First of all, I love this place as its connected with Phoenicia and offers free covered parking in Downtown!! Secondly, its such a cool bar with great music and yummy drinks and food!! :) My roommate and I went here last Friday for Houston Restaurant Week dinner. Its $25 for a 3 course dinner and it worth every single penny!! :) Between us, we got the beet and goat cheese terrine (I'm not a fan of beets, but loved this), MKT salad (really tasty), curried vegetable pot pie (amazing and so glad finally someone decided to make a vegetarian pot pie), and the veg out pizza (brussels sprouts and asparagus on a pizza?? Hell yeah!!). The portions were really big and we were stuffed by the end of this, but there was still dessert to come. That's when I thanked the heavens that I was wearing a dress and not a waist-clinching pant!! Hehe ;) The dark knight which was a coffee creme brulee was unbelievably delicious and the apple baklava with a scoop of vanilla ice cream was right on par with the dark knight. I don't know under what kind of rock I was leaving all these years, but I have only found out about this fantastic thing called "Steak Night" only a few weeks ago!! But where my steak loving mind was in cloud 9, my whack work schedule was keeping me from discovering what Houston had to offer. The solution came in the form of MKT Bar. It's 10 mins walk from my downtown office and I can literally take a coffee break and pick up my steak from there!! Steak night menu is fantastic but my favorite is the Za'atar sauce that comes with the fry!! That sauce is love! Absolutely fantastic- it's a herb-olive oil concoction that goes perfectly with the steak! Because of this sauce, steak doesn't feel too heavy or fatty. Other one that I really recommend is their salad dressing, it's a lemon vinegar dressing that literally bring life to the salad. It's funny how the things I most love are two sauce and dressing but what can I say I fell in love for that! read more

Someone advertised this was the best brunch place in town but I think I've had better. Don't get me wrong. It is a good place but not the best. Egg Scramble $8 - I was actually impressed with how delicious this simple dish turned out to be. The eggs were fluffy and moist; not overcooked. Seasoned perfectly. Match made in heaven when combined with their house queso. The roasted potatoes was an added bonus to a hungry belly. You can be a tad bit fancy by paying $2 more for some sausages. Most budget friendly entree for brunch that should fill you up. (8/10) Fried Chicken & Waffles $13 - The name is self explanatory. The fried chicken was moist and seasoned a bit differently. It was crusted with bacon bits and breaded accordingly. It came with Moroccan-spiced maple syrup on the side. I wasn't too crazy about the waffles. It tasted a bit too cakey for my preference. (6/10) Service was great. The waitress came to our table a few times to check to see if we needed anything and to refill our drinks. She didn't try to bombard us with taking care of the bill even though we were done with our food. Casual. Quick. Quirky. Clean. I was in Houston for a conference and needed a place to unwind and grab a tasty, filling bite with a co-worker. We stumbled into Phoenicia foods and found this delightfully fun and tasty bar tucked in the corner. There was a DJ playing everything from Bruno Mars to Madonna and TLC. All mixed well and loud enough to make you Dane in your seat, but still be able to chat. Which is key in a restaurant/bar setting. We had the plantain chips and mango salsa and a half off bottle of Malbec to start. The chips weren't amazing but the mango salasa was great so it evened out. I ordered the curry pot pie (only vegetarian option that seemed filling enough for my starvation). My colleague ordered the Halibut in Parchment and she was very very happy with her choice! I'd say go here. Go with friends. Go with co-workers. Go alone. It seems like good food and a good atmosphere. What more could you want?! read more

