Would recommend either making a reservation if you're trying to come on a weekend or coming earlier on a weekday since the restaurant is more of a lounge (as marketed) so there's limited seating and space. Though I can't speak for their drinks since I didn't try any when I went, if you're looking for a lounge-bar with good food, Movida is definitely one to check out! I will say since the "tables" are right next to each other, it gets loud and makes it difficult to carry conversation (-1 star), so I wouldn't suggest this place if you're looking to properly sit down and catch up with your friends over a meal. Now onto the food: HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you try the churros for dessert and their tacos! The churros here are probably one of the best restaurant ones I've ever had. They come out warm, perfectly coated with cinnamon sugar, and with a side of dark chocolate, which I actually preferred them on their own without too much chocolate. Also would definitely get their Saffron Chicken taco again! I thought it was really well-seasoned and love how it comes filled with guacamole, salsa, and microgreens. In terms of the overall food, it was unique, being that it is a Persian-Mexican fusion restaurant. I love how it is tapas-style, so you can try many dishes. (4/5) Jungla: This was a non-alcoholic drink made with pineapple, guava, and sour cherry! I liked the kick from the tart cherry; it paired well with the other dishes we ordered. (5/5) Movida Fries: If there's one thing you must order, it is the fries. I could not stop eating these because they were perfectly crispy and super addicting with the saffron salt. The fries were served with a chipotle aioli (which I used for other dishes, too, because it was too good) and were the perfect starter for the rest of the dishes that we ordered. (4/5) Pomegranate Adobo Chicken Taquitos: I loved the combination of the chicken's spicing with the pomegranate's sweetness. Before last night I'd give Movida 5 stars, so needless to say, I'm disappointed. My friends were coming into town and I recommended Movida for new year's eve. I went online to OpenTable and looked for availability, when that wasn't successful, I called. An Ai voice answered the phone (I would have MUCH rather talked to a real person) and accepted and scheduled my reservation for me. When the call was over, I was sent a link via text to input my information. I did, and the next day I got a confirmation. So to my absolute dismay, after my friends and I commuted to the city, excited to celebrate new year's eve, we arrive to a closed restaurant! I couldn't believe it, here we are, standing outside in the rain scrambling to figure out what to do last minute. There was no indication at all on OpenTable, Yelp, Apple/Google Maps, or their website that they would be closed. I shouldn't have been able to make a reservation in the first place. I think the incorporation of an Ai to answer the phone is a poor choice. This entire situation caused a lot of stress and was very upsetting. I hope to hear from Movida, thank you. read more

