I'm a big fan of Phoenicia Specialty Foods so I thought I would like MKT Bar, but it doesn't live up to its market next door. To start, service is pretty slow. I have been 3 times and 2 out of the 3 was like pulling teeth to get service. The best luck I had was when I sat at the bar. But that only worked the first time, not the second time. Then when I sat at the table, it was actually horrible. I had to wave down the waiter nonstop. He never came to our table without me waving him down. Food was okay. Nothing special. Queso was probably the best thing we had. Do not waste your money on the fish and chips. There is basically no fish inside of the breading. I thought I liked the salmon spinach salad, but it made me sick after I ate it. The atmosphere is pretty fun, it is loud and lively. So maybe just a good spot to go for drinks if you're not in a hurry. I did like their wine and beer selection.
We were looking for food somewhere in the vicinity of Toyota Center before an event. My mother in law mentioned a log while back meeting her sister at Phoenicia for lunch, and since we parked near by, figured we'd pop in and try it out. We walked in on the grocery side so we were kinda like ehhhhh, maybe not. But once we turned the corner all apprehension went poof. The waitress told us to seat ourselves and was prompt bringing menus to us and getting our drink order. She was super helpful on recommendations and any tweaks (more on that later). While we waited on food and drinks, love that there is local art all over the walls. Very fun pieces to look at! (Most looked to be Diane Gelman - and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested in a few of her pieces). Anyways, on to the food! We got the meat and cheese platter, he got the pot pie, I got the halumi and tomato salad with added parm salmon. Our waitress recommended the lemon vinaigrette - I got some on the side and went with the sherry vinaigrette it comes with on it, but it was such a great addition. I absolutely loved my dish. Meat and cheese platter was great, hubs said the pot pie was very good as well. Portions were good sized - no complaints. Y'all, I remembered the photo this time, albeit half eaten. Price wasn't bad at all - for an app, a soda, two drinks, and two entrees with some added cost - with tax and tip we were still under $100. Definitely bookmarking MKT bar for next time we have something to go to in the area!
We stopped by MKT bar after going to a nearby festival where the food was meh and it was just what we needed! The waffles were great and the syrup and cardamom whipped cream were so delicious. My husband got a side of bacon and we both loved it. Our waitress was so fun and sweet and when we were done we enjoyed exploring the market, which is a pretty impressive size for the location btw!
The service is friendly, although a bit slow at times. The food options offer lite bites but also some choices for an entire meal, the prices are reasonable. This is attached to Phoenicia so it's the perfect spot to sit down, have some food, and check out the international items that Phoenicia has to offer before or after. There is street parking and Phoenicia also offers garage parking although that can feel a bit tight.
MKT bar offers a more upscale restaurant experience compared to its neighboring phonecia's hot bars. Since they're typically a bar, service is definitely on the slower side for food. Dishes are a mix of American and Mediterranean cuisine. Got the zataar fries, sweet potato fries and the Mediterranean chicken skewers. Fries were addicting and the garlic aoli paired perfectly with it. They messed up on bringing a side of Brussel sprouts that we requested bringing it towards the end of the meal after we reminded them of it. And on top of that it wasn't covered in bacon and cheese which it didn't have. It's a decent spot but I'd say go for drinks rather than food.
How things have changed since that visit. I've been to MKT bar many times in the past two years, but today's experience was enough to make me change my mind. If an employee named Jordan answers the phone, please ask to speak with someone else. Jordan is unaware that when you place an order online, your location is requested, which gives you the impression that the order will be brought to your car. When I indicated this to Jordan she had an issue. She is unaware of how the system works and was unwilling to take a look at the screenshot that I took to share with her. When I entered when I entered to pick up my food, Jordan was talking with friends and refused to hand me my food. She tried to pretend that I was rude to her. I was not at all rude, but went immediately into teacher mode to help her understand something she was unaware of. Who knows how long my food was waiting, but it was worth it to educate Jordan. *Jordan did not introduce herself. My apologies if I misspelled her name.
