Mr Natural leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I worked there in 1996 for only two weeks in December. I didn't like what I saw. I was going to throw away a bunch of wilted, crappy looking spinach and they said no! It's good. WHAT? Slime is good? No way. Juice it! So I did and hope I made no one ill. The yogurt in the tiny fridge would undergo too many temp changes to be deemed 100% safe for me. The backdoor to the kitchen was always left open and uh flies were rolling all over things back there. The biggest blow I received from Mr Natural came in 1999 a good three years after I worked there for what is a a tiny insignificant moment in a lifetime. UH, but enough time to get your identity stolen! IRS hit me with back taxes of $18K from a job at Mr Natural. WHAT? Turned out I was on their payroll, name and social security number from 1996 -1999 full time. I called them in hopes that it was nothing more than an accidental error. I was sure it had to be. Friends said I was naive. One friend called before me and said he needed a social security card. Um, they had some suspicious advice for him and really disappointed me. (He will back this up as it shocked us both) When I called to find out what had happened all I said was name and they hung up. They refused to take my call. When I called the last time they their daughter got on and said that they were religious people who practiced yoga and not criminals. Funny because I never called them that, in fact I didn't think they knew me or why I was calling. UNLESS! They did know me all too well and what they were doing with my info. They pretty much incriminated themselves, I had been open to a good story filled with erroneous bookkeeping excuses. My paperwork will back up all the legalities of this mess. Based on this horrid experience I can't enter a Mr Natural location, it pretty much ills me. Memories of a huge, huge pile of gluten sitting on a wooden table covered with a towel with flies buzzing about in the kitchen just ugh! Makes me dry heave. I love love love Mr Naturals. First of all, don't let the name scare you. I didn't eat here for years and missed out on the most delicious Mexican breakfast thinking it was just "healthy" food. Now that I know the joys of their chilaquiles, we are well acquainted. It's a little bit more expensive than most similar casual dining places (for a plate, drink and tip it comes to $15), but worth it. I will say that I find their lunches less exciting (small, delicious yet overpriced plates). And I also have been disappointed because I've attempted to call to place a to-go order multiple times when they are supposed to be open but they never answer. So either the number listed is incorrect, the hours are incorrect or they just aren't answering. In which case I have to settle for subpar chilaquiles elsewhere :( read more

I'm looking for a restaurant that serves organic and/or non-GMO food. I would like to know, yes or no, does Mr. Natural use organic/non-GMO ingredients? To what extent? If yes, why isn't it specified on their menu or advertised on their website? If no, why do the employees say "yes I'm pretty sure it is organic" when I ask? One time I asked and the woman didn't know, she went back to ask someone else then returned and told me no, the corn products they use are not organic. The website describes the food as "all natural" but what exactly does that mean? If I'm going to eat tamales or corn tortillas I want to know that it's not GMO corn. Beyond being a quick, healthy stop for lunch, Mr Natural has some of the most flavorful & authentic Mexican food to be had in Austin. Some of the sauces that they use are absolutely amazing and remind me of those used is some restaurants in Monterrey. To top it off, they offer delicious gorditas and tamales - things you don't often see in your typical Tex-mex diner. Finally made it out to Mr. Natural this evening with Corinne, The Veggie Lover. After all the good word about this East Austin locale, we were quite excited to finally be patrons. Unfortunately, neither one of us was impressed. I write this with true fear, as I'm sure the cult of Mr. Natural followers will hunt me down, but I must be honest. It just wasn't that great. (Side note: If you rely on caffeine to function, be ready to go through withdrawal. And yes...I get it...the concept of the place is that it's NATURAL...I'm just saying!) Anyway, I got the veggie burger, feeling obligated to try a staple entre at a place heralded for its fresh, all-natural ingredients. Don't tell them I said this, but...well...it was kind of bland. They burned my bun, put a dime-sized amount of mayo on my burger, and I had trouble finding the small, mushy tomatoes in the mass of iceberg lettuce. Corinne's veggie BBQ sandwich would cause you to jokingly say, "Want a little soy protein with your GALLON of BBQ sauce?" I am being harsh --- Corinne enjoyed the sauce and I will say that their salsa is very, very good. Maybe we ordered the wrong things...after all, it is the Mexican portion of their menu that is most talked about. I'm sure