Today, was the first Saturday in many weeks, where I had no obligations and could do anything my heart desired. I decided to go thrifting and consignment shopping. Moss Designer Consignment was my first stop. They generally have good selections at great prices especially if they are on the final mark down. Moss is an excellent luxury resale shopping destination. Located on South Lamar, the store feels more like a boutique than a traditional consignment shop. The layout of the store is spacious, open and beautifully organized to allow ease of browsing and shopping. The store has high-end women's designer clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories. You can pick up statement pieces at a fraction of the original retail price and feel confident in the quality of what you're buying. The staff was very helpful and friendly...opening up cases to allow you to see merchandise up close, at your leisure. They have an on-site authenticator of all their goods, which gives you a certain peace of mind that you are getting authentic pieces. While today, I did not find anything I could not live without, I will certainly pop in the future when I have free time to shop. read more

I have consigned as well as shopped at Moss since 2010 and while it is still one of my favorite stores, I have noticed a snootier change from the buyer. I will not mention her name but she is the short one with dark hair. I brought several items to consign and after spending 2 minutes looking at the items, her response was that "while your clothes are super cute, we don't carry those labels". I had to double check to ensure that I grabbed the right bag from my house and when I looked, I did indeed confirm that 5 out of the 6 items I actually bought at Moss! She was no longer in the front of the store but when I mentioned it to one of the younger assistants, she at least had the temerity to smooth things over by stating that they recently received an update regarding the items that can currently consign and the labels I had were most likely not on the list. Whether it was the truth or not, I did appreciate her professional as I did not want to cause a scene. read more

Coming to Austin with some intention of thoughtfully scowering the vintage/resale scene, I was delighted to discover Moss Designer Consignment. Of all the stops I made while in Austin, this is where I personally found the best available pieces in the sense of luxury quality, price and selection. Lexie was the nice sales person who was assisting us on the day with visited in a hands off, non-pressure kind of way. She was great. All the staff seemed professional and this store is distinctly upper end compared to the many in the Austin area. Once an item comes in to be put up for sale, the price is set and then goes down every few weeks if it is not sold. This step down approach to pricing is clearly identified on the price tags in the store by not only price, but the date the product came in and the dates the price will go down if not sold. Easy to understand as a consumer and I kind of liked knowing how long something has been hanging there (not sure why I felt this way, but I did).) Dressing rooms, a proper place for my husband to sit, nothing is cramped about this store. I walked out with a pair of Gucci sneakers, a long light blue tulle skirt (that is going to look amazing with a black blazer and my sneakers in Vegas some day soon) and a pair of Hermes slides that look barely worn. Great finds, excellent quality, luxury feel....I would absolutely come back if in the Austin area again. read more

I fully agree with the other negative reviews: I encountered the same condescending attitude from the shorter woman with long dark hair during my latest visit. From the very start of our interaction, her dismissiveness was completely unwarranted. I've consigned with them several times since January, and apparently, I missed a check. When I asked this woman why, I was told it had expired. Confused, I sought clarification, only to be met with a condescending response about how it's "our responsibility" to check our accounts for payments and that "most businesses' checks expire after 90 days." When I looked at my past checks from Moss, NONE of them state that the check expires after 90 days. When I pressed further about whether there was any system in place to notify consignors, I was told snidely, "It's in the contract." It's ironic for a luxury consignment store, whose business thrives on the loyalty of consignors, to treat them so poorly. The unclear stipulations and sneaky policies only suggest an intent to nickel-and-dime consignors at every turn: charging fees to reclaim items if they're priced poorly (their contract states they do pricing WITH the seller, but this has never been the case); using an outdated payment and consignor system that forces us to pick up checks in person (which, conveniently, seems to suit them because sometimes we may forget); and failing to notify consignors when payments are available for pickup. I've spent a significant amount of money here and have been a loyal consignor, but this is no way to run a business--especially when it comes to those who have supported you. Moss has a phenomenal selection of gorgeous pieces and in terms of special pieces is the first place I'd go, however I tend to agree with other reviewers that the customer service is lacking. I'm not sure how they decide who deserves help and who doesn't, but they completely ignored me and were super condescending when we did interact. No customer service--when when the store is empty. You can find lovely selections on your own, and if the piece has been there long enough, it will be marked down a bit. Nice. But be careful; I've walked out with pieces I've worn for several years and others have revealed fabric wear and strain once I get them home. The store's dim lighting can hide lots of flaws--not that this is intentional. It's a good idea to view your selections in the natural light coming through the front windows. It may save your from spending a few hundred dollars on something that will have no longevity at all. read more

