The Feathers Boutique has some very interesting vintage pieces with a very colorful palate. Really enjoyed the textures, colors and variety of items. The items were reasonably priced. Way above my tax bracket to by quite honest. most clothing items i looked at were between $200-$800but the store itself is cutesy, me and my friend wandered inside for fun just to check it out. we left empty handed because aint no way im spending my paycheck on a regular sweater. however, the store workers were very kind and inviting. read more

The clothing was right from my cuildhood. It is a quaint & upscale clothing store. Real concert t-shirts, soft and beautiful cotton. Oscar de Larenta dress, Cher style leather jackets snd jeans. Beautiful real & costime jewelry. The costume jewelry then was of such great quality, hands diwn better than what is made now. Sterling silver, gold, turqoise (real) not crunched up treated junk. SO bummed to have to post this review. I LOVE vintage and this store is fabulous, but I am beyond disappointed in my last purchase from this shop. I paid $40 for an Italian acetate hair clip that the sales woman told me was amazing and of really great quality. I'm not one to spend $40 on a clip but would invest in something thats made to last (why I love vintage) I used the clip for about two weeks and it broke. I went back into the shop and explained the situation and asked if they could exchange for another clip so I could try it again. The person working at the counter was not open at all to entertaining this idea and shut it down immediately stating that "they don't know what happens when you leave the store" To be totally honest I was super surprised that they wouldn't entertain the idea because they seem like a very well run business but in my mind this makes me never want to shop there again and I would caution other customers to shop there. read more

Everyone I know has had an issue with this boutique at one point or another. I never had until recently. I bought a pair of overpriced vintage jeans that were mislabeled the wrong style - 517 instead of the 509 that they actually were. They fit a little different than all my other 517's but figured I was hot and sticky so it was fine because all 517s fit the same right? Since it's 100 degrees in Austin TX I threw them in my closet and threw away the receipt because, why not? All sales final and they were 517s, right? I returned home from a work trip to some unseasonably cool weather and went to wear my new jeans - but they still fit odd. So I looked at the inside tag, the one that faded and would have had to have been looked at by whatever employee at Feathers who tagged them. 509. That's why they fit a little off. Since everyone that pays a premium at a vintage store shouldn't have to worry that the item was vetted and labeled correctly - I figured NBD, they'll understand because they labeled it wrong and I shop there a lot and I live in the hood, right? Wrong. All sales final is all they kept repeating, even admitting they made an error and carelessly labeled it wrong, and even after talking to the owner on the phone, just like a robot "all sales final". I could see if they were missing the tag, or worn in any way, but the only thing I didn't have was the receipt which is a moot point when the style on the tag doesn't match the style on the inside tag behind the pocket. That being said: double check every tag on all the denim there. I'm sure more than mine are mislabeled and this whole post might seem trivial to most but if you appreciate vintage denim you know style numbers are really important and if I wanted to have to be the one to decipher what all the faded tags read, I'd go dig for the denim myself in the salvage houses. There's a lot to be said about a retail store that blatantly admits fault and won't correct it - and if your business is struggling so much that you can't do a $118 chargeback and re-sell the item when it's the STORE'S ERROR, then your business is failing. This isn't about the money, it's more about principle and realizing there's always an exception to a rule, especially in a circumstance such as this. Anyone looking for dope vintage should go to Garment, Laced with Romance or even next door to Prototype. Feathers is played out and obviously struggling with the rising rents on Congress Avenue. read more

Of course, Feathers carries mostly '70s and '80s vintage clothing, from dresses to elastic belts to pewter belt buckles to owl jewelry (!) to sparkly, acrylic sweaters - and TONS of shoes and tall boots. I have honestly never seen so many cool vintage boots in one place, except a few boutiques in New York. I bought a very cute navy and yellow, Indonesian batik (I don't know if it's real or manufactured), sleevless dress. It skims by body oh-so-flatteringly and it was only $30. Actually, that's $5 more than I'd be willing to pay but I'm sure the rent in SoCo is fantastically horrific. read more

Oldie but a goodie. Feathers was one of the first places that I visited when I got to Austin. It was my first day as a transfer student at UT so, unsurprisingly, I hadn't made any friends yet. Instead of staying in my dorm room and passing time, I decided to hop on a cap metro bus and just see where it would take me. My first stop was in SOCO where I came across Feathers and it was just such a cool, vintage, quiet store that had beautiful pieces of clothing/ shoes/ bags etc. and I landed my first Southwestern style bag for a pretty good price (only $50-$60). I finally came back to visit the store this past weekend after 4 long years and the store is just as hip as it was before. My friend was able to get a skirt that she loved for quite a deal and I was able to reminisce on my past experience there. I would highly recommend checking this place out and say it's a solid 10/10. My advise: come here if you are looking for a staple outfit piece. Feathers is a little on the pricey side if you are going for just casual shopping. I'd go if you want something unique to spruce up an outfit and have something specific that you are shopping for. read more

