TL;DR A solid Korean plate lunch option in the heart of Manoa. ----- I'm a bit surprised by the current rating for Red Pepper. It seems rather low. Perhaps the critics here are not benchmarking this restaurant against similar offerings in the same space. In my opinion, Red Pepper deserves a 4-star rating. I'm submitting a 5-star review, as I am trying to give it a bump. My usual order here is a combination BBQ chicken and fish jun combo plate, which I always enjoy. Yes, it's about $20, but that's reasonable given the amount of food provided: two pieces each of the chicken and fish jun, a hefty portion of white rice, and four sides. I'm a pretty big eater, and I can typically split this into two meals unless I'm dying of starvation. I recently tried the tofu soup, which was also quite good. I was in the area so I decided to pop in for my baseline meal, a mini kalbi plate with glass noodles and kimchi cucumbers. The food was ready pretty quickly, which probably means it was already sitting in a warmer. I'd probably ideally give it 3.5 stars if I could--I might go back, but it wouldn't be my first choice, and it's a bit better than 3 stars but probably not 4. The beef was lean and okay, but it seemed maybe overcooked, there was something unusual about it that I didn't love but I can't place. The kimchi cucumbers had probably been made a while before because they weren't as crispy and crunchy as I'd prefer. The rice was good and there was some extra kalbi sauce on it which was nice. Gosh! It's been 15 years since I've been in Mānoa Valley. Wonderful to dine in and partake lunch here which opened in 2021. Can't beat free parking these days. This place was quite busy ranging from youth to elderly including a few construction workers enjoying their lunch. There were four seaters with tables available inside. One male cashier took orders and payments in advance, inquired if we want fork or chopstick. A female worker asked what kind of vegetables you'd like to have. Assorted veggies available from mild corn to spicy kim chee. Cool to see decent size tamago as a choice for side or veggie that you'd normally spot at an okazuya. Yes, there's kamaboko and green onion in each sliced tamago. Mini meat jun plate included a choice of 2 vegetables and 1 scoop rice or choice of 3 veggies only. Jap chae: Fresh glass noodles made and seasoned to perfection. Seaweed: Pickled seaweed was soft with perfect crunch from cucumbers, onions and carrots. Tofu: Firm to my liking. If the tofu doesn't break when lifted with hashi or chopsticks, then it passed the firmness test. Meat jun: Crispy egg flour batter on the outside, piping hot when bit on inside, while beef is moist and tender. Paper is placed under meat jun to soak up excess oil. Mini gimmari advertisement on Tempura plate caught my eye. Will need to order this next time. We're all pretty hearty eaters, but we always order the MINI plates, which are very generous and still guarantees leftovers for the next day. Our favorite entrees are the Meat Jun, Spicy Pork, and BBQ Chicken, and our favorite sides are the chop chae, mayo potato salad, egg omelet, cold tofu, shoyu potato, cucumber Kim Chee, and whatever happens to look good that day when you stop by. After my daily workout, I felt like picking up Korean style BBQ for dinner. Originally I called Peppa's in Makiki Village. Tried calling in their number, but a message kept saying that the voicemail hasn't been set up yet. I guess they were busy with walk-in orders and/or the phone line was busy. Ended up calling the next closest location which is in Manoa Marketplace. As I arrived, the restaurant name has now been changed to Red Pepper Korean BBQ. Karl bi was hard and tough, also noticed it was cut thinner than yummys pr peppas. Also they give much less food and less vegetables that other places. I honestly didn't even notice that this place was no longer Peppa's the first time I went after the change over. Same food, seemingly same people, slightly cleaner, slightly higher prices. So don't fret, this is just a cosmetic change, that same Korean BBQ you know and love, and are too lazy to leave the valley (also, have you seen gas prices lately? It's time to eat super local) to get elsewhere, is still very much in Manoa. The new owners kept basically everything the same, even the specials. I did notice that at least the few times I've been back, I've gotten a bit more chicken than Peppa's used to give. Which I'm all for as their BBQ chicken is solid, with that nice flame cooked taste and texture. The vegetable choices, 2 with a mini, 4 with a regular are the same high quality choices ranging from marinated potatoes to kimchee. I usually get two meals out of a regular plate, which is a decent deal. Parking is of course good