Shop with caution, don't consign I've spent thousands at this store and have always been a friendly customer. When I brought back a pair of Rene Caovilla's that I discovered were fake (the sparkly sole paint wears down but real ones NEVER crack and peel), they treated me with suspicion and asked for a few days to authenticate. I said sure, as I knew they were fake (I usually buy from their boutique in miami). I was credited for the mishap, but knew not to trust the authentication going forward. When I brought things in to consign, they accepted my items. They misspelled my last name in their system and didn't onboard me to their site properly, causing some delay. They didn't even inform me that there was an approval process online for pricing. The pricing was mostly reasonable but I wanted to discuss pricing on a few thingsThey reached out to follow up on this but the first week my grandfather passed away and the next was thanksgiving. Moss was not the first thing on my mind. I gave them a call back to finally discuss and was informed that my clothes were at the counter to be picked up. No explanation on the call, just attitude. It was a trial run with them that did not pass for me. I'd rather just sell on Poshmark. read more

I went to Austin on vacation in November 2011 and MOSS was one of my favorite stops of the trip, and I still visit their blog. The store was curated extremely well and carries true designer apparel and accessories (Chanel, DVF, etc) I picked up a small coral over the shoulder Marc Jacobs bag for just over $100, I still love it and use it often when I go out. I wish I had had the spare cash to buy more, there were a lot of showstoppers here. If you are a tourist or local and enjoy discounted designer clothes and great service, you should drop by. If I ever come back to Austin, I will look forward to stopping at MOSS. read more

Shoplifting must be a big thing there. Never ever have I been treated like I was yesterday. Unreal. Was browsing the racks of teeny size 4 clothes trying to find something special. Flipping through the hangers, a silky blouse was starting to fall off the hanger. As I was fixing the sleeve back onto the hanger, the blouse next to it started to slip off of that hanger. That's what silk does, it's slippery. Since I am not an animal, I will rehang a thing if it falls. This sales girl came up to the rack and literally grabbed the hanger and the garment and walked away with both. Guilty until proven innocent is about the farthest thing from quality customer service. Nice faith in humanity there. Way to go. read more

I went in on a fluke the other day, and did end up finding something I liked. Rare, as most stores that consign designer never seem to have my sizes available. Alas, I lucked out. While that was pretty cool, and I was happy with my purchase, I was not impressed by the attitudes of the girls working there. I have no idea how they pick and choose who to provide customer service to, but despite my efforts to be nice, they just weren't going to reciprocate. Really disappointing, like the others who have commented to this unfortunate similar experience. This made me put down two additional items I was considering, leaving with just the one item and I won't be returning. I frequent Feathers, their sister store, and never have had any experience like this. They have always been nice and friendly. The ladies here, well, I found them quite rude and unhelpful. Unfortunate all around as they do have beautiful clothes, which I found to be in a variety of sizes, from the tiny to a beautiful size 12 Diane Von Fostenburg piece. Great finds at this upscale resale boutique in the heart of Austin. They always have a new selection of items every time I come in and they mark their items down every 30 days to keep the items cycling through. The place is extremely clean and set up like a swanky 5th Avenue store in NYC. If you are in the market for a diamond Hermes buckle, Christian Lounoutin pumps, Chanel leather and lace top, Valentino Rockstud bags or any high-end designer item at a great price; check this place out! AMAZINGLY WELL EDITED. I love this store and the girls that work there. Admittedly, they are very selective about what they accept, which allows you to use your time efficiently as you only have the crème de la crème to contend with. The girls that work there are on another level, style wise....I can see how that could be intimidating to some..I find it enlightening. They are sweet and not afraid to give you an honest opinion at the expense of losing a sale but always treat you with respect and courtesy. On one occasion I popped in during my lunch break and despite the fact that a famous sitcom actress was in one of the dressing rooms and the store was crazy busy; I was promptly ushered into a changing room and sincerely encouraged to take "all the time I needed". On a later visit I found out that the sitcom actress had dropped the near equivalent of a Ford Prius the day she was there. My largest purchase to date has been less than $500, and I received equitable attention and service...to me, this speaks volumes about the girls that work there and has made me a loyal customer. This is my new favorite store in Austin. They have some truly phenomenal pieces that you would be hard pressed to find in town previously. Moss made me a believer in Vintage. I've never done the Vintage thing...I had the snotty "i will never wear something that someone else has already worn" attitude towards fashion. This was sad b/c of my high desires for high fashion at the high prices = high credit card debt for not much bang. It's kind of amazing what they have - barely worn (and sometimes brand new w/ the tags and all) high end brands at the most amazing prices. Most recently, I've scored the softest, cuddliest canary yellow Magaschoni Cashmere sweater and Lewis Cho sundress for under $200 (for both pieces!). I take it back...I don't believe in vintage. I've driven past this place for years and always thought it was a new clothing boutique. The window displays are perfectly styled with seasonal, on-trend clothing, so how could you blame me? Turns out it's a fantastic resale shop. I would compare Moss to Wasteland in Los Angeles. Clean, well organized, full of great designer clothing. But Moss is even a little more upscale. The prices aren't cheap (I ended up buying a like-new Vince cashmere sweater for $85), but that's because of how expensive many of their items were to start with. I saw pieces from ACNE, Vince, Kate Spade, Chanel, Bergdorf Goodman, and many more. The shoes on display were all clean and in great condition. They also had quite a few high-end purses. I noticed at least some of their price tags included scheduled mark-downs. I'm not sure if that was across the board, but it was true for most of the items I looked at. Items that had been marked down had the price highlighted in red and were, for the most part, scattered throughout the racks. read more

