Had my 2003 Carrera there for the 60k service and it was good. I can't say it is the cheapest place I could have gone to. Even with me bringing most of the needed parts like oil, spark plugs, etc the invoice ended up being the same quote as without parts. With that said, I will be coming back. The place is well maintained, trusted by a lot of local Porsche owners for multiple generations, as a result, I feel safe bringing my car there. I take my 2001 Boxster and 2004 Cayenne S to Modderman. I trust Dave. He seems to genuinely love Porsches like I do. I recently took my Cayenne in for servicing, and he recognized a little-documented but common problem (tranny oil in the transfer case). My car is white, but I had a red one I had purchased from a used parts wharehouse. I bought a pre-owned 08 Boxster from Porsche of Stevens Creek but the car had never been serviced there so there was no history with the car. Later on I realized that there was a service sticker on the front window (for Modderman) stating when to come back for an oil change. After doing a little research online I figured out the things I should probably ask for at my mileage so I gave Modderman a call and asked if he could look up the history on the car and if the spark plugs were ever done. He took the vin and told me when the plugs were done and also that the coil packs and breaks were done in the last two services as well. Super helpful and very customer loyal to share service information with a new owner! I am due for a service soon so I will continue to take the car there! read more

I've been meaning to write this review for several months now as David Modderman did a 4-wheel brake replacement and service on my 2006 Boxster S at the end of October. He was 100% upfront and honest about the costs and time frame for the repairs and I saved nearly 50% over what I would have paid at the dealer for the same work. The work was done perfectly and to the highest standard, he provided me with all of my used parts and an exceptionally detailed explanation of the work performed and even helped me out with another issue I had with my vehicle free of charge. My 2011 Boxster needs a minor maintenance and an appt. with David needs to be booked two weeks in advance. As it turns out, it was worth the wait. There was no wait time in handing over and receiving the car back from a friendly David. My car also had a bad clutch switch and David took care of it. First time customer at Modderman. I needed ac work and many shops won't touch my car. After calling around a few places, I decided Modderman was the best choice. I was right in coming here. They called me to update on the progress and provided a dead on estimate. No up sell and no pressure. Many shops will tell you your car will blow up if you do this and that. Not here. Steve and Dave Modderman were very pleasant. They are also located 10-15 walk from Caltrains station at San Antonio. This makes drop off and pickup fairly easy. read more

Today, I went to the Modderman service shop and talked to Mr. David; I've the transmission leak on the Porsche 911, and want to know how much it cost to fix it; He said that he needs to look at it first, and it will cost $160 to see where it leaks. I asked him how much it cost to take the transmission out and put it back, he said $2500; I asked how much it cost to replace the seals, he said that it could cost up to $10,000...pause! then said to replace the transmission. So I said" thank you, Dave" and as I was walking out of the shop, he said to another customer:"He wants it for free (estimation)!". I turned backed and told David that I never said that I want a free estimation, and he should not talk behind my back. DAVID is very rude, and does not have professional manners. Rudeness is toxic, and rude behavior can impede productivity, emotions and overall health. read more

I was having transmission/clutch problems with my 2006 Carrera, and went looking for a competent mechanic. I have three criteria in looking for a mechanic: 1) They must have experience with Porsche's. 2) They have been in business for some extended period of time. 3) They should present an "honest businessman" appearance, without some gaudy shop with high overhead. In other words, they don't have to charge an arm and a leg just to maintain appearances. I'm very pleased to report that Modderman met all of these criteria, and my experience with Modderman was fantastic! Their initial diagnosis was a slipping clutch (which I subsequently verified before they did the work), and give me a ballpark estimate of the work, but at the same time were careful to say there could be other problems once they got the transmission out of the car. Modderman called after they got the transmission out, and reported the need for a new clutch and pressure plate only. They invited me to inspect the car, transmission, and clutch, which I did. The conditions were exactly as they reported. The work was done over a two day period (they didn't order parts until the transmission was out of the car and they could confirm what parts were needed), and they delivered the car as promised. I couldn't be happier with the result. The car drives and shifts as well or better than new. I will definitely return to Modderman for any future Porsche service requirements. BTW, my search for a mechanic included a trip to one of the local dealers, where I got a considerably higher bid for the work. When I complained to the dealer about their cost and asked if they could recommend a local mechanic where I could get the work done cheaper, the guy said "Modderman in Mountain View." read more

