Found myself working in Sewickley on their Night Mart event. How lovely! After strolling through the vendors, I decided to try Torogoz for a bite and glass of wine. The restaurant is cozy and has a small variety of Latin American cuisine, with focus on Peruvian. Wine was not available that evening for some reason, so I went to a street vendor and purchased a 1/2 of an open bottle, and headed back to Torogoz. I decided to order the Lomo Saltado, which I hadn't had in Pittsburgh. The dish had tender well seasoned filet mignon plus skinny fries and couscous. It's a reflection of Chinese influence on Peruvian culinary . I really enjoyed it. Chef Julio stopped by to say which was lovely. We chatted a little bit about moving from California to Pittsburgh. Nice to hear that he settled in nicely with his family and is happy to call Pittsburgh home. Jenny, his wife, was also helping that evening. It was a pleasure speaking with them. I was surprised to receive a corkage fee of $15 without proper communication. I only brought an already uncorked half a bottle due to the BYOB circumstances, but they did remove it when I questioned it. The food was PHENOMENAL however they need to stack their reservations. It took over 30 minutes to get service and I think it's because half the restaurant had the same reservation time. Standouts were the steak, obviously ceviche, and even the churros. read more

We had wanted to try it since we first heard about it and thought Valentine's weekend was the perfect time for a nice meal. It's also amazing there's finally an amazing Pan Latin restaurant in Pittsburgh where you can try dishes from all over Latin America from a well traveled chef from El Salvador. Since we saw they had churros, we opted to skip the appetizers (even though they sounded really good) and have cocktails, entrees and churros. We were so glad that we did. I enjoyed my pisco sour from Peru. We loved my husband's raspberry mojito (Besito de mora). My skirt steak with homemade chimchurri was like butter. So tender and delicious! It made me happy reminiscing about my time in Argentina when I studied abroad there. My husband enjoyed his lomo saltado (filet mignon with stewed tomatoes, rice and delicious fries). The churros were so crunchy and cinnamony with dulce de leche (caramel) inside. The food was phenomenal and so was the service. We'll definitely be back to try other entrees, the appetizers and ceviche. read more

Torogoz is an upscale restaurant and bar that serves Central and South American foods and beverages. I had wondered what the name Torogoz means, so I did a Google search, and it revealed that Torogoz is the national bird of El Salvador. Furthermore, in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette newspaper, I read that the owner/chef Julio Peraza was born in El Salvador, raised in California, and worked in restaurants in Ecuador and Colombia. My husband and I ate one dinner at Torogoz. I had made a reservation through a Toast link on their website. We did not immediately see the restaurant from the street, because it is in the back of a courtyard in a small piazza. Our seating host and server worked efficiently and spoke courteously. My husband and I were wearing jeans and nice shirts (a polo shirt and a blouse), which appeared to fit in with the other customers' outfits. My husband commented that the restaurant had only one unisex bathroom stall. During our visit, the menu listed starters such as ceviches, main courses such as pescado zarandeado (fish) and lomo saltado (filet mignon), sides such as rice and mushrooms, a couple desserts, wines, cocktails, beers, and non-alcoholic beverages. Here are my ratings for what we ate: Jamaica's Finest Ginger Beer - 4.5 stars - This non-alcoholic beverage had a pleasant flavor of ginger. My husband said, "I like it." Torogoz Ceviche - 4 stars - We ate this ceviche as a starter. The ingredients of catch-of-the-day fish, red onion, corn, peppers, and cilantro were very fresh. The lime marinade caused this ceviche to taste more sour than ceviches that I have eaten at other restaurants, but the sourness was partially balanced by sweet potatoes. My husband described it as "refreshing." Peruvian Half Rotisserie Chicken - 4.5 stars - This chicken had juicy meat and a slightly seasoned skin. I appreciated that it was served with many vegetables, an important and often overlooked food group, including a salad and calabacitas zucchini. Skirt Steak - 4.5 stars - This skirt steak was cooked medium-rare as my husband had requested, and it was juicy. Chimichurri and guasacaca sauce added very nice flavors. The side of fries could have been a bit crispier and more seasoned. Churros - 4 stars - Four churros were filled with caramel, covered with cinnamon and sugar, and tasted sweet. Saw this place pop up on yelp and wanted to try after picking up our friend from the airport. We knew on a Friday night we would have to wait. Put our names in for 3 and ended up waiting well over an hour when they said only 20 minutes. We ordered some appetizers to start and the romaine salad was absolutely delicious, highly recommend. We did a family style and ordered three main dishes. The branzino (fish of the day) was awesome. We loved the sauces that came with it. Our waitress was great and very knowledgeable about the menu. She told us how the name is from a specific bird in Latin America and all about the restaurant. The only thing we didn't like was the extra charges. We didn't realize we would be charged $12 for asking for extra sauce and then we were talked into a dessert specialty drinks that we didn't order so when they came out we assumed they were compliments of the house for the long wait but found out we were charged for that as well as the mocktail for my pregnant wife. Would come back as this is a unique restaurant but definitely would be aware of extra charges and making sure you are on the same page. read more

