The Daily Catch (original North End location)…read more This is the original Daily Catch, opened in 1973 by Paul Freddura in a tiny Hanover Street storefront. He started by frying local squid and calling it calamari at a time when most Bostonians still treated it as bait. In 1979 he and Maria turned the space into the Calamari Café, added an open kitchen, and began serving Sicilian-style seafood and pasta directly in the pan. More than fifty years later the same family still runs the place, and the original room remains deliberately small, cash-only, and first-come, first-served. I came twice in a row for the Monkfish Marsala over squid-ink pasta and would happily return for a third. The dish is rich, properly seasoned, and the black pasta holds the sauce without turning gummy. Unless your party fills an entire table you will almost certainly share with other diners. Dining alone the last couple of nights, I ended up talking with people from all over who were also in Boston on vacation. The shared tables add to the experience if you are open to it. There is nearly always a line outside. It is worth the wait. Be patient, bring cash, and watch the cooks work the pans right in front of you. This is still one of the most honest and flavorful seafood rooms in the North End. From what I understand, there's now a couple other locations; even one in Pasadena, CA...! I may eventually try the others, but the OG location always has a special place in my heart!

Go for the full size and not the half order. You will thank me for it later. We added scallops to it but honestly the pasta itself was so good already, the scallops didn't really add much to it even though they were very well cooked scallops. We also tried the Littleneck Siciliano (which is a plate of clams in a lemon? sauce) and that was also delicious. The last entree we tried was the linguine with clams and calamari. This was good but nowhere nearly as good as the black squid ink pasta. I didn't give this restaurant 5 stars because seating was cramped, very limited workers, and the wait was long for getting a table and food. I would avoid this restaurant for large groups or families with kids. I really wish they had a reservation system but I can see how hard that will be with the few workers they have. Oh, and don't forget your cash as it is CASH ONLY.
