Marvin does GREAT PPIs for 911s. The guy is super thorough and spends a fair amount of time going over every detail from exhaust tips to the front bushings. Noting everything that is aftermarket replacements to factory specs. Not only is the report 6-8 pages long, he will spend the time to review every item with you. He tells it like it is, rendering fact from whatever fiction you would imagine or seller tells you. Our PPI on a 997.2 was very fair at his rate and well worth the piece of mind knowing the full story when you're about to drop five figures plus on a used car. The reality of it all is he'll practically spend a whole day going over a car, you tell me what your mechanic charges an hour. I came to Marvin for a pre-purchase inspection on a 997 Carrera GTS that I was interested in buying. Marvin's inspection was extremely, thorough, and detailed - even going above and beyond by walking through the inspection results/car for over an hour. I took my Porsche 928 to Marvin at The RennShop because of a mysterious problem with my brakes. A few years earlier, Marvin had resolved a tricky ignition issue on my car. I remembered his emphasis on proper diagnostics before starting any repair work - more like a good MD, but specialized in Porsches (a "Porschologist"). His squeaky clean shop and great communications perfectly fit that picture. Marvin went through the whole car in detail. He then put together a treatment plan for healing all its ailments. My first encounter with Marvin, the President/Owner of the shop has been quite an experience. I have a 2000 Boxster that needed a 60K maintenance service, a new battery, a check engine light problem, and other little items needing attention. Marvin was very attentive and courteous over the phone, had a great amount of knowledge/experience, and such an awesome personality and overall excellent customer service. Took my car to his shop which was very clean, organized, and not to mention, certified green (earth friendly) mechanic shop! He only carries and recommends the best parts for your Porsche with outstanding prices!!! Marvin appears to do good work, but prepare to pay an arm and a leg to find out! Keep in mind this review is not in the actual work, but the process beforehand. I hope this will be helpful for some of you. My Boxster needs a clutch job. Now, I understand for most cases, the flywheel should be replaced if there are hotspots. However, there is also a chance that simple resurfacing may be an option. From our phone conversation to our in person meeting, Marvin continually stresses to have the $800 flywheel replaced - without actually taking apart the clutch to see it. It's reasonable to TRY and upsell, but if the customer is continually saying that s/he must see the evidence first, then BACK OFF. First fail. So here's what happens.. I get my Boxster towed in, he drives it for about 5 feet, takes a quick look under the car, proceeds to type up a proposal, and it amounts to a whopping $4,100. This includes the clutch work and a whole bunch of extra stuff. To test him, I ask what he thinks is 'mission critical' and he has the stomach to say "All of it." Rubbish! Most of the things he recommended are 'nice-to-haves.' What started off as a $2,000 job has more than doubled. Second fail. Next, the really fun part, I suggested we focus on the most important thing: the CLUTCH, and I'll let him know while he works on the car to replace the flywheel or not. I told Marvin to take the mentioned area apart, show me why it should/not be replaced, I'll then call my friend who's a retired porsche mechanic and relay Marvin's opinion, and then make my own decision. All this should not take more than 5 minutes. I understand this is not common practice in the auto shop industry, but if a customer is guaranteeing you a certain amount of business, what's wrong with him/her feeling comfortable?? Marvin then tells me he senses that I don't trust him and he is not comfortable with doing the job. Wait. WAIT A SEC. I don't trust you? OF COURSE I DONT TRUST YOU. I'VE ONLY KNOWN YOU FOR 10 MINUTES. Our dialogue then proceeds something like this: me: "you're telling me you're not ok with me calling my friend to get his quick opinion so I can feel more comfortable with the job?" Marvin: "I can't keep the job stalled in the shop, I'm on the clock" me: "I will be in the shop when you are working on my car and my friend will be on standby on the phone. It will not take more than 5 min." Marvin: "Where are you going to sit?" me: "Here, in your office." Marvin: "You can't sit here" me: "Then I'll wait in my other car in the parking lot" Marvin: "You can't do that" (at this point you can see Marvin's hands and body twitching with anger) me: "Then I don't feel comfortable with this either." (I stand up and leave) I proceed to call 3 other shops and every single one of them were completely ok with me getting a second opinion while they worked on my vehicle. In fact, one shop was even willing to CALL ME with their findings, let me chat with my friend, and wait for my decision. Ultimately that's the shop I went with and the owner did an amazing job. If you want Marvin to touch your Porsche, you better prepare to have an uncompromising trust in him, and open up your wallet to everything he recommends. If, on the other hand, you want your trust won first, there are plenty of other exceptional and friendly Porsche mechanics. read more