We stopped in for a drink ands app. When in the area. The restaurant is very contemporary with a nice bar with dim lighting and nice area of tables. We ordered some wine. They carry wines from Refucilo winery which we like and enjoyed. Service was nice and our food came out very quickly. We share the Aguachile, which is a fun dish with some pepper flavor and a bit bitter and a slight citrus and salty taste with some radish. The shrimp was a bit tough but good. Also shared the Pastelitos de pollo which are basically Empanadas that were lacking flavor. Would like to try a main course in the future. read more

We had mahi mahi ceviche in citrus (yummy), octopus & smashed potatoes in lemon parsley citrus, chimmichurra skirt steak with frites, and pan-seared trout. There were a couple hiccups: the octopus was disappointing - overcooked & chewy, but the lemon marinade was perfection; the trout was slightly overdone. It could have used one of their citrus sauces to bring some flavor. The mushroom side was gone in a whirl - so delicious. The meal was $100+/person, food, drinks, & tip. Would we go again? First thing you notice when you open the door to this Peruvian hot spot is the atmosphere - it's date-night-energetic. Low light, deep green walls, sophisticated (but not pretentious) decor. The bright light at the front door where the kitchen/host stand is is a bit of a shocking contrast. The bar area are is quite popular for a casual dinner. It filled up by about 7pm. Ceviche is the claim to fame for Torogoz, and it's good. The citrus, spicy punch is a bit overpowering, but it's done well. The dish is pretty, but though the beautiful earthenware each person gets for this course comes out hot. Odd for a chilled dish. The plates are beautiful, though. The wine list was also a standout for us. The ops manager (really welcoming, knowledgeable) came by and explained that the Torogoz teams buys exclusively from this quaint winery on the Northside called Refucilo -- a Latino-owned biz (great combo!) whose owner imports from Mendoza. We got the Grand Reserve Cabernet. It was a 2019 and quite good. (Side note - can't wait to try this winery! The biz gets fab reviews!) We ordered the 1st ceviche to share among 3 people. The catch of the day was mahi mahi. Again- the "Leche de Tigre (that citrusy, spicy punch) overpowers. There was a pretty, vibrant orange dollop of sweet potato, but it's lost in the citrus. We all ordered the Peruvian chicken. My husband and I were *monster* fans of this crazy-good dish from our decades in DC - frequenting this wildly popular, fabulous Peruvian hole in the wall called Pollo Rico. (It's still open & now has other locs. I'd humbly suggest Torogoz folks make a trek to try their version!!). As a result, I think our expectations were too high. The "Peruvian spices" in the Torogoz chicken - beyond the skin - were so muted, you almost couldn't taste them. You receive an ample portion, and it's moist - but the spices are SO key to Peruvian chicken! No dessert for us, though if we return - we'll try those good-looking churros. The mole pork chop also sounded good. All-in-all it was a good night - the friendly service, the wine, the ambiance, the attention to detail were all very much appreciated. read more

We had a great family dinner at Torogoz. The server was exceptional and the ambiance was great. For our starter, most of us got the romaine salad. It was a hit, especially the avocado dressing. We also got a shrimp ceviche. The shrimp were flattened and tough so not the best. I had a fabulous filet entree which came with rice and papas fritas. It had one of the most fresh and flavorful sauces I've ever had. We finished our meal with Churros which were the best i've ever had. Overall great experience. read more

