I attended the Sunnyside Music Festival this past weekend and after staying in the park for a while, my friends and I decided to check out this little bar. Well, after having my ID examined by a rather large bouncer I proceeded inside to find the place filled with children and babies. Not only that but their hipster parents had taken all of the tables and there were babies screaming and crying. Why do I need to be treated like my ID is a fake when there's family with large strollers and screaming babies and toddlers in there? Children do not belong in a bar, people! No one under 21 should be allowed! I'm half-tempted to contact the state to look into this. Their drinks were also over-priced and weak. Needless to say, I will not be returning. read more

Really wanted to give a good review just moved back into the neighborhood and wanted to find a nice local bar to hang out. Unfortunately I wont be returning. What a mess. Waited over 5 minutes and still no hello or acknowledgement. Two other groups that came in had the same welcoming. Food was sitting at the serve window over 5 minutes getting cold. Even the cook looked upset that the servers and bartenders were too busy chatting with the people at the bar. Disappointing as I was looking forward to getting a Carbone's sandwich which I've loved and missed for years. Us and the other folks left. We tried coming again the next day late in the evening and no one at the bar serving drinks. The 3 other people at the bar all had empty glasses. Again, waited about 5 minutes and left. read more

This place is always understaffed, which means long wait times for orders. Even when the place is empty, we still had to wait 20 minutes for a drink. The sandwiches are good, but the rest of the food is fried bar fare. read more

i absolutely love monkey barrel! it's a mix of dive / high end because they have twenty plus beers on tap. the bar tenders are super attentive and are always there when you need them. i refuse to come here unless Molli is working because she is by FAR the best bartender here. the food and beer is prompt and delicious. would definitely recommend read more

This place has it all, excellent traditional classic northside Italian food. Great energy with timeless rock 'n' roll memorabilia on every wall. Plenty of TVs to watch the game. 70 minutes to never get a sandwich. Server/bartender seems more interested in socializing than working. Who the knows what happens in the kitchen, it's certainly not sandwich construction. 1st let me say, I LOVED Carbones. The Italian #2 was all I wanted when I was pregnant and not eating deli meat, it was the first meal I asked my husband to being me after delivery. I was distraught when they closed and elated when suddenly they reappeared at Monkey Barrel. The sandwiches are still great (i'd done order ahead take out) but after the experience I had the other night, I'll never eat another Carbones sandwich again. We had 90 minutes to eat dinner before needing to be somewhere. Seems like a reasonable amount of time to eat a sandwich, right?! Wrong!! We were seated quickly in a dining room that was freezing cold due to the large garage door being left open to the patio, there was cigarette smoke wafting in, thanks to the smokers standing much closer than the legal limit to the large door. Unpleasant but ok. Our order was placed quickly and then nothing... At 40 minutes, the bartender came over to tell us there had been a large to go order and they were just starting our sandwiches. At 60 minutes, with no sandwiches, I went to the bar and was ignored by the bartender for 5 minutes. He said, rudly, we can wrap them for you or they'd be at the table in a few minutes. I sat back down. 10 minutes later, no sandwiches. We left and will never ever go back. read more

We paid $17 for a Earth Wind and Fire Tribute on Friday, April 5th. We were surprise it was a DJ playing. Everyone who bought a ticket thought a band would be playing for $17. It was suppose to start at 7. I believe he started playing other music at 7:30. The sound system was horrible and there were not enough seats/tables to accommodate everyone who bought a ticket. What is so crazy they were selling VIP tickets for more on the website. There were no one to serve us at our table, so we had to go to the bar to buy our drinks. There was only 2 bartenders and they were really rude. The only good thing about this place the food was good. read more

I've attempted to visit the new location twice. The first time I stopped by, I sat at the bar for over 15 minutes without someone saying hello (I was only one of three people there). I ended up just leaving without any communication from the bar staff. The second time I stopped by was at 11pm on a Friday and the bartender told me they decided to close up for the night. Their website advertises being open until 2am every day. We headed over to Local 46 instead and had a great time at a legitimate neighborhood bar. I was hoping Monkey Barrel could be my new neighborhood spot, but it's come up short so far. read more

We live very close to this place and decided to check it out. After have our IDs scrutinized by a bouncer, yes I said bouncer we go in to discover 2 separate booths with near infant children on the tables. While we understand the bar can't control crap hipster parents who think it is ok to bring kids to a bar, they can prevent them from coming in. As a bar owner, one would hope they would see the liability of having a baby in a bar. We will never go back however if we do see kids on the patio or entering the bar we will contact whomever deals with their liquor license ASAP. Can we please keep kids out of bars?
