140k head gasket and engine overhaul, the destined fate of all Subarus.
    Andrew C.

Kevin has been doing maintenances, repairs, and upgrades for my 08 Forester XT since I moved from Texas to the Bay in 2017. I only trust Kevin on touching my car. Kevin tries his best to educate the customers with the correct knowledge and ways about cars, which might be different from what people said on the internet or on books, so be prepared to step out of the comfort zone. I may not agree with Kevin on everything, but he always says what he sincerely believed and knew, and he has been working on these Subaru cars for decades. He is serious about cars and his work, and will be upfront with the customers with what he can or cannot do. Might not be a best choice for one prefers no-brainer and economic services, but the best for those who want to take best care for their cars.

    Nissan before and after

Went there 2 times recently for CVT transmission service for a Nissan Sentra and Toyota Corolla. When calling around, Kevin was able to provide a quote with a VIN. Some places would not quote and insisted on bringing in the car. The Nissan had a check engine light and my OBD scanner showed DTC code. Kevin was able to explain what my options were and I chose the most inexpensive option (which he recommended). The fix did not work completely, but he confirmed the CVT was in bad shape after opening it up - so the recommendation was the right one. The Toyota Corolla was more straightforward and the condition was good. The Toyota CVT filter was replaced which required removing the bottom pan. This was more work than a simple drain and refill and Kevin did this for a reasonable price. Seems he is a great auto tech for Japanese cars, knows what he was doing, communicates clearly, and has fair pricing. Pics provided by Kevin which was great! And beware buying Nissan with CVT, effectively a total loss since replacing the trans does not seem worth it. Was aware of Nissan CVT issues, but there are folks with 100K miles and more who are doing OK - but guess we lost the lottery here. Please give him a try, he is a small independent shop that deserves your business.

    Cars in the lot.

AutoHQ was recommended to me by a friend, as a professional shop with experienced crew (they do everything from oil change to rebuilding and tuning the engine to win a race). I'm real happy that I gave them a shot. I needed brake service on my Mitsubishi. When I called my dealership, they asked for insane amount of money and would only put stock brake pads. After talking to Kevin at AutoHQ, he offered to do the job for less than a third of the price and would use higher quality ceramic pads. And what is the best, he did all the service on the same day. I was amazed--my dealership would always keep the car for the whole week! Looking forward to come back for the next project.

This is the quote from "Kevin Auto Repair" which are the highest rating auto repair in Mountain View.

Other auto shops insists on selling you parts (so they could make a profit on the parts too). But I'm super picky about what parts are installed on my cars, and George's actually encourages me to bring in parts that I sourced myself, to spare them the trouble of searching for hard-to-find pieces. This is a winner in my book! I noticed the recent construction at the site, was wondering when would George's reopen. A couple of days ago I saw that the snack shop opened, so I went in to check. The clerk told me it's a new business there now, they don't yet have a phone number, it's currently just a gas station (no longer Valero) and snack shop, the auto repair section is closed at this time. He didn't know if George's would reopen elsewhere. Suggesting that I return another time to ask the manager as he might know. I haven't done that yet, but the sudden change makes me sad. If anyone from the old team reads this, I'm the guy with the Audis. If you r shop moved elsewhere, I'll remain your customer wherever you go, as long as you're not too far away. I'm sure other customers feel the same. So please let us know!

I had already done my own diagnostics before drop-off -- swapped the coil pack and spark plug to other cylinders, misfire stayed on cylinder 2, ruling both out. He quoted $600 over the phone using his own parts, which I agreed to. When I showed up, he pulled a bait-and-switch: he would only honor the $600 price if I supplied my own part. I had an OEM Bosch fuel injector at home but hadn't brought it because the original agreement was that he would supply parts. He knew this and still changed the terms at drop-off, forcing me to go home, retrieve my own part, and return -- just to hold him to a price he had already quoted. I told him directly: I do not want this injector thrown in if it isn't confirmed as the cause. I want the misfire fixed. He acknowledged this. He then told me it was 90% likely the coil or plug -- the exact two components I had already tested and eliminated. He installed my injector anyway without confirming it was the fault. It didn't fix the misfire. The quote continued to change. $600 on the phone became $650 in person. He then added carbon cleaning and quoted $900 total. Later he texted $1,000. I had to remind him of his own quote -- he agreed and admitted he didn't remember what he said. I wrote "Cyl 2 misfire" on the work order as the service requested and signed it. He called at 2:25pm saying the car was fixed. I paid $900 and drove home with the engine stumbling worse than before. Scanned the car at home -- P0302 still active and confirmed. A new fault code also appeared that was not present before drop-off. I returned to the shop in good faith and gave them the opportunity to make it right before taking any further action. They refused. $900 paid. My own part used. Bait-and-switch on parts and price. Explicit instructions ignored. Misfire unresolved. Car running worse. BAR complaint filed.
