I've been back here a number of times, and I'm sorry to say that the food just isn't that great. It hasn't lived up to my first experience (when I ordered a "special"). The ambiance is awesome but I think paying over $100 for two people to have a fairly bland meal isn't worth it.

Went here for my son's 21st birthday dinner after taking him & my mom to see a matinee performance of "The Book of Mormon" in San Francisco which was outstanding & brilliant satire. The restaurant was amazing! We ordered cheesy garlic bread & also the escargot. (If you want this, keep in mind it takes 15 minutes to prepare.) Drenched in butter & garlic, it was good just my mom commented the snail meat was a little small & not plump. I had the lasagna (which comes out piping hot since it takes 30 minutes to prepare & cook). The nice thing is the menu advises of this. My son had the pasta a la carbonera with pancetta which was outstanding! My mom ordered chicken picata and my daughter had penne with the butter. Also my Manhattan was on point and the Roy Rogers (Coke with grenadine) was refreshing. The bar area was packed and has a wide variety of drinks & spirits to wet your whistle. For dessert, they gave my son a complimentary slice of tiramisu. I had the key lime cheesecake with berry coulis, my daughter had the chocolate cake & my mom ordered the zabilogne with strawberries. All in all, it was a fantastic dining experience and we will be back. Thanks to Rebecca, our waitress & the owner who checked on us. Note: They do have a new chef who is making the menu his own. As we left around 9:15pm, I peeked through the front window. The kitchen was humming. The chef & his team were hard at work getting customers dishes out. Bravo!

The excellent reviews for this classic Italian restaurant drew us in, so now need to add one of my own! Expect a dimly-lit space, tables with tablecloths and candles, and walls covered with photos and framed art reminiscent of Italy. The restaurant isn't huge and tables are strategically placed to maximize the available seating. However, it's not a very open space and does get loud as it fills up, which happened very quickly at 5pm on a Saturday night. Service is excellent. We were greeted, seated, and served with warmth and efficiency. There's a lot going on in a busy restaurant like this and they handle it well. Complementary bread wasn't heated, but can't complain about anything complementary! Meanwhile, the dishes we ordered were all delectable. We shared Beef Carpaccio and Pancetta-Wrapped Prawns as appetizers, both of which I'd highly recommend. I love calamari steak and opted for the incredibly tender Seppia Dore, served with al dente rigatoni in a light, tasty tomato sauce and served alongside a medley of perfectly cooked and seasoned fresh vegetables. Yum! Other recommended dishes from my family were the Cioppino and the Chicken Piccata. Only the noise level stops me from giving Montecatini a 5-star review, along with the fact that I have (only once before) had a better calamari steak than they offered. But this is really a 4.5 and I look forward to returning!

By far the best food and service in Walnut Creek! Sure you can go to some of those bigger places but I promise you you won't get better service or better food not to mention better prices at any of them. The Chicken Parm is outrageous the staff is some of the best I've ever delt with. This is an "Old School" Italian Restaurant, that being said there is a good mix of ages in there. Go and try it you won't regret it. Make reservations!!!

Popped in for dinner over the weekend and sat at the bar. Place has such a friendly vibe. Wish I had taken photos of everything! We had the Linguini al vongole, Lasagne casalinga, Caesar salad and for dessert a delicious cake imported from Italy. To say everything was delicious is an understatement! Service was spectacular and Marco is an absolute gem! His darling personality somehow made our amazing experience even more wonderful We're already looking forward to our next visit.

Great experience at this classic restaurant. The bar was full before 6 PM - I think Happy Hour is popular here! We scored a corner table and were well taken care of. We ordered some drinks and ordered the prosciutto antipasto to share and then ordered the chicken scaloppine, the special (ling cod over angel hair), and the bonein pork cutlets Sorrento. The prosciutto antipasto was really good with a nice mix of foods. Our dishes were all amazing. This place can get noisy with a lively bar, but this is a fun place, especially for a celebration dinner.

A classic for a reason!! It was busy but the staff were so accommodating. We sat at the bar and split the shrimp scampi. Love that they split it for us! Perfectly juicy shrimp in a garlic butter sauce you want to sop up with the bread. My fav is the side pasta and veggies that come with all entrees. Just so good!

Wow! Mostly good food and service Absolute favorites: Fettuccine alla viareggina - seafood pasta in a tomato cream sauce, super tasty sauce with fresh garlic and the shrimps were perfectly crisp and bouncy. Scallops were a bit overdone but you can't expect much from a non seared scallop Tiramisu - super delicate with fresh cream, no thickness or oversweetness at all. It was like a light heavenly cloud, some of the best around Carpaccio - rare thinly slices beef, lime for acidity, balanced with the cream sauce and arugula. Perfect app The good: Strawberry zabaglione - Basically strawberries and a nice fresh cream sauce - was so light and refreshing, a good finish to the meal The OK: Ceasar salad - very basic, did not come with anchovy in the dressing and was overall pretty The meh: Vitello marsala - veal was tough unfortunately, which is not the point of that type of meat. Pasta and sauces were underwhelming Service was friendly and attentive, you can tell they were committed to excellence Atmosphere was very NYC Italian vibes Overall, I'd recommend!