I really wasn't sure what to expect fat MKT Bar because the first time I went here was by mistake when I went to check out the new Phoenicia. I just heard a band playing and saw there was a private party of some sort - Looked like some sort of High School Prom/Graduation party of some sort, but then I'm an old man now so college kids look like High Schoolers to me. Anyway, I mention this because if you enter from the Austin Street entrance, you really can't tell that this is a separate bar/restaurant and it kind of looks like a coffee shop or somewhere like Central Market where you grab a ready to eat food from the store and eat it during your lunch hour (which it very well may be). The problem at night is when there is a party of some sort, they block the entrance to the bar it self so someone not familiar with the bar won't even know it's there. Parking is also weird. There is a parking lot for Phoenicia but every other spot says no parking which is also confusing and not helpful. As far as the bar itself, it's nice...the ceiling is a bit low and it feels cramped but it's got a lot of charm too and I have to say, the food is very good. I don't mean it's good for a bar, I mean it's very good food. Overall, you should check it out. read more

I went to MKT BAR about a month ago for a friend's birthday dinner. I had no idea this place even existed. First point they scored with me is for the free garage parking since it is part of Phoenicia. I had a hard time finding the entrance into the garage, but I'm glad I found it, so I didn't have to pay at a meter or private lot. We had dinner and drinks on a Friday night. It wasn't terribly crowded, however it was somewhat early (8pm or so). Our server was extremely nice, however there was a little mishap with splitting up the checks at the end of the night. I had Riesling and an order of the MKT sliders. The sliders were pretty good, but not as good as the pizza. I wish there had been a little something added to the sliders. It was pulled lamb and cabbage. They also had a DJ there, and to be honest, she wasn't that good! I hate to say it, but her transitioning from song to song was a little rough. But overall, I enjoyed the ambiance. I would like to come back during happy hour because I feel like this is a great place to meet up after work with friends. read more

I've been stopping through here now for quite some time living so close to it over in the East End. I always love seeing the mix of performers they have through this place, but more importantly is the bar itself. Good mix of beers on tap, absolutely no domestics which is great to see. Always good to separate oneself from the bud light drinkers. Drink prices are always pretty reasonable too for the beer and wines they've got! MKT Bar is also a great spot to stop and grab a bite to eat if you're near the GRB convention center or Discover green. I would highly recommend the za' atar dusted fries which will leave you in an utter state of sadness once you eat them all uncontrollably. That's never a problem though either as you can then round your visit out with a really nice selection of different gelatos. read more

Came for brunch after going to an event at the George R. Brown. Ordered the chicken and waffles which were very good. No hard liquor, but plenty of good wines and beers to choose from. Also, if there's something you can't find, the attached grocery store, Phoenicia, probably has it if you feel like hoofing it a few aisles. I like the laid back feel of the place and was happy to see a flyer for their nightly goings ons. I'll have to come back and try out their happy hour or various music events. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt with four stars but we had some pretty bad service. Waitress was either brand new or out to lunch. Ladies at the table ordered a chardonnay, she brought back red and said that it was definitely the chardonnay. After some friendly arguing on wine she came back with the right wine but an extra glass. My dad ordered a bottle of sparkling water which she forgot to bring back three or four times even though he kept asking for it. The manager finally brought it over with an apology. She seemed to be the only one working the floor, although it was a floor of four tables. I'm hoping next time to have better luck on that end and continued good food and wine. read more

Came here this past weekend on the way back from Discovery Green. The parking is easy and free inside the garage. As far as the food, we ordered the meat and cheese place which was nicely presented. Many walking by were staring at the dish but overall it was just ok. My dining companion ordered the squash pizza with blue cheese. I wouldn't recommend this unless you LOVE blue cheese, because that's all you will taste when you take a bite. Decent beer selection, which you might expect from a Mediterranean grocery store bar. The waiter poured it into the pint glass for me which was a nice touch. He sorta disappeared after the food came out, so we waited a little bit longer than necessary for the check. They have a happy hour weekly with live music on certain nights which could be fun to check out so i might be back for that one day. If you can't find anything you like on the menu just go to the hot deli, order a shwarma, pay for it at register and take it back to the tables. read more

