I'd say you get what you pay for here, but if you got what you paid for you'd have a much better meal and a lot less purgatory-bland fries. I came across this place on Yelp while looking for a place to go on a Saturday night without a reservation in the Wellfeet/Orleans area. We arrived at around 7:30 pm and only waited for about 30 minutes in line before placing our order. While not necessarily unique (Arnold's in Eastham has the same schtick), the "order, pay, get seated" system was refreshing, especially when you pretty much know what you want (fried seafood) before you even get there. Between two, we got the lobster roll platter ($21), the fried scallop platter ($21) and the fried calamari ($9). The fried calamari appetizer was the best of the three. I love calamari, and Moby Dick's seemed to know exactly how much to fry and bread them. However, I think it's pretty hard to mess up fried calamari; I have yet to have a bad experience. The lobster roll was very good, on par with most of the respectable seafood establishments in the area. The fried scallops were lightly breaded and fried (a positive), but I wouldn't order them again and they left no real impression on me. The main issue: I should never have to pay $20 to order fries with a side of seafood. I'm sorry; I understand seafood is expensive, but the fried scallop sandwich on the menu was $13 and I believe the lobster roll by itself was similarly priced (market price, though). That means I paid $7 for mediocre fries and mediocre coleslaw (trust me, there was at most a scallop or two more on the platter than the sandwich variety from the dish I observed in my proximity). What I learned from my experience on Moby Dick's: People on the Cape don't understand Yelp, don't really know what good food is, or are too rich to care about getting screwed on portions. read more

Perfect New England clam shack. Laid back atmosphere, friendly staff, fun dining room with picnic tables. The food was excellent. The lobster roll had huge chunks of meat with just a hint of mayo, fried clams were sweet and not greasy, and even the burgers were great! They're closing on Monday for the season but I'll be back next summer! read more

My family and I came here for the first time last night and we will definitely be coming back. The service was efficient and friendly ,starting with Todd ,the owner ,to all of the wait staff. You know it's going to be a great experience when you are standing outside in line and the owner comes out with a bucket of ice to chill your bottle of wine. Little details make a difference! This is a BYOB place so remember that if you choose to have wine or beer with your delicious meal. The nine of us sampled most of the menu from the fried oysters, raw Wellfleet oysters , lobster roll (all lobster, very little mayo, a plus in my book), the grilled scallops and shrimp, so delicious, mussels and steamer bucket , grilled swordfish, perfectly cooked and even two burgers for two of the land lovers in the group. If I could give this place NO STARS, that's what it would get. The atmosphere was fun and the young lady at the cash was exceptionally nice and that was the only nice thing about the place. The food is very poor and served on paper plates with plastic cutlery and yet they charge the same as other places. You can BYOB so I guess that's why they charge what they do for mediocre food. Went here for my nephews 3rd birthday. We had a semi large party (about 15 people give or take one or two) . We were seated in a timely manner and got our drinks promptly. Was not a long wait for the food and it was all delicious. read more

They do a very good business - we're locals, and drive by during their business hours to witness a very full parking lot, and sometimes lines going out the door. In recent times, when we've dined there, the meals have been memorably great - Fish & Chips, Lobster Rolls etc. Nice staff and very attentive service. We enjoy dining there very much. read more

