Monkey Barrel is close to home so I've been here on several occasions. Great sandwiches and lovely bar with the Gen X theme. Don't expect a huge menu it's mainly just subs from Carbones. If you're looking for a sandwich, drinks & music this is a great hang out! And they have video games! read more

Oh how I used to really enjoy the Barrel when it was in its old home on the Platte. The new space isn't a bad location, but it seems everything has been paired down. The game options are much less, two 64s with only one or two games and a tabletop arcade/computer setup with a lot of classics but plagued by glitches and some sticky movement in the joystick. If this was just an addition to another bar it wouldn't bug me much, but since this is a part of their brand and marketing I feel it should be closer to the level it once was at the previous location. The second thing which bothered my drinking partner, and a few others from what I've read, is the service. The bartender seemed to dislike making eye contact anytime we interacted with her, which for a job that relies on tips, left me confused. The tap list still features some good local options, but until they work out their new location drama I'll be going directly to the source for my brews. read more

I recently went to Monkey Barrel with my friends this past Tuesday, 6/18/19 to play Office Trivia. Everything started off great, we were excited and the place got really lively...Then things took a turn for the worst. A bartender comes over to give us beers that we didn't order, he says that a guy had bought us drinks. We were a little taken aback, but I quickly reached out to him to thank him. He said he liked doing nice things..I said thank..... He then proceeded to ask me if I was Gay, I told him yes, and he said that's cool and that his Uncle was gay...I said nice... He then tells me that "being gay is wrong and that is something that I am going to have to deal with when I see God. He then asks me if I have ever been burned before, I say no, and he says that's what it's going to be like when I go to hell, if I don't change my ways. I tell him I don't agree, he leaves and I think that its over. My friend reaches out to an older male bartender and asks about the guy, we don't tell him what happened. His response is "don't worry about him, he bought yall free drinks and brushed us off". At this point everyone at the table is uncomfortable, because he hit on my friends girlfriend when he went to turn in our answer. The guy then comes back to our table and gives me a shot of jagger. I think to myself, why is he still talking to me. He then says, i'm really sorry you're a "faggot", you gotta get right and asked me if I was religious, and I tell him yes and I tell him that I think i'm fine. He then walks away and sits at the bar to have some more beers. To my glee, he doesn't come talk to us again, and we quickly leave after trivia night is over. First let me say, my friends & I grew up on the Northside & this place, the people, and the service, are not Northside old school quality. IDK what it was like prior to Covid, however its a get it yourself place now- go get your own drink and food, with zero order to the entire process. The music (a band) was terrible. My friends & I decided to give it a shot- we stayed about 2 hours, sat in the former parking lot at a table, and the distancing was great. Each time we went in to "get it ourselves", we were masked up as was every other patron. However, at the end of our night when we went in to pay our tab and do a shot, we walked in from out, and so many people had congregated at the bar (which per precautions are not supposed to do so) and none, not a single one, had a mask on but the bartender. Now let me be clear and say I am against masks to begin with so that is not my complaint..... As we were talking w the long haired blonde, thin bartender about closing out and ordering a shot, she tells me that we need to have our masks on. So I said "like everyone else" and looked down the bar to the right and left... the bartender walked away and as I watched her, she told everyone they had to move away from the bar, that they can not drink at the bar, and they had to put masks on. How is it that, when we walked in, she had just gotten done talking w/ the guys to our right who were maskless, yet can tell me we need to mask up.... and then when she gets called out, she clears the bar of every other maskless offender (with slight attitude btw). Needless to say we did not buy another oz of anything after that & won't again. Monkey Barrell needs to move away from that spot to boulder where,no apologies for saying this, you would fit in much better. Wait staff was rude when I asked if I could have a game other than the broncos game on one tv. Menu is thoroughly underwhelming. Just sandwiches. Not impressive. I don't mind bartenders who drink although I find it incredibly unprofessional to let customers and children see you taking shots while you're on the clock (tall male bartender). But the thing that really got under my skin was watching him take about 4 shots meanwhile my whole table's (4 people) glasses were empty. Took forever to get the check so we could finally leave. What a waste of space. Jimmy johns would be more useful in that spot. Won't be returning. read more