a few more trips will be necessary, but first impressions are everything... I came into Mr. Natural a skeptic. Vegetarian Mexican always seemed like such an oxymoron. Borderline blasphemy even. The reviews on here are incredibly mixed, so for the longest time I could never convince myself to trek over and actually try the place for myself. Well, I finally did today and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The Soya Guisada completely won me over. If I didn't know better I could have easily been fooled into thinking I was eating real beef. No one can make carne guisada like my grandpa, but this was pretty damn tasty. And if Mr. Natural is to be believed, I'm assuming healthier. The chili/tomato sauce with carrots was a bit sweet, which some may not like but I enjoyed the added flavor. Rice & beans were standard fare. Being the first time I'd ever even tried soy protein I was pleased with how good the dish was. On the way out, I couldn't resist the bakery. I'm a sucker for pumpkin empanadas and those bread things that are shaped like pigs - I've been a fan of those pigs since I was a tiny boy, so I know a good pig bread. Honestly, this was probably one of the best pigs I have ever eaten. All of their baked goods (as far as I could tell) are made sans eggs and butter so they come out less doughy and a bit softer (and crumblier). All the better. I have also discovered that soft Pig bread dipped in coffee makes for one hell of a dessert. I, a former skeptic and doubter of "healthy Mexican food," am now a fan of Mr. Natural. I'm not averse to dirt or anything, but the doors really could have used a squirt or two of Seventh Generation cleaner and a vigorous wipedown. Plans fell through for us our first full day, so we quickly needed to regroup and come up with an alternative. Yelp iPhone app to the rescue! We typed in "vegan breakfast" and bam, Mr. Natural popped right up. What did we have to lose? The place is part charming cafe, part health food store. I ordered the cowboy scramble, which had tofu, black beans, and a slew of other great ingredients in it (and ask for avocado on top...you won't regret it). My partner had the tofu migas and thoroughly enjoyed them. After the meal, we explored the store and spotted a wall of teas and jarred herbs. I came here to lunch with a few friends. I got the lunch special for $8.99. It comes with a salad, main dish, 2 sides and a tortilla. Their lunch specials change daily and it's posted online! The reason why I gave it 3 stars is because the food wasn't that flavorful. The potato salad was good though. Probably my favorite thing on the plate. I got the bean and cheese tamale and the jalapeño and cheese tamale as my main dish. Both were dry. My sides included rice and a bean and tofu gordita. The rice was overcooked and not seasoned well. At my house everyone except the dogs is either vegetarian or vegan and we think Mr. Natural is nom nom nomity nom good. It always makes me happy to eat tasty, not-too-healthy vegan goodness, plus this place is cheap and super fast and has a patio. The lunch special is a good deal...try the mole enchiladas, the tofu and black bean gorditas or the tacos with potatoes and soyrizo. They're all really fantastic. (Seriously, three tacos, salad, two sides, salsa and tortillas for like $7 or $8. It's totally a deal). The kiddo likes beans, rice and tamales. We both love the aguas frescas. We're not so much into the weird ersatz meat products, but the Le Boyfriend has reported positive things about the faux-beef fajitas. This is my new favorite place in town. Such a great vegetarian menu with alot of cool options that change daily. The cafeteria style set-up and friendly staff always make this a fast, fun place to go for a healthy lunch or afternoon meal. Ive never made it in past about 3:00pm so I can't promise dinner is as good as lunch, but for only $6.99 its worth a shot. Try the burrito, cabbage roll, enchiladas or heck any of the mexican dishes. My family loves this restaurant. It's our go to for dinner together. My meat loving 13 year old craves their veggie burger, and claims it's the #2 best burger in town alongside a meat patty in the lead. I love getting the veggie tortilla soup, and the smoothies. We ordered several kinds of tacos and avocado toast. It was all very yummy! The salsa is spicy with a good flavor. The drizzle on the avocado toast really brings out the flavors. And the grilled tomatoes were so flavorful. We finished our meal with the chocolate donuts. A trip to Mr. Natural would not be complete without their moist chocolate donuts. First off I want to make a distinguishment; there are TWO locations, one on SOUTH LAMAR one off of e 2nd street and Chicon. I'm reviewing both. The one off e. 2nd street I do not reccommend. For some reason the food doesn't taste as good (perhaps the difference in cooks?) and the ambience is very dark, not well lit, and doesn't feel good to me. SOUTH LAMAR i write in ALL CAPS because it's GREAT. That's right bitches, I said GREAT. This is coming from a fool who used to work there in 04, got fired