We were looking for an affordable venue somewhere central in Houston for our wedding, and we ran across the Heights Fire Station. It's a beautiful historic building located in the Heights, and it's a quirky space, with the old truck bays downstairs and a more conventional event space upstairs. The Good: Lovely historic building. Decent parking. Central location. The Bad: Difficult Management. Management is available only on Saturdays from 9-10am. No other times - if you need to measure, plan, or tour the venue, that's when you've got to be there. No rehearsal times are possible, unless you rent the venue again. Management seemed put off after our second visit - we wouldn't have had to come back if their hours were not so brief! Questionable Business Practices. We meticulously cleaned the venue after our event, yet $60 was withheld from our deposit, without explanation. After calling them, the excuse we were given was that there was "water on the floor, probably from someone dragging a garbage can." That costs $60 to fix? All in all, it's a pretty place and inexpensive, but the fact that the lady running the operation is so difficult to work with makes it impossible to recommend the venue. read more

My wife and I had our wedding here July 15th 2013, and had a fantastic experience. The woman who runs everything (Laurel I believe is her name) was always super prompt to respond to our email questions and was very polite throughout the process (which is saying a lot, since I'm a big question asker!). This hall is kind of bare bones, so it can be whatever you want it to be (also, can be as bad an experience as you make it). If you plan well and are on top of your game, you will be able to create a magical atmosphere for guests to have a raging time. We had about 115 total guests, and that seemed to be a perfect number. We've heard of up to 150 people being packed in there, but if you're really planning on lots of people dancing, I would try to limit your max to 125 guests. There are freezers/fridges downstairs that you're welcome to use, which was HUGE for us. On that note, they allow you to bring your own vendors for everything (your own food/booze/etc) which allows you to chop your price tag for the wedding down by a big margin. The morning of, we packed our beer/soda in the fridge, packed our ice in the freezer, and come evening time had our bartending staff haul them up. Yes, the hall is a stickler on the rules, but that just makes you can't be a total flake (or at least be willing to lose a bit in the deposit if you are). This place as a venue was terrific, however, the woman that ran it was RUDE. She was rude the entire time I dealt with her, and on the day of my wedding I was late (it started raining and the traffic got bad-her daughter in law had passed away and I understood she was in a hurry, but I was not intentionally late). She reprimanded me on being late, which is fine. I apologized to her and her response was, "Well, it's not like my daughter in law PLANNED on dying this week" or something like that. Just extremely rude. I couldn't help that I was late, I'm normally early for everything but this woman was just nasty to me. I'm sorry for her loss, but please don't take it out on me. Not to mention, we only got HALF of our deposit back, and she made some ridiculous claims (example, that we took one of her trash cans! How could we haul some huge trash can, and why would want to???? or that we moved chairs from downstairs to upstairs. Why would be do that? We had our wedding reception here in July and we had absolutely no problems. The rate is really great for what you get. The upstairs is a large beautiful room with nice wood floors and a good history to go along with it! Yes, the woman you work with isn't the most outwardly friendly person around but she did a great job with us. She was always prompt to return emails and calls. Yes, you can only go visit on Saturdays at 8 or 9am but that's because there is usually an event that day and you can't visit during an event obviously. To be clear, they will call/email on weekdays during regular business hours. We hired the cleaning crew they recommend and we got our entire deposit back! We didn't want to make our family/friends do any cleaning so we paid a couple hundred bucks to have them professionally do it. I will agree with previous reviews that say the fire station has strict rules but that it is a fantastic space, especially for the price. The price is truly unbeatable. If you show up on time to your appointments, don't let the caterer use the elevator, don't attach anything to the walls, and you pay for their cleaning service, you will have no problems. I received my entire deposit back within a week. They call you to remind you to make payments and are actually very flexible if you let them know what you need. I emailed Lauriel on weekdays and she responded promptly--sometimes I even called her on her cell phone. The venue is not ideal if you have guests with disabilities and you are having the event upstairs. They have an elevator, but it has plastic walls and honestly seems a little embarrassing to use. It's sort of a scene when you have to use it. It costs an extra deposit, but you get it all back if you don't break it. If you have a a large number of people with disabilities or limited mobility coming to your event, you'll probably want to celebrate downstairs. The upstairs is the most beautiful part, though. They have significantly improved the downstairs, and it's now quite attractive. It looked totally different on the day of my wedding than it did when I first toured the building. This gives you a lot more options. Overall, the fires station is gorgeous and has tons of character. If you are going for a vintage look, it's perfect. Follow the rules, ask lots of clarifying questions, and you'll be fine. And again, the price is truly unbeatable. read more