Just went in for a major service a few days ago... As expected, the job is done right again. Good work! After reading other awkwardly long reviews, I couldn't help thinking... Are we talking about the same place?? In my experience, expectation, communication, and satisfaction are interrelated. Marvin has always been upfront and accurate about his estimate. So ultimately It is really up to me how far to go with him. Of course, I would not expect him to work for free as everybody has the right to make a living. For those who like to rant, I would say perhaps they should check their expectation, communication and stop wasting others time. Quality doesn't come cheap and it is pay now or pay later. Think how much saving there will be if you have to redo a repair again. read more

What can i say about Dr. Marvin. Yeah he is a Porsche doctor to the max and knows his stuff really well. My baby (911-997S) needed an oil change so based off of these reviews, I made an appointment to have it checked. First time I made an appointment, I had to cancel due to work related stuff. This time I told myself that I will definitely make it in. I did price comparison and contemplated going to the dealer vs. Marvin and was completely double minded. Ofcourse the dealer would give me a loaner car while mine is being serviced etc.etc. I still decided to give Marvin a try and had my wife give me a ride back from his shop. I was about 2 hours late and had completely forgotten about my appointment until he called during that morning. He was still cool about it and serviced my car. Took him about 6 hours to do a full service but it was all worth it. He did a complete inspection and found couple more faults which the dealership needs to check. Overall I was impressed by his enthusiasm and knowledge of Porsche altogether. He is very detailed and loves to explain stuff if you dont know certain features etc. Highly recommended. read more

I was back at Marvin's recently for a 15k service, plus a couple of other minor items. His shop is amazingly clean, like always. My kids love going there too. He has gotten very busy, so appointments are harder to get, but Marvin will work with you. I was there another time to check on some possible tire noise. He is meticulous. Hard for me to give anything except 5 stars to Marvin. Its rare and so refreshing to see any kind of business care this much about customer service. He literally spent almost an hour with me after the car has been repaired to go over a free 5 page check list of all inspected systems in the car. I have been Boxstering for 9 years and know dealership and independent Porsche mechanics. I heard a new independent Porsche shop had recently opened. I went by the shop to check it out since I was due for a clutch replacement at 67,000 miles. Marvin Weitz is the owner of RennShop. I remembered his face from one of the local dealerships. Marvin worked for 2 local Porsche dealerships over the years and then opened his own shop. I spoke to Marvin at his shop a few times. He knew about the problem issues with my vehicle. He also has most of the factory tools and a PST2 and a Bosch Hammer, which is the diagnostic computers. I then spoke to some of the dealership mechanics I have known for years when Marvin use to work next to them. I checked out Marvin, and he checked out. Marvin replaced the clutch, resealed the engine. and replaced the oil separator and fuel filter. My 1997 Boxster now drives like it did when I bought it. It's been a long time since I wrote a Yelp review. However, with the service that Marvin provided, I felt obligated to put a note up here too. I was driving from Seattle to LA in my meticulously maintained 2001 Porsche Boxster S. While in SF, the clutch decided to crap out on me. I was able to limp down to San Jose to stay with a friend, where I would find someone to work on my car. After talking with Marvin, and telling him that I needed to be back in Seattle in 5 days, he assured me that he was up to the task of fixing my clutch and getting me back on the road ASAP. He put the other customers on hold and fixed my car immediately. The problems were extensive and he spent more than hour just explaining to me what he was going to do with my car. He showed me the parts, the issues, and told me all the costs up front. Of course he tried to upsell me on other repair items. He runs a business, that's what they do. I'm still not sure if he was upselling me or if he is just that OCD and he wanted everything on the car to be perfect. I politely declined the extra work, and he was totally cool with that. The car was completed on time, and he came in on his day off so that I could pick it up in time for my trip back to Seattle. On top of all of that, he did a 6 page inspection of my car and gave me a list of things to fix once I returned to Seattle. He didn't need to do that, because he knew I wasn't coming back to see him and therefore I couldn't be repeat business. He assured me that he does this inspection for everyone as a courtesy. He spent an hour, on his day off, going over the inspection report line by line. Holy crap. I've never seen a mechanic as dedicated and detailed oriented as Marvin. I may drive back to San Jose each year just to have HIM complete my yearly maintenance. Whomever gives Marvin less than 5 stars has obviously never been to another mechanic before. Marvin is the man. Never have I met someone as passionate about Porsches as Marvin. I was buying a used Porsche in the south bay, and before I put my hard earned money down, I wanted an expert to go over the car. No only did Marvin go over the entire car with a fine hand, but he pointed out every little problem with the car. The money I paid for his services were well worth it, and I learned a lot about my future car as well. If you have a passion for Porsches, there is no better person to go to than Marvin. I can tell you that Marvin has an artisanal appreciation for these amazing cars. His inspection took his entire attention for the better half of a Saturday, and I spent 2 hours discussing the car with him at 8PM! Never did I feel rushed...quite the opposite...I felt like Marvin was getting just as much out of talking with me that I was getting out of him!! I didn't get any service work from Marvin, but I can only imagine how thorough he would be with any car he gets his hands on, especially Porsches. If you are looking for a bargain, a jiffy lube, or some half ass service on your Porsche, this is not the place for you. If you want your car to be pampered and taken care of the way a fine automobile should be, then you will never spend a better penny on your car than at The Rennshop. I didn't actually go to this shop, but I called to find out their hours. I called at nearly 9:30 at night since the information isn't online. I expected a machine but was surprised when someone answered. The shop owner wasn't able to help me out since they only handle Porshe cars, but he was very gracious and recommended someone else and gave me their number so that I could get a used car inspected. The RennShop speializes in all Porsche automobiles. I had a 4 cylinder engine built for my 914 by a local machine shop, but I needed someone to swap out the old engine. The job entailed a little more than just bolting up the new motor. Marvin handled everything from fabing up a bracket to relocate the throttle cable, to redoing some of the wiring harness to make things work. The end result is beautiful and functional, with close attention to details. I wouldn't take a Porsche anywhere else for service. read more

