I'm a big fan of Phoenicia Specialty Foods so I thought I would like MKT Bar, but it doesn't live up to its market next door. To start, service is pretty slow. I have been 3 times and 2 out of the 3 was like pulling teeth to get service. The best luck I had was when I sat at the bar. But that only worked the first time, not the second time. Then when I sat at the table, it was actually horrible. I had to wave down the waiter nonstop. He never came to our table without me waving him down. Food was okay. Nothing special. Queso was probably the best thing we had. Do not waste your money on the fish and chips. There is basically no fish inside of the breading. I thought I liked the salmon spinach salad, but it made me sick after I ate it. The atmosphere is pretty fun, it is loud and lively. So maybe just a good spot to go for drinks if you're not in a hurry. I did like their wine and beer selection. read more

This is right next to/attached to Phoenicia Specialty Foods, and definitely worth a visit. There's a special for each day, and even a $20 "steak night" on Thursday! My friend and I went on a Sunday for brunch and had a great time. We sat at the bar and were helped relatively quickly. We shared the 3 point meze dippers-- our favorite was the red pepper walnut dip although all of it was delicious. It is served with both plantain chips and pita chips. For my main, I had the curried vegetable pot pie (with baked chicken added). The spices were really well blended and the crust was crispy and just delicious! We were looking for food somewhere in the vicinity of Toyota Center before an event. My mother in law mentioned a log while back meeting her sister at Phoenicia for lunch, and since we parked near by, figured we'd pop in and try it out. We walked in on the grocery side so we were kinda like ehhhhh, maybe not. But once we turned the corner all apprehension went poof. The waitress told us to seat ourselves and was prompt bringing menus to us and getting our drink order. She was super helpful on recommendations and any tweaks (more on that later). While we waited on food and drinks, love that there is local art all over the walls. Very fun pieces to look at! (Most looked to be Diane Gelman - and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested in a few of her pieces). Anyways, on to the food! We got the meat and cheese platter, he got the pot pie, I got the halumi and tomato salad with added parm salmon. Our waitress recommended the lemon vinaigrette - I got some on the side and went with the sherry vinaigrette it comes with on it, but it was such a great addition. I absolutely loved my dish. Meat and cheese platter was great, hubs said the pot pie was very good as well. Portions were good sized - no complaints. Y'all, I remembered the photo this time, albeit half eaten. Price wasn't bad at all - for an app, a soda, two drinks, and two entrees with some added cost - with tax and tip we were still under $100. MKT Bar is kinda Phoenicia, kinda not based upon its location. It's a bar with tasty food on the side. I think we threw off the waitress/bar tender because we didn't want alcohol and thought we had to order directly at the bar. Inside it's nice. I think the food took a little bit too long to get ready, which worried me, since I was visiting this place to avoid eating at the hotel restaurants for a conference I was at. I remember I had visited this place once years ago and just remembered them being very speedy. That is no longer true. They are not slow like molasses, but slow enough that you might feel slightly stressed if on a time crunch. They had a simple menu and I ordered Dr. Pepper and their fish and chips. They were really offended when I asked for tarter sauce as they only had some aioli sauce. I mean it was fine, but in my head fish and chips goes with tarter sauce. The fish and chips were good. Maybe not the best fish and chips of all time, but pretty darn good. Aside from the time it took for the food to cook, like they never really refilled our drinks. I got the impression had I ordered beer maybe the bartender would have been slightly more interested in us. That's just my perception. The service is friendly, although a bit slow at times. The food options offer lite bites but also some choices for an entire meal, the prices are reasonable. This is attached to Phoenicia so it's the perfect spot to sit down, have some food, and check out the international items that Phoenicia has to offer before or after. Dishes are a mix of American and Mediterranean cuisine. Got the zataar fries, sweet potato fries and the Mediterranean chicken skewers. Fries were addicting and the garlic aoli paired perfectly with it. They messed up on bringing a side of Brussel sprouts that we requested bringing it towards the end of the meal after we reminded them of it. And on top of that it wasn't covered in bacon and cheese which it didn't have. It's a decent spot but I'd say go for drinks rather than food. read more

