Until today, I had never patronized The Model Bakery in Walnut Creek. However, I had heard some good things about it. Today I placed an order over the phone for pick up. The person answering the phone (I later learned that her name is Saloni) was an absolute delight to speak with - extremely upbeat and effervescent. I explained to her that I had a disability and asked her if someone could bring my order to my car when I arrived. Without missing a beat, she answered "absolutely, just call us when you arrive, and I will run out your order." Because my pick up order was a little bit complicated, I had to call Saloni back to complete my order. When I called back, she picked up the phone and knew immediately who I was and the order that I needed to complete. I ordered a custard danish, ham and cheese sandwich, tater tots, four packages of English muffins, tomato soup and a slice of coconut cream pie. True to her word, upon my arrival at The Model Bakery Saloni immediately ran out of the restaurant, dodging traffic all the while, and delivered my order to me. Every component of my order was absolutely FANTASTIC. I have a new breakfast/lunch spot on my list and that is "The Model Bakery." My wife and my 94 year-old mother are in complete agreement. My initial experience was a really good one. What really helped was the baked goods happy hour M-F starting at 3pmish. HH consisted of 30% off baked good and coffee drinks. Which word is out, because at 3pm, there was a line. PS: Their famed English muffins sell out. Even at about 1pm they were already out. Baked goods of breads and cookies: I've had better, but still good... again, at that 30% off HH discount, well worth it. I ended up picking up a baguette, an array of croissants and cookies. The chocolate chip was soft and buttery, while the peanut butter chocolate chip cookie was a thicker drier consistency. The baguette was more airy vs a denser variety. While I enjoy the thicker style bread, everyone did enjoy the fresh baked bread. For lunch, I went with the chicken salad and in lieu of a croissant, I had it on a roll. For $15, it could have come with a tiny side salad, but it was really good featuring sliced apples. It was very mayo forward, which I enjoyed. Not the most filling, but again, these days, that's standard. The place is very French patisserie/cafe looking, which is fun and a nice vibe for a Euro lunch. Seemingly, the one gripe is the system.. and I agree. The lovely lady at the register said my sandwich would be out quickly as it's an easy one to prepare... however, it took about 10+ minutes. Overall, a welcomed cafe addition to downtown Walnut Creek. They have a full lineup of cooked menu items for breakfast and lunch from benedicts to smash burgers, so I'm intrigued. Located right on N. Main Street, parking can be challenging, and the lines can be long, but when you get your food, you'll know it was worth it. I ordered a mixed mushroom tartine and a dozen muffins, both to go. The tartine was delicious, lots of mushrooms, Straccitella, herbs, and a perfectly cooked egg. Been meaning to go to this bakery ever since they opened and I finally went a couple weeks ago with my husband. I got lucky as there was no line! I ordered a few pastries all of which we delicious. We decided to go back again the following weekend to try their breakfast. There was a bit of a line on a Monday morning, but line was moving efficiently. Food was great, service was great, and the ambience in the cafe was perfect. There's not a whole lot of seating, but shouldn't be a problem and we went on what looked like a busy morning. Visited Model Bakery recently and overall it was a decent experience. The pastries and coffee were good, and the atmosphere has a nice rustic industrial style. However, some parts of the interior and table finishes appeared noticeably worn and chipped, which affected the overall impression of the space. I lucked out and got here before the lunch rush which is good because if I am somewhere new, ordering can be overwhelming. I knew going in I was going to get some English muffins to go. If Oprah raved about them, I need to find out why. I also picked up some muffins for our Saturday muffins and coffee tomorrow, as well as a morning bun. Once you place the order, you walk around to find a seat or wait for your order. There's a pickup line for beverages and for food. The person I ordered from was courteous and helpful. I was in the area with family late 2023 and saw that they were working on the location and finally got to visit when I was in the area late 2024. For the amount of traffic rolling through, especially the holidays, I thought the service was very friendly and efficient. I actually ended up visiting this place twice during my last trip to the East Bay area. The first trip, they sold out of the muffins for the day, so I just ordered some foodstuffs to dine in with my niece and nephew - we got the egg salad sandwich, some pastries/cookies, hot chocolate and coffee. With the tip of ordering ahead of time, or I think you weren't able to because it was on a holiday, I just arrived early in the morning (and there was a line) to get some of their English muffins. After being successful on my second trip, I wanted to savor the experience by ordering a breakfast sandwich and a coffee before leaving. On both trips, I though the food and beverages were all great. And I have to say the English muffins are probably my favorite anywhere. Very buttery, but with a nice, slight crisp, I love having them with a little additional butter and jam. Sooo good. Before this location opened, I would get them once in a while through my brother. His in laws come down from the Napa/ Sonoma County area and they usually bring some for him and his fam.
