It's that time of year again, so I ordered another strawberry cake for my little granddaughter's birthday party. I ordered a 9" round and it seems that the price has gone up a lot; this was a bit over $60 and I think a quarter sheet from last year was about that price. Besides the cost of the cake, it seems that there weren't a whole lot of strawberries between the layers either; the berries were sliced very thin and there were spread out more. The whole effect was a cake that was not as tall and definitely not as tasty as in the past. Still, the cake itself was light and not overly sweet and there are no regrets in getting it. Just a word of warning, it's cash only and I think you have to go in person to order a cake in advance and pay for it. It's okay for me since I live nearby, but I can see how it would be really inconvenient for others.
Need a bakery with yummy buns! This is your place! They have all sorts baked fresh daily. They are no-nonsense quick service to get you in and out. Nothing special about the space. It's actually kinda narrow so you'll have to squeeze by people if there's a small line. They have fresh made egg tarts and Portuguese egg tarts too. I ate mine right away before I could take a picture. I like the curry beef puff, they have a bun version of it too. Pineapple buns, cocktail buns, and on and on and on.... Try them all!
Came in the morning around 9:00 am! It was empty on a Monday. The smell of fresh asian bread and treats was amazing. Parking: limited in the front unless you find street parking in the residential side Payment: Cash Only This place is definitely a hole in the wall and they make everything fresh. I loved the pineapple bun, baked pork bun and the egg tart. Pineapple bun: 4/5 - standard but tasted amazing when it was hot Baked pork bun: 4.5/5 - really good! It isn't as sweet as the ones I've tried in southern california Egg tart: 4.5/5 - so good when it was hot! I love how thin the skin was and there's a lot of the custard filling. It had a strong taste compared to the egg tart I tried elsewhere in SF
Came here for the egg custard tarts and they were exactly what I was looking for. They have a normal style and a Portuguese style ranging between $2.50-$2.80, I believe. Service is quick in this no-frills, classic Chinese style bakery. They also had an assortment of cakes and other pastries. CASH ONLY is the only downside to this spot. I hardly carry cash anywhere nowadays.
Popped in this morning and bought 1/2 dozen traditional custard egg tarts. $2.50 each. The Portuguese ones are $2.95 each The bakery will be on vacation starting 2/17/26. Reopening 2/25. #8 on my eat local 'hood list 2026.
I highly recommend anyone coming to SF, to visit this bakery! Paid street parking there are meters around the block. There is usually a line, but it moves quickly. My favorites are + original egg tarts (The egg tarts are incredible!) + Portuguese egg tarts + pineapple bread (bo lo) + baked char siu bun + taro bun
Mr. Bread is known for its Portuguese Egg Custard Tarts and Egg Custard Tarts. So delightfully yummy! I reheated them at home at 350-370 degrees for 10 minutes. As of 12/8/25, it was $2.30 for a regular Custard Tart and $2.60 for a Portuguese Custard Tart. I think the Portuguese tarts did taste a little better. Go early enough so they don't sell out. I went 12:15 PM on a Monday and had no trouble. After we entered, a line formed behind us. However, after eating lunch in the area, there wasn't a line after 1 PM. CASH ONLY. Closed on Tuesdays. Bakery is a Chinese dive. Narrow customer area barely wide enough to form a single line. Walls are covered in paper ads, menus, and pictures. I was too panicked and crowded to take pictures, focused on paying and getting out. Besides custard tarts, there are other Chinese pastries. You can also order a cake here. Mr. Bread is located on Taraval St near 19th Ave or Highway 1. You need to find street parking. Buy a lot of custard tarts! They are comforting and addictive.
The first day of December and it was a sunny day so I went on a Holiday stroll in the Sunset Strip of San Francisco also known as the Sunset District. San Francisco is one of the best places to get a dessert. I am in search of a tart which has its origins in Portugal but has spread to countries like Brazil and China. These egg tarts are also known to be from Hong Kong and Macau and part of Cantonese cuisine. The search for the best Portuguese egg tarts and Pastel De Nata has me going to Taraval street .The Sunset has lots of places which serves and egg tarts such as Pineapple King and Sunset Bakery. One place which has one of the best in San Francisco for Portuguese tarts is Mr. Bread. This spot also serves lots of pastries such as egg tarts and buns . Although I am of Portuguese heritage and the Portuguese tarts was on my mind I had to try their buns. I like all types of buns but the curry beef buns were the best I had in San Francisco. It was savory and the buns were soft. So delicious. I then had the Portuguese tarts and I would say it's my personal favorite. It was not too sweet and it was fresh and velvety. It was smooth and tasty. It wasn't flakey like most of them in SF. This place is also the go to place to get customize cakes. They are closed on Tuesday and it's cash only . I now only wonder where is Mrs.Bread ? They have the Cream, Curry Beef, Pineapple, Taro , Tuna "Bun " and other pastries which are well "done" and the Portuguese egg tart is my favorite "one " in San Francisco as I enjoy the First day of December on Cyber Monday at the Sunset strip under the "sun" "Mr. Bread "has a good bakery "spread "go here you won't be "misled "when it comes to Portuguese tart the taste is miles "ahead "I feel fortunate to live in San Francisco the place I was Born and "bred "
I usually frequent here for their cocktail bun when I'm broke. Costs like $1.60. They even sell Chinese newspapers for $1. Bakery business is tough, a lot of overhead and little profit so support locally. Recommend with my utmost respectful regards.
I've heard good things about this place so decided to stop in to try it out. Egg custard tart: the crust was thin, yet buttery and flaky, however, the custard was not as smooth as other places. Pineapple bun: decent, but I've had better. Wife cake: flaky crust with a good amount of filling Overall, it was good, but I still prefer the bakeries in SF Chinatown in terms of taste and price. That said, this location is much more accessible, especially when it comes to parking. Friendly service. Cash only.
people love to coming to this bakery for portuguese tart , It's very good. I also like beef curry bun , come early they may so out
Cash only. They are known for the Portuguese egg tarts, but I actually really loved their ham and egg buns. I like how the bread is soft and sweet, and the ham/egg is salty. It makes a good combo. You can buy them à la carte, but remember to bring cash. The line can get long, but I think it moves fairly quickly. Great Chinese bakery in the sunset. (I tried the Portuguese egg tarts years ago, so I can't remember how good they were.)
Small mom and pop Cantonese Chinese bakery in the Sunset that reminds you of the early 80's/90's 25c cocktail buns and pineapple buns. I normally get a couple of each, The prices are prices are now at the 2025 rate but the taste is really good still. This place has no seating so it's just a takeout spot. They also have a small fridge with pictures of cakes but I have never tried one. They also make both po tat ( Portuguese custard tarts) and dan tat ( regular custard tarts) . Both are good but I prefer the classic dan tat just because the skin is a little more fluffy and less crispy and the custard is more moist. People order half or dozens of both so you can't go wrong. On the weekends there is usually a line and if you go during the peak time you might have to wait for fresh tarts. They will tell you to come back in 15-20 mins if they are out but will save them for you if you prepay. Cash only spot so bring those dollar bills ( a $20 probably) since you'll get a variety of items here. TLDR; All items are pretty good here. Small lines are expected on weekends and possibly waits for tarts if you going during a peak time.

