This guy really knows what he's doing. If you have a VW and don't know what you're doing or need something difficult or intricate performed, this is definitely the place for you. He gave us a quote for all of the work we needed for our new-to-us 1972 VW Microbus (which was a lot!). He even let us know when he found other things that may or may not need replacing, discussed options with us & showed us everything he did when we picked it up. Yes, things cost money - especially someone's time & expertise. Just get a quote before you have your work completed.. and pay someone what they're worth. Period. Just because something costs money that doesn't mean you're being overcharged. It simply means you're being charged. You wouldn't do it for free, would you? Of course not. Having said all of that: if you want quality work at a very reasonable rate, this is the place for you. Too bad all of the previous owners of our VW (and the others we saw for sale) didn't feel the same way. So many people have "a friend" work on their VW... and therein lies the problem. Joe is the classic air-cooled VW man! Super knowledgable, honest and down to earth real. Took him my VW shortly after I bought a few months back. Joe found, explained and fixed everything that the previous owner neglected. His rates are fair and he even help me save money by recommending me to order parts from the internet and told me the companies he normally uses. Most mechanics try and make profit off of their customers by buying parts off the internet and charging more (I.E. a part may cost $100 bucks but they charge the customer $150) but not Joe. He told me the companies he calls for parts and explained why the German made parts are better to go with than the Brazilian or Chinese parts. So I ordered some replacement parts from jbugs.com and tmi and brought them to Joe and sure enough he got everything up and running. Checked out the entire car, fixed several shorts in the system, got the engine running smooth as silk, installed a short shifter, redid the brakes, got rid of some oil leaks and countless other things! Joe is very knowledgeable about air-cooled cars! He has worked on them for decades. He can rebuilt entire engines and transmissions for your VW and suggest what is best the best route to go about getting what you expect from your air cooled VW. Even though I live in San Jose and there are two closer air cooled vw shops closer tom me, I rather drive to Joe. His rates are better, his customer service is superb and he isn't going to screw you over or try to sell you something you don't need. He will find whatever the problem is and fix it - plain and simple. Also, since Joe works alone you know that only one mechanic and expert is working on your car instead of some noob lackey that some other shops have working for them. I have a yellow VW Beetle. At one point it was the only car I had. I found a good, honest, talented specialist for my bug.... ALL VW. He helped breath life back into my car a few times. The short and sweet: Joe is a very knowledgeable and down to earth mechanic and will fix your car just the way you need it without adding on more problems to charge you more. I will be frequenting his shop if I have any more trouble with my Passat in the future! Longer version: I took my car in because it was making funny noises when it went past 25mph and then again when it passed around 45mph or so. Also the tires were misaligned and if I let the steering wheel go the car would veer to the right. When I told Joe about this he was worried that it was a transmission problem that was causing the noises, and that the misalignment was a suspension problem. Both would be very expensive to fix, and it might be better for me to sell the car if that were the case. Joe went on a test drive with me to locate the problem and concluded that the noise wasn't something to worry about at all. After his inspection he let me know that the misalignment was minor and the suspension was perfect. His fix included getting me two new tires (the misalignment had messed up the front tires pretty badly) and filling up my engine oil, which was dangerously low. The quoted price was very reasonable, and afterwards my car drove so smoothly and lightly, and the noise disappeared as well! I will be definitely returning here for any more VW problems I'll have! read more

When my 89 vanagon blew the transmission I called Joe He advised me to repair the trans rather than put in a used one. I removed the trans and took it to his shop and within a week it was done. My son was able to work on it some and get it running for a week or so, because, at 17 years old he couldn't be without it for even a short time. Joe Aleshi, owner & mechanic specialist does have an in depth knowledge of air cooled VWs. Took a '78 VW Type 2 (bus/camper) in with a starting problem and a very difficult to open side sliding door. Joe quickly diagnosed the problems and had the bus back on the road in 2 days along with alerting me about some other issues that should be taken care of, but not immediately. Takes his time to carefully explaining what has to be done. His costs are reasonable and fair compared to a VW dealership and a couple of other independent shops I have dealt with that don't always solve the problem.