I needed a dress for an Austin Fashion Week event and having just moved to Austin, I didn't really know where to go. I had bookmarked Moss after it was listed in Lucky, and I'm so glad I went. I'm in love. I was the only customer in there, and sometimes that can be an awkward situation. The two sales associates (one might have been a manager/ owner) were helpful and explained the store to me, but weren't overly enthusiastic, pulling things for me to try or hovering over me constantly. The selection is AMAZING. High end designers ranging from BCBG to Cynthia Vincent to Chanel. Expect to go and flip through everything in the store, because you want to be able to see every piece. Unlike a lot of consignment shops, it isn't overwhelming with too many items. There was just enough to look through for an hour and choose 6-8 pieces, most of which I really liked. I decided on a BCBG cocktail dress that still had it's original tag on. What was $128 was marked down to $57, and when I took it to the cash register, the girl checking me out overrode the price because it was scheduled to be marked down the next day, charging me only $38 + tax. I hesitated to write a review because I don't want more people discovering this jem. I can't wait to go back! read more

I looked up this place before my trip to Austin and once there I made no less than 3 trips over the course of a week to check for new inventory. I travel a lot for work and love hitting up local consignment shops for items you can't get elsewhere...but I'm also a bit of a snob and can't stand those shops that pack the racks with worn-out GAP tees. You can imagine my delight when I stepped into MOSS to find a beautifully merchandised, clean boutique with REAL designers represented: Chloe, Channel, DVF, Vince, Burberry, Valentino, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, etc. The quality was incredible - as if most things had never been worn. And the prices were fantastic! I walked out with a Vintage Valentino dress and three blouses from designers Alice & Olivia, Barney's and Sanctuary....all for under $400!! On top of the great selection (I honestly went into the dressing room with 15 items!) the staff on hand was super sweet and helpful. They jumped up and down with me when the Valentino fit perfectly! Moss is a great store that is my staple go-to place for any high end event or night on the town. They always have something beautiful in a variety of colors, designers, eras, and price. The women who run Moss have always been very knowledgable about every piece in their shop and always help me piece together a great outfit. I have referred women of all ages here in the last year and most people I talk to after they've visited Moss can't believe they hadn't heard of it sooner. Dries Van Noten, Missoni, Nicole Miller, Pucci, Chanel all at affordable prices and great condition? I didn't think such a store could exist but now I can't imagine shopping in Austin without a Moss. I'm a big vintage fan so maybe that's the culprit but there is an equal variety of modern mixed in the racks. Consignment: I have sold 2-3 new pieces (with tags) with Moss over the last year and it was a positive experience. I'm not sure it's "fun" to sell new clothing with the tags and receive less than 1/2 of that price, but selling with Moss was far better than selling with Buffalo Exchange. That store is ruthless with buying, they give you nothing and sell for quite a bit higher because of their corporate ownership.If I couldn't sell it on Ebay new I'd head over to Moss happily to consign some items. Austin certainly needed this store years ago, but it's better late than never.Their collection of Louboutin shoes is worth visiting alone. read more