In the streets of the sunset district in San Francisco is Mr. Bread Bakery. This quaint mom and pop shop has one of the best Egg Tarts I have ever had. I ordered three of both their Portuguese, and Chinese style egg tarts, and both left a very lasting impression on me. The Portuguese egg tart was rich, creamy, and lightly caramelized on top. And the Chinese style custard had that classic silky smooth filling. Perfectly sweet without being to overpowering, a melt in your mouth texture. Both encased in their buttery flaky crusts that made every scrumptious. If you are ever in the area I cannot encourage you enough to stop by and grab yourself a sweet treat or two. Or three. read more
3.5 based on custard tarts Egg custard tart: $2.30 3.5*. Crust was ok, less flaky than GG. Custard was good. GG bakery is the dan tat OG tho in Chinatown which is challenging to get to & well worth the hassle. Portugese custard tart: $2.60 solid 3*. Crust was ok, different than egg tart. Custard was good, a bit too sweet for my taste. Both were kept on a warming tray, which is a plus bc custard tarts are best warm. read more
11/2/2024 Dan Tat, egg tarts, or custard tarts as we call them; are nostalgia in a bite. These eggy sweet goodness are confections that can be found in many bakeries nowadays. These question is; how many are them that are actually good? Where: this hidden gem is located in the Sunset District on 19th Avenue and Taraval. This district is primarily an enclave for the Chinese. One would say that this is a classic mom and pop run establishment akin to a hole in the wall. This bakery is also not hyped, meaning it flys under the radar. What: this bakery produces most classic Chinese baked goods from cream cakes to baked baos, but I came here for one thing only, or two since their egg tarts come in two varieties. The tarts: the classic dan tart has a crisp shell that's lavished with lard (yes, lard as opposed to butter), and has a jiggly custard that's sweetened. The second type of egg tart, comes from Portugal, where the custard is browned, and the custard is more jiggly. The comparison: San Francisco has another bakery famed for their dan tats, but that they're not always in operation. How do the two compare? Golden Gate Bakery's dan tats, like the macaron, prices go up annually; rich buttery shell, and jiggly custard that tastes like condensed milk. Mr. Bread's dan tat is similar, though the shell isn't as buttery; but the size, flavor, and overall lower price point - makes their dan tat a worthy contender. Is the hype real? Those looking for a Golden Gate Bakery dan tat will certainly like those from Mr. Bread. As this bakery flys under the radar, there's not so much of a line here. Do bring cash as there is no credit or tap to pay options. Final Thoughts: I bought a box of 9 to fill, 4 classic and 5 Portuguese - to share and to devour myself. I left two to chill overnight and reheated it; I was impressed as the tart remained fresh tasting. Other bakery dan tats that I've had, the texture and flavor goes south overnight. Definitely worth visiting if ever in the area. read more
A solid asian bakery! and nearby stern grove festival area. cash only and the owner was very kind. - portugese egg tart was delectable. flavor was on point! - banana cakes were very interesting and new to me. slightly sweet and doughy, but addicting - taro and beef curry pastries were classic like what you'd expect but nothing mind blowing read more