Absolutely the best ceviche I've had in this country. Service was excellent. Informative and attentive but not overbearing. Great cocktails, however they do use Jalapeno infused tequila in some drinks, so beware if you're not prepared. The Skirt Steak was top notch, tender and grilled perfectly, with a healthy serving of excellent fries. Avoid the Pork Mole, it was one dimensional and lacked depth. A disappointment considering else everything else was very well prepared. Absolutely will go back and explore more of the menu. Great ambience - but the two tops were very small. After a visit to Dazzling Lights at Pittsburgh Botanic Gardens (wonderful) and Grist House Command (great beverages in a cool setting) we dined at Torogoz. We had a reservation and were seated immediately upon arrival. It's small restaurant with a great vibe. There were four of us. We shared Ceviche Mixto and Pastelitos de Pollo. Both were very good and provided a great start to the meal. My wife has Cochinita Pibil, our friends had Quinoa and Pork Mole while I had the Skirt Steak . The food and atmosphere were excellent as was the service. It was our first visit to Torogoz so we had many questions. Ginny (sic?) was our server, our very patient server, who provided the answers to our many questions with a smile. All in all, it was an great evening and Torogoz is on our must return list. read more

Pros: Entrees and drinks were both unique and really tasty. Bartender (Ryan) very friendly and made great drinks while we waited (and waited and waited for table). Cons: Service. Arrived w party 4 and hostess said 40- minutes for table. Actually wait for table was over 1 hour. While we waited we stared at 3 large 4 tables that nobody was ever seated (restaurant was only half full). When finally seated nobody came to table for 10 more minutes- when they brought water and we said we were ready to order - told they were not the server but would find ours - 10 more minutes until server arrived. We were ready and put in full order and waited again for over hour before food arrived. Server provided no explanation nor did he seem to think it was unusual or a big deal. read more

Pros: I got the filet meal. I didn't grab a pic of the menu so forgive me for not remembering the name. It was a generous portion and I was so thankful. The steak was cooked perfectly medium and had such a beautiful spicy sauce. Spice level 5/10 so not overly spicy, just right. The frites were soggy but still yummy and I ate most of them. I loved the veggies in it. The rice was delicious, but would be so much better with fresh larger sliced carrots and green beans in it instead of the frozen style. But the flavor was incredible. My husband said the fish was excellent. It seems like it should be served over rice, but nevertheless was very tasty. The service was incredible and the atmosphere is modern, eclectic. The food is great, but this restaurant is new and definitely has some kinks to work out. Ahead of our reservation, I could not find a menu online, the phone number doesn't work, and there's no active website. I had some questions, and even sending an email to what is listed got me nowhere. So, there's no way to contact this place. I took photos of the menu to share. We arrived at 7 pm for our reservation for 2 people, and we were seated right away. The first thing we noticed is how LOUD it was. It's small inside, and the tables were full, but there weren't THAT many people in there. Yet, my friend and I literally had to shout to hear each other. I don't even think there was music playing. We ordered quickly, as we were told the the kitchen was backed up so we needed to get our full order in at once, and soon. We ordered one appetizer, our two entrees, and a couple drinks from the bar. The bar drinks came relatively quickly, but after that, the wait started. We didn't get our appetizer until 7:55. After that, it was another 40 minutes for the entrees. During this time, tables were clearing out and we could see them turning people away at the door, so the place was not packed by any means. We had two rounds of drinks before even seeing the appetizer. Again, the food was very delicious. I would probably give it another try once they've been open a little longer. If you go now, be ready to wait, and don't expect to be able to contact them in advance. read more

Awesome vibe - spacious, yet cozy! Our server was lovely and said the restaurant has been open about 4 months. I wish she would have proactively told us about the restaurant, chef and food knowing it was our first time; so I asked a bunch of questions! The cocktails are great - I had the rum, blackberry something or other which was gorgeous and delicious! We had the ceviche mixto - phenomenal; the empanadas - phenomenal; and the chicken "roll-up" - good but not as good as the other two apps. We then had the pork shank and the filet - both dishes were beautifully plated and delicious! Sadly they ran out of the tres leches; the churros however were divine! A little drizzle of chocolate would have totally elevated them!!! We are huge fans and members of local winery / tasting room, Refucilo, and were happy to see the reasonably priced bottles on the menu. The service was great - changing out dishes and utensils and refilling water are a must for me - and they did so! And although they said it was a 90 min reservation, they did NOT rush us. They did require ordering everything at once, but it was paced perfectly. We will definitely be back! read more

Food was good overall. Ceviche was excellent as was Steak entree. However, we felt rushed and the pace of the meal was off. Within 30 minutes of seating, we were already being served entrees despite waiter telling us he would "pace the meal". Also, several menu items items not available despite an early reservation and only told to us after we had ordered these. Place has potential but needs to up its front of the house game. read more