We came on a Thursday evening for some drinks and some food before an Astros game. Spot on, perfect. It was happy hour so our Weedwackers were super cheap. we shared a pizza (Ham Solo) that our waiter recommended. So so so good. We skipped on the fresh jalapeños though cause yikes but the pizza was just so flavorful without all the greasy normal pizza-ness. The garlic, prosciutto, Canadian bacon and pineapples. Mmm I looked on Yelp for good places to be at on Thursdays and MKT bar came up because of their happy hour. We didn't get it because we weren't too hungry but it looked yum. I went here prior to a show at The Hobby Center, even with us being slightly short on time. The service was quick and great. We didn't have a hostess greet us, so we weren't sure how it all worked. It's serl-seating and I'm guessing someone will spot you and start serving you. We ordered the Bayou City Sliders and Hill Country Sliders. Enjoyed both, but I liked the Bayou City more. Sliders can be hard if not cooked correctly. This one was juicy and the bun was soft and amazing. As for drinks, our water stayed filled and my raspberry mojito was ok. I had issues with the raspberry bits getting caught in my straw. We saw two ladies come with to-go boxes and sit a a table that was marked reserved with two glasses of water waiting. It seemed like you can reserve and order food ahead of time, but not sure about that. read more

Chic, chill, clean. We came here to grab a quick bite before an event at the Toyota center. connected to Phoenica Market, MKT gives off a modern vibe. The food: quality ingredients with healthy options. We ordered the Austin burger and the Kale salad, both of which were pretty well made. The Kale salad was a bit on the dry salad, but I attribute that to the fact that I requested dressing to be on the side. Service is mediocre. We were seated right away, and our waiter came around to take our order right away. However, our food took forever to come out. Some pros: convenient location, with good happy hour deals (Saturday night- $10 pints with giant pretzel), modern/clean interior. Con: difficult parking. Our problem was due to our large party of almost 30 people - we were split into two long tables and had requested that we have our own server to avoid potential confusion. This request was not granted and our fears came true. Several items came late (10 - 30 minutes), drink orders were bungled, and we ran out of utensils/dishes. This was due to the popularity of the Tuesday / Thursday steak night, which was a moderate sized (7 oz) rib-eye with a side. Live music and $14 steak dinner was absolutely perfect for a ladies' night out on a Thursday! We were originally going to eat at Phoenicia market, but we walked in here and loved the ambience. They have happy hour from 4-6pm for drinks and appetizers. We ordered some sparkling wine $5 and queso with baked pita chips for $5 to start off our night. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, they have a special steak dinner for $14! It comes with salad, steak, fried onions, and another side (mashed potatoes, fries, or broccoli). The portions were pretty generous for the price! I was already full from the queso/chips and my salad that I wasn't able to finish the steak. Around 7pm, they had live music! They had schedule of events for each night on the chalkboard. They also have the schedule on the website! The music wasn't too loud, so we were still able to hear each other in our conversations. Since it is attached to Phoeniciar market, it was nice to pick up a few things at the market on our way out. Also, free parking was another plus! read more

Finally got a chance to check out this little eatery tucked inside the Phoenicia grocery store on Westheimer. There is a multi-level garage attached to the market, which cuts out the hassle of having to find street parking downtown. The seating is first-come-first-serve, and we had to settle for a table off to the side because apparently the place fills up pretty quickly when they have live music. The ambiance was low-key and slightly dim, with tables full of canoodling couples or colleagues grabbing post-work beers. My friend and I went with the Thursday night steak special, which gets you a 7 oz steak, a salad, and a potato-based side for $12.99. Not a bad deal. We ended up getting food insecurity and ordering a queso as well, which may have been overkill. The savory queso was surprisingly good though and very unique, with sweet pita chips and 2 cheeses I've never heard of. The steak was thin but cooked well, with a nice chimichurri sauce to give it an acidic kick. The twice-baked potato side was soft and buttery. Overall the food was above average, albeit not very memorable, and the venue was an interesting change of pace. 4/5 stars from me. read more