Saturday dinner reservation Jam packed and ambiance was l o u d Mixed crowd from young to senior, from the casual dressed to party dresses. Traditional Italian restaurant vibe (picture Tony Soprano eating here). Service was surperb. Tried: Minestrone Toscano soup Seppia dore (calamari steak) Fettuccine alla primavera (vegetarian fettuccine) Lasagna casalinga (beef lasagna) Gnocchi bolognese Food was absolutely delicious, vegetables cooked proper, sauces and seasoning was spot on. Highly recommend if you want excellent Italian food (great variety as well).

Ask the Community - Montecatini Ristorante

I'm vegan and my husband is gluten-free. Are there a good amount of options beyond a salad? (I see this question has been answered but they are 5+ years old).

How noisy is this restaurant when full (as on a Sat evening)? Like, loud Muzak, noisy bar, etc.?

Pretty loud, not music loud - customer talking loud. And pretty tight in space too. You can hear at your table when having a conversation.

Anyone know what the "new" hours are? We've tried ordering delivery 4 times now and each time it says the restaurant is closed.

Delivery can be ordered only during our open hours of Wed-Sat 4-8 pm. Please visit http://montecatinirestaurant.com/order-online/ for details and ordering. Buon Appetito! Please join the e-club and you will get weekly new menus.… Read more

Does anyone know of their happy hour specials?

Hi. Happy Hour is from 5 to 6:30 Tues-Sat and 4:30-6:30 Sun. They have a little menu for happy hour such as: antipasto or calamari for $5 and nice selection of wines @ $5 to $15 per glass. This ristorante has amazing delicious wines.

Do they have a kids menu?

    Nope

What is the corkage fee if we wanted to bring our own bottle of wine?

    $15 corkage fee

Does Montecatini offer a gluten-free pasta?

Yes!!! Owner and the chef are very responsive to all dietary requests

I was searching rooftop bars & this came up; only, is there rooftop bar/seating?

No rooftop bar, nice inside bar and superb food and appetizers. Well worth a trip in.

We've loved Montecatini's for years, but my wife is now trying to adhere to a vegan diet. Has anyone identified any good vegan dishes there?

My son-in-law is a vegetarian and he has eaten there many times with us so I'm sure u can find something . Ask them to leave meat out of a dish that looks good to u.

I got their lavender cocktail (I forget the actual name) and would definitely get it again. The food was - wow - outstanding! Their salmon had a glorious crispy outside and the potatoes were also nice and crispy. The asparagus was nicely seasoned and the soy glaze on top was delightful. Every bite was *chefs kiss*. My husband also loved his rigatoni. The prices? They aren't cheap. This isn't an every week type of place; but I don't think they are completely out of the ballpark taking into account the quality and location. Drinks are $16-$18 and entrees are ~$25-45 range. The service was very good! Our waiter was very polite and attentive, and staff was very good at clearing our plates, filling water etc. The ambiance? I have mixed feelings on. I love the view, and the decor was nice. Buuut the music was a bit too loud. And it was club type music...Luckily we were in a spot that wasn't fully covered so the sound could escape a little more, but still, I wouldn't say it's fantastic for a romantic evening as it's hard to hear what others at your table are saying. I would say choose softer music, let people enjoy the view and not be overwhelmed by noise. I see a lot of reviews about this place being stingy when it comes to seating you if you don't buy food. Obviously, we didn't face this obstacle as we did intend to order dinner. However, the host did ask us if we were going to order food; and I wonder if we would have said 'no', then we would have been turned away? If so, that's a problem. This restaurant has more far more cocktails than entrees on its menu, so it should not come as a surprise if guests want to come in for a few drinks and nothing else. I can understand that owners don't want people hogging a table if they aren't ordering enough, but there's got to be a better way of doing that. The other common experience I see is people being denied alcohol often. I wonder if part of the reason of this is because A) You have to climb 3 flights of stairs to get there and it's a legal concern or B) Their drinks are very strong so they're trying to be extra careful. All in all, we enjoyed our time, and would come again, but would be afraid to if only desiring libations. lol

The entire collection of wine was exposed to heat and ruined but they are still selling it to unknowing customers. Many of the wines that I inspected had corks bulging out past the foil and were discolored. The Syrah I picked and thought was safe looked good but under the foil, the cork was bad and yes the wine was rancid. I wish that was just a side story but the glass of wine I purchased was also foul. It was the most expensive Napa Cab they serve. I asked a few times how long the bottle was open and he did not know but guessed maybe a night or two before. This tells me a few things; they are not keeping wine fresh or pumping out the air or using a Coravin system for example. They are not writing the date opened even. Also in my personal opinion, the wines here are the lower tier to keep pricing down and profits high. It just makes the experience low for the customer. Lastly I did have a cheese plate and it was also terrible. The staff have no knowledge of wine. So it just ends up being a happy hour place for people to drink cheap wine. I'm sorry for the former failed business and appreciate trying to take it over but the business model is not working. It's not worthy of business woman of the year unfortunately. Lesson learned: Californians know wine!
