My car started shaking when braking so I had it towed to Peninsula Auto Repair my insurance company USAA recommended them. I called them about an hour after they opened Ray the amazing guy there and his team had already quickly driven it and figured out that piston was misfiring and then I agreed to their original fee for diagnostic totally worth it. The amount of detail that he gives you about your issue is incredible. Such passionate people about cars. I even had them do another repair that was completely unrelated because I was so happy with our service, I can't recommend them enough. I have four cars. My trustworthy Prius had a brake problem in July- - warning lights and ABS turning off. Most shops around didn't want to deal with a Prius and were pointing me to the Toyota dealer. Through Yelp, I located Peninsula Auto Repair. The shop is located behind the Arco gas station. Ray asked for $150 for a e-diagnosis, and came to the conclusion that the ABS Master cylinder was failing and likely the actuator needed replacement. The whole job was not cheap but probably half of what the dealer would have charged. The part came in and was replaced in a day. Ray is knowledgeable and competent, and very pleasant to deal with. 5 stars. My name is Robert. I am 28 years old. Today I came in to see Ray for the second time in 3 months. The first time, Ray fixed my squeeking squeeling Belt on my toyota scion xb even though I was skeptical because I had just had a mobile mechanic replace it but he didn't do it right. I brought in into Ray and he assured me that he knew what the issue was but would need to put on a new belt. I sprayed all kinds of crap on that belt to quiet it so I knew I probably messed it up. I took a chance on Ray because his pricing was right and he was certain he could get the job done in a timely manner. As an uber and lyft driver, this has become more and more important to me. He fixed my belt situation so good the noise hasn't come back and it was sooooo TERRIBLE before and would keep coming back. I felt like I had a brand new car after he fixed it. Today, my brake and reverse light wasn't working after I personally tried replacing my turn signal that went out. Turns out I didn't put it back in right so it was interferring with my brake and reverse light. Ray didn't try to screw me over with an uncalled for bill. This guy has been so fair with me it's unreal. As a younger guy, I've had alot of bad experiences with mobile mechanics and franchise repair shops. As long as I have any car issues... I'll be going straight to Ray at Peninsula auto repair. I don't have to even think twice. You shouldn't either. You have to give him a chance if you have any issues with your car. When one thinks of new tires the Big Box places come to mind. I have been there, was rushed through tire selection, waited and waited. One time they even broke my driver's seat. Since I trusted Ray and David with the care of my old SUV for many years, they were the ones I turned to in wanting more individualized tires and rims for my brand new SUV rather than the stock tires. This also involves safety issues in realigning the tires. I thought I needed a new AC compressor because the clutch suddenly stopped engaging . Ray checked to see if there were any aftermarket options and didn't find any. He said that, in his experience, lack of aftermarket options usually means that the component doesn't fail very often and we should check the refrigerant and test the AC compressor first. He was right; it turns out that I had a leaky condenser and had run out of refrigerant. He ordered a new condenser and, thankfully, tested it before installing it. The new one was bad, so he got a replacement, verified it worked, and installed it. The condenser was cheaper than a new compressor and solved the problem, which a new compressor wouldn't have done. Easy to deal with, honest, reasonably priced and met his estimated timeline. Awesome! read more

After spending All of our savings traveling 3100 miles from Florida to Palo Alto, California so that my 9 month old daughter could get a liver transplant at Stanford Childrens Hospital my truck died. When it came time to tally the bill he handed me my keys & wished my family the best. Its 1 of the few times this grown man has cried but his generosity in helping a complete stranger brought me to tears. This man has a family of his own & depends on his business to provide for them & not only did he do the labor at no cost he also spent his own $ to pay for the parts needed to fix my truck! I can't thank him enough & I hope that anyone reading this will consider going to Pinellas Auto if your vehicle needs to be fixed. Ray really helped me out when I was in a bind recently. My car wouldn't start and swapping in a new battery didn't help. I walked over to Ray and asked if he could try jumping my car since I lived about 3 blocks away and he didn't hesitate in driving over with a portable jump kit. He figure out it wasn't my battery (doh!) and was able to jump my car and bring it over to this shop. After inspecting my car, he figured out it was corrosion in the battery cable and it ran deep. He cleaned it up for me with a wirebrush and sealed it to prevent further corrosion and sent me on my way. He didn't even charge me for the jumpstart or cleaning since it was just a minor issue. I'm really glad I had him to help me out and look forward to having him service all of my cars in the future. read more

I own a 95 corolla. The transmission was leaking, bad. I spoke to Ray he said he'd charge me $50 to diagnose it and I could drop it off in the morning on a Saturday. After a few hours he called me up and said the car was fixed! I said okay, what was wrong? He said the clamps were lose so he replaced them. I spent the night in Palo Alto, CA and I woke up at 6:30 am to a car that would not turn over. I called my insurance agent and they sent out roadside assistance. Roadside was on site in about 30 minutes and we determined that my battery was not the problem. Tow driver thought it might be a bad distributor. My insurance only covered 5 miles of towing. Driver suggested Peninsula Auto Repair. It was within the five miles. We arrived at the shop around 8:00 a.m. and we had to wait about 10 minutes for the shop to open. I wrapped up paperwork with the tow driver and started talking with the mechanics. I met Ray, the owner. He quoted me $800+ for a new distributor or $400+ for a refurb/used model. Since cash is tight, I opted for the refurb. My girlfriend picked me up and took me to CalTrain and I was at work a little after 10:00 a.m. A few hours later I received a call that the car was ready and that they tracked down a new distributor in the same price range as the refurb! I caught the 4:09 pm CalTrain back to the shop. I arrived around 5:00 pm and they sent a guy out to pick me up. At the end of the day, I was out $640. Peninsula did a fantastic job. Last minute same day service. Honest, positive, "can do"attitude even with my 1991 Honda. And they came through on a new part without breaking the bank. Palo Alto is a bit of a trek for me for regular service but I think I'm going to make peninsula my go-to place for all my under the hood needs! read more

I followed Ray over from a previous shop. I found him originally because he was 2 blocks away. I stayed with him now that he is 5 miles away because he takes such good care of our cars. He brought our poor 1997 Rav 4 back from the dead when the insurance company wanted to total it (he found a new rear door and put it in for 1/3 of what the insurance company said t would be). His estimates are accurate (or turn out better, because he estimates worst case, not best case). Oh, and he doesn't assume I am dumb because I am a woman - he explains things at the right level of detail, and will go deeper if I ask questions. How rare is THAT? Also, he's funny. My car wouldn't start so I looked for repair shops and found that Peninsula Auto Repair was just a 5 minute walk from my house. I called them and Ray helpfully called up a local towing company for me that was cheaper than my auto insurance's. However, once he realized how close I was, he decided to drive out to my car to diagnose it instead of waiting for the towing company. He was quickly able to jump start my car and I drove it back to his shop. After identifying the issue as a dead battery, he further went on to verify that there wasn't an issue with the starter. The battery was replaced quickly and the cost was much lower than I expected. The whole time from calling till leaving with my working car was under 90 minutes! I highly recommend this place.
