We shared the Arroz Con Pitu De Caleya platter which was a good amount of food and absolutely delicious. Crispy skin on the chicken and the rice is cooked in a cider. Just all around really flavorful dish. The Fried Artichokes were delicious especially with some of the charred lemon squeezed on top. And we also had the chorizo and some Nice warm crispy bread with olive oil. We shared a pitcher of the sangria as well. Topped it all off with some delicious churros and chocolate. My wife and I were in town visiting our daughter. I travel for work and our family likes to travel for vacations. I am a bit of a foodie, so I am kind of picky. We had a spectacular dinner last night. Everything was perfect. Our server was just fantastic, she made great wine recommendations and provided perfect menu recommendations. We ordered a mix of starters and small plates. We ordered everything at once and asked her to space out the delivery of the food. As good as the service was, the food was even better. The two standouts were the scallop crudo and the oxtail. I general do not like scallops, but these were amazing. Our daughter does not like sushi, but she tried this and immediately took a second piece. The waitress recommended that oxtail, and I am so happy she did. Okay, 4.4 stars is underrated. Walked in without reservation, required about an hour for a seat due to space. Went down the street for drinks and worth the wait. Had the charcuterie board, which was nicely assembled with a variety of meats and something like peppercorn peppers as a pallet cleanser. Then the gem salad which was a wonderful bright addition to meats, followed by the oxtail. The oxtail, was, magnificent. Beautifully tender, nicely seasoned with a light cheese that appeared torched on top of a light baguette or similar bread. Lastly the pork ribs. Tasted as though they had been marinaded in a vinegar of sorts and slow cooked in a tangy sauce, complemented by a honey, za'tar type side. Incredible. I never say yes to dessert, but couldn't resist after an incredible meal and excellent recommendations from our server (Rachel! She was fantastic), so we splurged on some in house rhubarb sorbet. I visited Morcilla with two family members and was super excited to try it given the rave reviews. My reservation was for 4:45pm but, after checking Google and Morcilla's website earlier that day, I saw the restaurant didn't open until 5pm so that's exactly when we arrived. The hostess told me I was late, so I proceeded to tell her I thought they opened at 5pm. She then told me they opened at 4pm because of "holiday hours," which were nowhere to be found on the restaurant's website. This really out a bad taste in my mouth from the get go but I did my best to not let her sour our experience. Our waitress, on the other hand, was much warmer and recommended a couple of very good dishes. For dinner we ordered bacalao rebozado (cod cheeks, 2 per order), oxtail montadito (DON'T miss this "snack," 3 per order), radicchio and citrus salad (delicious, as recommended by our waitress), costillas de la matanza (tender spare ribs, 4 per order), and arroz con pitu (half a chicken over a light bed of rice; the closest you'll get to paella at this restaurant). Overall, I loved the caramelized onion taste and tenderness of the oxtail, the citrusy flavor of the salad, and the roasted chicken in the large plate. Overall, the food was very good but I wish they had more traditional Spanish tapas--think patatas bravas, Spanish tortilla, gambas al ajillo, etc. I love some modern tapas but the time-standing ones would be a great addition to the menu. The ambiance is intimate. There's a small number of tables and about 8 seats at the bar. It's a good place for a date night. Morcilla is one of the places I love bringing friends who are visiting Pittsburgh. I've felt that it is a fine dining restaurant that offers an original menu, of which I felt is food that they can't miss while they are here. There are not many tapa restaurants in the city, and Morcilla is by far a favorite. Their scallops crudo and beef tartare is my favorite variation of the dish, among all the restaurants in Pittsburgh that make it. Their scallops were fresh and a fair portion as it was thickly sliced (been noticing other restaurants slicing their scallops way too thin). Flavors are refreshing and has changed over the years. I loved when it was offered with strawberries. You can't really go wrong with any of their small plates. Their drinks are also great, especially the sangria, though it is on the strong side. Service was a bit slow but they are always fully booked. Be sure to make a reservation well ahead of time. There's walk in bar seating but the wait is pretty long during peak dinner hours. read more