Another beautiful vintage store on South Congress. I found here a gorgeous little velvet jacket and a classic black handbag. Am very happy with my finds and would certainly come back here to shop. The store is very well organised and taken care off. Even its vintage it has a very clean new feel and all items are in amazing new condition. The sales assistants are very sweet. I used to love this store. But management is pretty petty... Simply put their clothes are subpar. And the constant promoting suffering and torture (animals) is just plain ugly. Overpriced, boring, conceited. You could buy everything in this store scattered along S. Congress for half what they wanted at Feathers. I found most of the vintage pieces to be too dated/stale and not very fresh and modern/flexible as good vintage should be. The girl up front didn't pay much attention to my friend and I as we perused all three rooms and eventually started trying things on. When we went up to pay for an item she wasn't overly friendly, either. I walked into just about everything that was on S. There are a lot of old people in north Jersey. Apparently, they were, at one point, very fashionable younger people, probably the type who hit NYC for some Donna Summer and a disco stroll now and again. The most important thing to note about these old folks: they die. Their funky, gently worn 70s clothes make their way to Goodwills and Salvation Armys in abundance, and you can find something fabulous for $10 or less throughout the tri-state area. This is how I got a plaid button down for $4 that I only recently realized is vintage Yves Saint Laurent. I've been wearing it to sleep for years. This is not the case in Austin, where, as in Indiana, many thrift store clothes have been worn to the bone, likely passed down to several people before arriving, exhausted and hoping for death, to a Goodwill near you. But sometimes Feathers has some pretty sweet items, though note that you are paying a premium for them having sorted through the aforementioned thread piles of sadness. I recently obtained a non-vintage black netting tank top littered, appropriately, with shiny black feathers ($24). The (*new!*) men's rack contained items which, while cool, are on the steep-pricing side (ex: $45 for a vintage Levi's plaid button down). The boy was not impressed. But you can accidentally run into something fabulous under $30. I'm lying: under $50. And, having come from the state everyone makes fun of but no one understands, I'd sooner part with a Jackson than a Grant for something nifty. Nifty rhymes with thrifty, and I like rhymes. I found ridiculous and beautiful things in this place, I can just spend hours and hours browsing through this shop as if this is a museum except you can really buy them and call it your own. Serious props to feathers. The bars on the door don't give it away to be the really awesome vintage clothing store that it is. As mentioned before everything is colored coded, the items look like they were hand picked. High quality, flattering, interesting cuts. ( I found out later that this is a store that works on consignment. My friend Jen gets all of her clothes from this store, and now I know why!) I bought a dress. A beautiful 50's housewife style dress with an awesome neckline and a red cinch belt. It almost fits and I bought it anyways. I paid 24 for the dress and 12 for the belt and did not feel guilty. Not one bit. Its hard to find, but you'll be glad you found it when you do. read more