The servers were very friendly and the music was fun. The drinks and food were creative but a little hit or miss for my palate. For food, we got the chips and dip with walnut and pomegranate salsa. The pomegranate salsa was really good and unique but unfortunately the walnut salsa had too much vinaigrette and tasted more like a salad dressing. I liked the lavash! The kebab tacos were also innovative, and the tortilla tasted very homemade and fresh but the meat was drier than other kebabs at other Persian places. For drinks we ordered the Cama De Rosas and Leon Y Sol. The rosas drink was a bit too sweet and syrupy for me but the rose ice cube was really cool and impressive. However, I really liked the sol drink. It was very light and refreshing. To top it off we celebrated his birthday with the best baklava we've ever had! So overall, not a bad place. We came here for a Sunday brunch and was pleasantly surprised by how light the food was. Most of the time it feels like brunch places want to stuff you silly with fats but the menu here was very wholesome. The Persian breakfast's bread was amazing, we could not get enough of it. It worked really well with the feta and walnuts so I would highly recommend. The tostada was good but the lentils came off a little dry for my tongue but the full bite had a great crunch. The dessert was amazing. It didn't have any dairy (I think) and the rose and cherry flavor came through so clean, if there is anything we would crave, it would be this. SHISHI COCKTAIL $19 [Grapefruit-rose ketel one, coit caravan, lychee, yuzu, bergamot black tea] Absolutely LOVED this cocktail. It seems to be their most popular, because it comes with an edible bubble; if it happens to pop too early, the server will redo it for you. As for the taste, it was marvelous. I would definitely get it again. CHICKEN WINGS w/ POMEGRANATE BBQ $16 These seem to be their most popular appetizer. It comes with 6 wings covered in house made bbq sauce and pomegranate seeds. It was tasty and perfect for sharing. I do feel there could have been a wee less bbq sauce (maybe it was just my dish), but it was a very good appetizer I recommend. POMEGRANATE CHICKEN TINGA $8 Boyfriend wanted a simple chicken taco, and this taco is definitely it. It's large, simple, and tasty. JALAPEÑO BEEF & LAMB KOOBIDEH $9 This comes with lavash bread, veggies, sauce, sumac, and a delicious beef and koobideh (kebab). It's surprisingly light on the jalapeño, which I personally liked. Can't go wrong with a delicious kebab. STEAK ENTRANA $48 [Fusion skirt steak, Persian blue salt, Léon y Sol tequila butter, Gaufrette potatoes, crème fraîche, caviar bump] This is their most expensive item on their menu, and their most luxurious. The caviar is what really enticed me! The tequila butter was decadent, and the skirt steak was very tender. The saltiness from the cavair paired very well, though I preferred to enjoy the caviar by itself. A very bougie and delicious main! Was walking around the neighborhood and came here randomly on the first week they opened on a Thursday evening. They looked quite busy too, but the hostess offered us a seat at the bar and we just came in to have a few drinks. The bartender was very accommodating and even chatted with him about their opening and their story and interesting comcept of Persian and Mexican fusion. The cocktail drinks he made were unique and refreshing. Fast forward to a month later and we come back to try their dinner options. Who would of thought that this hip bar also had quite a menu. Unfortunately we didn't have reservations, but we were welcomed at the bar, and we were even surprised with a complimentary entrée by their talented Chef. We got to try their unique Chile Relleno with lamb, which was cooked wonderfully and definitely different from your other Chile Rellenos. We also ordered the saffron chicken skewers, which were deliciously tender and flavored perfectly. And even added the Chips and dip which came with two dips of your choice, which we chose the zaatar guac and walnut aleppo salsa. So glad we picked these and pretty much licked the dining bowls clean, and with their "in-n-out" like amazing fresh hot fries. The Aqua Chile, was unfortunately not the halibut that the menu stated. Instead we got scallops, which was good, but probably would of enjoyed the halibut especially with how the menu described the preparation for it. I would definitely recommend to make reservations if you're planning to have dinner here for a table. I was so excited to try this new restauarant since I love bother Persian and Mexican food, so bringing the two together was really intriguing! I later had the Mezcarnales--I'm not typically a big Mezcal fan, but this cocktail was actually my favorite of the three, with the smokiness of the Mezcal not too overwhelming. We ordered some starters--tortilla chips and crispy lavash with an eggplant salsa and queso. The queso was so perfectly spiced. The staff helped answer our questions and explain the options. We also ordered some "mini skewers," though they were each bigger than we expected for minis! The meat was cooked and spiced perfectly, and we dressed with some of our remaining salsas. My husband had the agua chile -- halibut in a savory and refreshing broth. He really enjoyed it and I sampled a bit too. So good. I ordered the pomegranate chicken tostada. The tostada was actually a crispy rice tahdig. It was such a nice combination of textures, with the crispy rice, the juicy stewed and shredded chicken, some creaminess from avocado and garbanzo beans, and the slight crunch from the pico de gallo and pickled onions. But my favorite flavor of the meal was dessert--I always love baklava, but this baklava was elevated to something truly special. ABSOLUTELY LOVED MY EXPERIENCE AND I WILL BE BACK. I want to start by saying that the restaurant itself is super elegant and perfect for a date night. It has a very modern chic feel to it and the decor is perfect if you're looking for a romantic date spot or dressed up night out with friends. We were seated at the bar and the staff was wonderful, giving loads of recommendations, very prompt with service, and proactive with checking in. We started with some chips and dip which was great - the chips were perfectly crispy, not too salty, and nicely complemented the dips. Then we had the Pomegranate Chicken Tostada and Short Rib Birria Tostada. Both were stellar with a deliciously crispy tostada base and flavorful meat and cheese toppings. The beef Birria especially melted in my mouth with flavors. I was also surprised by how tender the chicken was - usually chicken can be dry but they paired it very well with salsa and avocado. We ended the night with the Baklava (a recommendation from the staff) which was FANTASTIC. It was very flaky and the pistachio flavor came through nicely and wasn't overly sweet. A girlfriend and I went to Movida for girls night. We loved the decor and ambiance. The DJ was playing some good music. Our drinks were delicious. Food was great. Staff came by frequently to check on us. Can't wait to come back here for date night. read more

Food and service are extremely sub-par. The ambience is very cute/vibey, but the tables are small, the chairs are low and do not have backs on them. The employees are extremely rude and the food is very mehhhhhhh- not bad, but I didn't have a single item that was memorable. I'd much prefer to go elsewhere when dining in SF. read more

Movida serves Mexican dishes with a persian spin, I was intrigued to experience this unique fusion. We made reservations for a Tuesday night dinner and were surprised to see the place so busy. Everything was spectacular - the food/cocktails, music and the service. Our server checked in on our table multiple times and so did the owner. We were initially seated near a large (loud) group and were even moved to a better quieter table when one opened up so we could enjoy our dinner date. We got the pomegranate chicken tacos, chile relleno and the lamb koobideh and they were all great. The place is dimly lit, has a contemporary bar vibe, has live music and is great for date nights or drinks with friends. Will be back for brunch some time. read more