as it's the big shared parking lot. Dining in is now allowed and if you don't want to wait, just call your order in. No restrooms, but there are communal ones in Manoa marketplace. Korean grub in Manoa........... Yesterday I went to the Manoa Marketplace Shopping Center to get some of my favorite Korean grub @ my favorite Korean fast food joint called - Peppa's. As I got there, little did I know that Peppa's was no longer there (insert Sad Panda face). :( Not to fret gang, not all is lost as a new Korean fast food joint has popped up in Peppa's place and it's called - "Red Pepper Korean BBQ" (insert Happy Panda face)! As I walked into the restaurant and looked around, it appeared that this new restaurant still had some remnants of the old Peppa's menu. Upon looking over the menu, I decided to order myself a regular BBQ Chicken plate. With my plate, I decided to skip out on the rice and get an extra side so I ended up with - Kim Chee, Bean Sprouts, Long Rice, & Egg (2 times). What can I say about the grub? The sides I picked tasted exactly like how Peppa's used to make 'em, and as for the BBQ Chicken, I liked the fact that they didn't burn the chicken as it was cooked perfectly. The marinade on the chicken was on the lighter side, and could have been soaked in the marinade a little longer, but aside from that, I really don't have any complaints about the grub. This is my favorite KBBQ place. I will drive from pretty much wherever when Im craving KBBQ even though there is a different place right down the road from me. I LOVE their Kalbi and my husband gets the meat jun fish jun combo. But I have tried the soup and chicken from here also, very good. We had lunch at this Korean BBQ spot and while the food was good, I was disappointed with the service. We spent over $100 for 4 plates and drinks, which is not cheap. There was no sign saying refills weren't allowed, so my kids refilled their drinks and only to be met with dirty looks from the staff. That kind of attitude is unacceptable, especially when we're paying that much. Good food, but poor customer service leaves a bad impression. At least put up a sign that says "No refills". read more

Got take out from here twice and loved the food both times. On my most recent visit, we ordered take-out for Adminsitrative Professional's Day. Our order was ready when we arrived and was nicely packaged up and ready to go. The food itself was delicious - I had the BBQ chicken with shoyu potato, corn, jap chae, and seaweed. The BBQ chicken was slightly on the dry side, but I like that it wasn't overcooked/charred to a crisp. The ban chan was excellent! I've been going to this spot since 2008 when it was still Peppa's. Red Pepper replaced Peppa's when it closed during the pandemic. When I first tried Red Pepper I was relieved because it was just as good as Peppa's. However, their prices kept creeping up quickly and it's understandable considering Hawaii's economy. Yesterday, however, I noticed their prices have gone up again but now their serving size has shrunk. I noticed immediately the moment I got my foodbox and felt how light it was. After an annual session of family Chinese memorial practice of honoring the departed nearby (Aka Bai-San in Cantonese), it was a rainy Saturday here in Manoa and wanted lunch. I came into the restaurant which was pretty small, but had a couple of tables occupied for diners. There was about five tables total and the restaurant wasn't busy at all. So, I stepped into the restaurant and placed my order. It was a small, but friendly place where I could place my order, and leave with a smile on my face. The small mom and pop establishments are a dying breed so we must support local to keep them afloat in these times. My entire experience took about 20 minutes, from ordering to pick up and leaving the restaurant. The restaurant itself was clean and quite nice. The service was friendly and fast. For the most part, though, it's always good here, especially with the fish jun, since I usually order this on any take out Korean barbecue place in Honolulu. On this trip to Red Pepper Korean barbecue restaurant in beautiful Manoa valley, I basically went for the meat jun & fish jun combination platter. This behemoth platter sells for just under $20. You better believe that it can be enough for 2 meals or for two people. Or maybe just one meal for one person if he's really hungry. That would be me that day. If you are like me, bus route 6 comes thru the area and makes stops on E Manoa Road. My favorite vegetables to have are their seaweed, bean sprouts, and the shoyu potatoes. Extremely overpriced. The cashier has no service, while the assistant has customer service experience. Food wasn't bad but was told by my colleague it can be hit or miss.