Great every time we go and everything we get is awesome. Five stars for George as well. No one makes you feel more at home and glad to see you come in than him. Brunch, steak night, happy hour, they do it all. Live music at brunch to boot. All this and attached to a world class market! This is a must do!
MKT Bar is never the first place that pops into my mind when I'm looking for breakfast/brunch, but honestly it should - it boasts a vast menu, opens earlier than other morning eateries in Downtown, offers free garage parking, and is conveniently attached to Phoenicia, the Mediterranean/international supermarket at which I aspire to do all my grocery shopping. I recently went back to MKT last weekend for brunch prior to a matinée at the Downtown AMC - here are my thoughts on what we tried: Hill-Country Chicken & Waffle - It's your standard chicken and waffle, played straight. The waffle is crisp and tasty, though I felt the chicken was a bit dry/boring. Next time I'd probably choose one of the other more exciting menu options. Baklava Pancakes - I am definitely not a pancake person, yet I really loved these! They remind me of the thin German pancakes that I used to get at IHOP: thicker and bouncier than a crêpe, but much slimmer than a traditional buttermilk. They're layered with crushed pistachios, freshly sliced figs, and a floral orange blossom honey...so good! Choco-Halva Latte - This espresso drink caught my eye when I was looking for a fun caffeinated pick-me-up. The waiter assured me it wouldn't be too sweet and he was thankfully correct - think of a rich, dark mocha with nutty, toasted undertones. This was great paired with the sweet pancakes! Service was speedy and very cordial - we were in-and-out in 45 minutes and had some spare time to peruse the supermarket prior to our showtime. I'll be back soon to eat my way through the rest of the menu!
Went here for a team lunch and had a decent time. We can early so there wasn't a wait or it wasn't packed. The ambiance was pretty cool. There is a stage area with a piano, I'm sure there lots of open mic nights or some sort of entertainment that happens at this bar. We ordered pizza and fries and everything was pretty good. Nothing really stood out to me but it was tasty and I would go back again
We came on a very busy day but left very happy overall. Steak night was well worth it. We will definitely be back.
Surprisingly good prices and food options. I split the tangy wings (which were large), the cauliflower bites (looked tiny but tasted amazing), and the MKT salad for two of us and it was under $50. We also got gelato afterward and their flavors were delicious. Great spot before catching a Rockets game or concert at Toyota Center!
We were a big group who were headed to see Christmas lights around Downtown. Live music was playing during brunch. It's too loud and you can't have a conversation. I wish they had more items on the breakfast menu. I approached the grocery store side but they weren't serving breakfast any more in the cafeteria-type setting. So I opted for an egg white spinach fritatta in the Mkt Bar. It's a big serving and I don't like to waste. But I could only eat half. So I recommend diners share the fritatta. The waiter brought Tabasco and Cholula sauces. I added a bit of cholula to give it more flavor. The egg dish doesn't have much flavor. While the ambiance is lively, I wouldn't go back since I can't have a conversation due to the loud live music played during brunch.
We hoped on a quick trip on the RYDE to MKT Bar. We were surprised to find out it's in a grocery store. Definitely allow time to look through it. It is open seating with some shared seating long tables. There is also seating at the bar. We had plenty of choices. We started with a carafe of pomegranate mimosas & other fountain drinks. The mimosas were very good. We also ordered 2 regular coffees that weren't delivered at the same time or with cream. I only tasted the New Day Galette. I enjoyed it but felt like it lacked sauce for the breading. We also had scrambled eggs rather than fried. My husband loved his chicken. My boys also enjoyed their meals & licked their plates clean. The service was just not good. We were missing a set of silverware & cream which I had to go to the bar to get myself. Our waiter never checked on us.
Chill laid back atmosphere. Food came out fast which was great but with that being said everything was cold. The chicken on the waffles where dried out, had good flavor though. All the staff where very nice and attentive. Local brewery beers on tap. read more