We had a party of 6 this past Friday evening, our server was Kelly. We ordered a ton of food, drinks, etc. and I didn't like the pizza I ordered , so I sent it back. After that, she aced like we didn't exist. I had to go to the bar to get our checks, then again to get the cards rung up. My husband paid and I don't normally look at the bill when he does. I didn't notice prior but when we were leaving, I saw she charged us for the pizza we sent back. I heard what my husband said when explaining to her we didn't like it and he was trying to be nice in saying don't worry about it, it's not a big deal. I guess she took that differently. Ordered steak special. Salad simple but fresh and well-done; good greens, shredded cheese, Kalamata, etc. I order my steaks rare because I like them medium rare, and they come out over-done more often than not, but this one actually came out as ordered, even on special. Mega bravo. For $13 downtown with side and salad you're by no means getting filet mignon - I yanked some gristle once or twice - but if I wanted a $30 entree steak I would have spent $30+; this is a good deal. Onion rings and fries on the steak special are thin but not over-breaded/fried -- I usually leave thin-cut fried sides on my plate, but not here. I just stopped by for happy hour and was VERY pleasantly pleased with the DJ Dave Wrangler spinning together current bar-lounge vocal anthems with classics. Much better than I expected for a Tuesday. I would come back for the food OR the music, to say nothing of the combination. I constantly feel like I'm falling backwards off the bar stools (even sober), but meh, 0 stars off for that. A tad expensive for Houston, but the food, drink, music, atmosphere, and location are great. I'll be back. read more

This is connected to the Phoenicia grocery store and my group had just finished a meeting across the street. It was okay and the service was good, but I can't really recommend it. They seem to be marketing themselves as a trendy, healthy restaurant. It does have a good ambiance and it was a pleasant place to hang out in with a group. But, Local Foods executes the concept much better in terms of the food. My chicken kale salad was 13 dollars and was pretty puny. The chicken was weird. I have seen this style chicken elsewhere and do no like - too stiff and rubbery. The kale was so so. It left a lot to be desired. I wished I was eating an Alonte salad, local food salad, salata or an HEB Orange Plate. Seriously, those are good. Anyhow, as an FYI, you can't bring in adult beverages or food from Phoenicia which kind of sucks since this is part of the grocery store. But, they are separate businesses I think so that's understandable. They did have a dessert wind called Meadery of Rockies' Apricots and Honey which was the best thing I've drank in ages. So, that was good. I will locate that at a grocery store near me and buy it, but I appreciate the find. So, this will be a future pass for me. But, if I lived downtown I would give it another shot. I do think that this is a good addition to the walkable downtown living initiative and it would be fine to just meet up for a drink or event. But, there are much better options for a big, healthy salad. read more

I brought my 10 year old. Wha?!? It has "bar" in the name! I know, right? But i asked around before I went, read a review that said "family friendly" and decided to go for it. He loved it - and so did I! The live acoustic music added to the European feel - maybe because he was changing familiar songs to minor keys and putting his own signature on them. I don't know, but my 10 year old loved it. There's a grocery store attached (hence the name), that makes you think they're grabbing fresh ingredients and putting them on your plate. It all contributes to a great ambience. I had a local beer that was awesome. My kid had a ginger ale (heavy on the ginger) which was a little too much for his Sprite or Sierra Mist taste buds, but which I really liked. We shared the chips and queso. They have an Italian flare that almost go down like pizza. Tues and Thurs are steak night, so we had the steak! It was delicious and didn't break the bank. Most importantly, my 10 year old loved it. Similar to a Cracker Barrel, in the way a store is connected to the eatery. The waiter handed us nine more straws than we needed. Giant wall that blocks the view of the stage from most of the large tables, and it reminds me of the divide in our country. BUT we received a free drink and the wait staff did an amazing job, even if he was nervous and messed up the tickets multiple times. I work across the street, so, I've heard about this place, and seen it when I go to Phoenicias. I gotta say I expected more. The place is small, crowded, loud, and overpriced.. I've been twice, and the staff is not great, neither is the food. The drinks are fine, and the wine... the wine is expensive, and cheap. I really did expect a lot more from this place. The only thing I can truly recommend is, every time the Astros play at home, they make frito pie... and if you're ever feeling frisky, you should try it. It's pretty good. read more