Firstly, our service was fantastic. Our waitress was super chill and answered all of our questions and gave great recommendations. she also gave us churros on the house because it was our anniversary . The food was all good but a few items were worth going back for: - the (sadly, unpictured) oxtail was so incredibly tender and delicious and served piping hot. - the duck confit!!! So good! Sweet and savory. - I absolutely loved the goat cheese flan! I liked that even though we got multiple dishes that were served with chips, the chips that came with each were flavored differently, a nice touch! It's pretty difficult to get a weekend reservation at Morcilla, and the quality of the tapas is definitely why! Going as a group is the best way to experience Morcilla so that you can try as many things on the menu as possible. The snacks are the smallest size portions, but I also think they were my favorite dishes that we ordered! We tried the warm bread, chorizo, fried artichokes, boquerones, mussels en escabche, gambas en escabeche, & oxtail montadito. Each plate was packed with flavor; my favorites were the gambas & the oxtail. For the larger size entrees, we got the tomato & radicchio salad, roasted honeynut squash, & costillas de la matanza (baby back ribs). The ribs were a group favorite! We also shared a pitcher of their white sangria which is nice & refreshing. Fantastic dinner at this Spanish restaurant. While they have small plates, it's not exactly a traditional tapas restaurant although there are some dishes common to both. Definitely get some jamon. You will see when you walk in (but look up). The beef tartare was also excellent, as it was well-prepared and melts in your mouth. Bacalao Rebozado provided a nice bite of fried food, while the boquerones were very tasty and not fishy at all. Ordered: Goat Rodeo Dairy Cheese 8/10 Chorizo 7/10 Oxtail Montadito 10/10 Beef Tartare 8/10 Roasted Cabbage 5/10 Costillas de la Matanza 10/10 I still can't get over the oxtail and the ribs. Both were so well cooked and seasoned. The ribs were so unique in flavor and perfectly spicy with the harissa. The oxtail was melt on your mouth tender. I think these are both must try dishes. The goat cheese board was a nice small bite with some punchy tang, and the beef tartare was a little heavy on horseradish taste (which is good for us). The only minor gripe, which is strictly personal preference, the cabbage came off too sweet due to the sauce. It's always such a good dinner when we come to Morcilla. This place is definitely on my top 3 favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. The wine options are great and the sangria is wonderful. I love that they change their menu from time to time and am excited to see new additions. If the pork ribs are on the menu, these are a must order!! The pulpo a la plancha is my favorite octopus dish in the city (and I've tried a lot of different octopus dishes in the city haha). Whatever spices they use in their sauces are incredible- always so bold and unique. I would definitely recommend a reservation if you can get one. If not, they have a waitlist too. A great small plates spot! I came here with 3 other friends at around 9 PM, and the place was quite full. The waitress was very friendly and offered suggestions on how much food to order and what to order. My friend had been here before, so he also provided some input on what seemed to be the more popular dishes. I was worried, given the nature of small plates, that there would not be enough food, but it turned out to be perfectly enough for the 4 of us. The standout dishes were the oxtail, the duck confit, the beef tartare, and the setas a la plancha. Being able to try out different flavors and styles of food was a very enjoyable experience. The classier atmosphere provided a more elevated experience, which I enjoyed. This seems like a great place to either have a date night or have a nice night out with friends. Beautiful restaurant--truly a hidden gem. The wine list is excellent, and the Spanish cuisine was outstanding. The goat cheese plate, cabbage dish, and tomato salad were exceptional. Lyn at the bar provided fantastic service, very knowledgeable and helpful with great customer care. One suggestion: when we called ahead, we were told the bar was first-come, first-served, but upon arrival, we were informed that it was reserved for reservations. When we asked if we could have a drink while waiting, we were told, "No, there's not enough room. Try the cocktail bar down the street." This wasn't the best customer service, especially since, once seated, we saw guests standing behind us ordering drinks. Short rib-5/5 outstanding, the short ribs were short ribbing. All of the things you want out of short ribs-it possessed those things. Didn't like: Sunchokes-my husband hated them. 0/5. They were new to me and the server raved about them so my expectations were a bit higher and they did not make the mark. Consistency was weird, taste was fine but bland and I just don't really understand-as a carnivore-why other carnivores would choose this dish when there are so many other outstanding dishes on this