This is a terrible place to trust for your wedding day or any other important life events. Biggest problem: the management is horrifying. Why did my friend bother paying for this space for her wedding if the management not only wouldn't take care of known problems with the space (no AC or electricity!), but also wouldn't respond to the groom himself, who spent his wedding day dealing with electricians and repairmen? Lauriel the manager wouldn't return a single phone call, and never showed up to do her job of coordinating the event. If this is your job it shouldn't be just another customer you're blowing off - this was a man on his wedding day trying to make sure that his Houston in July wedding reception was air conditioned and actually useable. Other problems: the current state of construction leaves the building an absolute wreck. The actual rented space is beautiful, but the first floor is a mess, and when we were there the power was out so there was no fridge or freezer for the food to stay in, and the band couldn't plug in their equipment. Even more problems: this facility offers absolutely no services. The wedding party did all of the setup and tear down, including cleaning, even though we were treated so horribly throughout the weekend. The only silver lining: the space is pretty and is the perfect size for 75-100 people. Just make sure you're up for massive stress and anxiety on your special occasion before you look into this place. You should really considering hiring a staff to do what the fire stations staff doesn't do. Also plan for serious problems with no solutions or even acknowledgment from the people you're paying. read more

This is a charming venue, a really nice space for a function! Several years ago, I played a cocktail hour for a wedding reception. (the couple used a DJ for dancing) I subtracted 1 star for the load-in, a long staircase to the 2nd floor. And took off another star for the load-out, LOL. read more

A great location for an event venue with historical context. They even have a jail cell downstairs that they use as a storage closet now. Since this place used to be a fire station, jail and court built into place, you could only imagine what kind of energy was in this place. Overall, it felt good and is located in the revitalized Heights neighborhood with cute homes and cool shops. I had a great experience. This place is a no frills venue with plenty of mobility for the event you are throwing. I came here for a wedding and it was a good time! read more

As with previous comments, the venue is very cool and the lady who runs it is somewhat rude. We had a very casual reception after a destination wedding and everyone loved the feel of the venue. The negatives: - We had food trucks parked outside and the fire doors along the front of the building don't open. I guess it was our mistake for not asking but one would assume that opening the front doors would have been an option. - Don't plan on getting your $500 cleaning deposit back. We had a professional cleaning crew clean after our event and they still took half of our $500 deposit for cleaning bathrooms, floors and the kitchen--which we didn't use since we had food trucks!?! Their "recommended" cleaners charge $475 which still means you don't get back your deposit because you basically turn around and give it to their cleaning crew. I think it's a racket but I would have been less upset if I had known ahead of time that I wasn't going to get back my deposit. read more

I loved this venue! Its SMACK in the middle of the heights, most of my in-town guests ubered and loved the location. Its a beautiful building inside and out so not too much decoration is needed in my opinion. We also took some of our engagement pictures outside of it since its such a neat building. It was affordable compared to others and you could do all the food/alcohol and deco however you wanted. I am in the food business so we brought in all of our preferred caterers, flowers, cake people, DJ we wanted etc. If you want a venue who will list it all out for you and limit your vendors, this place may not work for you but be prepared to pay way expensive somewhere else and not have many choices. The venue turned out beautiful and I loved how I could do my ceremony down stairs then reception upstairs. You get 2 visits beforehand to work on your layout and also have the venue from 9am-2am. Lauriel was quick to answer emails or calls anytime I needed a quick answer. Follow all rules on the agreement and you will get your deposit back. Easy as that. read more

My daughter and her husband were married and had the reception at the venue June 9, and it couldn't have been better. The woman who ran the place was professional, courteous, helpful and responsive. We chose the venue because it was a lovely and charming place, providing a great atmosphere at a great price and for a decent period of time to party. Another factor in our selection was we wanted to choose the food -- a shout out for Fadi's -- the food was amazing, and everyone loved it. The size of the venue was perfect for our group of about 120. Held the ceremony downstairs, complete with bagpiper and reception upstairs. I was pleasantly suprised the place stayed cool all night and seemed to contain the noise of our 8-piece band quite well. Another plus, we didn't have to vacate the place until 2 a.m. We also hired the recommended cleaning crew and received full deposit back -- definitely worth it. Everything turned out perfectly. I was so nervous about this venue because of the mixed reviews on many sites. After its all said and done, everything was perfect. Everything was handled professionally. I had no problem with any of the ladies that worked there. They told me upfront regarding expectations. We got a check list and I hired someone to clean up after. Within 3 weeks we'd received our full deposit back. I'm sure a lot of that had to to with my fabulous day of coordinator who stayed after and made sure everything was ship shape! My friend got married here yesterday, and our interaction with this place was a disaster. They told my friend that the construction they were doing on the first floor would be done before the wedding. It was not. And because of the construction, they had electrical issues, so when we went the morning of the wedding to setup, there was NO ELECTRICITY, and NO AIR CONDITIONING. In Houston. In July. Seriously. Then the nice electricians who finally came were struggling to get enough generator power to run the AC. They told us that the woman who manages the venue knew about the electricity issue two days earlier, but the other electricians she tried to hire did not come to fix it. The worst thing about all of this, was that Lauriel (the manager) never answered anyone's phone calls (including the groom's) and never returned our calls. She was no where to be found. There was no offer to get fans, so the bridesmaids had to run to Lowe's and spend tons of money on fans in case we needed them. The groom was so stressed out, and we were doing our best to keep the bride out of the loop. Everything worked out, as it usually does, but all of their plans had to change for the day. They couldn't take picture beforehand, because the venue was such a mess. The space is beautiful and it all worked out once those sweet electricians were finally able to fix the problem. But if you are set on using this venue, please be prepared for a difficult time and unresponsive management. read more