I recently discovered this spot thanks to my sister, who's been a regular for a while. Knowing my love for egg tarts, she insisted I try their Portuguese egg tarts. When I arrived, there was a line out the door--a good sign for any bakery. The place is small, with a standing area and no tables, so it's more of a grab-and-go kind of spot. The staff was friendly and helped me with my order, even though I arrived around 3 PM and most items were sold out. Fortunately, they had another tray of egg tarts available. After trying numerous bakeries, I can confidently say these egg tarts are among the best. I'd rate them a solid 5/5. I'll definitely be back and can't wait to share this hidden gem with others. Only con is that parking can be tough so make sure to be prepared for that. read more
I am surprised that I like their bread the least given they are Mr Bread... I got a BBQ Pork Bun, a Curry Beef and a Hot Dog Bun. Ended up discarding the breads and eating the fillings with bread from AA Bakery. Mr Bread's bread dough could use some salt and sugar to enhance its flavor. Their Egg Tart is better, especially because of the crispy shell. However, I personally prefer the egg tarts from Yummy Bakery. These are less custardy and can use more crust. The Portuguese Egg Tarts are worth trying. One thing that make these special is the caramelization in the crust in addition to the tart tops. However, I prefer the ones from Suzanne's in Millbrae since these are too sweet. read more

A classic staple of this area! The curry buns are my favorite! Note, cash only! Bakery on Taraval Street just off of 19th Avenue. Parking can be tough, but the lines attest that this place is worth it. Besides the curry buns, the chashu is good, and so are most of their other offerings. Note, the egg and ham now has a really small slice of ham (a coworker thought they had forgotten the ham entirely), but it's in there :-) read more

Office potluck and I was asked to bring in a dessert. Picked up coconut, egg, and Portuguese tarts from Mr. Bread. Picked them up at about 7:30am, and they were still warm. No line when I first arrived, but line was there as I was leaving. Never had the coconut tart before - full of coconut. My fave is still the Portuguese and egg tarts. $2.30 for egg or coconut. $2.60 for the Portuguese tart. read more

After several friends have recommended that I try Mr. Bread for its egg tarts and BBQ pork buns, I've had it on my to-try list. Since I'm rarely in the southern part of the Sunset District, I haven't had a chance to try until this past weekend. I was there on Saturday at 3:30 and found parking almost in front. With no line of customers and given the time of day, I had a fear that things would be sold out. The display cases have pastries, muffins, tarts, cookies, cakes and eggs tarts. On the menu board, they list all the buns they sell, sweet on the left and savory on the right. I ordered egg tarts, Portuguese egg tarts and BBQ pork buns. Picked up some pineapple custard buns for a relative. Couldn't get the wheat buns for them as they were sold out. About 15 minutes later, I tried the egg and Portuguese egg tarts. They were still warm. The crust to a good egg tart is having a golden and flaky crust and these hit the mark. The filling were smooth, eggy and creamy. The egg tart was a little less sweet than the Portuguese tart, which probably has more sugar to allow for the browning of the custard tart. But they both were not overly sweet. The Portuguese tarts are $2.60 and the egg tarts are $2.30. Are the infamous ones in Chinatown at $3.75 60% better? Ah, no. The BBQ pork bun had good amount of filing. It had more of a savory taste and didn't have the bbq pork sweetness flavor, which I prefer. I'm glad I finally made it here and enjoyed the delicious egg tarts. If in the area, I'll be stopping by again. read more
No fuss, small bakery that delivers amazing baked goods! We were here for the Portuguese Tarts (Pasteis de Nata) originally but ended up getting their Sponge cake too. The tarts are delicately sweet and delightfully flaky. The sponge cake had amazing texture and was not too sweet. It's a cash only place and service was quick and good. read more