from there, and in spite of the awkwardness STILL keeps eating there for years after. Vegan Tres Leches dessert fantastic. Albondigas, Milanesa, hardshell tacos with veggie chorizo amazing. Their vegan potato salad is very delicious. Aqua fresca drinks tasty, (my favorite flavor is spinach pineapple-sounds crazy but it tastes great). It takes a little getting used to because you have pick up your own silverware, and order from the cashier instead of table side but the food is good, the portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. There's no prima donnas in the staff, maybe some in the crowd but the atmosphere rocks. Can't say that about 2nd street locations. i highly recommend the South Lamar location, right off of bluebonnet lane. When I ordered from the girls at the counter, who seemed wholly annoyed that I asked questions since I'd never been there before, I got nervous that it wouldn't be as excellent as I'd always been told. That concern was reinforced when I tried my horchata and didn't really like it. But, they had pumpkin empanadas, I told myself, so it would be worth it either way. And the horchata wasn't *bad*, it just was different than the usual, and had an extra ingredient I wasn't a big fan of (maybe it was made with only rice milk, as it should be at a vegan-friendly place). But once I got my salad and grilled veggie sandwich with cheese, I understood all the praise. The food was just slammin'. Even if I'd gotten terrible service, instead of just so-so, it would've been completely worth it. I'll be back, regularly. read more

Oh my GOD! There is a Mr. Natural on the east side? No WAY! How did I not know that? I went OUT OF MY WAY last night to visit the south location after a yoga class and had the bbq tofu (hell yeah), brown rice (uh-huh), scalloped potatoes (sweet jesus) and carrot-pineapple salad (dios mio!). I like all of the aguas they have to offer and I like the elderly gentleman that rings you up and makes conversation about the weather. I especially like all of the baked goods, MOST especially the orange-cranberry bread and sweet potato empanadas. I like the people who serve you food. They're really nice and don't have sleeve tattoos and septum piercings and wear shirts that declare their veganism/political beliefs. In fact, I'll bet they eat meat. I'll just bet they do. But they work at Mr. Natural because it's really f-ing good and good for ya, too! (I'd go here before Mother's any day.) In a word, yum. Don't come here for high-class dining. Do come for laid back, casual enjoyment. And walking around all the weird vitamins is kinda fun, too! I had been to "the other one" (on SoLa) a few times, but not to this one. The east side one is much better, ambiance-wise. I wasn't quite sure how the ordering process was supposed to work (we were there for a late Saturday lunch), but there was no line and we figured it out. No silverware was out and the woman behind the counter seemed a little put out that I asked for one. My friend and I both got the lunch plate. It was refreshing to get so many items, and not be so stuffed afterward. Servings were very good--not HUGE! Lunch plate: salad, main and 2 sides. I had the spinach salad with the avocado dressing. The tamales were good, but slightly dry. Rice and beans were delicious. For dessert, I got some sort of huge chocolate muffin thing. It was so dark and decadent. It was moist and my favorite part of the meal. I could really taste the cocoa powder in it. My friend got some sort of "energy bar," full of interesting flavors. I didn't like it as much, but it was loaded with coconut, not my favorite. You've gotta go just for the experience. It was good to eat so much food that was healthy and didn't feel like it was laden in grease and fat. read more

Mr. Natural is one of those places that I REALLY have to be in the mood for. As far as vegan food goes, it is so-so. Not bad, not good. If your highschool cafeteria suddenly went vegetarian, Mr. Natural is EXACTLY what they'd serve, (unless you grew up somewhere really white, like Connecticut, and then it would probably be the same sans tamales). I give Mr. Natural 3 stars because there truly aren't enough vegan restaurants in Austin, but if the world was as veggie friendly as it is in my dreams, I think Mr. N's would be a big pass for me. The upsides are that the staff is REALLY friendly (and sometimes really attractive), the location is great, they have a mini health food store, and vegan soft serve is delicious. My coworker and I are slowly working our way through restaurants in walking distance of our office. We'd planned on Quickie Pickie, but we got there to find that the kitchen is closed on Mondays. So we kept walking and ran into Mr. Natural. Interesting. This place is so interesting. From the outside it doesn't look anything like a restaurant, we had to pace a bit before we decided to walk in. There's a large building that I think is the grocery and the restaurant is in a small building next door, it was a little confusing. The place is set up Luby's style, you walk your tray down the