menu. Now, as a vegan, this is potentially a different story. Churros-now, I've had a lot of churros in my day and these tasted like they were made with care, like the ingredients were quality etc but the flavor was just not there. I thought if I doused the churro in the hazelnut fondue it would help, it did not. That fondue was not great either, its flavors were muted which didn't really make sense because its chocolate & hazelnut, I was expecting a Nutella-ish taste and it was barely sweet, kind of bitter actually. We made reservations months in advance. Hubs was hyping it up, so we went. We got checked in and was seated immediately. It's a darker setting and a more intimate and warm vibe in the sense of you and everyone else in the setting. We ordered drinks and we're impressed by the gin options. Our waiter was very helpful with the drinks, helping to define what cocktail would be best for a particular floral gin of interest. Food wise, we did a bunch of small plates. Expect impeccable service, great ambiance and ridiculously tasty food. Everything was so, SO amazing, but if I HAD to limit my recommendations to a few dishes, I'd say the octopus, squash and ribs.  My god the ribs were crazy (melt-in-your mouth tender with seasoning on point), and the pulpo was so damn tender.  I swear I could've bathed in that potato puree it was so scrumptious.  The food was the epitome of comfort, and it's something I absolutely crave on the regular.  I'm already looking forward to my next meal there. This is as close to a Michelin-star restaurant as you can get in Pittsburgh. The taste, presentation, service, everything was 5-star. Very small place so getting a reservation is a must! Cute vibe with an open kitchen. The waiter recommended 6 plates for 2 people to share, I would even go to say we would order 8 with no intention of dessert afterwards and that would be satisfactory. Everything we had was packed with flavor, I don't have a bad thing to say. Gambas En Escabeche and Hamachi Crudo were both packed with flavor! The fried cauliflower will turn any meat-eater into a vegetarian. Pulpo a la plancha will make you an octopus fan. It wasn't breaded but had this crispy potatoes that gave you the texture variety you needed. Costillas de la Mantanza was to die for. Fall of the bone cook, perfectly seasoned, fantastic sauce. We also got the Smoked Merguez Montadito which was my husband's favorite. The sausage was very flavorful. Cocktails were also very good and strong, as they should be. Morcilla is one of my top fav restaurants in Pittsburgh! The food is unique and I have never had a bad dish there. I was so excited when they reopened that I made a reservation as soon as I could. People are surprised that I love Morcilla since I am a pescatarian. They actually have amazing seafood dishes! My boyfriend started off with the chorizo that had vanilla bean and dates on top. It smelled amazing, and he loved it. We looked at the menu online before going and saw that you could get small or large portions of the big plates. When he asked at the restaurant if he could get a smaller portion of the chicken, the waitress said no. He got the large chicken dish and took most of it home for leftovers. I started with the scallop crudo (my fav scallop dish EVER). If you've never had raw scallops before and are nervous to try....this is the place to try them! They melt in your mouth and are like butter. AMAZING. I paired that with a sparkling rosé. We shared the little gem salad. It is so fresh and the fresh herbs makes it taste like Springtime! On to the octopus dish! Grilled octopus over potato puree was the perfect combination of different textures. I paired that with the tempranillo. It was very filling for a small plate. I've never been so conflicted when trying a food if I like it or not than when I dined at Morcilla So the atmosphere is great and the staff were very welcoming. We were excited to finally try as people who have traveled a little bit in Spain and loved the food there (and I guess as general food snobs) We tried a lot of the small plates and snacks. I would say the oxtail is not to be missed, and was the best thing we ate. I would say the fried artichokes and salty pork bits charcuterie too were amazing The croquetas, a favorite of mine from Spanish tapas places, were super disappointing. I would honestly say most of the food was okay but had something that wasn't great about it. The confit was tender but didn't pair well with the sauce. The foie blande had so many different flavors that I wouldn't say it was complex, it was just tastebud-confusing. I loved the sauce that the scallop crudo was in, but the texture was super off. The basque cheesecake itself was good, but the sauce overpowered rather than enriched the flavor. The churros were fine, because they were churros I would honestly say it's not worth the price. I am willing to pay premium prices for premium foods, but I don't think Morcilla cuts it.
