Love me some sandwiches and was told by a friend that Mulberry Market had the best Italian he's had outside of NYC. Needless to say, but I was super excited to try this place out. As soon as I walked in, the place was kind of a wreck. Not like they were stocking or making repairs, Just sort of in a general state of disarray. Empty boxes stacked up, shelves empty, signage all wonky... and there was this weird smell. Not rot, or garbage but some sort of chemical or cleaner maybe? But not in a good disinfectant or bleach kind of way. Whatever it was, it was strong and not pleasant. Otherwise, it was clean so far as there not being any trash or visible nastiness. It just wasn't someplace I'd want to hang out and eat. It was so off-putting that I declined to purchase a slice of the chocolate cake (and man, do I love chocolate cake). I just had the thought that whatever that smell was, the cake would have absorbed it and was going to taste like it (little did I know how accurate that was going to be). Service-wise, the guys working the counter were super quick and pleasant, so absolutely no complaints there. Granted, I was the only one in there, but they were polite and quick to put my order together. As far as the food is concerned, I've only got two positive things to say. First off, it was a well-built sandwich (a highly underrated component of a delicious sandwich and another nod towards the service). Second, they stacked it with cold cuts and cheese. Which was comforting given that the sandwich cost $20. Oh, and they did slice the sandwich in half after it was wrapped, which is definitely a pro move. Unfortunately, the meat and cheese used had an odd mushy texture and were all fairly absent of flavor. Any flavor that could have been there was overpowered by the arugula. (Not a fan, but that's on me, not them. Just wish I'd have known so I could have asked them to leave it off) Also, the bread had that weird, not-good smell from the shop clinging to it and not just faintly. Overall the sandwich just had an off-putting texture and combined with the taste of arugula and the weird smell. It was so bad that I did not finish the sandwich, and for me something's got to be really bad for me not to finish it. Basically, the sandwich tasted like arugula and whatever that weird smell was. Huge disappointment. Since moving to Baton Rouge I've had to learn to temper my expectations, but even with that adjustment in mind the Mulberry Market was no bueno. I usually try and give new places at least a second go, but between the cost, the weird smell, and the overall disappointment, I don't think I'll be going back. Nice little cafe with walk-up counter service, but the menu posted behind the counter is not helpful. When I asked what the "Smokie Hoagie" was, the lady at the counter didn't know. But after looking around for a moment, she found a more descriptive menu. I suppose if you're a regular, that's not an issue. For a first timer, it's weird. I came here with high hopes for an Italian hoagie ("The Italian"). A good Italian hoagie is hard to find in the heart of po-boy country. The meat and cheese on this version is good, but the sandwich is kind of small and a bit dry. The menu says it includes roasted red peppers, but that was missing from my sandwich. It does appear they have a nice variety of bagels. Overall not bad, but I'm still in search of a good Italian hoagie. read more

Mulberry market has good sandwiches and can be a good study spot. The inside is kept cool/ cold, which is nice for Louisiana. The spicy vodka sandwich is very, very good, and it is a very large sandwich. You could split one and both people will walk away happy. Service here is fantastic- refills as soon as you ask and a kind staff, even when there's a rush. I will say there is a little bit of a wait, BUT good food should take time, and that is the case here. PS- the Lebanese Tea is fantastic! read more

I'm not sure if they overlooked my order in the lineup or something but I had to go back up to the counter to ask about it. We walked into this place and immediately noticed that almost every table had no food on it despite it being fairly busy. That was our first red flag - we knew the service was going to be slow. Unfortunately, it was even worse than we expected. We waited forever for our sandwich to come out. When it finally arrived, it was a total letdown - bland, unimpressive, and not worth the long wait. The sides were equally disappointing with very limited and unappealing options. The menu itself is pretty weak. From what we could tell, there's really only one standout item, and it's a special. I had the Tunacado and it lived up to the hype. Perfect combo with this warmer weather. I also tried the Spicy Tunacado and it had just the right amount of kick. If you like a little heat, this one's for you. And then... the Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake. Y'all. The server said they were all good that good so I can't wait to try more. I've been wanting to try Mulberry Market out, so I made sure to be around here for lunchtime. This is a great little spot, specializing in bagels and sandwiches. They also have little groceries items and lots of different wine bottles you can grab. You can drink them in store now, too. Staff was friendly and everything moved pretty quickly. I ordered their special, the chicken salad croissant. You can grab a drink and chips. It was about $17 for my lunch, a little high for what it was, but I was expecting that. The chicken salad was lacking in any special flavor, so that was disappointing. I'll have to try one of their other items when I go back. After hearing nothing but good things about this deli and market, I had to go and try it and all I can say is what took me so long? The ingredients are top quality and the bread is from a local bakery called St. Bruno Bread Co. Full of flavor and beautifully constructed, these sandwiches are the best in Baton Rouge. The cookies are fresh and delicious. I had a blueberry lemonade to drink and it was tasty. The server was friendly and knows about customer service. Love the interior and the location. Adorable market located in Willow Grove off Perkins in South Baton Rouge, not far from the Mall and Perkins Rowe. A friend posted about the sandwiches, so I made a mental note to stop by when I was in the area. I was tempted by the sign for "The Italian", but instead I went with a tuna sandwich aka "Tunacado" as it was loaded with fresh avocado. I was not disappointed, especially with that crunch ciabatta bread. The two workers at the counter were helpful from the moment I walked in. Good flow of customers coming in, but when I had questions, they were right there to answer. They recommended sandwiches as I had asked, and truly I don't think I would have regretted ordering anything off the menu here. Mulberry Market is definitely more than sandwiches though. To me, they had all the liquor one could need plus a couple bins of charcuterie type meats and cheeses that were tempting. I also noticed toilet paper, which clued me in that it's indeed a convenience store for the people that can walk from their Willow Grove residence (without driving to cross the busy Perkins Road). Pretty smart on their end I'd imagine and helpful to avoid Baton Rouge traffic. So many more items for sale, such as freshly made bagels and breads, a City Gelato bin (yay for supporting more local businesses), cake slices, etc. So long story short, go support local and buy yourself something yummy at Mulberry Market! read more

Waited on our food for 45 minutes. Noticed people that ordered behind us were getting their food. Asked what the status of our order was only to find out they lost our ticket. We didn't have time to keep waiting for them to remake it so had to leave. We wasted $40 on two sandwiches and had to run through a drive through somewhere else to get food. I literally never do food reviews! They need to figure out a better system! It should never take a sandwich shop/lunch spot over 45 min to make two sandwiches! They allow too many to go orders with DoorDash, GrubHub, and different food delivery services at one time, causing chaos. Along with people like me went in to order.