line and point to what you want. We each got the lunch special which included a salad, a main dish, and two sides. I got the vegan potato salad, two vegan tamales, a side of rice, and a gordita. I was honestly pretty apprehensive. This is Mexican food. Mexican food without meat and with very little cheese (only in my gordita). What what what? I grew up in Texas, in a small town where eight of our ten restaurants were Mexican. I grew up on TexMex. So TexMex without meat is a totally foreign idea to me. But, the food was pretty good. The potato salad was ok but I probably wouldn't order it again. The rice was pretty standard and the tamales were good, I liked the sunflower seed one much better than the veggie. My favorite part of the meal was the gordita. I got the bean and cheese option and it was pretty yummy. The best part of this meal was the price. We got so much food for like nine bucks and that's including tax. read more

I had the unfortunate experience of being dragged back here by family members, for a "Thanksgiving dinner". As I expected, it was another sub-par dining experience. I would not recommend this place to anyone, vegetarian or otherwise. Here are a few reasons why you should *not* eat at Mr. Natural: * Overpriced. We paid $11 a plate for a meager cafeteria-style Thanksgiving dinner. * No table service. That's right, you'll be paying those high prices for lukewarm steam-table buffet food, and bussing your own table to boot! * No silverware!?! This place is too cheap to even provide a butterknife to cut your food with. All you get is a napkin with a fork wrapped in it. * Food tastes mediocre at best. The fake turkey was rubbery and tasteless, portions were small, and the sweet potatoes were completely cold. The carrot cake we had for dessert was dry and tasteless as well. On other occasions when we've come for the mexican-style food service has been extremely slow, and the food cold as well. I have been a vegetarian for most of my life, and hope I never have to eat at Mr. Natural again. I will concede one star because some of the baked goods are fairly edible. If you want a pleasant dining experience, good service, and tasty food, try Kerbey Lane instead! They have plenty of good vegan and vegetarian dishes. read more

Food takes years to come out even when there are no other orders and the place is completely empty. I ordered a tortilla soup to go... took about 25 minutes to get out the kitchen. Mr. Naturals is awesome! I'm from Austin and I've gone here for years! The lunch/dinner special is the way to go. Period. A choice of salad, one entree, and two sides. The gorditas are amazing and the tamales are flavorful even if they don't have meat. I always want to lick my plate where the beans were but instead I use one of the hardy corn tortillas. It's not that over priced considering you know it's all natural, good for you, and finger licking good food. I'm not vegetarian but I do understand our decline of nutrition from the over abundance of protein and the lack of fruits, veggies, and whole grains in the average Americans diet. In looking for a vegetarian place with unique and exciting food, this place came up as a suggestion. When our cab drew up next to it, we were skeptical, but willing to give it a go. Luckily, we were quite happy with our visit over all. A natural foods store combined with a vegetarian friendly restaurant? Sounded odd to us at first, but makes sense if you actually think about it. The menu was large, and well marked with vegan items, items that COULD be made vegan, and gluten free selections, so good for lots of different dietary needs. However, I should not that the spicy signs on menus in Austin, in our experience, do not actually mean spicy. I hesitantly ordered the tortilla soup, which had a flame by it, just cause I wanted to try vegetarian tortilla soup. It was ok, but had almost not flavor to it. My tofu was good, but way too much of it, and my partner and friend both got the relleno, which they said was good. Add Horchata and changing flavors of Aqua Fresca, as well as extremely affordable prices, and I'd say while not my all time favorite vegetarian restaurant, this is certainly a good option for vegetarians and vegans in Austin. read more

Visiting from Brooklyn - were you can get any vegan food you want. Still haven't had tamales in 7 years. These tamales, mole enchiladas and fajitas blew my face off they were so delicious. And the deserts! I ate myself into a food coma, but because it's all fantastic quality and healthy I was up from my coma, ready for the world, in ten minutes tops. Brought a life long Texan with the proclaimed favorite food of BBQ, he scarfed down the vegan fajitas and kept talking about how delicious they were for the rest of the evening. The only reason Mr. Natural is getting 4 stars is because I think the layout needs a little work. I don't think it leads to great service. It seemed awkward for the servers. And there's probably not much demand for it, but I would appreciate a better hot tea selection. I always like hot tea with a big meal. read more