Amazing gem! It is a store, bar, and restaurant all rolled up in one. Also some of the nicest staff work here~ George was our waiter and resident expert. He and his son both work here. The atmosphere is a bit retro with amazing food combinations and drinks. Highly recommend stopping in for an drink and staying for the brunch! I used to love MKT Bar, but the quality of food at this place has gone down a lot. My boyfriend and I stopped in for dinner last night and we were quite disappointed. The chicken sandwich looked good, but wasn't very tasty as it was over cooked and dry. read more
My boyfriend and I went for lunch here yesterday. Parking was very confusing. When we arrived, there was no host to greet us, so we got lost in the grocery store next door. Once we got seated (we were the only people in the restaurant), They were also fixing some machine which was very loud. We ordered the hummus which was really good (not enough pita chips, but they brought more). I ordered the chicken salad and my boyfriend got the friend chicken sandwich. Both meals were a solid 2/5. Very very dry chicken. The food was expensive compared to the quality of the food. We will not be back. read more

First time I ordered curbside from Phoenicia MKT menu. I ordered the Roasted Half Chicken with olive-lemon sauce served with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. At $16 there was little garlic taste to the potatoes but most importantly the chicken was RAW. I was hoping I was mistaken but the more I cut the more blood came out. Didn't even cut into the second larger piece. Ended up having a sandwich for lunch, instead of a meal I was looking forward to. I was nearby and read good reviews but if you have another option take it. Or maybe just have a sandwich. read more

Amazing!!!!! This restaurant is part of the Phoenician Specialty Food Market. First, let me tell you the market is incredible!! We discovered this market after going to an Astros game and the people in front of us were eating a shawarma and it looked incredible! We asked them where they bought it and they told us Phoenician! We went there after the game and the rest is history.... Now, let's talk about the MktBar!! We went for the weekend brunch and will be a regular after eating the most delicious food! As you can see from the pictures, the food looks amazing and tastes the same like an orchestra in your mouth! For an "appetizer ", we ordered the sweet potato shoestring fries. It was served with a homemade ketchup and aioli! Magnificent!!! We each had a different entree. Cod and fries, chicken and waffles and black pepper waffle. First, the cod was coated lightly in a tender, golden crust with perfectly made fries. A small cup of homemade slaw for tasting was included. It was not to creamy and had the right balance of mayo and vinegar. The chicken and waffles were a perfect combination! The chicken was not dry! It was cooked to perfection and was juicy and tender! Now, the waffle was a "melt in your mouth" experience!! It was sooo tasty! One of the best waffles I have ever had! The surprise entree was the black pepper waffle! It was a waffle with a hefty portion of braised lamb shank! The BEST lamb shank I have ever had! The spices and seasoning were perfect! This will definitely be a staple for our brunch. And to top It all off, for a Sunday treat, we were entertained by the best music! The place is so welcoming and warming and you would not believe it was part of a specialty food store. After our wonderful meal, great music and great company, we went into the food store and picked up our food for the week. When we arrived me and my cousin weren't even acknowledged nor greeted so that's strike one. Strike 2, I had the ceviche and it had octopus in it, that was interesting. The ceviche was decent , however we ordered the pizza and it tasted like nothing I've had before. I thought pizza was fool proof but somehow it was a big miss. I wouldn't recommend that to anyone. Overall it wasn't anything amazing and your probably better off getting a chain restaurant or something you normally get somewhere else. The ambiance was chill but nothing extraordinary. read more

5 stars!!!! The atmosphere was perfect for our steak night dinner. $17 steak night included chefs special of steak cooked how you want it, half a baked potato topped with cheese, a house side salad, and a few onion rings. This can not be beat. I like my steak medium to medium rare and this was perfectly delivered to our table. Everyone is so nice and friendly. Our waitress was awesome. She did not bother us too much while we enjoyed our meal, but she was super attentive! Fast service too! After dinner we walked next door to the grocery store (it's connected by a hallway!) for some dessert. read more

Cute little spot I saw here on Yelp that was one of the few places opened. Came a quarter til 11am and we were the only ones here. The server was behind the bar and the only person working. The seating is open to wherever we liked and chose a booth. The menu was contactless via QR code and it was also limited. I chose the egg scramble with kielbasa and an iced white mocha. The coffee was AMAZING! Sweet and tasted like liquid gold! I wanted to buy another to take back to the hotel. The breakfast wasn't too bad, either! It came with eggs, green onion, kielbasa, home fries, and a cheese sauce.For what it was, it was a good deal! read more

This place is really nice, the ambiance is really enjoyable. The play good music, and some days even have live music. The place is super spacious so it's good for small and large parties (10+). They have booth, low and high chairs seating. The have really good appetizers and pizza I would recommend the cheese board, ceviche, and the queso. For drinks they have tons of draught beer, and cocktails.... My fav is the mango frozen cocktail. Stuart was our waiter, he was amazing he even remembered us from the day before. Happy hour is Monday, Tuesday and Friday 4-6pm. read more
Came here for Sunday lunch. It was a jazz day with a nice live band. The place was 90% filled. We were told to seat ourselves. The wait was quite long (at least 20 mins) after we ordered from the menu which looked like a brunch menu. Food was 3.5 stars. Ordered fried chicken and waffle. Fried chicken was white meat with lille batter but well seasoned. Waffles are good but syrup was a bit spicy - coworker tasted it and thought it had black pepper in it. This restaurant/bar was hidden in the back of the MKT and a place we needed to eat before a concert, but not before we walked through the store first thinking it was a store, salad/soup bar, dinners to heat and go, etc. I ordered a Shawarma while hubs looked around. He found the MKT and called to tell me he was in the back and they had a menu. Too late, ordered my Shawarma, but after I paid at the store the MKT allowed me to dine with my husband. I perused the menu which caters to the younger, more health conscience crowd, so that was not something we would need to revisit. read more

