Great food and great service! Had lunch with a friend one week day, and it was great! I'm not vegetarian or vegan, but my friend is vegan. The food was delicious! I had the French on focaccia bread-so much flavor, I didn't miss the meat! I had the corn soup-yum! You can expect to pay around $12-$18 for most entrees, but most come with your choice of soup or salad. The chef was experimenting with a banana cookie, and OMG! The atmosphere here is open, modern and comfortable. They had nice, seasonal decorations throughout the dining room and in the tables. So cute! Now to the real reason I stopped in...the food! They have so many vegan options and it was nice to be able to have breakfast. They had a couple specials and I chose the Pumpkin Pie French Toast. It wasn't too sweet, it was just right. I love MJs employees. They seem so happy to be there and to have you as well. They have helped with recommendations during visits, moving tables when I camped out and realized I now needed to plug my laptop in, and multiple other requests. I've never had a bad drink or sweet from there. I have had a miss on the entree side. One of the "peanut" salads caused me to say "I could do better". Which, anyone who has had my cooking knows, is not true but gives you a glimpse into how much I didn't like it. What a great, fresh representation of vegan food! I always really enjoy my lunches at MJ's and it's become a go to when I'm meeting friends and want to sit and chat a while. Been working with a mostly plant-based diet in recent months and having this gem right around the corner has been huge! I'm here at least twice a week for lunch. However, I was super hungry, trying to find places open on a random Monday afternoon, and this place looked as good as any to stop in to try. There wasn't diet coke, because of course there wasn't, but they did have a nice margarita to keep my thirst quenched. I ordered the French sandwich, as I have rarely been led astray by goat cheese, pepper jelly, and apples. It was a solid and filling meal, and I enjoyed the staff there. I ordered the buffalo cauliflower wrap with mushroom soup and vegan quesadilla. Unfortunately, they were all out of vegan desserts that day by the time I called. I called about 1200 noon. The buffalo cauliflower wrap was awesome! I could eat that daily. The mushroom soup was good, had a little spicy kick to it. The vegan quesadilla was okay but not memorable. If I could put zero stars I would... All the food was extremely bland. I had a peanut cabbage salad sitting in. Served with mushy cucumbers and no where near enough sauce! The sandwiches were small and NASTY I can't stress this enough. The menu is pretty misleading. As it seems fresh. It is NOT. I am still wondering whether this was a hate crime against vegans. Each meal is made to order, so be patient. It's worth it! First tip- the baked goods are gluten free (and vegan), but be sure to ask. Second tip- they have gluten free bread to turn wraps into sandwiches. After that, decide what you want and be ready to be satiated! The salad (daily) is definitely filling and quite fresh- can add avocado for extra if so desired. Have in mind just one sandwich or wrap though, because again very filling! I like jackfruit and their jackfruit sandwich is definitely delicious and filling. The BLT is also delicious with all the coconut bacon! I like how the food is not too salty! The cupcakes are moist and satisfying. The cookies are hit or miss in my opinion- go for chocolate chip. Peanut butter is soft but falls apart. The snickerdoodle was dry and not good. Their menu seemed appealing enough, however, when I ordered a black bean torta, I ended up with a pretty ordinary pita (but if you call it a "torta" it sounds fancy) with black bean hummus and some decent vegetables. It took way too long to make and came out cold and accompanied by a pretty unimpressive salad, and all for the low low price of...$14? Sans tip? Don't get be wrong, I'll spend some money on food, but even at hip food hall places in bigger cities and nicer locations than this, I get more for my money, and I've been to a few of these food hall places. And frankly, even in BR I've had plenty of better meals. The upside here is obvious: you can come here as a vegetarian or even a vegan and have some nice options in a vegetarian-unfriendly Southern town. But even with that market cornered, I was a long way from being impressed with this place. I wish I could give MJ's six stars!!! I just visited their new location for the first time, it's just down the street from their previous location in White Star Market. They're in the old Tiger Deauxnuts building. They have done up the space so nicely!! It's beautiful and airy with lots of plants scattered throughout. And their bathrooms are just gorgeous with fresh hip wallpaper (two gender neutral bathrooms available). Now the food... I'm so so happy that they brought the French sandwich back!!! It's an Apple, goat cheese, greens, and pepper jelly sandwich on ciabatta bread. Honestly it might be my favorite sandwich on this earth. The French also comes with a side soup, so I got the soup of the day, which was Roasted Corn & Garlic soup... which might be my favorite soup on this earth!!! And it was only $10.95 for the sandwich and soup. The other people I was with got the salad of the week and said it was amazing as well. All in all, MJ's food is to die for. I really like MJ's vegan/vegetarian/GF friendly menu. I'm a pescatarian and my sister is a Celiac (must be gluten free) vegetarian, and we always have lots of options to choose from here!