Great location...... and that's where it stops. Happy hour drinks are $8 and the food is skimpy. They say carbones sandwiches but all bread and no meat. If you have $$ drinks at least it should be killer service and sorry the answer is no. The price tag for a neighborhood bar is a swing and a miss. They said that the $20 we had to put down as a deposit for a trivia reservation went towards our tab and then gave us a gift card and said we couldn't use it till next time. What a joke. Trivia was not electronic and we had no server. All bar service with only 2 bar tenders. Very slow. Waste of money to Uber outside of town. We were told a $20 deposit went to our bill that night but when we tried to apply the credit, we were told we could not use this credit tonight even though the Facebook post told otherwise. This place is a rip off. Tiny, almost slider size meat in a bun. You pay to reserve a table for trivia and they don't apply it to your bill. Then if you leave a bad review they message you and harass you. They should say sorry and how can we do a better job. I wanted to like this place but it just wasn't meant to be. Had the Philly Cheese Steak/French Dip hybrid a few weeks ago and it was absolutely delicious. I'm a chef and know a great sandwich when I taste one! Went back to have it again and it was disgusting. The meat was burned, the bread stale and there was no cheese on it. Asked the bartender to put cheese, which they did but continued to tell me there was cheese on it, I just couldn't see it. Seriously. Not to mention the music was so loud that our table couldn't even have a conversation while we ate. My friend asked to have the music turned down, but was growled at. Monkey Barrel has some things going for it...great location and decent space. However, those things mean nothing if the experience and environment aren't up to standards. My biggest complaint is the cleanliness. You can smell urine just walking by the restrooms (puke). The decor looks like a teenage boys bedroom. And the service could be better. This place is a joke. Having never been here we gave it a shot for their Talking Heads, B52s, etc DJ tribute night. The bands featured were the least of the playlist. Tried to order food from Benny Blanco's. After waiting 15 minutes to place an order (no one else at the window) I was told there were other people a head of me waiting to place their order. WTF? Never was able to get any food. "Video games" consisted of Mario Cart in the booths and a couple of pinball machines. Might be okay for a local watering hole although the bar is cramped. Super weird vibe. We went to eat Benny Blancos pizza. Got to the door and was told there was a paid event going on but when we said we were there for the pizza they let us in for free. That was the best part since the girl at the door was so nice. However it was down hill from there. There was not place to sit. We went to the counter to order the pizza and no one ever came. A woman in front of us said she had been waiting for 15 minutes and no one would take her order. Then she was told that there were other people in front of her so they couldn't take her order. Absolutely the worst food ever. Service is horrible. Ive been there. twice and only 1 or 2 other customers and server/bartender didn't seem like she wanted to make any money. The owner must not know or seem to care. I don't see how anyone can write a good review about this place. I think it has great patio and open space so it has such potential, but they charge 6 bucks for beer and the food is like the cook is on suicide watch. So I live rather close, and I have frequented this bar a handful of times. While it has all the ingredients for a very cool hang out spot I will say the service can be a little off. After spending a few hours here a few weekends ago and ordering several drinks and starters I went to close my tab. My girlfriend, our other friend, and myself had all started separate tabs. The bartender had no clue what everyone had ordered, and charged my girlfriend for an extra drink while telling our other friend "she didn't have to worry about her tab" because she was about to get off work and she didn't know where our friends tab was.. Just seemed a little disorganized/unprofessional which is frustrating. I will say there is a great selection of craft beer and they have the impossible burger which is cool because I'm a vegetarian. read more

Welcome to Sunnyside, Monkey Barrel!! Great food. Had the pasta dinner with sausage. The sausage was excellent, the pasta well cooked, the sauce was a little watery for my liking and I'm not a big fan of the large onion pieces. But otherwise, it was a fine meal. The salad was simple but very delicious and fresh. Overall, I'm excited to have them in our neighborhood. Can't wait for the expanded space. read more

I came here as it was super close to the Airbnb I'm staying at. Really great atmosphere. I unknowingly walked in on the premiere of The Bachelor, the place was pretty full and the show was on almost every television. They did have some football playing in the actual bar area. I had a sour and ipa, both were tasty. My tots were a little soggy, but I did get them covered in green chile. The staff were friendly and both bartenders made sure to make some conversation with me. We gave this place two tries and have been absolutely disappointed on both occasions. First, when we were there just for drinks the bartenders were too involved in their own drama, flirting, and attempting to be cute to bother with any guests. The second was with a group of friends after hiking- we just wanted a quick drink and some food. We all ordered at once (drinks and food) with the hopes that the sandwiches and salad would be quick and easy. To our disappointment, our food all came out at different intervals after about 45 minutes. Our food was brought out by at least three different people, all of whom seemed indifferent about their jobs or helping guests have an enjoyable time. This bar/restaurant should be a neighborhood hit due to its location, but unfortunately they have dropped the ball on their entire concept. read more

Kicking myself for not coming in here sooner! We live in the neighborhood, and I've seen the space go through quite a few changes over the years. I came in to get takeout tonight; I hung out at the bar while I waited and was excited to see my favorite cider on tap! Bartender was super nice and everyone else working seemed pleasant. We stopped here on a Saturday night around 11pm a few weeks ago. I didn't know this place existed, I came along with my friend since she had attend a birthday party there. My Moscow Mules were delicious but they ran out of their salads?! Their menu is pretty skimpy and boring. I wish they had more food options. Service was terrible, I had to go to the bar each time I wanted a drink. Only reason they get 3 stars is because of their NINTENDO 64's gaming consoles!!! SAY WHAAAT??? Yes!!! Great atmosphere. Super friendly staff. Great service, hands down the best bar I've been to in Denver. The food is amazing. If you want a taste of the east coast and get yourself a good Italian sandwich this is the place for you. They also feature several booths with Nintendo 64's at each one, 4 controllers on each. Classic arcade and Atari era games are playable at the table nearest the bar. They have live music on the weekends, and two patios with awnings so you don't have to bake in mile high sunlight. The other more important thing, and what I was told when I moved into the neighborhood was if you want fairly priced beverages and food this is the place to go. The Monkey Barrel is also home to Carbone's, a Sunnyside neighborhood staple. Family owned and operated the food is just as good as it ever was. So what are you waiting for? Hungry or thirsty? The food and drinks were good and the price point was fair. This is NOT a place for kids under 5. Not sure if it was just the night (Friday at 6:30) but when you have guests delivering food for you and other guests have to go to the bar to order food when they have families with them it felt awkward (luckily the guest server was super nice ). I attended the Sunnyside Music Festival this past weekend and after staying in the park for a while, my friends and I decided to check out this little bar. Well, after having my ID examined by a rather large bouncer I proceeded inside to find the place filled with children and babies. Not only that but their hipster parents had taken all of the tables and there were babies screaming and crying. Why do I need to be treated like my ID is a fake when there's family with large strollers and screaming babies and toddlers in there? Children do not belong in a bar, people! No one under 21 should be allowed! I'm half-tempted to contact the state to look into this. Their drinks were also over-priced and weak. Needless to say, I will not be returning. read more