Moby Dick's has the best seafood on the Cape by far. Ive had everything from grilled shrimp, mussels, steamers, fried clams amongst many other things and have never had a bad meal. Speedy and friendly service along with a cozy atmosphere make this a must stop in Wellfleet. On any given night you are likely to see the owners Todd and Mignon walking around ensuring that everything is the way it should be and always have a smile on while stopping by each table to say hello. I go to this restaurant multiple times whenever I am in Wellfleet for any length of time. It is BYOB and you place your order when you walk in the door and the food flies right out to you. I stopped here on a very hot summer day. The food was good, but the place was a little hot with the AC struggling to cool the place down due to the way the building is set up (like a clamshack with many open windows). Maybe I am just spoiled from always being in an AC, but I was dying to get cooled off while eating my food. But let me break things down like a good little yelper... First of all it is set up so that you walk in, order and pay for your food from the get go, but ultimately left me standing there awkwardly as the other people in my party knew what they had wanted... and I needed a few minutes. The two nice British girls were very nice to me once I got there, but were staring at me intently while I was trying to read the menu and make my decision , and their nice attitude turned to a " hurry up woman and make your damn decision" vibe lol. Not their fault, but it is just set up funny. Also, after you pay with credit card, and have no cash, and leave whatever cash you have in the "tip jar" out front ( you think this is all the tipping that needs to be done)you feel very bad leaving without tipping the waitresses that end up coming around and clean up your plates and ask if you need anything. It is confusing and leaves you feeling guilty if you planned on paying the bill and tip all at once using a charge card and leave the only two dollars cash you have in the tip bucket to the ladies who just take your order ! we figured noone else would be helping us since we paid up front. When we were done we booked it because we are very generous tippers and had no cash! we felt awful! As for the food, we all agreed that the clam chowder was a 7 out of 10. We only got one package of oyster crackers each (and you know you want to eat basically crackers with a side of chowder). The chicken caesar was awesome, it really hit the spot. The fish and chips were lack luster, the fish was too small of a portion. The bill was a bit steep being that we didn't order alcohol and had mainly salad,soup and fish and chips and it was around $60.00 and no gratuity. We were on our way to drop off a painting at a show down in Cape Cod, near Provincetown. We might go back eventually, if another restaurant doesn't draw us in. The gift shop was lovely and there were some lighthouse patio lights that I would like to buy.... so who knows? worth a try if you are prepared, have cash, and it isn't a very hot day. read more

The steamed clams were delish! Crab cakes were the best I've had. Broiled scallops with asparagus were a perfect addition to our already gluttonous meal. I was tipped off about this charming, roadside Mom-n-Pop by a true local when I was out here for work. I had decided to subject the Massachusetts motoring public to unnecessary peril by getting my (messy-in-a-good-way) lobster roll to-go. I ate it whilst making the tedious journey back to NYC... I arrived at Dinner Prime Time. There was a 1+ hour line to get a table - but heads-up: if you order take out, it comes up in like 4 minutes, despite the infinite line of suburbanites winding all the way into the marshy, far-off horizon.... All I had was a lobster roll, so I can't speak to the food beyond that - but I watched several fried shrimp/clams, fish n chips, salads, etc leave the kitchen, and they all looked great. The mostly college-aged employees were overworked and constantly multi-tasking, but they handled it with grace and agility. Super-fast appearance of my roll - and the cashier remembered my name, which, considering the sheer number of patrons, is remarkable... Or maybe I'm just better looking than I think. Who knows. Probably not. The only bad I could find: if you go to sit down at dinner time, you will wait, and I mean WAIT in line. But if you're on vacay on the Cape, WTF else do you have to do? Just keep in mind that the adult:kid ratio is roughly 1:2, so that sucks. Aside from that: the price. While it's not obscene for the cape (which is overpriced in general, and I get it - the cape is remote, there is high demand, etc... BUT: I can get a lobby roll that is 10% better IN Brooklyn, [read: MUCH further from the source of most lobsters,] for less than 75% of the price...! And Brooklyn overhead is WAY higher - I'm just sayin'...) For almost $20, you don't even get fries OR chips with it - just the lobster roll. I think that's wrong - there should at least be a tiny bag of pseudo-artisenal kettle chips included. That said, it was def in the top 5 lobster rolls of all time, and I'm a New Englandah, so I wicked know what the frig I'm talkin' 'bout, dude! Despite the cost- the service, food, atmosphere and view are all lovely. And the lobster roll was right-on. Perfectly toasted bun, just enough lettuce, good mix of claw/body meat, the right balance of mayo - the only minus was the excess of shredded meat, (which usually implies filler has been added. I'm not saying it WAS filler, but generally speaking...) So yeah, top 5 but not quite Número UNO. There is NO earthly reason a lobster roll should cost more than $15, all in. Most restaurants still rely on the oddly-persistent myth that lobster is extremely expensive/fancy, which I believe is a sticky residue scraped from the pipe known as "80's movies..." So, screw you, Tom Hanks! The amount of (fresh) lobster needed for one roll cost them less than $3. Add the cost of a bun, and you're basically looking at an 800% markup... But yeah, I know: "Don't hate the playah, hate the game." You will enjoy your food and time here, I'm fairly certain. And I trust my newfound local friends that on the outer-cape, this is the spot! Hugely overrated. I saw the 4stars on yelp and stopped in for dinner. We got scallops plate and fish and chips. The fish and chips fish was super greasy and they put it on top of the french fries which made the french fries soft and soggy. The scallops were OK, but came with a baked potato that seemed like it was baked a couple days ago. The potato was super dry. The plates are paper and it feels like you're eating at a picnic, but the prices are that of a restaurant, $50 for two meals and no drinks. My favorite place on cape cod! Always a long line, bring something to entertain yourself. I have been 5 times at prime dinner time (between 6-7:30) and the waits have been 45+ minutes. It is bring your own alcohol, so someone can wait in the line while someone else goes to get beers. They have benches outside for people waiting in line. When it's a really long wait and it's hot, they bring out trays of delicious watermelon! The lobster roll is fantastic! I've also had the 1 1/2 pound lobster...delish! The clam chowder is great too! My mother always gets the seafood kabobs and loves them! For dessert the key lime pie is fantastic. I cannot comment on any other of the desserts, because I have always gotten the addicting key lime pie. Moby's Cargo is a fun shop for Moby Dick's merchandise, and also Cape Cod memorabilia! read more

