I discovered Garment Modern + Vintage years ago. In fact, I supplied some pieces to Garment in exchange for a store credit. I have had that store credit since 2023. Garment is a sought-after designer vintage shop in Austin. Located on South Lamar, the shop offers a carefully curated collection of high quality women's vintage pieces. The selection embodies fashion forward vintage including well preserved and visually appealing garments. Garment has a boutique rather than a thrift shop persona. I like that clothing was loosely hung on the racks for ease of perusing the items. Bailey, the sales representative, was super patient and kind. She happily showed me anything I wished to see in the store particularly those pieces that were under lock and key. She also offered to reach out to a jewelry designer for different ring sizes...so kind of her. Garment Modern + Vintage is a great destination vintage aficionados and fashion enthusiasts. Found one item! Bailey put it in a beautiful box and bag...very nice touch! While I used a little of my credit today, I still have more to spend. read more

This is such a cool store! I actually went in search of unique jewlery and I know this store had a collection worth checking out. The clothes are fabulous and I ended up buying a single diamond hoop style earring as a gift for my mom, and also one of their deliciously smelling perfume roll ons. The ladies were so welcoming and really helpful in helping me choose the gift! I was visiting from Chicago and ended up going in twice because the first time I was too rushed and felt like I needed to go back and look some more! read more

I do not recommend this vintage store for two reasons. Number one, several months ago I bought several pricey pieces of clothing here (my bad for frivolously over-paying). One piece was a very "casual" "not dressy" (by any stretch of the imagination) sweater. It was nothing off the charts but nicely comfortable. I did not bring it out to wear until several weeks later after the purchase and found a well hidden hole at the bottom of the sweater about 3-4 inches wide. Since it was just past the return date when I decided to wear it and noticed the hole, I was out of luck and stuck with the damaged sweater. I really like supporting locally owned vintage stores, but when you pay a high price, you should get some satisfaction if there is a bad defect. If not a return then how about being considerate with an exchange???? This small Austin business needs to practice the Austin way of being thoughtful of the people who want to support them. I let the situation go and decided not to hold a grudge. Until... Number two, recently, I noticed they buy vintage clothing as well as sell. A few days ago my husband and I took some "excellent" condition vintage clothes in to have the woman who was working at the time ( I don't know what her position was ) look them over. Several of the pieces were bought for me as a gift, purchased from a very "excellent" seller in Budapest with a famous last name with a high consciousness about what pieces he sells and because I let my hair go to my natural color of silver I never got a chance to wear these beautiful "dressy" pieces as they clashed with my hair color. Truly my loss and someone else's gain. The woman went thru the pieces and said they were "not dressy" enough for their shop. You've got to be kidding me!!!! I. Bought. An. "Extremely". "Casual". Sweater. from them as noted above. These pieces had no holes, no stains, no loose buttons, dry cleaned and most pieces were "dressy" in excellent condition. Talk about add insult to injury, my pieces I brought in were nicer than the pricey sweater with a hole in it and yet they were not good enough ( not even one piece!??! ) for this "exclusive" little shop? This shop lost a future loyal customer and a husband who loves to over-spend money on his wife to keep her happy. Hands down, my favorite place to shop in Austin. I'm obsessed with vintage & designer pieces and feel like I'm in a museum each time I walk in. Beautifully curated shop. Sad this city has no other shops similar to it. As a collector myself, it's amazing to see what new high-quality pieces they have each time I come in (which is almost weekly!!!) The staff is sweet & professional, I never feel like a burden when I come in to try 10+ things on. Extremely reasonable prices for wonderful items. Aside from the shop itself, I love Garment's creative direction & the way they interact with buyers on social media. Definitely ahead of many of the shops in this city. Great feed that's consistently being updated-and you can easily buy straight from their Instagram account or website. A true gem! read more

I have to give a shout out to Garment! I needed a dress for an event at the Blanton and started off my search at Moss. One of the ladies there pointed me to Garment as a solution for my not finding anything there and I am so glad she did! I was immediately greeted by who I assume is the owner and another woman. I explained that I had a formal event but wanted something a little funky. That's where the fun started!! They immediately started pulling things off the rack and brainstorming with me. One dress was a clear winner. I threw out my budget (under 130 plz!) and wouldn't you know it slid right in at $125. Not bad for incredibly high quality and curated vintage. Definitely a winner in the Austin fashion scene! read more

OMG DYING. I went in today just to browse, and ended up staying for 25 minutes looking at everything. Merchandise: Fashion nerds will love Garment. It's about an 85/15 mix of vintage and new, with some really show stopping vintage finds. These are definitely not clothes you'd find while thrifting. Some of my favorites: A 'surrealist 50s bralette' with silk (satin?) hand appliques over mesh cups, An eggplant 1920s gown with art deco beading, and several silk kimonos, in prints so perfect they made me want to cry. Every piece features amazing details-- there's a lot of beading, embroidery, hand-dying, and architectural structure going on. (Anyone with an interest in garment construction or history will have a field day here.) The best part is that this store completely skips anything too costumey, so, with the exception of some very cool but avante-garde pieces I couldn't pull off, I wanted to wear EVERYTHING. I really can't stress enough how spot on the curation is. Prices: Pretty much market price for what you're getting. I shop vintage online frequently, and I can tell you that you'll probably pay less here than on ebay for the same thing. (Garment does end up being higher than most vintage stores in Austin, but like... you'll understand when you see it.) The cheapest tops started around 30-50, and there were plenty of separates under 100. This place broke my heart. I've spent lots of money here. My last trip in, I handed a gorgeous dress over the counter to the sales person, told her I would probably buy but needed more time to think about it. We talked about over the phone payment, etc. I called back in an hour and a half to buy the dress, but they had sold it. The store manager neglected to tell me they never hold things and if they do it's only for...an hour and a half. She apologized--but I really don't know what to think. Did she sell it to a friend...or...what? I love the fine curation of vintage, love the fact that it's woman owned...but feel I am not at all valued as a customer here. read more

Garment is the sister store to MOSS Designer Consignment, one of my favorite places to shop in town. Garment has a mix of highly curated vintage and new, independent designers. One the vintage side, I've scored things like a fringed jacket, 20s beaded sweater, and 80s Armani floor length velvet striped number. From the modern portion of the store, my Unearthen crystal pyramid necklace is one of my favorites as is my Finnell wallet. Both are urban with a bit of an edge. When I'm looking for new staples for my closet that are unique but also versatile, Garment is where I go. read more