Best vintage boutique in Austin. Hands down! The owner has an incredible eye for vintage. I find something there every time I stop in, and she gets new stuff in often. I'm surprised at the review of the "scowling" service person....the owner has always been really nice and helpful every time I've been in. I actually like her a lot. Don't pass this place up. And make sure to check out the jewelry counters, because there is some awesome jewelry! Also, don't miss the sale rack in the back by the fitting rooms. I was oh so happy they convinced me to go!~ They have am zing pieces with amazing price tags! --Around $50 for real fur coats-what a steal! Great jewelry, dress, scarves, etc.. I went on a vintage prowl with my little sister today. It's hard to review vintage stores since I tend to favor places where I find things I like and as I always say, with vintage it's always hit or miss. One thing I can comment on is that it really ruins the experience when the service person has a permanent scowl on her face. Maybe I'm asking too much, but I generally like talking to customer service people who like their jobs. It could be I'm nit picky, but considering that I've been to 6 vintage stores today and that attitude is the only memorable wart on my ass - maybe I'm not so nit picky, or everyone else just likes their jobs. Now on to the clothes. They were Ok. The shoes were arranged nicely so it wouldn't be that much of a scavenger hunt. That's about all I can remember. My favorite shop in Austin. Don't miss it. I always check it out when I visit. Why? Hand selected vintage clothes at reasonable prices. I love the styles and the amount of clothes the store displays at one time. Most other vintage clothing shops cram tons of racks in the space, but this boutique layout makes it much easier to appreciate their great finds. I love coming here to get inspired and I'm always so fascinated with the way the staff can elevate almost any piece just by styling it a new way or coming up with different uses for things. They are not afraid to take risks or try something new and they are honest and up front with how they operate and make a visible effort to accommodate everyone with multiple price points and fits for different style profiles. They have innocent, glam, lascivious, tough, minimalist, classic you name it but it all feels very true to the aesthetic and chosen for a reason. The price point is fair for the level of curation, location and rarity of some of the pieces they can find and you can trust them to pick pieces that excite even the most casual vintage enthusiast. They also have home goods that are unique and cool but so fairly priced! This store celebrates local artists and creators and I really think no matter who you are you will benefit merely by perusing what they have and asking questions. They carry Jeffrey Campbell shoes. Le sigh. This fact in and of itself warrants a four star rating. Another huge point winner is that the boutique is actually organized and clean. Sometimes vintage stores are so impossible to manage because there are too many options crowded into the same space. I'm not a pro shopper and I tend to suffer from stimulus overload so keeping things simple is a major plus! Very cool pieces here. Lust-worthy I would say. There's a fabulous patchwork fur coat that if I did not live in Texas where it only gets cold enough once a year to wear it and I wouldn't feel incredibly guilty the entire time I wore it; I would buy in an instant. I would probably never take it off, buy some obnoxiously loud and dangly earrings, sit on my tush and make being generally glamorous my profession. Luckily, I was rational and bought a nice pair of functional flat black boots. (Pats self on back) Needless to say, this is a great splurge store. My first purposeful vintage shopping outing... Feathers was the highlight of the 4 or 5 stores we explored. Beautiful clothes (all different decades), fabulous boots (mostly tiny sizes--WHY don't I have size 6 or 6.5 feet!?). Although a lot of the GORGEOUS pieces were high dollar--there were definitely still items priced in the affordable range as well. You can tell that the owner/buyer really cares about the merchandise she gets in. They even had a stunning dress made by Marilyn Monroe's dressmaker...niiice Staff were not so friendly. They had their moments of kindness and were great w/ helping get a fitting room. At one point I took a dress up to the front w/ a broken zipper and was blamed for breaking it. hmm. or not? I told them that that was how I found it, was then given a snide remark on how they never carry broken or malfunctioning items and was I SURE I didn't break it. I don't know why I'm just now discovering this gem & I'm a little embarrassed I've lived in Austin for 2 years & just learned about this spot a couple days go. It's adorable, cool, chic and the store is well laid out. Tucked on a side street off S Congress this shop carries a wide variety of vintage pieces. The two gals working the front were super helpful. I was on a mission to find a friend a specific dress & they jumped to help me the moment I asked. I only had 30 min to look around & I wish I had a whole afternoon to swoon over all the beautiful clothes, boots and accessories. SO many beautiful clothes. They do offer a sales rack & you can rent items- they charge 30% of the retail price for a 72 hour rental. You can't rent sale items but looking at the price tags if you find something on sale it's worth buying. The selection was very minimal, vintage was all in great preloved condition. Loved their antique dresses! Price point was higher than usual but clothing was well preserved. Was a little offended with the staff who would not allow me to try on one of their "really expensive" "rare" pieces because they didn't want me to "rip" it... they then asked me what my measurements were and once I told them they basically said I wouldn't fit into their precious dress. I do understand, these are one of a kind pieces. I had I my wished they would have spoken in a way that didn't make me feel self conscious about my body. Very unprofessional in my opinion. They also keep reminded me not to tear the dresses I was trying on, as if I didn't understand the concept of putting one on. Will not be going back based on customer service alone. Would have thought Austin would be more mindful of triggering words like "your too big for this dress". Some people have body disorders, you never know who's day you may be ruining. read more

I try to stay away from this place as much as possible and it's not because of the incense wafting in from Mi Casa next door. I have to practice entirely way too much self-restraint in Feathers. Their vintage offerings are the cream of the crop, they rise to the top, I never eat a pig because a pig is a....you get the drift. And the place is organized. I was very excited about this boutique, bought a $140 pair of jeans after the sales person convinced me they looked so great, and also a $200 bolo necklace. The next morning I decided I didn't want or need the jeans so went back to the store to return them! The sales person never verbally mentioned all sales were final and there was only a small sign on the wall that i didn't notice, when I went to return the jeans to the same sales person who sold me the jeans, she was SUPER rude and wouldn't even let me exchange for store credit! NOT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE, first I had a 5 star review posted but after that experience I hope this post warns other people before they purchase anything from that store. read more

Pricey, but fabulous... and the whole store always smells like cinnamon! If you ordinarily don't like the idea of used clothing, this may be the place for you to begin your exploration of Austin vintage and thrift. I absolutely love to come here and look. Would give it higher ratings if it weren't for the high prices and the staff, which tends to be slightly less friendly than the average Austinite. However, this is THE spot in town for vintage designer. They don't stock huge variety in terms of sizes, but everything in this boutique is usually chic, adorable, and oh-so-much fun. I like to come here and comb the racks for the rare bargain (i dare to dream) or to splurge on an accessory that will make my thrift store finds really shine. Definitely check out the belt collection--it's always fantastic and usually a little more reasonably priced. The jewelry rocks too.