Worked out very well. Boxster would not start. Dealers are far away from Los Altos, and so expensive. Would like a closer alternative, but nervous about non-dealer. Modderman was the closest shop and had a good Yelp rating, so I took a chance. The owner (Dave) was able to get the car in right away. Simple problem to fix (fuel pump), and car was ready next day. What I liked about Dave is that he seems very eager to please - I think he really likes the cars and the owners. No complaints about his service. From a cost standpoint, it wasn't cheap, but Porsche repairs are never cheap. I can't say whether Modderman was less expensive than the dealer, but he did a thorough review of the bill with me, showed me the part that he replaced, and it seemed as though the cost was justified. read more

Do NOT take your car here!!!! I have a convertible Porsche Boxster and took it to Dave Modderman for repair. The owner, Dave, told me that it would be $1,000 in parts alone - not to mention labor (a total of $3k worth of repairs). These rates seemed high, so I asked for a list of the parts needed and did my own research. He was absolutely price gouging. Here are 3 examples (note - these are retail prices for original parts - not web discounts, not going direct to the distributor. This is what the retail price should be): Push Rod: Actual cost for original Porsche part = $49; Modderman's charge = $201. Guide arm: Actual cost for original Porsche part = $75; Modderman's charge = $207. Water drip tray: Actual cost for original Porsche part = $75; Modderman's charge = $145. I said that I was happy to pay for the labor but would prefer to buy my own parts. He then refused to do the work and said that he would only do the work if I bought the parts from him. This was a hug red flag on how exorbitant the rest of his labor fees were as well. He then wanted to charge me $515 to get my car back with the top back on... no repairs - just return my car in the exact same condition in which I brought it in. This is against the law (for details see: http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResources/07_AutoRepair/Auto_Repair_Guide.html). The only way I got my car back was threatening to file a claim with the Department of Consumer Affairs (which I am doing). In the end, it cost me $300 for absolutely nothing. The entire process was an absolute nightmare! I can't imagine ever being desperate enough to take an automobile here. If you decide to go anyway, be sure that you are okay with being ripped off. Do not be fooled - he seems like such a nice guy. If being taken advantage of does not work for you, then this is not the place to take your car. BTW: I called another service company. Instead of charging me $1,000 in parts - they sold it to me at their cost = $200. read more

I brought a Porsche in for a pre-purchase inspection, and the whole process was painless. I had a problem with my tire pressure monitoring system on 2013 Cayenne S after a separate tire company replaced them. I went to a porsche dealership and they told me that i needed to replace the tire pressure sensors because the battery life is nearing its end of life after 5 yrs, costing $1400. Ok, but they gave me a printout that said it still had 120 month life on them. Anyway, i always get the impression from the dealer that they are always recommending work which doesnt need to be done. I researched for a porsche repair specialist and found Modderman. I found the large service repair garage reassuring because clearly, they were porsche specialists. Dave took 30 minutes to diagnose, test drive the TPM and was able to reset the TPM into learning mode. He said that should do the trick but if it doesnt, the repair cost would be $800 (not 1400). I drove it around for awhile and the sensors resynced with the TPM after 15 miles. So this is a huge shoutout to Dave who clearly loves Porsches, took the time to help me and then saved me $1400. He's earned my trust for all future repairs. read more

Great work, good price, friendly service. If they're busy, it might take a bit longer than your dealership as they don't have a giant shop with a team of mechanics, But usually plenty fast, and if not they're worth any wait. They're able to tackle big jobs as well as smogs, and able to take on unusual cars - I've got an old 914 w Chevy V8 and lots of custom work and parts - they aren't scared to work on anything! read more

Modderman Service has worked on my 914-6 since 2004 and I've been consistently pleased with their work and Dave's honest and personable approach. For example, last July while on the freeway at the peak of a heat spell, a brake caliper worked loose forcing a quick stop and tow. At the shop, in scorching 104 degree heat and soft driveway tar, Dave and his technician immediately checked out the car. They secured the caliper, inspected and tightened the other three, charged a fair fee and got me back on the road in about an hour. Superb customer care, quality service for factory and modified cars at reasonable rates. A rare find! read more

My boyfriend and I chose Modderman because of its high Yelp ratings when our Porsche 911's engine broke, but shortly realized that we had made a big mistake. David Modderman is not a honest business owner, and completely misled us on the value of the car. David told us that the most we could get for our car in its current state with a broken engine was ~$2,000. He offered to buy the car from us as is for ~$2,500, or replace the engine for ~$8,000-10,000. Fortunately, we did a sanity check on the selling price on eBay and discovered that cars similar to ours with broken engines sold for at least $10,000-$12,000! It was clear that David was hoping to take advantage of our ignorance and lowball us on price. Had we trusted David, we would have been cheated out of at least $8,000. Once we figured out the pricing issue, we immediately told David that we would like to take the car back and sell it ourselves. In the end, we were able to sell our car via eBay for $12,000. We were very disappointed by the Modderman's dishonesty, and caution future customers to be wary. read more