This restaurant is attached to Phoenicia, which is awesome. This was my first visit and surprisingly, the Austin burger was surprisingly impressive. We were hesitant to order it since I didn't see many pictures of it but it did not disappoint. The meat was cooked in a perfect medium heat, coming out extremely juicy and tasty. The addition of the Gouda cheese in the burger made me slobber a little; I'll definitely be back for that. On the other hand, the Curry Pot Pie was pretty disappointing. I'm a big curry fan and I understand it was a mild version but it seemed to be under seasoned. However, the crust was delicious. It was made thin, allowing you to truly taste the flavor of their homemade crust without overwhelming you, and served literally fresh off the oven so be careful and let it cool off. I'm excited to see that they have a week's worth of schedule for their customers, I cannot wait to come back one Thursday to try their Steak Night! read more
After a stroll at Discovery Green, we decided to come here for a bite. It's connected to the fab Phoenicia Market. I was looking around for a host or hostess but a server just told us to sit anywhere available. Once seated, it took close to 20 minutes for someone to come and take our orders. We shared the Za'atar shoestring fries and the veggie pizza. The fries were disappointing because it didn't reflect the description on the menu. Personally, I feel like it could use more flavor and crispiness. As for the pizza, it was hearty and didn't disappoint. I like the casual vibe at this place. There was a live DJ spinning some Blues/Motown tunes. He seemed very passionate about the music he's playing. Will I come back to this place? Of course! Visiting Houston for the first time, we sought places popular with the locals. After reading the accolades about MKT Bar, located inside Phoenicia Foods, we were curious to experience it for ourselves. On this Sunday evening, oddly enough, the funky space was packed with millennials enjoying live music (good but wayyy too loud). The host was considerate to seat our family as far as possible from the crowded bar area. Though not strangers to Mediterranean food, we found MKT's menu somewhat quirky. Our server delighted in explaining the mystery items. The chow was hit-and-miss. We liked the inventive beverages and the MKT salad, thought the za'atar-dusted shoestring fries were okay, and found the roasted half chicken tasty but overcooked. As for the MKT fish & chips, the "seasoned and lightly fried Atlantic cod" was enveloped in a thick, doughy batter which I ended up pulling off. I assumed the chickpea fries would taste like falafel. Nope, they were bland. Only the accompanying ramekin of garlic aioli rescued this entree. We enjoyed a shared dessert, warm apple baklava with a scoop of snickerdoodle gelato, more than anything else. read more

It's got a great vibe! Super clean and nice however our server, maybe was having a bad day, & was not the nicest. We just popped in for a few drinks so we weren't demanding but she seemed annoyed every time we placed an order. Something to note is that their bar does not have liquor. Everything is beer & wine based including the cocktails. I'd give it a shot again because all the food looked awesome at other tables but overall a "meh" experience. read more

We came here for the Yelp burger binge event. This was my first experience at MKT Bar and I can truly say it was a good experience. Upon arrival it was a little different walking in from the actual market. I didn't know how the seating was. It's kinda communal or whatever you call it l. The Burger- Austin Street Burger Fresh ground chuck with Gouda cheese, tomato, lettuce, homemade pickled pepper relish and ranch dressing on an egg bun. It was pretty good, the meat was juicy and cooked prefect. I didn't really like the sliced mini pickles that came on it. Other than that no complaints! It's possible that I might come back and try more than just a Burger. I mean Ricco our server was a cool dude and was very professional. Even on of the managers Lester came out and talked with us about the store side. He was very helpful and even talked with us about another place to try out called the Red lion. read more

A couple of the kids from my dance team and I ate here before a performance at discovery green, and we were all extremely happy we chose this place:) When we walked inside, we were a little unsure if we could eat there since it was a bar and some of us were under 18, but the staff was really nice and informed us we could and told us to sit wherever we liked. I ordered the grilled branzino, which was absolutely amazing. The red quinoa was really tasty, and the fish was perfectly grilled and seasoned. My friends had the 7 cheese Mac & cheese and roasted half chicken, both of which I tried, which were also amazing. The 7 cheese Mac and cheese parallels to Jus' Mac's Mac & cheese, and the roasted half chicken was a huge portion for a great price, and was perfectly done, and not undercooked or overly chewy. The zatar fries were a hit with everyone at the table, and I even went and bough zatar seasoning at HEB later in the week to make my own! I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a highly tasty, filling meal close to Discovery Green. read more