Great selections! These ladies know how to buy. There isn't a lot of merchandise in the large space but that's exactly why I like it. The racks are spread out, the items spaced comfortably so that they catch your eye and everything is thoughtfully displayed by color to draw your attention. Slip in there some afternoon and you will find yourself admiring quality pieces, trying things on and perhaps indulging in some fashion question marks (can I wear Chloe? Temperly? Is Dosa my thing?). It's a well designed space with a gorgeous front window. Moss shares half of a renovated car repair shop on Lamar with Howl, an eclectic home furnishings store. The high ceilings and open floor plan gives Moss a bright loft show room in Soho experience. The different girls at the counter are always pleasant and attentive but still give you space to ponder and play. A small but well chosen jewelry case at the counter, a shoe/boot wall and the occasional purse, clutch or bag displayed around the room offer everything you need to outfit yourself for a special meeting, date or event. PLUS, they are a consignment shop. Drop a well selected collection of your "over it"s off and they'll pick the items they want and you may get trade or straight cash. read more

Stopped into Moss twice, and the staff there was sooooo snooty! I read another reviewer who said she felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, and I can definitely see why! (Funny, I have actually shopped at that store on Rodeo Drive and they're not snooty at all), I've also shopped in NYC, London, Paris, Milan, and Rome, and on a first-name basis with the manager at Christian Loubouton in Costa Mesa. So, I find it funny (and ironic) that the staff at Moss think of themselves at such a higher level than any place I've experienced before. I don't get dolled up when I'm out running errands, so maybe that's why they just couldn't be bothered. And, they barely have any selection of sizes 0 or 2 anyway, unless I wanted to purchase the 10-year-old overpriced Theory dress they were selling for $145. Consignment Store engaging in unethical selling practices!!!!!!!!!!! About two months ago I gave two of my David Meister gowns to Moss to consign. The first week or two the dresses were out on the floor for sale. After that, every weekend I went to Moss I noticed neither dress was in the store. When I asked where my dresses were the salesperson told me they were out on photo shoots and runway shows. FYI, this was not a term in our contract and Moss didn't request my permission or even notify me that my clothes would be used this way. Keep in mind, I paid to have my dresses drycleaned prior to giving them to Moss, only to learn they were being worn by other women for Moss's profiting scheme. I kept going back to Moss each weekend to ask about my missing items, and saw that one dress was back in the store for sale: a gunmetal David Meister gown. The other gown, a brushed gold dress, I was told, was out on layaway (not a customary option, but an exception/favor made for the staff's friend). The owner assured me that if the gown didn't sell on layaway it would be returned to the sales floor under the original price. I went back yesterday to see that the gunmetal dress was now missing and the brushed gold (the supposed layaway piece) was out on the sales floor, marked down despite the owner's assurances that it would be returned to the original price. I took back the brushed gold gown, and demanded to know where the gunmetal dress was. The salesperson tried to convince me it was in the store, somewhere in the back stock, but after I insisted further I learned that it was sold to a friend at a discounted price about a week earlier. My two dresses were never even given the opportunity to sell in the store at the original price for the first 30 days as my contract provides. Instead, my dresses were taken out of the store on promotional shows to boost the stores profit at my expense. These dresses were obviously worn by models (and who knows who else) and I was not reimbursed for dry cleaning costs, despite my request. I am terribly disappointed at the lack of integrity and ethics. Further, I am shocked at the selling practices of this store. I strongly urge any consignors to keep track of their items at this store and to demand full disclosure as to the treatment and use of their expensive, fine apparel. read more

**Update - The Store's manager, Masha, has been nothing but kind in trying to fix the situation and is aware there is issues. Her genuine responses were really impressive and I greatly appreciate the fact that there were no excuses made. Thanks Masha! A lot of this is really gorgeous stuff. Last time I was in the store though, I received the rudest, worst service I've ever experienced. I worked high end retail for years and I guarantee it's pretty standard procedure to at least greet a shopper. Lovely items but the environment is hostile and uncomfortable and no Vera Wang skirt is worth the rude looks or the attitude in there. I put down items I intended to purchase and find the idea of going back less than appealing. If you're under 40, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't acknowledge your presence at all, no matter what you're wearing. I work for a local media property here in town and my job is to support local businesses but I will not be returning to Moss. I can't help but suggesting other fashion lovers to take their business elsewhere too. read more

Beautiful store with lots of designer goodies from clothing to bags to shoes. Of course the selection will vary but when I visited recently, they had everything from Chanel to Givenchy to Acne. Prices were very reasonable and the sales people were friendly. The store itself is decorated very modern and clean. Definitely one of the nicest consignment stores I've been to. read more
