalbi so I ordered and received my order. I went to work to start eating my plate but come to find out the meat is raw in the inside. Not rare but raw. So I went back with my plate to get it cook a little more. I timed it, I went there at 1232pm and gave my food at 1232 then they cooked it and gave it back to me at 1232pm. Wtf, I didn't want it to be warm or anything, I wanted it well done. I checked the meat and still raw. They told me they will cook it again... Seriously! Give me my money back!! Personal experience, if u want bleeding food that's RAW, go there. Otherwise go to like jack in the box to get COOKED food! Luckily I had to give 1 star, just to post this but eff this place.