If an employee named Jordan answers the phone, please ask to speak with someone else. Jordan is unaware that when you place an order online, your location is requested, which gives you the impression that the order will be brought to your car. When I indicated this to Jordan she had an issue. She is unaware of how the system works and was unwilling to take a look at the screenshot that I took to share with her. When I entered when I entered to pick up my food, Jordan was talking with friends and refused to hand me my food. She tried to pretend that I was rude to her. I was not at all rude, but went immediately into teacher mode to help her understand something she was unaware of. MKT Bar is never the first place that pops into my mind when I'm looking for breakfast/brunch, but honestly it should - it boasts a vast menu, opens earlier than other morning eateries in Downtown, offers free garage parking, and is conveniently attached to Phoenicia, the Mediterranean/international supermarket at which I aspire to do all my grocery shopping. I recently went back to MKT last weekend for brunch prior to a matinée at the Downtown AMC - here are my thoughts on what we tried: Hill-Country Chicken & Waffle - It's your standard chicken and waffle, played straight. The waffle is crisp and tasty, though I felt the chicken was a bit dry/boring. Next time I'd probably choose one of the other more exciting menu options. Baklava Pancakes - I am definitely not a pancake person, yet I really loved these! They remind me of the thin German pancakes that I used to get at IHOP: thicker and bouncier than a crêpe, but much slimmer than a traditional buttermilk. They're layered with crushed pistachios, freshly sliced figs, and a floral orange blossom honey...so good! Choco-Halva Latte - This espresso drink caught my eye when I was looking for a fun caffeinated pick-me-up. The waiter assured me it wouldn't be too sweet and he was thankfully correct - think of a rich, dark mocha with nutty, toasted undertones. This was great paired with the sweet pancakes! Service was speedy and very cordial - we were in-and-out in 45 minutes and had some spare time to peruse the supermarket prior to our showtime. So I really like Mkt Bar. Everything is fresh, they use quality ingredients. From time to time I come on my lunch break. Generally will sit at the bar to expedite service as I don't have long to order and eat. Staff is accommodating and nice. However, I do feel they are understaffed. The clientele that comes here wants interaction not just order taking so that pulls the staff from attending to other guest. I'm a low maintenance guest that doesn't really need much conversation if I'm there for lunch but I need to get in and out. Today I ordered the fish and chips. I did ask the bartender which to choose between the chicken skewers or fish. Sometimes I just don't want to decide I like to hear other suggestions outside my own gut. The fish was cooked perfectly and was accompanied with an aioli, Zataar fries, and coleslaw. I requested hot sauce and the bartender ensured I had it before my food was there. That was a nice touch. My fries were cold though which she immediately communicated it to be fixed. I appreciated the effort and them making it right. Although I would have like to enjoy my entire dish I paid full price for and tipped together not separate. Management take the opportunity to be accountable and give a discount for the inconvenience next time there is a kitchen hiccup. read more

We were a big group who were headed to see Christmas lights around Downtown. Live music was playing during brunch. It's too loud and you can't have a conversation. I wish they had more items on the breakfast menu. I approached the grocery store side but they weren't serving breakfast any more in the cafeteria-type setting. So I opted for an egg white spinach fritatta in the Mkt Bar. It's a big serving and I don't like to waste. But I could only eat half. So I recommend diners share the fritatta. The waiter brought Tabasco and Cholula sauces. I added a bit of cholula to give it more flavor. The egg dish doesn't have much flavor. While the ambiance is lively, I wouldn't go back since I can't have a conversation due to the loud live music played during brunch. read more

The steak was great, and big enough you might be able to take some leftovers home. The potato is heavenly smooth and fluffy. We were here a year ago, and the food was decent, this is our second time here, but there is a noticeable decline in the quality of food. The fish and chips was at best mediocre. They use cod, which I appreciate as that is traditionally what you use for fish and chips, however, the texture of the fish was not flaky as it should be but quite mushy. The chips were soggy bland french fries. The coleslaw was also bland and the cabbage used in it should've probably been thrown out. It was not fresh and crisp, but soggy and limp, as if it was old and should've been discarded, but used in coleslaw to save them a buck. I would not recommend if that has become their standard. My wife ordered the same pizza that she ordered last time, and again there was a dramatic difference in quality, not for the better. The ingredients were anything but fresh, the prosciutto was leathery and had a yellowish tinge to it. Again, I would not recommend, I doubt that we will be back for food. It's always disappointing to see a place that was decent, lower their standards, although the prices did go up. I cannot justify paying more for lower quality. read more

We sat over to the side so we were able to visit and hear each other. They were busy but the service was great. We had a super positive experience here about a month ago! Dasha was our server and she was so awesome! She really was on top of it considering we were a big group and it was super busy for Sunday funday! The ambience is so great here! Loved the love string quartet. We came on steak night to give this place a try. You get a 10 oz. ribeye on bed of fried onions topped with chimichurri with choice of steamed broccoli or twice-baked potato, & side salad. The salad that come before it huge and you do get a good amount of food for $16.99. The only complaint I had was the steak was not cooked correctly we asked for medium rare and they did come out medium but other than that everything was good. The ceviche was awesome, and we loved the pita chips it came with. The place is very cute and I love that they do live music on Thursdays. The band they had was great. Our server was good and nice but I think they could have more servers working they were busy so the service was a little slow. I don't blame the server she was really doing her best. I like the food here mostly. Ordering the pizzas which taste no different than what you can get at an Italian mom&pop, but also the classic Mediterranean items that may be pre-made from the prepared food section or kitchen from the market. Everything taste fresh as you would expect from a restaurant. Their falafel wraps have a heavy tahini paste and taste. It is open seating with some shared seating long tables. There is also seating at the bar. We had plenty of choices. We started with a carafe of pomegranate mimosas & other fountain drinks. The mimosas were very good. We also ordered 2 regular coffees that weren't delivered at the same time or with cream. I only tasted the New Day Galette. I enjoyed it but felt like it lacked sauce for the breading. We also had scrambled eggs rather than fried. My husband loved his chicken. My boys also enjoyed their meals & licked their plates clean. Food in the time of Corona... MKT Bar is open for curbside pickup (pickup is along McKinney Street) and delivery through Postmates and Uber Eats. I did their curbside pickup on Saturday for #YelpsBigNightIn. I took advantage of their $25 pizza + bottle of wine. (They also have a $22 pizza + local craft brew six pack). I ordered the "Veg Out" pizza that came topped with fried brussels sprouts, roasted yellow squash, zucchini, carrots, artichoke, asparagus and drizzled with a basil pesto and goat cheese. This was so bomb. It was a lovely medley of roasted veggies atop house made bread. Friends, I ate almost the entire thing. (Hey, I did my workout!)