My coworker recommended this place and it's a hidden gem but SO good! I normally like the Dan tat but got the Portuguese egg tart and the custard center was perfectly sweet and creamy and the outside was really flaky. I'm a fan of the Japanese karepan (curry bread) but I may like the curry buns more than curry bread now. The filling had SO much meat and lots of pepper so may taste a little spicy to some on a warm and sweet bun. I'm not usually around this area of SF but can't wait to come back! read more

This is my family's and I's go-to spot for egg tarts! They are your typical Chinese bakery, so you better know what you want by the time you get to the front of the line and have cash in your hand bc they will be shouting "what do you want?" The store is also small and cramped so leave your kids and partners outside! The egg tart (regular) is $2.30 and is the best you can get in the Bay without breaking your wallet! It's always served toasty warm with a not so sweet gooey custard. We always make the 1 hr drive from SJ here just for these delicious yellow things! The only downside is that they don't pick up their calls on busier days to order ahead :/ Nevertheless, the best in the bay! read more
Oh, my word! I am so sorry I didn't find Mr. Bread sooner, but am incredibly excited to have them on my radar now! I stopped in on a drive back from SFO to Marin when I saw on Yelp that they had both pork buns and Portuguese egg tarts (my girls' favorites). What I didn't fully appreciate until I walked in was how much else they had to offer! With nearly every item costing between $1.20 and $2.00, I ended up bringing home a huge box of items to try; more than half a dozen flavors of buns plus both types of egg tarts (Portuguese and traditional). The dough on all of the buns was some magical blend of pillowy on the inside with a durable skin on the outside with just the right amount of sweetness. My husband and girls' favorites were the pork buns and black bean almond buns; I, on the other hand, could eat the curry beef bun every day for a week and still go back for more. They are cash only, but there's a bank two doors down. I'll be back again and again for sure. read more

I wrote a lot of reviews but rarely do I declare "This is da place!!!". Well, good HK style milk tea can be found in many bakery in SF, theirs are good too and I usually came here for Portuguese egg tart and milk tea, this time I tried something I'm gonna have to declare... One of the best Curry beef bun I've had! The bread is very soft, curry beef flavor just right. A little bit of a kick on the curry. I've had their pineapple bun but I prefer another place in sunset. It's pretty good. Just the other one use more butter on the buns. read more
Came here specifically to try their Portuguese egg tart, and it was pretty good. I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had, but definitely one of the better ones I've had in the Bay Area. Their egg filling tastes legit; however, the crust is not as flakey as I'd hoped for. The one bakery in San Jose has the best crust, but their filling didn't taste good.... I wish I could combine the two and it'd be perfect! We also tried an eclair. $3 for a small eclair that tasted mediocre. I would recommend just stick to the Portuguese egg tart. Will I come back if I'm craving Portuguese egg tart? For sure! But would I go out if my way to come here? No thank you~ read more

Do they have birthday cake?
Is the place still open? I've been calling since yesterday and no one picks up. I live an hour and half away I wanted to know how much is the Portuguese egg tarts are and place an order. Anyone can help? Thanks
yep! they are open but they get really busy in the early mornings. i recommend calling maybe at 9 or 10am (?) when the rush is over. they do take bigger orders via the phone so make sure to call them for that (the number on google is correct)…
Does anyone know if they are open? I drove by today and no lights were on and doors closed. I couldn't stop to see what the signs on the door said.
They are closed today and will reopen tomorrow
Is Mr bread open now , May 17?
As of 3/18/2020, can anyone confirm that Mr. Bread is open during SF's shelter in place order?
I was disappointed to find that the business is currently closed from April 1st to April 30th. There is a sign on the door.
Can anyone please give me a working phone number for Mr Bread?
Hi, yes 4156816814