I personally don't understand why anyone orders fried seafood in Wellfleet, because it is as fresh as it gets, but whatever. I'm shocked that Moby Dick's only has 4 stars--this is easily some of the best seafood on the cape. There's a great range here--you can get fish and chips a blooming onion (a deep fried onion cut in such a way that it " blooms") or broiled fish with sides of steamed broccoli and corn. Fresh, succulent and relaxing. Arriving at the break of an evening summer lightning thunderstorm in their closing half hour, we were welcomed to come in and eat Many places would turn you down that close to closing. The inside reminded us of a indoor picnic area,, very simple and quaint. We ordered scallops and a lobster roll. The scallops A++++were oozing with flavor and prepared to perfection- soo succulent and generously portioned. The lobster roll was fresh and mixed with the right amount of dressing to keep the flavor of the lobster. Can't beat it if you have a family with kids and line is short. Kind of strange ordering a hundred dollar meal at a counter, find your table then they bring it out to you but it was actually pretty quick service and thats what you need with a bunch of kids. Kids fish and chips was like an adult meal at lots of places. Enough for me to poach plenty off their plates as is my right! My teenage son was tired of seafood so got a really nice looking burger that he enjoyed. Wife got a fish sandwich - fine not incredible but again plenty of fish. All in all a very good meal, excellent surroundings, lots of stuff for family to look at and neat gift shop next door. It's a winner. read more

I am not one to write a bad review, but I became violently ill after eating fried clams at this place and I am incredibly disappointed with the way the manager handled this information. He absolutely refused to accept responsibility for my sickness and told me that it must have been something else that I had eaten (this is the only thing I had that was different from the group I was with all day) or that I was allergic to seafood (I've grown up on Cape Cod my whole life and have never been sick from seafood before). There's a reason they call it Moby DICK'S because this man was just that... at the end of our conversation he gave me a half-hearted "I'm sorry if you think you got sick here." I am only writing this review because of my hostile conversation with the manager and his utter and complete rudeness. If you get sick from eating their food, don't bother calling to alert them... they'll just end up blaming their mistake on you. What a complete disappointment. read more