I rarely write reviews on yelp, so when I do, it means something. I recently brought my Porsche to Marvin for one of the major services. I found him by reading recommendations in Porsche online forums, as well as here on Yelp. Everyone had similar high marks for him, so I decided to give him a shot. My first impression was that his shop was cleaner than most shops I've been in, which was a good sign. There were also a variety of different (and only) P-cars in the shop, so it's good to know that he specializes in my make. Marvin really takes his time with his services and is more thorough than the dealer will ever be. He did a thorough inspection, told me what my car needed beyond the regular service, but wasn't pushy about it. He even fixed something gratis. I am the type of person that has tons of questions and he patiently answered all of them. To top it off, he personally washed my car. Rennshop is a one-man shop, so it has it's pros and cons. Marvin definitely prides himself in his work, but that also means that services take a little longer and someone may or may not pick up the phone. He'll usually return your call within a couple hours though. You also don't get a loaner car. All in all, I highly recommend this place and will definitely be bringing my car back. read more

I had a great experience at The Rennshop. I agree with the other reviews this place is amazing. Marvin knows the Porsche very well and his work is extremely detailed. He was pushy about anything and his work exceeded my expectations. I also think his prices are fair for top notch work. If you want to put your head in the sand and try to go on the cheap with your Porsche, this isn't your place but if you are concerned with the longevity of your car then I highly recommend. Good, fast, cheap... pick two as the old adage goes. Marvin is GREAT. Not good. He's a one man shop, so it takes more time than you'd like sometimes. He's cheaper than the dealer and on par with other independents in the area. GREAT means enthusiasm, nearly insane attention to detail (he loves these cars with a passion), and the car is CLEANER than when you dropped it off. It's been a while since I wrote a Yelp review but felt that I had to after my conversation with Marvin. I have a 2013 Cayenne and it's in need of an oil change. I was planning on going to Rennshop to get it done. When I got on the phone with Marvin, he informed me that it would take 1-3 years before the independents could work on the car (due to accessibility to current Porsche diagnostic tools). He asked where I lived and work so as to steer me to a dealership that could be serve my needs. Marvin was very thorough in his explanations and was very giving of his time; even though he knew that I would not be an immediate customer of his. My husband loved his Porsche, and he would only take it to Marvin at the Rennshop. We recently needed to get a more family friendly car, but while he had it, he only trusted Marvin with it. The RennShop is absolutely everything a discerning Porsche owner seeks in a Porsche shop. Marvin, the owner, is a hands-down expert on Porsche. He focuses only on Porsche -- all day, every day. He is very personable and honest, if there is a problem, he explains what it is, what the options are and what he would do to solve it if the car were his. Marvin was previously a tech at a local Porsche dealership, and what he is doing on his own will put any dealerhip's service department out of business. The shop is so clean that it sparkles and you could eat off the floor. His equipment is state of the art and he is very, VERY knowledgeable. His prices are fair and competitive. Marvin definitely goes the extra mile to help his customers at all times. When I needed a place to store my '07 C4S for a week while the wheels were being powder coated, Marvin made room in his shop. He even dismounted and mounted the wheels and, when I offered to pay him for storage and for his time, he wouldn't even take my money. My wife and I had to force a gift card on him!
