Very yummy seafood! We waited about 45 min at 5 pm on a Sunday evening (holiday weekend). It was very cozy in there and we shared a table with other people but we didn't mind. We ordered a bunch of raw oysters, a lobster roll, a cioppino with lobster on top, and a burger (my husband wanted to try it). I think a lot of people, like myself, end up here after realizing that JAMES HOOK & CO closes pretty early. After a quick Yelp search, you find yourself looking at Neptune Oyster reviews. We ended up going from Fenway Park to Neptune Oyster by taking the train. When we arrived, we saw there was a substantial line. We ended up waiting about 1 hour and 20 minutes. They make you stand in line outside the restaurant and have signs that say, "Please don't block the other business entrances" and "Please stand behind this sign." Meanwhile, I'm thinking this is 2026 and Yelp must have some sort of online or phone number check-in system where they could text you once your table is ready. But I think, selfishly enough, the restaurant does this so other people walking by notice the line, and it acts as good advertisement for them. Anyhow, we decided to try the lobster roll with fries, six oysters, the bluefin tuna crudo, and their "clam chowder." Yes, I put "clam chowder" in quotes because it was more of a soup than a traditional chowder. I could have gotten past the texture, but it had no flavor and, unfortunately, we had to send it back, which I don't think I've ever done at a restaurant before. The oysters and tuna were pretty good, and I enjoyed them. The lobster roll was also decent, but nothing that I would rave about. Maybe that's my fault because, again, they are not a lobster roll restaurant. It says it right in their name that they're an oyster restaurant, so partially my fault. I was guided by Yelp when I searched for lobster rolls and thought maybe they were known for them due to all the pictures posted on their Yelp page. I visited Neptune Oyster on a Tuesday and found a line out the door, as expected. I thought the wait was just to put my name down, but the hostess came by asking everyone for the size of their party. Because I was a solo diner, I was able to skip the entire line and got seated at the bar right away! The restaurant was small and cozy, with a classic New England vibe. Sitting at the bar was awesome, because I had a front-row seat to watch oyster shucking. I was given a little checklist with the raw bar offerings, and chose one of each of the east coast oyster varieties (9 in total). I don't have a refined palate for oysters, so I can't say I fully grasped the listed tasting notes, but all 9 were fresh and delicious! I also got the hot Maine Lobster Roll, which was phenomenal. There was already a short line outside Neptune Oyster even before they opened on a Tuesday--so I was glad I arrived early! I started with littleneck clams and a glass of Lambrusco, then followed with the lobster roll--because it just felt mandatory while in Boston. It was a generous heap of buttered lobster on a pillow-soft brioche. There was so much lobster, I needed a knife and fork to tackle it. At $43, it's definitely a splurge, but absolutely worth it. We had never been so we popped in to ask about this.. when we were greeted we asked and the woman was incredibly rude stating "NO, we've never had that" and shut the door on us without even asking if we wanted to join for dinner. I'm not sure I've ever been spoken to that way by someone greeting customers for a dining experience. We were in fact looking for somewhere to have drinks and appetizers on an early Friday evening.. and due to this interaction, we took our business elsewhere. It was my first time in Boston, and I wanted to try the iconic lobster roll and seafood the city has, and Neptune Oyster did not disappoint! They don't take reservations and it's a small place so if you have about 8 people ahead of you, it could be at least a 30 minute wait. My husband and I had lunch here today and I really enjoyed the fish and chips (redfish) with a unique blended tartar sauce that tasted great. He had the cioppino, which was also good and beautiful in presentation, but he wished the broth was thicker. He also wished the clam chowder was thicker (but we realize a lot of others prefer a thinner broth). We sat at the counter and service was fast (hooks underneath the counter to hang purses or other items). It's a very small restaurant but we only had to wait about 8 minutes at 11am on a Monday (you wait outside and they will come out and let diners in based upon available seating). We saw others order oysters and they looked great, with a huge variety on the menu. I hear the ones get long here, so I suggest coming when they first open, if you can. read more

If I had only tried the oysters here I would have given it 5 stars Johnnycake- it tasted like a crab cake+ pancake which was crispy, however it was too much butter and saltiness for my liking. I've been to Boston countless times- for work and vacations, and always saw the line outside Neptune Oyster. So on my last trip, I told my husband it was time to find out what all the fuss was about. I'd read plenty of mixed reviews, but here's my take: Did I like it? Yes, very much. Would I wait in line again? Probably not- and not because it's not worth it (it definitely is), but simply because- for me- Boston has so many amazing spots to try. Still, I'm glad I finally checked this one off the list. For reference, I went on a Monday around 1 p.m. in late September and still waited about an hour. We sat at the bar- space is very limited, so it's not ideal for big groups. We ordered a bottle of Vinho Verde (perfect with oysters, by the way) and, of course, a dozen oysters- some of the freshest I've had on this side of the country. The grilled octopus was also fantastic; the butternut squash added the perfect seasonal touch. We stopped there since we wanted to keep exploring the North End, but everything around us looked delicious. My only downside was the service- a bit on the rude side. Of the many hyped up Boston spots I ate at during my September visit - Neptune truly lived up to it. Got there around 5 minutes before opening Friday; had to wait around 30-45 for a single bar seat. I'm honestly so annoyed at myself. I grew up in New England, in a seafood-loving family. I should have known better than to fall for a tourist trap. But it was my husband's first time in Boston, and I wanted to take him somewhere exciting. We went mid-afternoon on a Thursday. 