I think we just had the perfect Cape Cod meal! From start to finish, the food, service and ambiance were top notch. We were telling the owner how great his place and staff were and he then graciously comped our desserts....that I would have happily paid for because they were excellent. We have been here a few times over the years and I want to say it's special but I just can't come around to a full throated recommendation here. First off, it's on the side of the road on the main road to Provincetown so it's not much of a scenic stop, but it does have the look of somewhere that should be special. It's BYOB which is unique to the area so that could be why there's always a line. The outdoor seating options put you essentially in the parking lot and unfortunately this year in particular they are overrun by mosquitoes making it hard to stay out in the evening. The food was generally good although I'd classify their chowder as too thin. Some of our food came out undercooked which was taken care of right away. The service of the staff is really good and they show care for their customers. If you go here I don't think you'll be upset but I don't know that you'll rave about it to your friends. read more

Moby Dick's is the best place I've been to on the Cape for seafood. Not only is the seafood fantastic, but they serve you will silverware and real plates! Not so at other seafood establishments on the Cape. In addition, Moby Dick's servers bring the food to your table and will get you additional menu items or replacement items such as butter or silverware upon request. I'd also like to add that Moby Dick's also provides diners with a real, metal lobster cracker, not a cheap plastic one. Other Cape Cod seafood eateries might have a less refined dining experience but charge the SAME PRICES! For example, my parents and I visited a highly-rated Yelp establishment with tons of positive reviews, but we all agreed it was the worst meal of our Cape visit. Everything was self-serve: you pick up food and bus your own tables, our food was served on paper plates and we had to fetch our plastic utensils--this after waiting in line for an hour and waiting another hour for our food. Moby Dick's has a staff person checking the line and the number of people in groups. Also, my $23 lobster roll was dinky--not much more lobster meat than the hot dog bun it was served on! AGAIN, the prices were identical to Moby Dick's. I could understand if the prices were lower,, but they were not. I"ll vote with my wallet. read more

The food is amazing, no arguing that. The grilled shrimp and scallops skewers were succulent and the seafood gumbo was hearty and delicious. With that being said there are some minor flaws. One, despite many of these reviews, the prices aren't cheap. For example my shrimp and scallop plate was $25 and a 1 1/2 pound lobster clambake was $34, not outrageous but certainly not cheap. Also, unless you arrive at about 5:30 or earlier, you are stuck on a line usually about 45 mins to an hour. This isn't MD's fault but is not pleasant. In addition, there is no air conditioning in the dining rooms and are usually quite hot. Overall, if you are on the cape, it is definitely worth a trip to Moby's if you want a great seafood meal. read more

I have visited Moby's at least a dozen times over multiple summers...dine-in and take out...lunches and dinners. Always excellent. Moby's is what Moby's is. No white tablecloths. No 10,000 bottle wine cellar. No pretenses. Really, really good beachy seafood served by a cheerful and attentive staff in a clean and active environment. Sometimes you have to wait outside for a table. Who cares?! That's part of the fun...plus, it ups the anticipation of the great food inside. Have the lobster roll or the boiled lobster dinner or any of the fried platters. I favor the whole belly clam roll and raw oysters. Take a moment to appreciate the way the staff works as a team. This is no accident. The owners are on site watching, coaching, and encouraging their workers to keep the customers happy and the food coming out promptly. Go to Moby's. Get the t-shirt. Food was excellent. Environment was not my cup of tea. My mom and dad went and hated it. My bf and I decided to give it a shot, we didn't like it either. Here's why. When u get there you get in line outside, with all these people who brought coolers of booze. You are given a menu and u have to pick while u wait 20-45 min average wait. Then u get inside, order at the front and pay, then they seat u and bring the food. The food was good but the experience wasn't so enjoyable. Also, the weird ordering arrangement wasn't very conducive to tipping, we forgot to tip altogether which I have NEVER done. And I hated that the bathrooms were singles, and instead of men's & women's, they were labeled either and or. I had to pee but was afraid to walk in on a dude or something.