20-minute wait, not bad. Note: this restaurant is TINY and they really pack diners in. We were seated at a little shared 4-top with another couple (no heads-up about sharing). The good: the oysters. Some of the best I've had, perfectly fresh and balanced. The rest: downhill. The clam chowder was a major letdown. I've eaten chowder my whole life (there were literal years of my childhood when it was my go-to order anywhere). I also love a briny, brothy chowder. It doesn't have to be thick. But Neptune's version was so thin it bordered on watery. Weak flavor, under-seasoned, and leaning way too heavily on dairy for depth. The clam pieces were minuscule and sparse. Just sad. Spanish octopus: two pieces. One good. One rubbery. The sour cream was nice; the red sauce was oddly tangy. And then came the famous lobster roll. $40 and wildly disappointing. Understuffed, with chewy, rubbery, even stringy lobster. I actually found tiny bits of what I can only describe as lobster gristle (??) stuck in my teeth hours later (I know, ew TMI). My husband wanted to send it back, but I hate complaining, so I picked at mine while we waited... and waited for our server to check on us. Fifteen minutes later, our server finally returned, and when hubby told her it was unfortunately pretty bad, she just said, "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," and walked away. That's it. No offer to replace it, no follow-up question about what was wrong, nothing. Five minutes later she simply brought the check. My husband pushed harder, asking if she could at least take half the lobster roll off since he didn't touch his half. She said she'd see what she could do, and from then on we got the silent treatment. She came back, wordlessly dropped a new check, took the card, returned card + receipt, walked away without so much as a thanks or bye. We still left a decent tip because she did take half the lobster off (and we didn't want her to think we were just cheap) but the whole experience left a bad taste (figuratively and literally). Showed up for lunch, there was a line out the door, to the next building entrance which wasn't too bad. We almost decided to leave and come back later hoping that the line would die down and good thing we didn't because it was even longer when we left. We had an oyster savant with us and let him do all the ordering which left us with the best meal I've ever had. Decision fatigue is a real thing and it was amazing to sit down and not look at the menu at all and blindly eating whatever was placed in front of me. Crudo - Bluefin tuna was like eating butter. My goodness it was so fresh and dunked in olive oil and a nice crunch with pumpkin seeds. Scallop was also incredibly delicious topped with sea salt flakes. Mussels - tiny bit of kick in the broth. We needed more bread to soak up that delicious broth. Lobster Roll - I couldn't leave Boston without eating a lobster roll and while it was incredibly delicious and very generous portion of lobster, this ended up not being my favorite thing. Glad I split this with my friend so that we could eat everything else. Oysters - I think we had 6 different types of oysters, all east coast except for 1. I love sauces, it's one of my favorite adds to a dish, but these oysters didn't need it. The brine-ness of them was more than enough flavor. I don't drink a lot anymore but eventually opted for a white wine to go with the meal and am so glad I did. The pairing of it with the food was perfect. If you're debating if you should stand in line.. I say do it, you won't regret it. It'll definitely be easier to be in line before they open. If you are a party of two, they may seat you at a table of 4 and have you share it with another party of two. It is okay, the immaculate oysters will distract you from the stranger sitting next to you. You order the oysters by marking on the sheet how many of each you want. Then the oyster shucker (huge shout out to them) will place it in the order that is on the sheet. The flavors described off to the right did not really correlate with what i tasted but the saltiness level was pretty accurate and helpful. The bottom line: going against the grain with a serving of sadly underwhelming here after the hour long wait. That said, it was more of a rollercoaster than a mediocrity train. Spot on were the bay scallops, slightly spicy and oceany sweet in a zobble-the-bowl chimmichurri. Though the wafer thin 1 slice/per person bread to dip was a little laughable. The crab bisque was rich and well crabbed, with a nice old bay-like spice level. The sea scallop dish had rave reviews and the plate was almost licked clean. But, it was sadly downhill from there. The crab salad was underdressed and when we asked they kept bringing more "almond vinaigrette" that was nuts in oil. (They had no vinegar when we asked). A must do in Boston! We found it online and then a friend who had been here before recommended coming here and ordering a Johnnycake. So we get there around 2:30 on January 1st. There's already a line in front of the restaurant. No reservation, it's a first come first served kind of place. Key: be patient. The line moves, maybe not as fast as you'd like it to. Be nice to the staff. We waited about 20 minutes before it was our turn for a table. They asked us if we wanted a counter or table - we preferred counter but were fine with anything. The space is small - 37 seats! It has some nautical decor, big fish-y things on the walls, lots of mirrors to make the space feel larger. There are hooks for coats and purses everywhere. Along the wall by the front door, under the bar counter. We got the best counter seats! Right in front of the oyster shucker! We could watch all the seafood action. So fun! "Angelfish" was our server and she was terrific! She helped us navigate the menu. We wanted a lobster roll but didn't know hot vs cold. She said cold is more common but Neptune is known for hot. A family member recommended I try this restaurant during my visit to Boston. They suggested that I come as soon as they open because wait times can extend to over an hour and no reservations are allowed. You're also waiting outside in line versus putting down your name and phone number and having them text you when your table is ready. I opted to arrive at the restaurant about 10 minutes before they open and I was maybe 15th in line. The line moved quickly and I was seated right away at the bar. My server at the bar was very kind, and I liked the way she interacted with other guests seated at the bar. But there was another employee who was rather blunt and direct when seating guests. I just felt a little bit off-put by the directness, but that could've just been my own interpretation. I ordered half dozen oysters, selecting the staff favorites from the menu. I also ordered the clam chowder and the scallops. I would skip the clam chowder in the future. While it is made to order and very fresh - including the clams - it was super brothy and not a chowder, but more of a soup. The scallops were phenomenal and tender to cut. I also loved the succotash base that it came with. However, the lobster roll on top didn't add anything to the dish other than decoration. I've experience the most racist treatment ever from Neptune's hostess! We were waiting in the cold in line for over an hour, the hostess informed us that we will be next to be seated but when she came back instead of calling our group she called another group that came after us. So I asked politely why-they get seated before us? The hostess deems that I shouldn't asked that question and said " you won't dine with us today, we won't serve you group" I asked what did I do wrong? she couldn't explain and said I was disrespectful. We tried the Wild Scallop with Swiss chard which was absolutely incredible in flavors and perfectly cooked. Groups of two and singles were let in before us due to table availability. For food, we got the scallops, ciopino, tartare, fries and Johnny cakes. My favorites were the scallops (so well cooked) and the tartare! I liked that seasonal ingredients were used in the scallops! I had REALLY high hopes for Neptune Oyster after seeing so much about it on Yelp / social media, but unfortunately my visit fell flat :/ We came in right as they opened; there was a line out the door about 15 minutes before 11 AM on a Monday and fortunately we were able to make it in the first group of diners. It's a cute, cozy spot in Boston's North End known for their seafood. Seating can be a lil tight so I wouldn't recommend it for any party larger than 6. We ordered a hot lobster roll, clam chowder, and oysters to share. The lobster roll and fries - good! I think I'd go for a cold lobster roll in the future though. The clam chowder, I wasn't a fan of. It was very watery and I felt like it lacked depth. The oysters were fresh and delicious. What made the experience also not-so-great was that the service was just very unwelcoming. At the beginning, it felt like our server was skipping our table when we were making eye contact / flagging them down to order. Despite being one of the first few groups seated, they skipped us twice for other parties. Once we were ordering, it seemed like our server was visibly annoyed when we'd ask questions. I'd probably opt to sit at the bar in the future since it seemed like the people there were having a better experience. We came for the lobster roll but the calamari stole the show! Neptune Oyster is one of bostons most hyped spots, & we waited an hour + to try it all. Great service, cozy vibes, killer calamari, mid chowder, & a lobster roll that was all about the quality but lacked in the bun and topping department. I really wished Yelp had .5 ratings because this would be more of a 3.5 instead of a 3 because the service and atmosphere were incredible! I don't think it's worth the wait but I do think it's worth coming back to try more of the menu. read more

On a recent business trip to Boston, my first time in the city, I decided to wander through the North End and check out Neptune Oyster after hearing so much buzz. The long line spilling out onto the curb seemed like a good sign. I waited about 45 minutes for a single seat at the bar. Inside, the space is small but charming, with a handful of tables and mostly bar seating. I started with a "cup" of clam chowder, though be warned, it is closer to a bowl. The broth is light and on the watery side, not the creamy style I personally prefer, but it was packed with clams, which I appreciated. Next up, I ordered a half dozen oysters from their impressive raw bar. They had the best selection I saw in the area, with more than a dozen varieties from all over, and I chose a mix of Massachusetts oysters for a local taste. All were fresh and delicious. Of course, I had to try the famous lobster roll, especially since almost every table inside had one. I went with the hot buttered version. While the lobster meat itself was sweet and flavorful, the roll was heavy on the bread, not particularly warm, and overpowered the filling. The french fries served alongside were barely warm and so heavily salted that I could not eat them, and I love salt. I ended up eating the lobster and leaving both the bread and fries behind. Service at the bar was friendly and attentive, and the wine list had some nice options. Overall, I am glad I tried it for the experience, but on my next trip to Boston I will probably explore other spots in the North End instead. read more
